About this dome:
This one has been a long time coming!
I'm very happy with this design and it checks off a lot of boxes!
-400 sq of gorgeous space with no floor space wasted, period.
-Amazing geometry that feels so organic and modern simultaneously
-Small panel sizes to utilize 4x8 sheet material super efficiently
-Ridiculously inexpensive cost to usable space ratio
-So much potential for customization
Thanks for following along with this build! Let me know if you have any questions in the comment section. We've got a lot more wild and unique projects coming up, so stay tuned for more epic builds and plans to follow along with!
Actually some of the best filmography of any video I’ve ever seen on UA-cam! Love the different angles, the lens that allowed such full view perspectives
Thank you!
This is great, I love how the camera distortion creates a kaleidoscope out of the geometry.
Seriously! Geodesic domes + 360 camera = 🤯
@@trilliumdomes You have done a great job here. Thanks for taking the time to show the assembly details such as altering the base location while fitting the components. Very interesting and informative.👌
@@markwhitehead7096 I'm glad you think so! I appreciate that :)
Me too! That’s what I was just thinking!
Dreamlike, Awesome work
Thank you!
Very nice video. I like the calmness of your voice. And looking forward to building a small one for my daughter to sit in the woods and read books and watch nature around her.
I absolutely love to hear that! That sounds so lovely and special.
Wow. Such a beautiful build. That client must have been thrilled.
I'd love to see an update if you ever got a chance to visit this dome again, see what worked and see it filled with plants etc.
Nice job
Amazing 😊❤
Love your dome. I have built a lot of domes with steel tubing and emt but always wanted to out of wood. Thank you for selling your plans.
The path of building its dome is very useful. How you makes the dome in smalls section and after go to the place and finish, exelent.
Amazing results
Fantastic opportunity for individual uses and potential for these amazing looking buildings. Congratulations to you and your team 👍👍👍🏴
Love it!!!
Love this, both the dome and the video!
Thank you 😌
Stunning Finish
The work of a Modest Genius 🙏
Very nice dome. May just make one using your plans but if I do I will opt for a arched Hobbit type door for aesthetics.
Awesome!
Man, this is really cool. I love your no-hubs approach. I hope we can see how it scales up for a residential application someday.
Yeah I'm wondering how shallow you can make the dome and then it could blend in a little more and not have such a huge void space at the top.
Could also be interesting to make a two story dome system: a second smaller some inset on top of the first dome.
Excellent design and work , behind every great man is greater woman , the best regards 4 both of You , pozďrawiam Zbigniew Canada
Congratulations on a great project, pretty cool how two people put it up
Thanks Dave!
Yooo Sir!
I dont think i can look at a conventional greenhouse the same anymore! WOOOW! just WOOOW!
Love Your Greenhouses!! 😲🤗😲
PS:
I truly think its amazing to watch couples work together as eachother's partner-n-crime!!
There is a value in that which can not be measured!!!
Seeing what you guys build makes me want to sell one of my kidneys on the black market! 😂😂😂
10 Thumbs Up From Iowa !!
Thanks much friend!
Hey , I am marc
I love your work , I was looking all over, so I built my own with out of having to buy a very expensive kit .
So in the ottawa , canada area . How warm does it get in the winter ?
How feasible is it to just dig a hole and have a sunkin pool instead of above ground for an aquaponic/heat system
🎉
When ya coming back to Fairbanks? Bought some land last spring and likely needing a dome
ASAP!!! I have ideas !
Beautiful work!
Beautiful Dome! Do you have any tips for domes at northern lats? Specifically snow load, sealing between panels, non-glazed panels on north side, chimneys for wood burners...
It's all doable. Snow loads are fantastic with these. You could use triple or quadruple wall polycarbonate but not necessary. Happy to give you more specific details but hopefully I can get up and build one for someone in Fairbanks, AK or something.
Awesome job brother ! And wow where do you find such an amazing helper 🤩
Lol thanks for sharing !!
You have the best DIY dome design I've seen. Your photography is also a real plus. I look forward to working with you in the future.
I appreciate you saying so, William! Cheers
Damm this Is extremely useful
Love geo domes. You have done a great job. Do you seal the cut ends of the polly carbonate or ever get any issues with algae
The ends do end up sealed! I have had some up for years with no algae issues but it may depend on your climate.
@@trilliumdomes thanks for your response. Do you just use a silicone or tape or something else
@@matthewsmade no prob!
Between frames: 100% silicone or something like Prosoco R guard.
Between polycarbonate panels: 100% silicone
Uv flashing tape over polycarbonate seems. Pro tape 160 or siga wigluv or equivalent
Awsome build , thanks for sharing .
Wonderful
Every part of this video is dope guys. Love yalls content and can’t wait to buy a plan from yall 🖤🍻
Thanks mate!
Its amazing man! :)
Awesomeness 🤩thank you for sharing, beautiful and practical design 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
good place to get the extra hardware might be nice
wax piston vents
earth anchors
fisheye lenz are awesome right up to the point they are not
I've got some green lumber I can use, will green lumber do for this or will it warp too much?
hey man, what are the temperature differences on a sunny or cloudy day?
compliments - very nice - i would love to make a geenhouse dome thatis 2 to 3 meaters buried in te earth for insulation - again nice
That would be awesome!
What kinda screws are you using that ypu dont have to predrill?
I'm curious why you didn't remove the plastic covering from the top panels before install? I imagine it's a pain in the ass to reach those panels after it's built.
We went up there anyway to seal the dome so it’s worth the protection it offers during assembly. But yeah you can take them off right before you put it up.
@@trilliumdomes oh ok.. I didn't realize there was another step to seal the outside
@@jrtshirtsdotcom it’s optional. There’s a series of steps you can take depending on how redundant you want to be!
Do you have plans for a tunnel dome? I need to cover a travel trailer to winterize it and keep snow load off the roof.
Closest thing we have right now is our horizon dome plans. I have something int he works for a better geodesic tunnel design than the standard one though.
I would like to get information on commissioning you for a Florida Dome/Zome build. I’m still searching properties but want to understand costs and timing. I love your wood working.
Muito bem feito, ficou ótimo 👍 obrigada ❣ é tão bom que eu teria colocado uma base a prova de umidade.
Hey man what would you charge for a 100' dome just like this one
Thanks for details and we adapt design you have on site for aluminum channels rather wood ?
You can certainly do that if you’d like!
hi there, i was wondering if you could give me a link to this earth anchor you are using in this video ? it might solve my door problem. Thanks a lot !!
I don't know if I wasn't paying attention or what. How were you I attaching the poly Carbide to the wooden dome frames.
I have it shown in my ultimate dome builders guide video. It's just double sided glazing tape
How do you prevent the roof/wall from leaking when it rains?
Great video and build Johnny! Do you have any photos or videos of domes that you have built 5-6 years ago? How this material is holding with aging.
I do! I’ll have to find some. The materials hold up remarkably well! Especially the dome frame and twin wall polycarbonate! Lasts for a long freaking time!
How much did it cost your customer?
Awesome
?are their workshops?
Amazing work, all of your domes and zomes. I would kill to know more about water proofing. I need to build something I know won't leak, but keeps this amazing natural light. Keep doing what your doing brother.
Depends on the materials you're using. Basically, think like a rain drop. If you use polycarbonate, just use double sided glazing tape and trim the poly 1/8" inboard of the frames. When they go together, fill that 1/4" space with a high quality sealant like sikaflex. Also put clear silicone between the frames as you assemble. You can also use UV stable flashing tape as an extra layer of protection. I choose siga wigluv black. Just make sure whatever it is is high quality.
@@trilliumdomes right on i fallow you. Here we need to use what is available and make it work. It's part of the fun of being out here, ha. Saludos from the end of the earth!
How does a person order these blueprints or is there a set of plans to purchase? Thank you for any help. Would love a set of paper prints with specific length and angles needed.
Hey Robert you can find the plans here, let me know if you have any questions
trilliumdomes.com/shop/
Beautiful! Curious why doors open in versus out? Not sure if that’s normal in just thinking I’d want open out to maximize internal usage
Great question! It could definitely go either way but I wanted to be able to open the door while being sheltered under the doorway as well as be able to build shelves / keep things permanently in that space if the client chose. But yep you could definitely have it go the other way as well!
How is it anchored to the ground , what keeps it from blowing away in a strong wind.
You can do allot of things. This one was 4' sections of rebar driven into the ground. Earth anchors made for sheds work as well. Then there helical piles and concrete footers, among other things.
I wonder if it would be possible to build it against the wall.. like elongated, but one of the longer sides is cut off and rests on the wall of the house.. would that be possible? And would that affect its structural strength?
Definitely possible to do a half dome / zome against a wall!
Can you please show us how you did the top?
Looks like it has an overlaping roof and it vents under this to stop rain coming in......
Please explain.
Its a cupola! I will try to cover it in a future video but its very simple.
im buildin radial with bamboo tarps visqueen and pipe pieces for footing points
16' diameter germinatin flowers
How does the plywood door jamb interact with the ground and moisture?
If it's on gravel its usually ok, depends on the climate. I always treat my exterior wood though!
Very complicated for most people but you make it look so easy.
How many days does it take to prep in the shop and how many on site to assemble?
Check out my step by step video on yt its easy when you break it down. Should only take a week or two in the shop. A day or two on site
How warm do these get in the summer sun, just picked up your full pack of designs and contemplating throwing one over the top of my little stock tank pool outside. I'm in the North East, of the US.
Awesome!
So it does get hot in the summer Sun as this is basically greenhouse. However you will want to add ventilation like I did here (not necessarily a cupola, but you can also add shade cloth over it in the summer time to turn it into a shade structure!
What does 4 frequency mean
you need to read up on geodesic domes, the frequency is a fundamental part of dome design. 4 frequency means in this case that the lower wall can be level.
BIG FAN!
Great build.
What thickness ply did you use for the side panels on the door?
Is there a permanent air gap on the top piece to draw the hot air out?
3/4”
And no the cupola is operable!
I live in Montana. What about snow load??
You can bury this thing no issues
Terrific design. Would like to build one.
We live on the prairies in Alberta. During construction we would never have two or more days without substantial wind. Any ideas how to put the panels up in a wind? Perhaps a giant net to encase the whole building footprint?
Thank you! Well the panels will easily go up in a day so you shouldn’t have an issue there. I would just build the windward side first to protect the leeward side from catching wind
@@trilliumdomes sounds good. I will speak with my local craftsmen. I am, perhaps, paranoid about the wind!
@@tomhamilton7726 understandable! Just do some googling about domes and wind. There’s just really not much for the wind to grab onto
Hooked on your videos Johnny. Amazing content! What software do you use to plan out your builds?
Thanks Henry! I use a mix of programs depending on what I'm going for. I'd say start messing around with some and seeing what you're most comfortable with! There's a lot of options.
are you able to calculate the snow load for each dome and zome?
I have load calcs being done on the most popular dome designs. Should have them by the end of the month. If you need a specific design done I can get my engineer to do it for whatever it costs him to do it!
@@trilliumdomes perfect. i'll be in touch soon then. I'm in the kootenays of BC and theres tons of snow here. pretty excited to build one of these.
@@salmeli5886 great! Yes they do absolutely fantastic in the snow! This one in particular is in a snowy area in WA state and had a significant amount of snow on it last winter. I’ll see if I can get some pics from the owner. We’ve had multiple people standing on the apex at the same time as well.
I’ve been following your videos for a while on instagram, im a huge fan of your work! I’m a full time carpenter and really want to build one of these. I’m definitely going to buy some plans off you. I want to build a small one and then eventually a larger zome as a cabin. I’m curious, what software do you use for making your plans? Thanks!!
Did u anchor the wall to the ground
Yes
Could you build a dome over a concrete slab?
Of course!
Are you selling pre built panels? I missed that somewhere.
It would be hard to ship them very far all put together. I could do a flat packed kit where the customer would then assemble the panels.
@@trilliumdomes where are you located? May just be a matter of bringing a big trailer:)
@@thesidburgess based in Olympia, WA
@@trilliumdomes You could sell the precision cut wooden sticks.
If flat packed, some colored marking on the adjoining edges would make assembly easy. Would only need clamps and a big bucket of screws.
Did u tape the joints on the outside
Yes
What sort of windspeeds can this take?
I haven’t had this specifically analyzed for wind loads but domes are pretty much the most aerodynamic shape for a structure you can have.
how do these hold up in high winds? (100mph+ gust)
Amazingly well. I like to put a clamp latch on the windows so you can secure them if you know for sure some insane weather is on its way.
Who makes those aluminum red shingles ?
Reinke aluminum shakes
How are the pony walls secured down? Or are they just sitting on the ground? Awesome videos saw it on tiktok now digging in your yt
So the bottoms are PT and they are sitting on compacted gravel. Then they are anchored into the ground with earth anchors
Hi there Can you build a dome for me in Canada ? I’m located in Halton Hills Ontario ?
This is the one I wanna build but without the pony wall or a different sort of wall.🎉
Trilliumdomes.com has tons of designs
Great design💪. How do you seal between the panels/polcarb?
Good flming as well. Cool use of 360 camera👏
@Trillium Domes Thanks for the reply. I was hoping for a bit better solution.
Unfortunately, with my experience, outdoor silicon jobs (even the best quality) are never lasting, I presume especially with polycarbonate as it would expand and contract allot? How are your structures standing against time?
@@VideoEngineering it’s a very good system! You can also add flashing profiles and overlapping metal trim as well.
What software do you use for your designs?
Sketchworks
Much respect on your designs and builds. Can give an estimate of cost of materials for this dome?
It depends on a lot, what materials you use, the purpose of the dome, what foundation type. This one was 7k in materials and cost for all twinwall polycarbonate and aluminum shakes, the door, plywood on the pony walls etc. So you could certainly build it for much cheaper.
Id love to hire you guys.
How are these anchored to the ground?
Depends on the foundation type. For this one it’s just earth anchors because it’s on gravel, I show the instal briefly toward the end of the video
@@trilliumdomes So all this info is in the build plans when i purchase it
@@Geminiced yes I talk about various methods for anchoring the domes in the plans. You are also always welcome to reach out with your specific project details and I’m happy to help. Like I said there’s as many ways to anchor as there are foundation types. So it will be easier for me to give you an idea when I know what it’s going on. Wood and concrete foundations for instance are anchored the same way a traditional structure would
Ok, thank you , we get a lot of wind here pretty strong sometimes , i didn't want it to launch like a kite on those days. Thanks for the quick reply
can i buy the materials from you ? love it
Like a kit? Sure! you can email me at goldentrilliumgeo@gmail.com
You SIR! Are a Master Domesmith! 🤠🫡
OUTSTANDING WORK WELL DONE!
If I would build one like it, can I live in it? just converting it a place for work online etc?
Yep you can just put a real roof on and some insulation if you want!
@@trilliumdomes thanks! What do you think is the best material to apply as a roof for the dome? you know .. the weight.. waterproof .. winter and summer conditions etc.
@@shakeralbohaisi4194 most any roofing will work. I like reinke aluminum shakes but you can use asphalt as well.
are the hinged hubs any good ?
I don’t use hubs at all. I find them more trouble / expense than they’re worth
@@trilliumdomes what about larger domes tho?
@@FourthWayRanch depends how big. You can build quite big with no hubs of the design is right and the Timbers are properly sized
How much is this dome?
This one was about 8k usd in materials and cost (fuel, etc.)
@@trilliumdomes at income tax time I maybe getting in touch with you then
@@franklinkeeley2327 Sounds good!
Honeycomb Geo door possible for low cost?
I don’t see why not!
Hello. Has anyone used your design as the substructure to cover with straw bales and coated with stucco to build a straw house?
Not that I know of but I don’t see why it would work! Then you’d have a nice wood interior as well!
What did this one cost
6k in materials I think
How much do you pray asking for windless days , the best regards Master John Zbigniew Canada , thanks 4 inspiration , dziekuje
Glad you enjoyed it!
Oh sorry man. I must have not seen that part of the video. Cool dome either way.
Do you recommend a concrete slab for permanent domes?
It depends on the use case but it's definitely an option. Not necessarily though!
Literal barn-dom-inium 😂😂😂
Near the end you made a lot of us "DIZZY!" LOL!
How much did this project cost you altogether??
About 7k in cost, all premium materials
Why don't you reply to any if the comments and quesions???
I absolutely do!
