In this short scene you can really tell how much the brothers love one another and really dont consider each other mistakes or overachievers or none of that. It's made very clear that the tension originates from the father and I think that's a more accurate representation of what it's like to be seen as a failure in your father's eyes. The idea that the brothers have each others backs and love one another no matter how different their lifestyles are.
Sad that also the beloving brothers had an affair with the same woman. They (who wrote it) really wanted to get deep with this film. I felt hurt at the end.
It doesn't justify sleeping with your dead brother's wife... I saw this long ago but there's a lot of fish in the sea to this kind of thing to a family

Agreed, you can even see how at 1:40 the Dad is enjoying humiliating his own son in front of everybody. And like you stated, once he got the reaction he wanted, he leaves and plays the victim.
It is like assassinating a king versus beating him on the field. When one person cannot be beaten the normal way then you wear them down because it is the only way you can fight or win.
1:40 Their father’s smile always gets me. The way he expected and almost hoped that’s how Tommy would react to his comment. Just another way to reassure his disappointment in Tommy by needlessly provoking him causing Tommy to cause a scene and come off as the bad guy.
