Great live show I saw them in ‘06. I’m not even a big fan I just enjoyed the show. They are very tight on timing. Devil in Jersey City is fun. They are nerdy for sure but talented

Prog has just become a synonym for guitar nerd music. There's some good stuff, but most of it is just scale practice set to drums
As an avid fan of Coheed and Cambria, it is interesting to hear someone tear apart the band. People have opinions. It's fun to hear them sometimes. But honestly, it was a lot repeating the same issues. (should have been maybe 10mins long tops) I know personally some bands that have opened for them I disliked very much. But I am there to support the bands that take the time to show up and do their thing. That includes the bands that I disliked. Coheed and Cambria isn't for everyone. But the fans that like them, are true fans and the fan base grows every day.
Even since Dr. David Thorpe's article on this band, I'm happy to say that I've never knowingly heard this band.

These guys just don't like any bands. I mean it's kinda funny, and I wanna give them the benefit of the doubt and assume it's supposed to be, but some of the things they say are uncalled for, inaccurate, or just based on wild assumptions. Like they haven't even listened to the band. It's obviously more impressive if someone who doesn't know music theory has this level of ability. 90% of these criticisms/arguments aren't even logical, or they're based on false premises. Like, are they mad because this band's music is inaccessible to them? It's not predictable or definable enough? Sounds like they are butthurt by something that's not dumbed down enough for them. It's like they reference singles from the most mainstream bands and say, it's not this, so it sucks. Like they listened to only a couple of Coheed's singles, made a surface level judgment, read their Wikipedia page, and then just filled in the rest with prejudiced speculation. Just cause they're too dumb to have multiple interests musically doesn't mean everyone is.
^Combed thru a lot of comments--far & away the best one.. Kudos for doing what the hosts apparently cannot: organize an opinion into rational thoughts; back up views using source material; & display an "I've spent more than 45 minutes w the 15 hr discography I'm about to discuss" lvl of understanding of the band (& at a torturously long length--this shit is 43 minutes long?! Think I'll do the same amount of work these guys did preparing for this by listening to ab 2% of the total material). Not exactly a mystery why these rad bros are rocking a wild n wicked 8 thousand subs lmao.

I saw Coheed and Cambria in July and Iron Maiden in August last year, fucking hilarious shit, great episode. The band that opened for Iron Maiden was a million times worse than the worst Coheed and Cambria song of all time.
This was hilarious coming from a huge CoCa fan who actually bought a Gibson Explorer because of Claudio and took no offense 😂
Alright, last video I watch of this. I don't like Coheed and Cambria...but all together you are just contrarian for its own sake. You think Zeppelin and Black Sabbath suck? But you think the Stooges are so brilliant? You think Game of Thrones books were among the worst you've ever read? Do you ever speak outside of hyperbole? It gets old after a while. I understand this is your gimmick, but they still to this day have complete creative freedom with their music, even in a major label, (Road Runner Records...Slipknot.) gotta admit i'm a little upset. i don't know where the elitism aspect is coming from. as a coheed fan i've never seen elitism in the community. its mostly some nerdy people enjoying rock songs about at space opera. they aren't the best band ever, but to my knowledge they never claim to be. and all the songs sound the same, really? they definitely have a certain style but i'd say they change it up a decent amount. and please stop gatekeeping prog. coheed is prog. also their live shows are super fun. also also welcome home is their only metalish song? did you listen to their discog?
edit: you guys clearly didn't do much research for this. a quick google would tell you that the music tells the stories and the comics flesh them out for anyone that wants more detail. so music before the comics. also fuck off, it is told in mostly chronological order. the first 4 tell the same story chronologically then the next three are prequels, then the most recent one is a sort of sequel with a new story set some time in the future. its really not that hard to figure out.
As a fan, I've seen enough elitism for the both of us. :D

There's a lot of things I love and hate about c&c. I like the vocals, a lot of the riffs, and the fact I can hear the bass perfectly. Things I hate tho, is the guitar tone, the generic songs, the over production, and lack of variation between albums.

If Coheed isn’t your thing,
then fine. (Even though their first 3 records are some of the finest prog rock in the last 20 years). But the story is, and always has been completely secondary to the music. It’s there for the people who are interested, but is not needed to understand or enjoy the music. A huge chunk of the fan base isn’t interested in the story. So you’re pretty fucking wrong about the story being so vital to the band and it’s followers.

Does it really matter when the theme is so prolific? If a fiction horror author writes books about awful things, well...that's what horror fiction does. If a horror author writes 12 books and they are all about incest rape then maybe it's not so far-fetched to think there's something wrong there. There's a point when someone crosses the line of an artistic medium and is pretty much just telling you their message.
@@davidjack7418 I would assume there is something wrong - the author had something happen to either them, someone close to them, or both, that it must have been impactful for them to keep going back to it. there would have to be way more going on than thematic frequency to tip me off that secretly the author was condoning the actions of the incest rapist

This man doesn't write like he's telling a story of something tragic from a sympathetic point of view. He writes like it's reliving a tragedy he committed. That's just....disturbing.

They don't seem to understand the concept of writing fiction, or the separation between art and artist. Maybe Claudio Sanchez HAS been through some shit, or said or done shit he regrets, or has had things happen to him. I mean most PEOPLE and certainly most artists experience emotional pain, and use their art as a healthy outlet for coping with it. What the hosts have done with this episode, and what you have done with this comment, is go ahead and assume that, since Claudio wrote a story that includes a character who is violent toward women, Claudio must himself be violent toward women in real life. That's a leap that's uncalled for and really out of touch. Would you prefer that no artist ever explore unsavory topics through their chosen medium? You don't have to like it, but illogical leaps and wild assumptions are not the same as valid criticisms.
@@genequist3859 I don't know what the artist has been through personally, and I haven't assumed what they have and haven't. What I said was that at some point a song, a story, any art whatever it may be...if an artist is communicating a particular thing in a particular way over and over it begins to look less like a performance and more like just witnessing someone play out a fantasy for themselves.
People don't struggle understanding fiction, or separating art from fiction. Stephen King writes horror fiction books, many in gory detail. People know the author himself is not this person. Marilyn Manson was a very polarizing figure for a long time, but after just a couple appearances on the David Letterman Show the world understood he wasn't some monster. People may study art objectively, but that's not how people enjoy art. People enjoy what they connect with, whether it's the art or the artist. There's often this idea, peddled rather frequently by fans of this artist, that somehow people shouldn't have a personal opinion about art. That's exactly what people have. People can, do, and should judge art for themselves, personally. It is a medium that invites interpretation, and not everyone settles on the same thing. We all know this. Humans are not new to art, or music, or studying either, and they certainly don't need an education to have an opinion on it.
This stuff is not complicated. The defense is always the same: "you just don't understand". I understand perfectly well. The Coheed and Cambria crowd are the same people that insist that "Infinite Jest" was the best book ever written, or require the use of the word meta at least once in the description of everything. It's like reading Emily Dickinson's poetry; you can insist all you want that verbosity or a good lexicon or use of metaphor somehow makes something deep and complex. It doesn't. Sometimes it's exactly what it looks like. If the only way to find validation in something you like is to spend all your time proselytizing about it then perhaps it's just you that doesn't get it.

I first heard coheed because of rockband, welcome home of course. I wouldn’t say im a fan fan but I definitely go back and listen to some of their music for nostalgias sake. It was pretty funny hearing yall rip into them. Especially the lore, that shit has always baffled me. I just find a couple of their songs catchy so I listen to them, but some folks treat it like a religion and ive always found that weird as fuck
