100% facts!! And many parents are afraid of telling their children to get off of the phone, go read a book, eat your veggies, its all about just giving the kids their gadgets to shut them up.

Some parents might be afraid of that but many are just bad examples. How many adults read books and how many plays silly game on their phones or checks facebook/instagram... How many parents is eating in fast food or gets processed food because it is easier than chopping some vegetables? How many people (especially in US) drives everywhere and how many find time for long (or even short) walk? I need to constantly remind myself to do something for myself. Got myself a tablet two years ago (still have not got proper smart phone) and I found out that I used it for 50% of the time on stupid, time consuming games with no progress, no story, no value, just ads and flashy animations. I have managed to convince myself to delete them and found at least some brain engaging puzzles and stuff. And started to learn languages. Also recently I decided to make longer walk home from work even though I have bus station just in front of my house. I cannot spend all day sitting. It is not healthy, and frankly I like walking, but it is so hard to start doing something. It is easy to keep good habit. It is even easier to keep bad one. Very easy to see on other what they do wrong, but so hard to see yourself and even harder to do something about it. I have to constantly try to build good habits and it seems to work.

@@NetAndyCz Good job on trying to improve yourself, for me it was cutting off my facebook addiction nearly two years ago, I had become obsessed with status notifications and how many likes I was getting on selfies. These days I focus more on learning new skills and reading more books.

You are so right about children and their illnesses. It is up to parents to limit game time. In our family, the kids are on soccer teams year round. Baseball teams in the spring and summer. Martial arts year around. An early bed time by other family standards (9:00 p.m.). We are guilty of eating too much fast food but we do also cook, about 50/50. I have observed that the neighborhood kids play way too much on their game consoles. In our family no game consoles on week days during the school year. 2 hours a day during the summer but only in the evening. I babysit the grandsons during the summer. We have them enrolled in the summer reading program so I pick them up at noon from their martial arts class, we go home and eat, change clothes and go spend an hour or two at the library. The 12 year old reads at 8th grade level. The 7 year old is reading at 4th grade level.
The kids also just got a new puppy and the grandsons are responsible for walking the dog while mom and dad are at work. They wanted the pup so they had to agree to accept responsibility for it's care and maintenance while mom and dad were at work in order to get it.
I am so glad you emphasized garlic and onion as seasoning. I'm obese as a result of joint and muscle damage from chemo. I'm struggling to lose weight but working on it. Have vitamin and mineral deficiencies too. But working on it. But in our family we ADORE GARLIC AND ONION. My mom laughs and says I'd take that last bite of onion even if it would kill me. We also use lots of bell pepper. And hot peppers. And hummus with fresh veggies. One snack I make the grandkids is take a stalk of celery, stuff it with cream cheese, top with a slice of bell pepper and wrap in a thin slice of deli meat, usually turkey or ham. Not exactly a great snack but certainly better than chips.
By the way, I shared your rant on Facebook. I felt it was important to get out there where parents could hear it from a licensed professional! Please don't give up, you are the children's best hope of their lives being changed. Keep repeating yourself. If you can get through to just one family you've saved those kids!

But his teachers want him to sit down and shut up (at 6!), so they are feeding him drugs. She's also used the tablet as the electronic nanny since forever. Amazing when I was growing up, I was only allowed to watch certain programs in the evening with my family and on Saturday morning I could watch TV. Children now are not allowed to develop their imagination or even learn how to entertain themselves. Thank you again for addressing this sad issue.

I just love you and the positive energy you put out. I was not born here but children are suffering because they have no safe place to play, especially those who live in apartments. I used to make an effort to take my son to the local park to play every evening after school and work. I would walk around the park while he played basketball with other kids. Parents have to figure out what works for their families because childhood obesity is not a joke!

They really aren't that proficient at carrying on a simple conversation. It's sad and frustrating at the same time. Why do we have to stare at screens all day? Are we hypnotized? Oh crap! I am starting to sound like my parents when I was young. They'd say, "Get away from that TV! It's a beautiful day. Don't you want to go outside and play?" Oh no! I am turning into my parents. AAAAAAGH!!!!! Help me! Can we tawk? LOL You are making a difference, my good doctor. Never forget that. I know it is hard to see, but you are. Feel free to rant. Even doctors need to sometimes. I just thought I'd add this thought. I bought an instant pot around Christmas. It is a lifesaver. You can prepare a meal with FROZEN chicken in under an hour. And not that rubber chicken you get from a microwave. It's a pressure cooker, slow cooker, rice cooker and steamer all in one. Quick, easy and fresh. And cheaper than fast food. Just a suggestion to throw out there.

Nutritional changes will help. I went to making fresh juices and when the body is given the proper nutrition it needs the body begins to heal and correct itself. I stick by and swear by a carrot apple juice. If nothing else, just that juice alone will help cure a lot of problems. Those cures will be magnified if junk, meat, and white bread is taken out of the diet as well. The pans we cook in, and the signals and frequencies we are being bombarded with are other problems affecting adversely the human body in todays modern world. It is very good to see a doctor like you, who actually cares; and is observant to what is going on around them in the world affecting people.

The hearing loss one is the most annoying. I was 17 when I started using earbuds regularly. I refused to use a smart phone until I was about 16, but that's when I realised I could load music onto it and bring it everywhere with me. I immediately noticed hearing loss in my left ear, as I would often keep one earbud in and leave the other out so that I could still hear what was going on around me.
I switched to actual over the ear headphones and stopped using them every day ... not sure if it actually helped much, but it felt like it did. However, going without music for extended periods of time is soul crushing.

Omg-thank you for sharing as a pediatrician. I’m a pool mental health therapist that work with MD DO etc. I prefer not to work with this particular pediatricians because he thinks I can make miracles happen, spend hours with his patients, make numerous phone calls for his clients and hold these parents hands and walk them step by step (beyond billable limits; I only have so many pro bono cards to give a year)
Sometimes parents need to get into counseling to help themselves to help their children...it’s only so much (in a medical clinic as a pool worker) that we can do to keep our sanity.
I would have my child see this pediatrician that I’m taking about but can’t work with him-the stress of his job spills out and I see and feel his energy but I think he cares for his patients.
I think he’s on edge with work considering today’s basket of crap surround caring for children -lol that why in private practice I stop seeing kids --too much paperwork, liability, and uninvolved parenting. I don’t need the stress on my sanity.

I found this tiny book from The School of Life “Phone Detox” and took it with me to read on the train one day. If not for the shape and size of the book, which pretty much imitate a smartphone, I might not have been able to brave through all the pages, really! And I only realized it when I felt this odd comfort in holding this phone shaped booklet... I’m lucky to have grown up in the 80’s and I know what climbing roofs and trees and coming back home with scratches and bruises feels like. True, kids don’t play the same way anymore. And what about the youngest, the Truman Show generation, whose lives are being documented by their parents on social media from the day they’re born? All the videos that are so funny today and that will be so humiliating when they grow up? Aaagrh, a whole different rant!

Not sure if you have read any of Michael Pollan's book (such as Cooked or The Omnivore's Dilemma), I cannot recommend them enough!
As for the smartphones/tablets, I think it is okay for kids to have them, but under two conditions. Their time with them should be limited, and parents should keep an eye what kids use them for. I think PC content is usually way more engaging, but there is so much of great educational apps as well as just awesome games that may help children develop reflexes or intelligence. Though there is so much of 'junk' content that is designed to suppress any brain activity and just force you to watch an ad after an ad, it is like Las Vegas in your phone designed to rob you of your time (and sometimes money as well).
Same goes for television, time should be limited. There are some great cartoons that can sneak in moral values or advanced vocabulary and have good storytelling. And there are shows that are just great as having something in common with other kids.
Reading is so great though. There is no better way to learn grammar, new words, train your imagination. People need to keep in mind that children mimic them, you have to read your kids and they will get interested in books themselves. If you spend all your day watching TV or playing with your phone, how are kids supposed to know it is not good?
PS: Love your rants, and your world-view.

She said it was because she realized it wasn't going to be healthy for me. I remember being so upset, but now (at twenty-five) looking back, I'm thankful for her decision to do that. Too many people use entertainment as a babysitter and pacifier for their kids these days. When kids can't sit still, parents think something is wrong with them and want them diagnosed and prescribed something to subdue them so that they don't have to go out of their way to accommodate the need for activity in their growing child.

Always looking down at devices is the reason more people now have bone spurs at the base of the skull. The human head, about ten pounds, is supposed to face level most of the time but when looking down, that weight forward of the spine puts additional strain on the muscles that attach to the skull, forcing additional growth.

If need be writing directions out on a Rx pad for parents who can't seem to get it through their skull that children need to "breathe" more should be alright by them and yourself.*

I’m British. Sometimes it sneaks out in my pronunciations. You can say it both ways. You say “to-may-toe”, I say “to-mah-toe”. 😏

Uh oh, you used the dreaded “f” word. Perhaps you’re unaware they are “thick” not fat. And there is a little thing called body acceptance. 😜

in2food You’re right! I can’t say “fat” or “obese” anymore. To be PC, I have to say that they’re “greater than the 85th% for their BMI” (🙄), which means absolutely nothing to a parent who stuffs their kids with French fries and chicken nuggets!

OK, so phase away from pediatrics and run for office. You are passionate about what you believe, now you can do something about it rather than just rant... Love your rants though...

Bob Mardigian Lol! My son actually ran for a position in our local government and won a historic election. He’s on our county Board of Education, and is the first person of color, and the youngest to ever serve in that position. After helping out with his campaign, and seeing what kind of work that was put into a local race, I am sure that there is absolutely no way that I would ever even think about running for anything! I’m flattered by your suggestion though. ☺️
