    Amen! What are the teachers teaching. Basic mathematics, yes but the kids have calculators /phones and are allowed to use them in class. Cursive is no longer taught because kids can't read it, because of technology. You are right!

      Oh! Nothing bothers me more than schools NOT teaching cursive! It’s such a lovely skill to have. I had to teach all three of my kids cursive so they would have it at their disposal. Unfortunately, they haven’t used it like I had hoped they would. 🙁

    The abiliity to write with a pen or pencil is our last defense against The Machine, folks!! whenever I want to really remember something I write it down three times--because the act of writing helps hardwire the information into our brains! Teachers used to know this: the three "gates" to learning are the ears, the eyes and the hands (or body)--and our memories last longest when it's something we've done ourselves. They used to call it "hands on learning." Writing things down is part of that.
    It's sad that parents complain that kids ignore them--and then when they are interacting with their kids and get a text, the first thing they do is turn away and attend to the phone first!

    It's so nice seeing you again, welcome back! I manage a laboratory system at a major hospital. I'm amazed when we, unfortunately, have a system downtime and go to downtime procedures - you write the lab results on paper slips. The staff falls apart and behaves as if it is the end of the world. When I worked in the lab we had no LIS, everything was charted on paper (dr. copy, chart copy, billing copy...lol I still remember those days). And yet we survived.

    What you say about writing things down is SO true! I had to learn radio code. This has illuminated something very important to me. I'm a staunch proponent of one exercising their brain, yet hypocritically, it shames me to say that I've honestly forgotten how to write. I used to have the neatest handwriting when I was in elementary school, but upon the advent of ubiquitous technology, it's literally been over a decade where I've written anything. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say that my hand puts a pen to paper no more than a few times a year if I need to sign something.
    I get laser hair removal, and for every appointment, I'm presented with a paper with lines and I need to sign it every time I go. It's wracked up my name like 11 times each time I've signed it and it shocks me to see how poor my handwriting is. It's terrible! It looks like a stunted child's handwriting.
    I think I need to keep a pen and paper at my desk and be sure to WRITE more regularly.
    Thank you, darling Dr. Blaire.

Due to my epilepsy, I can not drive and am forced to use the bus system and while I take a book and read, I cannot help but notice that 2/3rds of the people on the bus are staring at their cellphones the entire time, as though they are taking orders from their electronic overlord. Thomas T How sweet of you to think of me and my family! We’re still taking things day by day. The month of May will be exceedingly agonizing, for several reasons. First, my daughter’s birthday is early in the month. Second, the last time we were together at church was when she flew down from school early to surprise me on Mother’s Day, and third, she would be graduating from Harvard with distinction later this May. It’s gonna be a tough few weeks ahead. So that’s why God laid me on your heart, bc I’m going to need all the thoughts and prayers that I can get to help me through the next months. Thanks for contacting me. Be blessed.

    Pertaining to your video on the likelihood of children developing ADHD, I couldn't agree more. I try not to be a judgmental person, but when I witness an infant with a tablet as big as themselves, I think it's disgusting. A sweet, malleable, imaginative young mind sedated by a device of more stimulation than their little heads can comprehend, only to minimize their attention spans and nullify the capacity to use their brains. What is going on?!
    Call me old-fashioned, but I see the benefit in children playing... REALLY playing. I'm not against video games. I love video games and I play them a lot in my adult life, but I think it can be too much for a very young child's mind to imbibe.

    I still think that Wall-E is the most accurate prediction of the future to day. It is incredible how lazy and dumb people are depicted there, but it so accurately follows the trends we see all around.
    I may not memorize phone numbers, but I remember quite a few passwords:) And I do write them down, especially at work where they change all the time:p
    Anyway, thanks to the smartphones (well the tablet in my case) the education is much more at your hands than ever before in the human history. It actually does wonders for my language learning. And there are amazing apps for maths as well and wonderful online and offline encyclopedias and other stuff. Lots of phone games are incredibly good at wasting your time, without much of any reward actually. I tried some and I could play for 20 hours a week without getting anywhere, it is better to read book or something. With a little bit of willpower you can create some handy habits and make real progress.
    Especially language learning can be so rewarding, but learning to be a pilot or doctor or lawyer you need to memorize bunch of stuff but more importantly, you have to be able to apply the knowledge. Computers are great for storing the knowledge and it is imho helpful to use them for that and learn to use them efficiently, but so far computers cannot imagine and cannot really think. That may be for some time unique to us and we should train ourselves to get better at thinking and applying knowledge (though it is much easier to apply it after you memorized it). It is all about getting the right motivation, creating a healthy habit of using the brain and then it kind of goes itself.

    Also, physical therapists are saying that the youth in this country have necks of a 50-year-old because they spend so much time with their heads forward, looking at their phones. It's causing the natural curve of their necks to straighten out.

    The question is why do we want to use our memories? I think the whole point is about our evolution and adaptation to modern times, same why we don't walk or ride a horse to work or give up the machine in labor work in excuse that it weakens our muscles. I think better advice is to use whatever works best for you and adapt to the current or else we will be left behind.

    • @AppleSlicesUnite
      @AppleSlicesUnite 5 років тому

      The body and mind are not sustained by living a sedentary lifestyle. If you don't use it you lose it. This fact is basic FACTUAL knowledge. Our minds are only as sharp as the tools you give it. If you allow a machine to do all the thinking for you, you will go dumb. I notice you are pretty young (if that's you in the picture) wait and see when you get older and you'll wonder why remembering simple tasks are not so easy anymore. I used to be able to do math in my head easily and with accuracy down to the penny but now I have to write it down and go over a few times just to make sure. I used to be able to remember 20 phone numbers in my head, I don't even know my own son's phone number because it's in my phone book. Technology is great but we need to keep up with our human survival and not keep up with technology.

    • @Nour-le8jn
      @Nour-le8jn 5 років тому

      Apple Slices Unite if you go back in history you will see a lot of people and stories about people with extraordinary brain capabilities like it’s almost a norm back in the days, yes that’s fine because the need of the certain brain feature is a survival need. Now we don’t need that and I can assure you now we are way smarter and safer than before (ref: enlightenment now - Steven Pinker) our brain capacities doesn’t grow or shrink, as matter of fact it doesn’t disappear, fundamentally it shifts and pivots to adapt, when the robots take over our daily brain tasks it’s not that we will stop thinking and training our brain muscle, our brain will shift and pivot to think about certain things. The idea that brain will stop working or slow down in general is not proven, yes the brain can slow down at certain things because it cares about survival and using what it needs. The brain knows better.

    I banned all the gaming consoles from my house when our adult children were little. One thing I do for fun is compute my change back when I check out. Or compute the gasoline volume as I pump it into my car. I know I've got a 14 gallon tank so I compute the percentage as every half gallon clicks by. As for memorizing phone numbers, the friend with the most recent number has had hers for about 25 years. 😁 We are a close knit group of really OLD friends. Puzzles are good for the brain too!
