Debbie Prentice I still remember seeing this when it was new and being utterly floored by how well Colbert sings...It wasn't the first time I heard him, either: He sang on his Christmas special, and he obviously held out on us. His voice was pleasant enough, but utterly unremarkable. This time he held nothing back: He picked an EC tune I'd never heard of (and I'm a big fan), and he belted it out as though it was his own💗
Debbie Prentice I don't know his range. If songs like this are his forte, then he may not be able to pull off a crooner... He would kill at classic Country/Western--like Hank Williams, Sr. Or rockabilly☺
I must have seen every version of this on UA-cam (as well as the original segment) 1000 times, and it NEVER gets old :) Not only was finding out that Colbert has serious pipes a delight in itself, I love how his Southern accent slips through while he sings
He talked about Elvis Costello on NPR's Fresh Air. It's like a half hour interview about music that influenced him and it's pretty interesting. It's on soundcloud and i'm guessing the npr website.
It's one of my favorites. The first verse is probably my favorite drinking song. (Also, My Aim is True is my favorite album. Well, tied with Mighty like a Rose.) I never tried to hide being a massive fan, though.
Psiberzerker That was the first thing I noticed, too (that is, AFTER realizing how well he sings). I don't know if he deliberately worked on shedding his accent, or if it just faded naturally, but it's unmistakable in his singing voice.
I think he's a gifted improv comedian, and impersonator. That's basically what the Colbert Report was: Him impersonating the Conservative Talking Head for comedy, and he did that character for 11 seasons, so my guess is, he studied, took lessons, and gradually got it to second nature through decades of practice. You don't forget where you come from (The low country) though.
You're right. Since I've listened to original a few more times I've gotten to like it more than this version, which is still great by the way. I think I liked this one more originally cuz the vocals have a nicer sound to them, but Costello's version really is better.
UA-cam keeps recommending it and I keep listening. I wish this was available for download.
I wish I could buy this. Miss Comedy Central Colbert.
This song makes me so happy, I love how Stephen sings it
Stephen's got such a beautiful voice, I could listen to him singing for hours!

James Daniels I'd love to sing a duet with him one day.
Debbie Prentice Me too...and I can't even sing😁
James Daniels lol! I'd love to hear him sing some Nat King Cole, or something classic like that.

watching this live was a treat. Elvis putting that beat down with his foot, strumming the guitar. Well worth it. I hope they post that some day.
THANK YOU for uploading this!
Had a bad day at work - well this has cheered me right up!
Me too dude:)
At least some version of this exists.
This tells me Stephen is a big EC fan because you HAVE to be a big EC fan to even know this exists.

Joshua Mann after hearing this I had to learn it on the ukulele!
Those are two of my favorite EC LPs as well, Psiberzerker.
I know this song bc of the devil makes three cover
WOW< you don't get to hear his South Kackalacky (I'm from Raleigh) accent often. Especially in character for the Report.

I love this cover! No disrespect to Elvis Costello, but I like it better than his version.
I love this version, much better than the original. In my opinion at least.

both versions are elvis costello :P
this one is just a brilliant example of how pure live music can be.
I could listen to Colbert singing a cereal box. Is it me or is this NOT a video?
It's just the audio. There's some kind of copyright problem with the old Colbert Report shows
you must have Diana on whenever Elvis appears...really Diana Krall please
I watched it a ton on TV & Colbert Nation, but the hat remark means nothing when the visual doesn't move/show.
A little more twang and reverb, could be a hit!!
ahh Stephen, could you try to be more awesome next
time?
Stephen Colbert's lip service is better than Elvis Costello's, but Elvis Costello's ears are better than Stephen Colbert's, so let's call it a draw.
Let's call it a drawl, y'all.
Nah, doesn't even come close.
