They were blown away that we had little to no protections relying on a hurricane proof sentiment to our tourists and locals. They said they need to dredge the Swannanoa river 20 feet down and we need to build a wall where you saw this lady here tall enough so that if and when it floods again, the dredge will give us another twenty feet before it crests a wall. Many of our communities and townships have been wiped off the earth because lake view or river front was built into our way of life. Looking back on it, that makes perfect sense. How ignorant. It's awful here. Help is slowly but surely arriving and already here. So many volunteers cutting trees and transporting supplies or water. Civilians have astounded us with grace. Task forces, police, ems, rescue, and operators from all over the states and Canada are here helping with rescues and support. Heavy national Guard presence. Cell signal is spotty but better by day. Yes- many years. They are saying this is just as bad as Katrina all over the Western half of North Carolina. They didn't mention how severe the mudslides have been and the homes that have literally slid off mountains and floated down rivers with people trapped inside. Hundreds of helicopter rescues with thousands. More waiting to be rescued. Many towns are completely gone. It is so devastating in the entire Western half of the state and also Eastern Tennessee. So much was not mentioned in this story. There is no gas, no power, no food, no water in most of these towns and most towns were completely underwater. Does anyone else find it astounding that the news people and private helicopters and planes can get there but not FEMA? Or the very rich local government? I lived there for 14 years and am very concerned about the large homeless population there.
Local since birth speaking: Let me be absolutely crystal clear. The Asheville city council could not have dropped the ball harder on this disaster. So many factors go into this, and I'm not naïve to the fact that there's not much that could have been done short term to protect this city and the surrounding areas from a storm of this magnitude. However, I've seen more help, information, support, and genuine care being distributed by the other residents of the area than anything Asheville city council has done for us in this. They could've told people to evac flood zones DAYS before the storm, they could've been radio broadcasting after the storm helpful information, they could've had representatives standing on the corners in downtown handing out informational sheets simply describing where resources were located, they could be protecting the residents even now after the fact by calling for a rent/mortgage frreeze. The list goes on, but at the end of the day they waited too long (as they've done in the past) and by the time they were frantically telling residents to evac cell service was already cut, so only few could actually get the warning. Quality of roads go into this, which is notoriously bad in and around town, to the point that some of the roads I've driven around my entire life are almost comically bad. The local govt. has made it abundantly clear that tourism is the ONLY thing they prioritize in this town, and all I can hope is that somehow their wallets take a blow from this.
The Emergency Declaration was signed the state handles the rest... The president did what he can.. and he's supporting all efforts.. The National Guard is already in route and some there already... This is not an easy or one day op....
I can't imagine the damage it did to soil and hillsides. That whole area is very much stressed right now. I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery. May the poor souls that got overwhelmed during this tragedy rest in peace.

A town 35 miles from Asheville, Chimney Rock lost 80% of it's business district. It's in Lake Lure. I live near Asheville. This is BAD here. Power might be on 12 days after in outer areas, months near Asheville.
Was it at Mount Mitchell that 30" of rain fell? So many small communities were along rivers, that's how it is in the mountains, so many got wiped off the map. Some communities nobody can reach nor hear from. Please pray and send money for water and food, send rescuers if you can.
Asheville/Black Mountain/Swannanoa are some of our favorite places to visit. Such a beautiful place. I recognize several of the places in these vids. This will take awhile to rebuild.
I lived in Brevard and worked in Asheville and I am struggling to recognize any of these places due to the massive destruction. it just looks like a war zone in a 3rd world country.
At Asheville as I type this: luckily, lots of people’s power were returned with roughly 6,000 still remaining powerless (mainly those higher up in the mountains). We have tons of passionate volunteers delivering generators and helping clean up and rebuild. I’d like to shout out especially Baptist on Mission. They’re the greatest!
My poor mountains there are towns wiped out all over other than Asheville they will be fine they always are those tiny towns need to be checked they need the most help took three days to reach anyone and it was spotty as best
I’ve lived in WNC my entire life. Like they said, I’ve never seen anything even remotely like this. Asheville is the cornerstone of WNC. I live in a town about an hour away and it is THE place in this area to go. It has a thriving arts scene, which is one of many reasons why the destruction of the River Arts District is just so incredibly devastating. There are so many wonderful things in Asheville that, at the moment, I don’t know if they’re even still standing. It is just so, so heartbreaking seeing this beautiful city on its knees like this.
I live in Asheville NC and all these families that need a place to stay are trying to get a hotel in and around the area. Every hotel has jacked their prices up so high that you cannot even afford to get a room. I have seen prices that are usually $150-$250 a night are now $899 a night.
Sounds like you are looking for someone to blame. Towns and villages have grown up over many generations and in mountainous areas you just can’t very easily build on the side of the valley or mountains.
Yes. From a UA-cam video about a year ago: " Where Will EV Lithium Come From? In the Future, North Carolina" Elites will be buying up the property there, like Oprah did in Lahaina
i live in the obx a part of nc where hurricanes hit almost every year and i’ve never seen anything close to this i hope everyone affected can get help and resources. i read that there are 600 people missing in north carolina right now which is horrifying.
Sitting on your couch and praying won't do anything. Find out how you can donate or help get supplies down there from wherever you are, real things to help people survive.
God meets good orderly direction God cannot control events since we got thrown out of the garden of Eden we have free will and therefore we have to get supplies and do our own work to help each other
This is horrible but really don't understand why people would build a town or homes where they know that there are reoccurring natural disasters like this
Amid all this devastation I notice a lone sign hanging on a pole that’s snapped in half advertising standard poodles puppies for sale. What an odd sight.
They need helicopter support. I'm no genius so I have to assume and hope that's already being done/arranged. People who need food water and rescue can't wait for roads to be passable... Just.... helicopters. Please n thank you.
There are several air transports moving material and evacuating those who have been cut off from land transportation. I know several Chinook crews are operating in the area.
I live in McDowell county the fire dept's. are using side by sides to get into places like NC 80 and NC 226a . And we have some Black hawk helicopters also doing rescues in the same area also. Also a lot of help has come in from middle and eastern NC to help.
I live in North Asheville And There's helicopters overhead every day there's power companies from out of state National Guards here with Sakorsky's Brings tears to my eyes We're getting help We were trapped on our property for two days we had four trees go down one hit the house Not bad damage but There's people out there way worse than us Hells is floating down the river Period We're Get out of this Because this is what people of Western North Carolina do we band together That's what time it is God bless everybody Just keep us in your prayers
This is heartbreaking just to see the devastation and suffering of Asheville, praying for this community and I hope everyone gets the help they need soon 🙏🏻

All I've seen is destroyed building, and one precious lady called into a radio station that was live in UA-cam, saying she is trapped with 12 families, and she got the cellphone to work by going to the top of a hill or mountain and standing on a big tree stump. Her name is Kathleen George (Black Mtn area, Broad River Fire Dept). A little boy was having seizures !!!

Your last sentence is quite the understatement. It will take years and winter is coming in a few months.
Always takes 3 days, you should be prepared
I’ve lived in WNC my entire life. Like they said, I’ve never seen anything even remotely like this. Asheville is the cornerstone of WNC. I live in a town about an hour away and it is THE place in this area to go. It has a thriving arts scene, which is one of many reasons why the destruction of the River Arts District is just so incredibly devastating. There are so many wonderful things in Asheville that, at the moment, I don’t know if they’re even still standing. It is just so, so heartbreaking seeing this beautiful city on its knees like this.
The road to rebuild is a tough one ahead. Stay strong everyone. Have faith in Almighty God. We need God Now more than ever.

Maybe on rebuild, get out of the river basin and flood zone. And rebuild your town away from a river!
Sounds easy it's a crowded world not everyone was near a low lying flood plain. 30 inches a rain is catastrophic unless you live on a hill.
There was places that weren't in flood planes that were totally wiped out. Towns are often built around rivers. Water = Life.
Sounds like you are looking for someone to blame. Towns and villages have grown up over many generations and in mountainous areas you just can’t very easily build on the side of the valley or mountains.
Maybe evacuate California too
