10:12 WOAH WOAH WOAH! Mat I love ya' but i gotta stop you there, that's not how chemistry works. 1942,3 moles of H2O, yes we're on point so far but what you do next is completely wrong! 1 mole of H20 has 2 moles of (or 1 of H2) and 1 mole of O. So 1942,3 moles of H2O is 3884.6 moles of Hydrogen atoms and 1942,3 moles of Oxygen atoms. Think back to the hamburger example. If 2/3 are bread and 1/3 is meat then you would need 2 pieces of bread and 1 piece of meat to get 1 hamburger. You can't take 500 patties and 2000 pieces of bread and get 2500 hamburgers, you need all parts of the sum. What you're presenting here wouldn't come close to reality: If you have 213,65 moles of Hydrogen and 1728,63 moles of Oxygen then you wouldn't get 1942,3 moles of water. First of all you need 2 hydrogen atomes for the water so there would be 106.825 moles of H2. That's how many moles will react with Oxygen to form water, the rest of the 1833,475 moles of Oxygen would either react with itself or something else because there isn't any Hydrogen left to react with. This equation would form 106,825 moles of Water which is (106,825 moles * 18,02 grams per mole) 1924,9865 grams of water, WAY off your initial 35000 grams of water at 9:30. Mat please don't take offence to this, I love your videos sooo much. They're so insightful and scientifically interesting. But they touch on so many different topics and aspects of science that it would be ridiculous to think you would get it right everytime. I mean this is stuff you wouldn't have done for a long time, unless you're a chemist there is almost no practical reason to remember this. But we can't spread misinformation like this, this needs to continue to be a place of real science. Where gaming geeks and science nerds meet and enrich each other's understanding and appreciation for this world around us. I don't expect you to go through the trouble of doing this video all over again but please adress this mishap. Love you Matty (meat) Patty xoxo. Theorists please like this so he sees it! :3 (EDIT) Vigneshsella also pointed out that at 9:30 it should be 1 mole/18,02 g not the other way around. Just a minor detail, still love you Matty
10:08 Pretty sure he did the molar maths wrong. If you have 1942.3 moles of water, that's made of 1942.3 moles of oxygen and twice as many moles of hydrogen, cos it's H2O. But he's using the weight percentages there, which is wrong. If he'd said oxygen is 89% of the weight of water, then applied that to the 35 litres (or kg) he'd get the correct answer. EDIT: It took us less than an hour and one page in our notebook to do all the correct maths btw, including googling all the weights etc. Moles are hard to understand, but the maths is simple if you're doing it right. Edward is still wrong, but so is MatPat. The biggest discrepancies between Ed and wiki, using a human of 74.3215kg (total mass of Ed's formula): Potassium, sodium, chloride, and sulphur are all severely less than needed Ed has 6kg of calcium from the lime(stone) when wiki says only 1.115kg is needed Hydrogen is 4.391kg not 7.06kg as needed
@@VetyBurr yeah around there but on top of that it was an alternate world where technology didn't have as much of the advancement due to alchemy (meaning the medical field didn't advance as far either)
MatPat~ I find your Film Theories very entertaining. I recently watched the one you made about Full Metal Alchemist, which is my favorite Anime series. However, I am also a High School Chemistry Teacher. So, I feel the need to point out a number of errors, which may undermine (or underplay) the premise of the video. The title of the Video is “Fullmetal Alchemist's FATAL Miscalculation”. I understand that this video is several years old. However, since you have not revised these errors yet, I feel the need to write you. When I first saw the particular Episode of FMA your Theory is based on years ago, I made a quick calculation to see if his numbers added up to the mass of a person. I found the notes I made back then and it suggests the total mass of those ingredients would add up to 60.67 kg. That person would weigh 134 lbs, which seemed pretty reasonable. [I won’t get into the whole difference between Weight and Mass.] When I was watching your video, I could tell that there might be problems, when you refer to Salt as a “Molecule”. It is not a molecule, rather it is an Ionic Compound. This misconception is so common though, that I have even seen it on educational programs like Brain Pop. This would not have mattered too much toward your conclusion, since it is only semantics, but is shows that your Chemistry might be a little oxidized [rusty]. Later in the video you manage to avoid this issue by referring to chemicals by the more broadly encompassing term “Compounds”, which is just fine. Now it pains me to say this… but Moles was not the way to go with your calculations. Moles is indeed at the heart of many Chemistry calculations. But in this case, most of the items were already given in mass. Converting between different mass units does not require moles. The only two chemicals, that were not given in mass [Water & Ammonia], can be converted most easily to mass using their Densities. 35 L of Water x 1,000g/L= 35,000 g of Water 4 L of Ammonia x 730g/L= 2,920 g of Ammonia After that, the best way to break down the compounds would be using Percent Composition, which is also based on mass. For example in Saltpeter, Potassium makes up 38.7% of the mass, Nitrogen makes up 13.9% and Oxygen makes up 47.5%. So, you just multiply those by the mass of Saltpeter to get the masses of each element: K is 38.67g , N is 13.86g and O is 47.47g. After going through the compounds in this way and then adding up the elements that repeat, like Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen, I get the following masses: O: 31,558.9g C: 20,000.0g H: 4,434.9g N: 2,415.5g Ca: 1,072.0g P : 800.0g Cl: 151.7g Na: 98.4g S : 80.0g K: 38.7g F : 7.5g Fe: 5.0g Si : 3.0g + Trace Total: 60,665.6g Note: It is not clear if the FMA list is referring to “Quick Lime” or “Slacked Lime”. Since the Water is listed separately and the other ingredients are “dry”, I used Quick lime in my Calculations. The next issue is that the governmental data you compared this to adds up to a different "sized" person. The “Real” data add up to over 70,000 grams that is almost 16% more, therefore a larger [more massive] person. This person would weigh around 155 pounds. So, to truly compare them you need to adjust the numbers accordingly. You could either adjust the numbers from the show or the government data. I will adjust the numbers from the show. O: 36,456.1 g C: 23,103.5g H: 5,123.1g N: 2,790.3g Ca: 1,238.0g P : 924.1g Cl: 175.2g Na: 113.7g S : 92.4g K: 44.7g F : 8.7g Fe: 5.8g Si : 3.5g + Trace Total: 70,049.1g This does not at all destroy your theory that they got their amounts wrong in their transmutation. When compared to the Government’s Data, some elements match up a little better, like Oxygen and Hydrogen. Some are even farther off, like Carbon, Nitrogen, Calcium and Phosphorus. But at least now it is a fair comparison. I would recommend re-editing your video with these corrections, or posting an additional one addressing this. Keep making your entertaining videos and you can always ask me questions about chemistry. ~Bryce Pemble
@Walid Neon True that. That's what you call an "Aptronym", when a name suits an occupation. Just like when the Secretary of Education used to be Margaret Spellings. Also maybe like Steve Jobs, who generated a bunch of them?
I mean probably. It's an entire human child plus an arm and a leg. Based on the theory on the value of a soul, the body would be fine but they didn't have enough power
Definitely not because there were certain elements above the required amount needed and some below. So by adding the limbs, you would put some of the elements way over the requirements necessary. Also, the list provided was based off of a 150 pound person. We don’t know the weight of Ed and Al’s mom so the comparison isn’t significant.
+EclipsedArchon Or basically anything that has to do with science, like Assassination Classroom, with how the moon was destroyed and Koro Sensei being formed.
+EclipsedArchon Yeah, I agree. I don't know though because I feel like any number of time travel movies could be talked about in the same way, especially since Steins Gate itself would be based on a lot of present ideas about time travel! It's like, I just wonder if there's a point to him choosing between steins gate, and say, "The Time Machine" or something like that.
Oh come on man, Hohenheim was a bit too irresponsible leaving human transmutation books around, but you can see he actually loved his kids. He left to find a way to get rid of his immortality so he could live the rest of his life with them. When he heard about fathers plans he did everything in his power to stop it.
@@youthfulgreenbeast3851 He's not a bad guy in the 2003 version, he's like a 400 year old dude who kept transferring his soul to different bodies. He admits that he loves their mother and his kids tho and only left because of his decaying body. He helps Edward when they're transferred to the other side of the door at the end(Our world). At the end
10:07 Nooooooooo! Thats so wrong!!!!!!! To get the moles of hydrogen atoms he should have multiplied the moles of water by 2 not .11 because each water molecule has 2 atoms of hydrogen. Doesn't make a lot of difference to his conclusion but still... Gah! Other than that, loved the video.
Love your work Matt but, sadly I think you forgot something while making this one. While you are correct that Ed and Al didn't have correct materials to make a human, someone did. Izumi, their teacher, used her own child's corpse for her human transmutation. The perfect amount for a child's corpse, the EXACT measurements for THAT human and she still made a monster, giving up the malformed child to the gate in equivalent exchange. I also know 2003 FMA isn't cannon (I still enjoy it, both runs ARE very good and awesome in their own right.) Matt said he is focusing on the world of the 2003 FMA, not brotherhood.
Frost King I'm surprised that this comment has been bombarded with angry responses to the "not canon" thing. Even if its true, people are still touchy about it
The funny thing is that he concentrated on the original anime which is non canon after like ep 12. In FMAB its mentioned that it is IMPOSSIBLE to transmute a dead person. They werent missing stuff but they were doing something impossible
Yea I was watching and was thinking it can’t just be calculations and it’s been called impossible the entire series, not the price of a human soul but even more than that. I have a theory myself as well, could winry give Ed her gate and others as well because everyone e can do alchemy so they all have a gate so they could trade it with others correct? And so Ed and al would have there alchemy back?
@@geordineilson5476 Yes that is true but if you can trade gates then there is no reason Ed shouldn’t have alchemy since everyone has one so winry could trade hers or maybe before people dire they can give Ed their gate to bring them back there’s a lot of stuff unknown about the gates rn
They wanted their mother's SOUL back most of all, and from what little information provided in the show there is, her soul is long gone. If they had the ingredients correct, it would have looked perfectly like their mother, but in a vegetative state at best.
The point isnt that they would have succeeded if they had the measurements right, but that even if they accounted for the soul it still would have been wrong because the imgredients for the body were still wrong.
At around 10 minutes, you talk about going from moles of water (number of water molecules) to moles of hydrogen/oxygen. The way to do this is to just use the chemical formula for water directly, not involve the molar masses of the individual atoms. So, for 1942.3 moles of water, we will actually have 1942.3 moles of Oxygen and 3884.6 moles of hydrogen. We then can use the atomic mass of these values (~1 for hydrogen and ~16 for oxygen) to convert back to mass of the respective elements. In this case, we end up with roughly 3.9 kg of hydrogen and 31 kg of oxygen. Water is about 89% oxygen by mass, but this doesn't mean that 89% of the atoms in it are oxygen. Water is (aside from any impurities) always 1/3 oxygen and 2/3 hydrogen by numbers of atoms.
+Victor Smith Yes, you don't need the moles. It's roughly a mass ratio 1/9 of hydrogen to water. You know exactly how much hydrogen is in that many liters (knowing the density of water) without ever touching the moles.
The 5 triangles in a star represents the 5 elements of life. Air, earth, fire, water and spirit. They don't have the spirit element. They don't have a soul too that is why Alfonse's soul was taken. Maybe that is why their human transmutation failed. They failed to obey the law of alchemy, the equivalent exchange.
I guess you could say that since fma took place in 1914 that was probably the science of 1914 which is why they wrong it is no where near modern science
Well you can't really say how much they knew back then, as it doesn't relate to the actual real world, as they might have actually known more than they do now since they obviously know alchemy and could actually be hundreds of years ahead
There should be another FMA theory. What about one explaining the Homunculi's abilities? Like how Greed hardens the carbon in his body to create his ultimate shield, or Envy's shapeshifting. I'd love to see MatPat do a theory like that
Sam Travnik Envy's ability is the easiest to explain, he takes on any form he wants because he's jealous of how other creatures look, he's also jealous that humans stick together even after a tragedy that should've torn them apart(at least that's what is said in brotherhood), with greed, I would say that his ability comes from his avarice for friendship, he becomes a hardened monster that decimates everything, Lust's spear is most likely referencing that Lust can destroy you through any armor, Gluttony is a failed portal of truth(literally, envy says this after getting sucked in with ed) and has this insatiable hunger, Wrath was trained brutally and without mercy, combined with the pain of actually becoming a homunculus, his eye is kindof ironic seeing as Wrath is a blinding thing, but he uses it to see weaknesses and exploit them, Pride is just the recreation of father, and thus will always live in his shadow never being anything greater, Sloth is lazy and stupid but he is also strong stemming from the stereotype that the laziest people can harbor great strength. I would like to point out that the Homunculi are just Father's(Dwarf in the Flask Homunculus, yes that it his real name) seven deadly sins removed from him and put into bodies to do his bidding allow him to become perfect and then surpass any deity that exists.
Aren't the humunculi some kind of philosophers stone? In that case they won't need to act under the law of equal exchange or typical physics, right? Well, at least in Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood they were...
The philosophers stone doesn't bypass equivalent exchange, its just a battery made from humans: think of it like buying from a shop, you can carry in the coins or you can use a credit card, one fills your pocket with metal to use while the other is a piece of plastic that seems endless... until you check your account that is. This is how the hommunculi can be killed despite their philosophers stone powered regeneration, they use up all of the stones power healing themselves and then it breaks, leaving them to turn to dust. Also the hommunculi have a stone embedded inside them, they aren't stones themselves. tldr: Philosophers stones don't bypass equivalent exchange and they can run out
Himawari Uzumaki very true, they could've just trusted the formula never thinking to actually cross-check it because their dad was this great alchemist also: Himawari is the best character in boruto, ever! 可愛いいい!
Umm what about another soul? Maybe a fatter a soul. And if not 1 soul how about 2. 2 souls have to be worth more than 1. I know what the show was saying but come on . Your telling me 2 souls are not worth more for 1. ?
Me: Dang... C- in science? *watches game/film theory* Mom: Why are you watching UA-cam? Me: I'm studying!!! Mom: *listens to video* Oh ok, don't stay up too late studying sweetie!
I just remembered that FMA = to f=m•a Wich is the formula for Newton's second law Wich you probably already know the meaning of.and it's also the abriviation for full metal alchemist
It's a nice coincidence, but that has nothing to do with alchemy or chemistry in general. That's kinematics in physics, which you use for objects like humans, dogs or ham sandwiches. Particles and atoms which make up chemistry use more complex equations. Neat thought, though, really. Just felt like being a buzzkill today 😋
If the amounts were so off, maybe the reason ed and al lost their body/body part was an attempt by the alchemy thing to try and get more of what it needs?
The chemicals would have been added into the being they created if that were true but their body/body part are found whole with truth meaning they weren't put into that being
I think that a Black Butler, Soul Eater, Death Note, or Hetalia (wow, those categories made a jump-from dark, serious shows about grim reapers and demons and ridding the world of evil to countries running around yelling in funny accents) theory should be made.
same. i would know the answer and how to do it, but putting it to paper is just boring, annoying and, depending on how long it is, painful on the wrist
9:04 molar mass is the number of grams per mole of an element/compound, not the number of moles per gram. 9:31 you say "1 mole over 18.02 grams of water", which is correct, but the visual is 18.02gH20/1 mole 10:12 your percents are the percents by mass of which water is composed, which would have worked hat you multiplied by the 35000g water, i.e. 11%H x 35000g water = 3900g H, yet you multiplied by the number of moles of water. 1942.3 mol H20 is 1942.3 mol O + 2 x 1942.3 = 3884.6 mol H The results I got from running the calculations are as follows: 35L water (H20)= 35 kg water = 3917gH + 31083gO 4 L ammonia (NH3)=2.73 kg = 485gH + 2245gN 1.5 kg Lime (CaO) = 1072g Ca + 428g O 250g salt (NaCl) = 98g Na + 152 g Cl 100g saltpeter (KNO3) = 39gK + 14gN + 47gO Adding in the pure elements we get: 31558g O 20000g C 4402g H 2259g N 1072g Ca 800g P 152g Cl 98g Na 80g S 39g K 7.5g F 5g Fe 3g Si meaning our percentages by mass are: 52.18% O 33.07% C 7.279% H 3.735% N 1.773% Ca 1.323% P .2513% Cl .1620% Na .1323% S .06449% K .01240% F .008268% Fe .004961% Si aaaand I just realized you kept it in grams for the video. doin' stuff that I don't need to. way to go me. Wait but you got the masses of some of them (K, Na, Cl) right, while others were still different from mine? now you're making me think I did something wrong. I give up. Jeez this is a long comment.
I was hoping someone did this math, great job. The values you get are pretty much exactly what the show provides, which essentially invalidates the theory Matpat puts forth. Just goes to show you need to check your process. Since the value of the theory is at stake, I would point out that Alphonse's body is taken and Edward's leg is taken to supposedly provide the alchemic reaction with the life necessary to later develop into a homonculus. Lots more theory bait in the show, though, I'd love to have this theory edited and more brought forth.
Adam Vargas Sorry, I do not understand why the theory is not valid. I mean, they were converting the list in the show in order to check it against the data provided by thr US department of extreme nerdiness, so of course the data in the show match the data he has converted.. Or maybe I did not understand?
Sure but it would never be off like 300% of a basic element, which is used in a variety of places. And actually gender isn't that much of a factor as men and women are much closer to each other than a 2 year old and a 80 year old man in the sense of materials they are build of. A example for that is your consume of isotopes over your lifetime due to the fact that you live in the earths atmosphere. Resulting in the possibility to recalculate when you lived based upon how much of a certain isotop is in your body (like C17 or smth like that), which also is proportional to the amount of time you were alive. So you have a corpse and know about how old that is(many other factors to get to know that)? We'll then let's look at the c17 and this carbon isotope will tell you when your corpse was alive (assuming its from earth :D).
+Zev Davidson The formula would not depend on those things. That's like saying the "flavor" of a cake depends on the "recipe". When in fact, it's the other way around. The recipe ends up determining the flavor you get out of the cake. So the gender and other things would actually be determined by their alchemy. The age would be 0. Even if they were replicating an adult.
SoulSS No. It’s much closer to the original Manga story and it has the ending that the author originally intended. If you want the real FMA storyline, you go to to Brotherhood.
Jace Valimaa It felt rushed. I swear we got to feel closer to Maes Hughes before he died in the first version. I also felt like the reveal of what happened to Nina and Alexander, the dog, was stronger in the first one. But I did enjoy Brotherhood, having finally finished it just a few days ago. It didn't disappoint me.
9:56 One molecule of water is made up of one oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms. A mole of any molecule or atom will always be 6.02 x 10^23 of that object, so one mole of water will contain one mole of oxygen and two moles of hydrogen. If there are 1942.3 moles of water, it is made up of 1942.3 moles of oxygen and 3884.6 moles of hydrogen. the 11% and 89% applies to the mass, not the amount of molecules, and you were applying it to the amount of molecules, not the mass.
BUT EQUIVALENT EXCHANGE!!!! -Edward lost and a leg (we learn where this and his arm goes later on in the show) -Alfonz lost hs whole body Even though they're children, wouldn't they still have enough materials to fill in the gaps?
They werent standing inside the transmutation circle so their bodies were not available as material. The arm and body were lost in a completely seperate, but subsequent process (the gate).
Ah yeah, I forgot about that part. Just seeing the truth behind the gate is equal to giving up an important body part or organ that essential for a normal and healthy life
Mat, your calculation is about as wrong as can be. 1942,3 moles of water means there are 1942,3 x 6,02 x 10^23 Watermolecules. Each one is 1 Oxygen and 2 Hydrogen, meaning you have 1942,3 moles of Oxygen and 2 x 1942,3 moles of Hydrogen.
I'll never be able to fathom how a show with such abysmal writing as SAO manages to maintain a fanbase nearly as large as that of Fullmetal Alchemist, one of the most well-written and compelling stories ever presented in the anime format.
+Scott Mowry I'd like to call SAO 1-13 'Good', but I just can't. Sure, it includes some cool scenes but that's it. They compressed a storyline that is worth for atleast 50+ episodes into 13 episodes that barely presents any story (Kirito's sex life excluded, lelel). The source material presents more content than the anime, tbh. *More, as in Alot*.
They also added her heart from her original body, revealed near the end, so that was also some material that they didn't need, not to mention that it rotted along with her corpse and maybe some dirt
well hey, its the truth, it's like kids learning not to touch a stovetop by burning themselves, but in a physically and mentally scarring way. AKA Life
OnePunchMan!!!! So many questions. How Strong is Saitama? What would it take to build fully functional Genos prosthesis, both in terms of budget and actual material? (Asking for a friend.) Does SpeedOfSound Sonic actually move at Mach 1? If so, what would Saitama's brilliant crotch punch do to his chances of ever procreating? Why does the "Superhero" union have so many members with literally zero powers? Can anything theoretically kill or contain Saitama? (ONE PUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUNCH!)
-Saitama's full-force punch, according to the creator, is equal to 1/2 the force of the Big Bang that created the universe. -Unfortunately, prosthetics of that level have not been fully developed. If you would like to learn more of where we are now, you'll have to take a peek at what MIT is currently doing. Or watch a few episodes of Mind Blow. -No, if he were to actually move at Mach 1, a mach cone, accompanied by an explosion, would appear every time he moved at full speed.(EDIT) I actually went back and rewatched the first full fight. I was wrong. Considering the fact that Saitama is a near-completely immovable object, Sonic's quite lucky that his own momentum didnt carry through, as that would be the equivalent of a car running into a reinforced titanium pole at over 750mph. He would have been impaled, or just ripped in half.
The reason human transmutation doesn't work isn't because they have the wrong ingredients but actually because afterwards in FMA brotherhood ed digs up the body and realizes that what he transmuted wasn't his mom. His mom had a different hair colour and the bones are checked by Winry's grandmom who confirms that the bones are not of a women. So very simply it isn't because of the equivalent exchange but rather it is impossible to revive a human who is dead because you do not have the soul as it has gone to the other side. And well while the math might be wrong... even if it was right it wouldn't be possible.
In my theory , since the components werent even correct from the beginning , making a different human being which is not a female - housewife - ed's mom is understandable ( as he mentioned in the video that the components would make the bones way too large or the body is too dehydrated ) . As for the colour of the hair ( sorry im really not that good with science on this one ) , i would say the hair colour is determined by eumelanin and pheomelanin , maybe because of the wrong components those melanin got messed up and end up with more eumelanin ( the things that makes your hair darker )
Yes but if you think about it, didn't they try to create a new body for their mothers soul? So of course it wasn't her body. Maybe it worked and her soul was in that body but the body just wasn't functional.
Yeah but sadly it is revealed in the manga that a human soul once dead is dead and the soul cannot be brought back at all. So a soulless monster is created instead
Hold on a sec... Moles are a measure of the number of particles (atoms, molecules, etc.) of a substance. There are 2 hydrogen atoms (particles of hydrogen) and one oxygen atom (particle of oxygen) in one water molecule (particle of water,) since its formula is H2O. Therefore, since there are always 6.02^23 particles per mole, there will always be 2 moles of hydrogen and one mole of oxygen for every mole of water. This means that there would be 3884.6 moles of hydrogen and 1942.3 moles of oxygen in 1942.3 moles of water, not 213.65 moles of hydrogen and 1728.63 moles of oxygen. Chemists, can I have some confirmation on this? I didn't miss anything did I? I love your channel MatPat, but unless I'm mistaken, you've confused the way moles work with the way mass works. But don't feel bad or anything, to err is human and molar calculations can be difficult to catch on to.
He also converts liters to grams, which requires a density, which for aqueous and gaseous solutions would depend on what he assumes the pressure in the FMA world is.
Alternatively, the author isn't a chemistry major, did a brief check, said "Looks right enough" and made one of the greatest mangas of all time. So in our minds we can just adjust the numbers Ed says to something else and move on...
Actually the author did A LOT of research into alchemy. Like a fuck ton, which makes the series even more interesting. Like she made sure everything made logical sense in terms of real life alchemy and a lot of what is depicted in the manga is very much possible (just not by drawing a circle or doing the clappy transmutty) Not so sure on the chemistry tbh, but the numbers that she used may have been what was believed to be the amount back in 1914 (which is when the series is set, even though it is a fictional world).
The Dear Queer Peer I didn't say the author didn't do her research on alchemy, or the chemistry for that matter. I'm just saying it's okay that the numbers are a little off. It's an extremely complicated subject and very minor in the scope of the story. The theory feels wasted in trying to topple one of the major themes of FMA with little details. But that's just my opinion.
Whoops! Moles, as you said, refer to the number of atoms. You wouldn't calculate percentage of mass with moles, you would have to do that before the conversion from grams. If you have 1942.3 moles of water, you would have 3884.6 moles of hydrogen and 1942.3 moles of oxygen. Two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom per molecule of water. If you want to do the percentage method, you would apply the percentages to the initial 35000 grams of water. Then you would find the mole/gram conversion rates for oxygen and hydrogen separately, instead of doing water as a whole.
MatPat, moles correlate to specific amount, _not_ mass, that's what grams are for. 1 mole of anything is 6.02 x 10^23 of that stuff. So, 1 mol of water = 6.02 x 10^23 molecules of H2O How many oxygen atoms are in that mole of water? Since there is one oxygen atom for every water molecule, it's the *same*: 6.02 x 10^23 oxygen atoms in 6.02 x 10^23 molecules of H2O. How many hydrogen atoms are in that mole of water? There are two hydrogen for every water molecule, so it's 12.04 x 10^23 hydrogen atoms in 6.02 x 10^23 molecules of H2O. It's right there in the name, _H2_ and _O._ The fatal miscalculation is yours, MatPat. #TriggeredUndergradBioStudent
Moles = mass/molar mass.. we technically have the molar mass for each and every element listed in the video so, mass can easily be calculated given the number of moles.
1 mol of water = 18.02 grams 1 mol of oxygen = 16.00 grams 2 mol of hydrogen = 2.02 grams This is why water is H2O. 1942.3 mol of water x 18.02 g/mol = 35000 grams 1942.3 mol of oxygen x 16.00 g/mol = 31076.8 grams 3884.6 mol of hydrogen x 1.01 g/mol = 3923.446 grams *31076.8 + 3923.446 = 35000* This is why 1 mole of oxygen and 2 moles of hydrogen make 1 mole of water in terms of mass. 1728.63 mol of oxygen x 16.00 g/mol = 27658.08 grams 213.65 mol of hydrogen x 1.01 g/mol = 215.7865 grams *27658.08 + 215.7865 = 27873.9* Matpat did not even _proofcheck_ his work. 27873.9 grams falls extremely short of the original 35000 grams, which is why his calculations are wrong, and thus his theory in this video is based on fatal miscalculations.
28ish Kg of Oxygen is still WAY off from the 43 Kg present in the human body. So even though he got the math wrong, his fundamental hypothesis is still correct. The FMA formulas are wrong.
mrbibs350 And the other ingredients can't compensate for the lack of oxygen from the water component... So touche. But this still doesn't verify MatPat's methods; he might be a good researcher, but if he can't execute basic chemistry equations, he needs to look up people who have _also_ done the math. i.stack.imgur.com/PiZc3.png
Hey at 9:31 You need to divide by the molar mass of water to get the moles of water, otherwise, your units don't cancel. grams * (grams/mol) = grams^2/mol. You need to divide 3500 grams by 18.02 grams/mol to get the actual moles. You got the right answer so I know you must have divided but the video showed the wrong equation :)
that was the smoothest explanation for stoichiometry i ever seen... and i really liked doing stoichiometry in high school... you got the final part where you divided the atoms wrong, but everything before that was SMOTHH
I don’t know if Ed’s numbers are accurate or not, but the conversion method you used is way off. You basically used to simple and accurate methods of molar conversion and smashed them together into one unnecessarily complicated and inaccurate method.
McKay Noffz how, it’s just molar mass conversions. I don’t see how a two step process in “unnecessarily complicated and inaccurate.” Proper converting if molar mass is an exact science. It’s literally the basis of all Chemistry
@@picklenik9658 The two methods are "Divide by the molar weight of water, then use that number as the number of moles of each atom" and "Multiply the mass of water by the % of that that is oxygen and the % of that that is hydrogen". What Mat did was "Divide by the molar weight of water, then multiply by the % of that that is oxygen and the % of that that is hydrogen to get the number of moles of each atom". Right methods: 35000 grams of water ÷ 18.015 grams per mol = 1942.8 moles of water = 1942.8 moles of oxygen + (1942.8×2=3885.6) moles of hydrogen 1942.8 moles of oxygen × 15.999 grams per mol = 31082.8 grams of oxygen 3885.6 moles of hydrogen × 1.00784 grams per mol = 3916.1 grams of hydrogen -- OR -- 35000 grams of water × (percentage of water that is oxygen) = 31084 grams of oxygen 35000 grams of water × (percentage of water that is hydrogen) = 3916 grams of hydrogen The numbers don't exactly match because... rounding error I guess. (The numbers Google gave me for the molar mass of oxygen and 2×hydrogen don't exactly add up to the number it gave me for the molar mass of water.) Mat's wrong method: 35000 grams of water ÷ 18.015 grams per mol = 1942.8 moles of water 1942.8 moles of water × (percentage of water that is oxygen) × 15.999 grams per mol = 27604.9 grams of oxygen 1942.8 moles of water × (percentage of water that is hydrogen) × 1.00784 grams per mol = 203.9 grams of hydrogen It looks like Mat doesn't show the end result of this calculation in the movie, so I'm not 100% sure he didn't correct his mistake later on; but, well, he at least explained it wrong.
You probs searched about fullmetal alchemist in google then google said to youtube "Hey yt this guy searched for Fullmetal Alchemist" "Oh OK thanks I'll tell the algorithm" Same thing happened to me
+Tomas Fernandez Oh man, Psycho Pass would be so good, but only if it's like a "THERE'S NO WAY SOMETHING LIKE THIS WOULD ACTUALLY WORK IN REAL LIFE, RIGHT?" kind of thing. But I don't know what the science says on that.

What you're presenting here wouldn't come close to reality:
If you have 213,65 moles of Hydrogen and 1728,63 moles of Oxygen then you wouldn't get 1942,3 moles of water.

Pretty sure he did the molar maths wrong.
EDIT:
It took us less than an hour and one page in our notebook to do all the correct maths btw, including googling all the weights etc. Moles are hard to understand, but the maths is simple if you're doing it right.
Edward is still wrong, but so is MatPat. The biggest discrepancies between Ed and wiki, using a human of 74.3215kg (total mass of Ed's formula):
Potassium, sodium, chloride, and sulphur are all severely less than needed
Ed has 6kg of calcium from the lime(stone) when wiki says only 1.115kg is needed
Hydrogen is 4.391kg not 7.06kg as needed

MatPat~
I find your Film Theories very entertaining.
[I won’t get into the whole difference between Weight and Mass.]
When I was watching your video, I could tell that there might be problems, when you refer to Salt as a “Molecule”.
35 L of Water x 1,000g/L= 35,000 g of Water
4 L of Ammonia x 730g/L= 2,920 g of Ammonia
After that, the best way to break down the compounds would be using Percent Composition, which is also based on mass.
After going through the compounds in this way and then adding up the elements that repeat, like Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen, I get the following masses:
O: 31,558.9g
C: 20,000.0g
H: 4,434.9g
N: 2,415.5g
Ca: 1,072.0g
P : 800.0g
Cl: 151.7g
Na: 98.4g
S : 80.0g
K: 38.7g
F : 7.5g
Fe: 5.0g
Si : 3.0g
+ Trace
Total: 60,665.6g
Note: It is not clear if the FMA list is referring to “Quick Lime” or “Slacked Lime”.
O: 36,456.1 g
C: 23,103.5g
H: 5,123.1g
N: 2,790.3g
Ca: 1,238.0g
P : 924.1g
Cl: 175.2g
Na: 113.7g
S : 92.4g
K: 44.7g
F : 8.7g
Fe: 5.8g
Si : 3.5g
+ Trace
Total: 70,049.1g
This does not at all destroy your theory that they got their amounts wrong in their transmutation.

Old theory but Matt forgot something very important.
Would the elements in Al's body and Ed's leg have made up the difference?
I mean probably. It's an entire human child plus an arm and a leg. Based on the theory on the value of a soul, the body would be fine but they didn't have enough power
Definitely not because there were certain elements above the required amount needed and some below. So by adding the limbs, you would put some of the elements way over the requirements necessary. Also, the list provided was based off of a 150 pound person. We don’t know the weight of Ed and Al’s mom so the comparison isn’t significant.
Merle McClure they give the body and leg for the exchange of the Truth not the transmutation, Idk how people don’t understand that
"truth" took eds limbs and als body stayed at the gate, so only what was actually used for the transmutation would go towards the mother.

No it isnt. Do you remember how disfigured, grotesque, discolored, and freaky what they actually made was?
Water is (aside from any impurities) always 1/3 oxygen and 2/3 hydrogen by numbers of atoms.
this comment needs to be higher
+Grim scythes Agreed.
+Victor Smith Thank you!
As an actual chemist, I saw that error and literally moaned in pain
you are right.
Happy someone pointed that out. How much would that change the series?
Well you can't really say how much they knew back then, as it doesn't relate to the actual real world, as they might have actually known more than they do now since they obviously know alchemy and could actually be hundreds of years ahead
Supposelly in 03 their science aint wrong but whats happening is that in their world alchemy was more developed than chemestry
@Poop Stomp nope its england
the series is in 1914 but the guy who wrote is in the 21st century right?
Also the hommunculi have a stone embedded inside them, they aren't stones themselves.
tldr: Philosophers stones don't bypass equivalent exchange and they can run out
Not a MatPat's Theory, but a The SCIENCE! would be a better choice for this kind of complexity

Yeah, I thought of that after I watched the show.
It's a nice coincidence, but that has nothing to do with alchemy or chemistry in general. That's kinematics in physics, which you use for objects like humans, dogs or ham sandwiches. Particles and atoms which make up chemistry use more complex equations.

I dont reaaaally wanna be a turn off, but didnthe get the moles wrong, each mole of water contains one mole of Oxigen and two moles of Hyrdrogen???
Noice comment
Yes this should be a thing!
9:04
molar mass is the number of grams per mole of an element/compound, not the number of moles per gram.
9:31
you say "1 mole over 18.02 grams of water", which is correct, but the visual is 18.02gH20/1 mole
10:12
your percents are the percents by mass of which water is composed, which would have worked hat you multiplied by the 35000g water, i.e. 11%H x 35000g water = 3900g H, yet you multiplied by the number of moles of water. 1942.3 mol H20 is 1942.3 mol O + 2 x 1942.3 = 3884.6 mol H
The results I got from running the calculations are as follows:
35L water (H20)= 35 kg water = 3917gH + 31083gO
4 L ammonia (NH3)=2.73 kg = 485gH + 2245gN
1.5 kg Lime (CaO) = 1072g Ca + 428g O
250g salt (NaCl) = 98g Na + 152 g Cl
100g saltpeter (KNO3) = 39gK + 14gN + 47gO
Adding in the pure elements we get:
31558g O
20000g C
4402g H
2259g N
1072g Ca
800g P
152g Cl
98g Na
80g S
39g K
7.5g F
5g Fe
3g Si
meaning our percentages by mass are:
52.18% O
33.07% C
7.279% H
3.735% N
1.773% Ca
1.323% P
.2513% Cl
.1620% Na
.1323% S
.06449% K
.01240% F
.008268% Fe
.004961% Si
aaaand I just realized you kept it in grams for the video. doin' stuff that I don't need to. way to go me.

Doesn't the "formula" for making a human depend on gender, age, side and other things to?
+Zev Davidson I guess it would, as Men & Women have different proportions.
Edwards calculations are of an average adult human being.
+Andrew Smith Meaning you cannot make your own Armstrong. Sorry, ladies, and to a lesser extent, gentlemen.
Even if they were replicating an adult.
>uses the 2003 Anime and not Brotherhood

Cable Butkus isn't brotherhood just a spin-off?
SoulSS No. It’s much closer to the original Manga story and it has the ending that the author originally intended. If you want the real FMA storyline, you go to to Brotherhood.
Taco The Human I have not read the manga but brotherhood's story was disappointing and boring at times especially the first 15 episodes.

If there are 1942.3 moles of water, it is made up of 1942.3 moles of oxygen and 3884.6 moles of hydrogen. the 11% and 89% applies to the mass, not the amount of molecules, and you were applying it to the amount of molecules, not the mass.

oh ok.

i though that then thought no he couldn't be wrong.
BUT EQUIVALENT EXCHANGE!!!!
-Edward lost and a leg (we learn where this and his arm goes later on in the show)
-Alfonz lost hs whole body
Even though they're children, wouldn't they still have enough materials to fill in the gaps?
They still don't have the right soul.
TGC Jet x
Even if their formula was right, all they would have is a body. It wouldn't come to life because their mother's soul is gone forever.
They werent standing inside the transmutation circle so their bodies were not available as material. The arm and body were lost in a completely seperate, but subsequent process (the gate).
Ah yeah, I forgot about that part. Just seeing the truth behind the gate is equal to giving up an important body part or organ that essential for a normal and healthy life
1:48 Not MatPat dropping the OG reference to Style Theory
Same here bro 😂
Mat, your calculation is about as wrong as can be. 1942,3 moles of water means there are 1942,3 x 6,02 x 10^23 Watermolecules. Each one is 1 Oxygen and 2 Hydrogen, meaning you have 1942,3 moles of Oxygen and 2 x 1942,3 moles of Hydrogen.

I'll never be able to fathom how a show with such abysmal writing as SAO manages to maintain a fanbase nearly as large as that of Fullmetal Alchemist, one of the most well-written and compelling stories ever presented in the anime format.
Meh SAO was alright. Except for season two. Fuck season two.
+Quick Man The only good SAO episodes were 1-13. Everything after that is just painful to watch.

OnePunchMan!!!! So many questions.
How Strong is Saitama?
What would it take to build fully functional Genos prosthesis, both in terms of budget and actual material? (Asking for a friend.)
Does SpeedOfSound Sonic actually move at Mach 1?
+KyoBladezen the creator never made that claim regarding saitama's punch, where did you get that from?
+Al Frank The creator talked about it in a blog and I'm pretty sure mentioned it in a tweet, so yes he did say that.
+RavelordNito no, he didn't. Show proof if you're going to make that claim.
link?
Is this his first reference to fashion theory before they started it?!!!
But this is 2003 universe.
If they really want to, they can revive their mother, but they choose not to.
+Trey Forest You are exactly right
He also converts liters to grams, which requires a density, which for aqueous and gaseous solutions would depend on what he assumes the pressure in the FMA world is.
+Trey Forest You're right. First time I spot a mistake in MatPat's calculations. And a huge one.
im guessing you major in this stuff

Alternatively, the author isn't a chemistry major, did a brief check, said "Looks right enough" and made one of the greatest mangas of all time. So in our minds we can just adjust the numbers Ed says to something else and move on...
Or maybe it was on purpose. thats why even though the didn't have a soul the monster created was bearly in the form of a human
Ed: **recites ingredient list for a human**
Matpat: *hold my diet coke-*
+Seth Osborn But I'm sure the recipe is still really wrong. Not that I have the willpower to go through and check.
+Seth Osborn finally someone that also saw the bad math, 1942.4 moles of water would indeed make 3884.6 moles of hydrogen
+Seth Osborn *Clears throat.* NERRRRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
MarkDNF Why, thank you! :3
+Seth Osborn maybe i'm reading this wrong but if we have 1942 moles of water (H2O) wouldn't the H be 1295 and the O be 647 ?
1:50 the greatest foreshadowing in human history...
MatPat, moles correlate to specific amount, _not_ mass, that's what grams are for.
1 mole of anything is 6.02 x 10^23 of that stuff.
So, 1 mol of water = 6.02 x 10^23 molecules of H2O
How many oxygen atoms are in that mole of water? Since there is one oxygen atom for every water molecule, it's the *same*:
6.02 x 10^23 oxygen atoms in 6.02 x 10^23 molecules of H2O.
How many hydrogen atoms are in that mole of water? There are two hydrogen for every water molecule, so it's
12.04 x 10^23 hydrogen atoms in 6.02 x 10^23 molecules of H2O.
It's right there in the name, _H2_ and _O._
The fatal miscalculation is yours, MatPat.
#TriggeredUndergradBioStudent
Nice to know I wasn't the only one who caught that. And I've not taken Chemistry in almost two years.
Moles = mass/molar mass.. we technically have the molar mass for each and every element listed in the video so, mass can easily be calculated given the number of moles.
1 mol of water = 18.02 grams
1 mol of oxygen = 16.00 grams
2 mol of hydrogen = 2.02 grams
This is why water is H2O.
1942.3 mol of water x 18.02 g/mol = 35000 grams
1942.3 mol of oxygen x 16.00 g/mol = 31076.8 grams
3884.6 mol of hydrogen x 1.01 g/mol = 3923.446 grams
*31076.8 + 3923.446 = 35000*
This is why 1 mole of oxygen and 2 moles of hydrogen make 1 mole of water in terms of mass.
1728.63 mol of oxygen x 16.00 g/mol = 27658.08 grams
213.65 mol of hydrogen x 1.01 g/mol = 215.7865 grams
*27658.08 + 215.7865 = 27873.9*
Matpat did not even _proofcheck_ his work.

Right methods:
35000 grams of water ÷ 18.015 grams per mol = 1942.8 moles of water = 1942.8 moles of oxygen + (1942.8×2=3885.6) moles of hydrogen
1942.8 moles of oxygen × 15.999 grams per mol = 31082.8 grams of oxygen
3885.6 moles of hydrogen × 1.00784 grams per mol = 3916.1 grams of hydrogen
-- OR --
35000 grams of water × (percentage of water that is oxygen) = 31084 grams of oxygen
35000 grams of water × (percentage of water that is hydrogen) = 3916 grams of hydrogen
The numbers don't exactly match because... rounding error I guess. (The numbers Google gave me for the molar mass of oxygen and 2×hydrogen don't exactly add up to the number it gave me for the molar mass of water.)
Mat's wrong method:
35000 grams of water ÷ 18.015 grams per mol = 1942.8 moles of water
1942.8 moles of water × (percentage of water that is oxygen) × 15.999 grams per mol = 27604.9 grams of oxygen
1942.8 moles of water × (percentage of water that is hydrogen) × 1.00784 grams per mol = 203.9 grams of hydrogen
It looks like Mat doesn't show the end result of this calculation in the movie, so I'm not 100% sure he didn't correct his mistake later on; but, well, he at least explained it wrong.
@@Tzizenorec Thanks. That was the easiest way to get your conclusion. You showed all the math pretty well.
@@picklenik9658 He didnt accountbfor the fact that for 1 Mol of water, you have 1 Mol of Oxygena dn 2 Mols of Hydrogen.
I just finished FMA and this pops us in my recommend.
Coincidence?
I think not
You probs searched about fullmetal alchemist in google then google said to youtube
"Hey yt this guy searched for Fullmetal Alchemist"
"Oh OK thanks I'll tell the algorithm"
Same thing happened to me
Please do a theory on Psycho Pass! It has so much potential!
+Tomas Fernandez Best new anime by far.
it sure does!!! like how dominator actually work. lol
Yep
+Tomas Fernandez Oh man, Psycho Pass would be so good, but only if it's like a "THERE'S NO WAY SOMETHING LIKE THIS WOULD ACTUALLY WORK IN REAL LIFE, RIGHT?" kind of thing. But I don't know what the science says on that.
I would be really interested in a theory on the fluctuation of human psyche and if determining a snapshot of a person's state of mind is relevant for potential arrest or execution.
New Fashion Theory channel confirmed?
Lol.
I SUPPORT THIS ACTION!
u are so kawaii
+John Clements I support this action
But that's just a theory....
i would actually watch fashion theory XD
Same! Haha
Same
ditto
