Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood...Perhaps one of the most popular and well received anime out today. One of the things that surely factors into the praise FMA gets would be it's incredibly intellectual writing. Fullmetal Alchemist has some striking similarities to the work of Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher. Here to talk about this week is Kato's very own, Zero.In this episode, Zero returns to answer the mystery: What is Truth?

After watching this video, I rewatched the scene where Father/Dwarf-in-the-Flask Homunculus dies and meets Truth, and I noticed a couple of things that I thought were interesting (and some of them were also brought up by other people). The scene starts out with Dwarf wondering at why he was rejected by God, and Truth responds that it was because he didn't believe in himself, that he stole all his power from others, and that despite literally being born of a human, he viewed them as being lesser beings and instead stubbornly clung to his idea of God. Truth then directly states that in all the Dwarf's years of wandering upon the earth (which I might add was for a far longer period of time than any mortal ever accomplished, Alchemist or otherwise), the Dwarf-in-the-Flask never once grew personally. Apparently in the original manga, Truth also said something like "Stealing the power of God doesn't make you God, it just makes you a cunning thief". Truth even goes so far as to mock the Dwarf for thinking that he could surpass humans through something so simple and mundane as severing himself from his seven desires.
So far, all Truth has done in this conversation is do exactly what he has always done: teach. Truth tries to teach the Dwarf that he didn't earn his power. He tries to teach the Dwarf that he was hypocritical to think that he was greater than humans, when in fact his origins couldn't be much more human. He tries to teach the Dwarf that simply stealing the power of God isn't nearly enough to make him anything more than what he has been throughout his life: a thief. Truth even makes a passing reference to the Dwarf's attempt to cut off his seven deadly sins, which in fact only served to impede his ability to learn and grow, for what better way is there to learn than to make mistakes and suffer their consequences (and few people personalize that concept better than the Elric brothers). Personally, I think that the only reason that Truth didn't expand on that last point is because by this point in the Dwarf's life, it should have been *beyond* blindingly obvious. After all, making mistakes and learning from them is quite literally one of most fundamental cornerstones of science, Alchemy, and the general pursuit of knowledge, which the Dwarf claims to have been seeking this entire time. Or maybe Truth did briefly try to point this out, since he made the mocking remark right after he made the observation that the Dwarf never grew personally.
The Dwarf-in-the-Flask then states that he was just trying to become the perfect being, that he wanted to know everything in the world, and he angrily asks what was wrong with wanting that. And Truth doesn't respond, which I think has to do with two things: 1., there isn't necessarily anything wrong with wanting that, it was just the methods through which the Dwarf tried to accomplish this. And 2., Sometimes, people hit upon their greatest personal discoveries in the midst of ramblings that start exactly the same way as the Dwarf's conversation: asking questions. However, the Dwarf doesn't continue his line of questioning. Instead, in an act that highlights his utter lack of personal growth, the Dwarf has the audacity to ask who Truth thinks he is: "What are you? What is your name? Who do you think you are?". And it is at this exact moment that one of the most subtly dramatic things in the entire series happens:
Truth stops smiling.
You see, all throughout this entire show (or at least, so far as I can remember), Truth never once stops smiling. Because every time a mortal being, Human or Homunculus or otherwise, passes through his realm, Truth takes pleasure in trying to teach them, in trying to directly or indirectly impart to them one or more of the greatest lessons that life on earth could possibly have to offer them. And it's all so that they can grow to be the greatest version of themselves. Yet, in what was most likely one of, if not the single greatest campaign of enlightenment that Truth has ever embarked on in his own immortal "life"(?), he stops smiling. Because the Dwarf-in-the-Flask has not learned even a single damn thing in all his long years upon the earth. And nowhere is this made more clear than by looking at the only physical feature in the landscape during this scene: the Dwarf's own doorway of Truth. Remember, the Fullmetal Alchemist Edward Elric, whose own arc of personal character development would eventually lead him to hit upon the very lesson of humility that Truth was trying to teach him, has a doorway of Truth that is decorated with what resembles the Great Tree of Life. The Dwarf's doorway, however, is completely and utterly blank. Not a single character or letter has ever been inscribed upon it. Because the Dwarf has learned absolutely nothing, and never will. Instead, all that he has ever done is steal everything that he has, grow ever more and more in his own arrogance, and in the moment of his greatest boastfulness, presented his own idea of who he believed Truth/God to be as the absolute truth. Which, ironically, was the idea that Truth punished boastfulness in people. And yet, the Dwarf doesn't even recognize the very being that he quite literally only moments earlier tried to become himself. What's more is this should have been a moment of humility of the greatest degree for the Dwarf, as he literally obtained the power of God, only to immediately be brought down low and even outright killed by the very humans who he saw as being nothing more than a resource. And still the Dwarf does not learn.
Truth stops smiling, because he has failed. And now he must exact the toll for the Dwarf's sins, without granting the satisfaction of enlightenment. And some people have theorized that the punishment that Truth bestows on the Dwarf to grant him proper despair for his sins is to take him behind the doorway, and grant him the infinite knowledge that he sought at the permanent cost of the Dwarf's first and foremost greatest desire, reflected in his very pursuit for power and knowledge: his personal freedom.
And I think that this entire thing contributed to the apparently absolute and genuine joy that Truth displays in the following interaction with Edward. Because where Truth failed with the Dwarf-in-the-Flask Homunculus who sought to be the perfect being, he succeeded with Edward Elric who was only ever simply Human.

In the french translation of the last sentence on the scene, right after closing the gate, Truth, instead of sayin' "You must have seen the answer" he said "J'ai déjà répondu à cette question" wich could be translated to "I've already answered that very question" and i believe it also goes on your way. I sadly don't talk Japanese that much, i can understant a few key word and do believe that that "You must have seen the answer" is transcribed litteraly, but maybe there is a meaning in Japanese that can be close to the translation made in French

Okay, that is one of the wisest things I have heard in my entire lifetime. Wow.
It really is true. It reminds me of the book of Genesis, where the serpent tells Eve that if she eats the fruit of the tree of the knowlege of good and evil, she'll become like God. The irony in that just a few verses earlier humans are described as both male and female being created in the image of God. They ALREADY were like God, but that wasn't enough. They wanted to be more like God and abandon what they had been made as. Instead of being a means between everything and nothing, as Kant says, they wanted to become everything, not even beginning to grasp what the consequences of that would be. Which is just like Father in Full Metal Alchemist. He can't accept what he is, and so loses himself.

I recently read Nietzsche i won't claim that i understand him, but i think i have a grasp of some of his ideas, so you want to be wise?
Wisdom is only achieved trough living, to live means to suffer.
So first of all, if you currently have no kind of suffering in your life, than you're not doing anything to overcome yourself.
Get out of your comfort zone and start learning more about yourself.
And read books, i mean seriously, sure it may be annoying or even boring to you at the beginning. But there will come the moment where you will not be able to stop reading, you will feel so unbelievable enlightend.
So read read read and suffer suffer suffer.
Those are, in my opinion at least, the most important points to gain knowledge or wisdom.

Quoting the incipit of the opening:

If one wishes to obtain something, something of equal value must be given. This is the law of equivalent exchange; the basis of all alchemy. In accordance to this law, there is a taboo among alchemists. Human transmutation is strictly forbidden. For what could equal the value of a human soul?»_
All of alchemy is based on the principle of equivalent exchange: you can't sacrifice a flower and obtain a house. Notice how the narrator doesn't say that alchemy forbids human transmutation, only that alchemists consider it to be taboo.
Human transmutation has always been possible, perfectly in accordance with the laws that regulate any other transmutation. All previous alchemists in history (those fools) believed it to be impossible just because they didn't manage to obtain it, but the truth is: they were trying to obtain a house from a flower. For all that time, those who wanted to obtain human transmutation tried to sacrifice materials of equivalent value, both under physical and spiritual aspect, but they never succeeded simply because it wasn't an equivalent exchange. They kept underestimating the value of what they wanted to obtain or overestimating the value of what they were giving, and thus failed.
_«What could equal the value of a human soul?»_ the narrator asks. The question was there, always hidden in plain sight, at the beginning of each episode, and only Ed managed to answer to such a deep matter. The Door of Truth is the only thing we possess whose value is comparable to the one of a human life, so to obtain one you need to sacrifice the other.

Edward Elric understood what could equal the value of a human soul and, an instant before sacrificing his alchemic powers forever, became the greatest alchemist in history when he successfully obtained human transmutation.
Father has tried for 800 years to obtain Knowledge, to discover the Truth, but misunderstood it for power and made evil things to achieve it.
All Edward wanted was to obtain happiness and so Truth was revealed to him, for greater than God is the man who smiles at his last transmutation.
You wrote a lot, but you didn't answer the main question. Why is the inner gate equivalent to human life? That's the problem with all the manga and Broho fans. But they arrogantly accuse FMA 03 in a poorly thought-out story. 03 Envy answers the question about why no one can successfully complete a human transmutation. In lab 5, he says: "to return to the life of one person, you need to pay the life of another person". All Alchemists tried to return favorite people only for themselves. Alchemists did this to their beloveds lived for them. It is a sin. Because of this, Alchemists are punished by the flesh. Therefore, the only successful transmutation is Edward's Transmutation. He pays with his own life and does not know what he will get in return. He is absolutely unselfish, so he is sinless.
1) The reason the Door of Truth is equivalent to human life was not the main question, at all.
2) The Door of Truth and human life are equivalent because they're "in the same category", we might say. They're both about soul/life/magic and both could be considered the most precious thing we have.
3) You can't arbitrarily introduce sins just to explain what you want. Your hypothesis _must_ be brutally denied in accordance with Occam's razor.

1) Certainly for the author of the manga is not important, because she can't explain. But this is important because at a key moment in the series, we learn that the Gate is equal to human life. Why? They're not in the same category, of course. What kind of explanation is that? If any plot twists are only functional reason, they are useless in terms of artistic value. The problem is that human life is hard to compare to anything else that isn't human life. In other words, is it possible to compare a priceless thing with something the usability of which can be measured. I mean, the benefits of alchemy. Not to mention the fact that the entire series Alchemy was not seen as something without which it is impossible to live. This is a very effective super power, but it does not carry a sacred meaning.
(If you compare it to the end of 2003. In 2003 in the gate there is no mediator from whom you can bargain the most successful outcome for you. There is an unknown force at the gate where intentions are impossible to understand. it's more like a God, by the way.)
2)On the topic of sin in 2003. This is one of the main topics of FMA 03. I did not introduce this subject at random. The homunculus as the form that human sin took is a direct quote from Edward. Edward also concluded that it is not the homunculi that sow the fire of war and destruction engulfed the world (they are only an element of the chain) but the human heart, hungry for the philosopher's stone. Again, the depravity of the human heart. The advantage of 03 in front of the Brotherhood is that all these conclusions are an interpretation of the characters themselves, not a literal description of what is happening in this world. Homunculi are not the embodiment of sins in the literal sense, etc.
3)About Occam's razor. I won't even argue that Occam's Razor doesn't apply to the interpretation of art objects. You can argue about the credibility of the argument but not with this method, as it implies a single and more simple model of interpretation. Occam's razor is aimed at achieving efficiency, but art is not.

If you really want to see what anime is made of!, this anime is the best of the best(at least for the broader people, people rated it generally high), i think thats the best low resolution measurement for how good an anime is and not based of bias watching/reading. what is 'human transmutation?'
Here's the thing about the Philosopher's stone in Fullmetal Alchemist and Brotherhood. It's not actually breaking the laws of equivalent exchange at all. In truth, the stone is exchanging the energy of the souls trapped within it in place of matter to perform transmutation. This is why the powers of a philosopher's Stone can run out as seen by the various Humunculous deaths. The stone is using up the souls within it to regenerate them, and once it's run dry they can no longer regenerate and die. It's also seen early on in the series with That Priest's stone. it eventually runs out of souls and breaks.
So in truth, saying that is ignores the concept of equivalent exchange is incorrect. nothing is exempt from that law within the FMA universe. Even the stone must abide by it, it just offers something else in place of matter in the exchange, something that's literally worth hundreds of tons of matter. Just an interesting point.
Souls for tolls are totally OP, though. Even part of a single soul gives you tons of power! What actually seems to ignore the law of equivalent exchange is flame alchemy. It's not clear what Mustang is paying to generate that kind of power that he's able to destroy entire philosopher's stones with it.
@@mbvglider To answer your questions. what Mustang is actually transmuting is the air, using alchemy to move around the concentration of pure O2 in the air before adding a spark from his gloves. Granted I'm sure a degree of liberty is given to how much oxygen is in the air for him to transmute, the principle is sound enough.
As for him killing lust, you DO realize just how much energy is needed to create a tiny amount of mass correct? like literally a few ounces of uranium is needed to make a nuclear explosion large enough to wipe out most cities. That's a literal ton of energy coming from only a small amount of matter, so imagine the reverse, converting that energy into mass, in Lust's case replacing the flesh mustang was burning away. she's never burnt 100% to dust, but generously about half her mass is burned up with each blast, so half an adult women's weight being created from pure energy. Yeah, that's a HIGHLY inefficient way to use that energy, so it's no wonder the stone ran dry.

In regards to Mustang’s flame alchemy, he’s transmuting the air. Specifically, he’s breaking down water vapor into component oxygen and hydrogen (which is explosive), and altering the density of air streams in front of him to create temporary channels of high oxygen to let the flames travel (otherwise he’d just set himself on fire). As a result, he can actually get stronger when surrounded by water, provided he has an alternate (waterproof) source for combustion. The sparks are there because, while he could create them with alchemy, it’d be very difficult, if not impossible for him, to control 3 different and very demanding alchemical processes at once. Especially since he can just carry spark on his person and base the other two on that. The result speak for themselves, because Homuculi regenerate from a finite Philosopher’s Stone, most human means of killing don’t actually cause a large amount of damage to the body (bullets are dangerous because they sever blood vessels, unless you use hollow points). Immolation does. So, Mustang is actually a good counter against Homuculi, though there are exceptions. Wrath’s Ultimate Eye can see the airstreams, and so he can either mess them up or know how to dodge Mustang’s attacks
As an aside, Mustang learned his flam alchemy from Riza’s Father, the first Flame Alchemist. He later burned her back, which was tattooed with the secrets, in order to destroy that knowledge since itd be too dangerous in the wrong hands. Mustang’s probably the strongest human alchemist in terms of sheer destructive power. He can really do a lot of damage if he doesn’t hold himself back.
Another clue pointing to Alchemy being tied to truth and as a result God is that Scar at one point mentions that the way Ed activates his Alchemy (clapping his hands together) resembles the gesture for praying, something one does when requesting something from God. This is also something that only alchemists who have witnessed truth can do.

I always felt that Truth's ultimate test, which Edward passed and the Homunculus failed, is the ability to understand that relationships with others are everything, and personal power is meaningless. Edward gave up the thing that made him powerful and gave him position over others because, as he said "Who needs Alchemy, when I've got them?" thinking of all the people in his life who were important to him.
The Dwarf in the Flask, however, continually scoffed at the idea of community and family, while still being unable to understand why he wanted them so badly. Instead of embracing that he tried to fill the void inside him with "the power of God", and completely missed the point of being alive, which is the bonds we form with other people. At least according to the message of the series, as I've always understood it.
The price of ultimate power is everything else. Truth tells us that it isn't worth it.
But Truth has no physical form or relationships with others. How can they know that's better? Perhaps Truth is simply omniscient, but part of me wonders wonder if Truth was once once an alchemist themselves who learned this the lesson hard way, and now stands as gatekeeper to save other alchemists from falling down the same path.

Like the very first Alchemist or something, who actually achieved the ultimate power that he sought, only to discover it required sacrificing everything that made life meaningful in the first place, and now he's basically trapped in this void trying to prevent others from joining him there. I love that theory.

It´s not just that. The truth is actually a mirror. So when Ed looks at it, he is in truth looking at a reflection. The "truth" of his problems is staring right back at him. Himself. It even tells him outright at their very first meeting: "and also, you!"
What`s in his way isn´t actually some entity, but he himself and his opinions and views.
And when he beats "it", he has actually "beaten" himself, overcome his biases and deniel.

Great video. I also think that when various characters tried human transmutation and failed because, as you said, they underestimate the value of a human life/soul or overrate the value of what they’re offering as a sacrifice, the show also wants to give the message that blindly following one method of knowledge will never be enough. At the beginning, Edward thinks alchemy can do anything and he blindly believes in it, the same way those people from that country believed blindly in their religious leader and his “miracles”. That’s why he fails human transmutation: believing blindly in alchemy lead to him underestimating him the value of a human soul. The same goes for father at the end of the show. You said Truth shows him some humility and tells him he hasn’t evolved from day 1. The homunculus always believed in alchemy blindly and severely underestimated human life. Edward and Al, on the other hand, evolve as the show progresses and begin to question alchemy, and that’s what makes them different: they don’t stick to either faith or science (alchemy). And in the end, Edward understands why alchemy isn’t everything just like you said. And Winry herself shows Edward that Alchemy isn’t everything, when she tells him that it’s not necessary for each of them to give half their lives to one another, because she will give him her entire life, thus indicating that the law of equivalent exchange and alchemy doesn’t dictate this world, and that you shouldn’t stick to it to achieve absolute knowledge and reach to the realm of ideas that Platon talked about. To reach that level and know truth, you must lear something from all kinds of knowledge.
Another aspect I’ve noticed (though it might be me making things up) is that Truth doesn’t have eyes as opposed to whoever comes and sees truth. I think that means that truth belongs to the world of ideas, not to the world of appearences, where you perceive things thanks to your senses (represented by eyes).

On the idea of humility, I think your right on that point. Edward states that just because he's an alchemist or in your interpretation a "philosopher" doesn't make him anymore or less human.
Thus, he gives up his alchemy for his brother giving up power for what really matters, showing true "humility".
I think that's a beautiful thing, and maybe that's why truth congratulated Edward, because he figured out the answer. :)

I like the difference in Edward and Socrates' conclusions to similar philosophies. Socrates was told to stop philosophizing and accept his place in the world of appearances, and he chose to die. Edward chose a life with his brother and rejected the world of forms. Interesting stuff!

My favorite part of the anime is the fact that the father character was created using hoenhimes blood as a way to seek knowledge and immortality by the emperor. It's insane to think that the next 1000 years of chaos created by father was the result of the great sin that is to seek such a power. Literally humans brought the dwarf in the flask into reality and they paid for it for a 1000 years. It is like making a deal with the devil. But the beauty of the story is that humans were able to overcome such an unfathomable enemy and the 2 leading that rebellion against father was the sons of the man that gave father blood that was needed to pull him into reality. Shakespeare would be jealous of such story telling. Also we have to think that the dwarf in the flask was pulled out of the gate of truth through alchemy meaning that he is sort of the embodiment of the will and knowledge of truth. Almost like god sending a plague or a flood. Father was the punishment of the sins of the emperor of xerces but also a grand lesson which the world will never forget.
Shakespeare's works are fairly simple. In my opinion, they are nothing compared to today's animes story telling.

Hiromi arakawa, what a genius mind. I recently watched and read Silver spoon, another one of hiromi Arakawa's creations and oh boy, I didn't think a goofy anime about a city boy ending up in a farming course and reluctantly learning about what happens in a farm would affect me so much. Her writing is just so thought provoking and she tackles so many realistic themes and does so in such a subtle way that just forces you to think about it yourself rather than being told explicitly what and how things should be.

If you like dark stuff, check out Naoki Urasawa's Monster. Just finished it. It's different from Fullmetal, but its story is told powerfully and the themes range from deeply profound to deeply relatable. As you can see, just like Fullmetal Alchemist, but more mature.
I also recommend 86 (or Eighty-Six). It's a war drama that has powerful storytelling and great animation. It also has cosmic horror and post-apocalyptic elements.
God, I love Hiromu Arakawa. Such a brilliant person. And I love the fact that after doing a series as profound and shonen-y as Fullmetal Alchemist, she decided to do something more lighthearted and wrote a farming manga instead. It’s called Silver Spoon and even if you’re not into slice of life I highly recommend it! Arakawa’s storytelling is just the best

This video got me thinking, and I think I've made some pretty cool connections. One important point made by the series that wasn't mentioned here: "All is One, and One is All." This is the concept Ed and Al are tasked by their teacher to think about on the island as kids. Ed's final conclusion is that all things are connected even though they seem different, that they are just an insignificant piece connected to a much greater whole, and that the same energy flows through everything in the universe - which parallels Plato's idea of Anima mundi. This universal truth is so important for young alchemists to learn because alchemy is shown throughout the series to be the understanding of something's composition, its deconstruction, and then its reconstruction in a new form. Understanding that all matter is made of the same manipulable and rearrangeable structures is crucial to alchemy, which is why Ed can destroy Greed's carbon armour and more importantly, why Scar can only use his powers to deconstruct - because his knowledge of reconstruction is incomplete. Furthermore, alchemists use their understanding of Plato's Anima mundi (universal world energy) to draw power for their transmutations.
The idea of philosopher's stones easing alchemists' access to (aka understanding of) their gate of truth makes sense if the truth they access is the interconnection of everything. After peering through the gate, alchemists visit the World of Forms and see the Truth (the concept of "All is One, and One is All" in action) and bring it back with them, so when they return they don't need a transmutation circle to help them draw from the realm of forms any longer. When Ed sacrifices his gate (which bears the image of the Tree of Life, representing the world) he gives up his ability to understand that complex interconnection and loses his access to the power that runs through everything. In doing so, he accepts his place as an insignificant piece in the whole, and his humility about his position as "only a human" is the answer Truth was looking for. Alchemy is all about reaching beyond the human's place in the universe to borrow the power that doesn't naturally belong to them (taking from the world of forms), but the ultimate lesson of FMAB is that it is better to accept our place in the world than to try and reach for the power of God like Father does. And because All is One and One is All, accepting your place in the whole means becoming a part of it.
I like your insight in a lot of this! I will say that I think the Tree of Life on the Gateway is actually intended to imply that the Gateway leads to Heaven (or the World of Forms in Plato-ese) or in other words, the 'realm' or perspective of God.
Also, I'm not sure that the intent of the story is to make a generalized message about the 'place' of humankind and how we should stick to it. There is that undertone, but looking a little deeper into that scene where Ed gives up his gateway, I see that his motive in doing so is important. It's not that he's accepting his place, meekly. The Truth asks if he can really do away with the power of alchemy...and this gives him pause. Then he remembers how many times over the course of these events he has relied not on alchemy, but on other people...his friends and allies. His willingness to give away the Gateway represents, I think, not necessarily a generalized statement on all of humanity, but a very personal element of his journey through life. The Truth congratulates him on getting his OWN 'right answer.' Because, the Truth, in that place, is himself. A personalized Truth, seeking a personalized answer. Ed made a decision about what was more important: What sacrifice to make. He made it understanding the consequences, and accepted them. He, in other words, did exactly what he did NOT do as a child, trying to resurrect his mother. Acted rashly, ignoring warnings, making sacrifices he didn't understand for a goal he couldn't achieve.
Thus it was the right answer.

1. Scar can reconstruct with his left arm. His right arm is used for destruction. It isn't as if he knows how to do either, he's just using the designs his brother created.
2. Alchemists draw their power from tectonic plate elastic rebounds, not from universal world energy / life energy / whatever you wanna call it.
Second paragraph makes a lot of sense and is really cool, love the idea about how they don't need to use a circle. And it's like in the original FMA when Ed said "Those who reach for the sun get burnt." or something along those lines, saying that if you try to take the power of God you'll receive the consequences.

FMAB is one of my favorite anime in my life. It tells you a life lesson. Knowing that we strive to become like Gods image, we lose ourselves and try to do things we think that is how we achieve God; which in this case, Edward thought alchemy and science was the base of trying to bring his mother back to life and thought he can do anything with it and said screw the truth(he thought that he was God himself), and at the end, he knew that wasn’t the case at all and gave that up and he got restored that was taking from him and lived a happy life afterwards. The lesson I really get from this anime tho(and..sometimes I forget this) is that we need to start living in our integrity and humility. Cuz that’s what God wants us to do. When we do that we start seeing what our purpose is in our lives; which shows that it’s his him working in us. We shouldn’t do things to reach God and to become like him. Instead, we should do things that make us who we are and to find the truth within our spirit and being.
Ngl tho...when I was watching this anime.. I thought the door of truth was like the judgement of God in a way. When we knew we were playing him and not being honest/finding the truth, the gates opened and took you(which I thought was hell/darkness) and you are there for eternity. I got to your video because it was in my recommended list. Philosophy is one of my favorite subjects, I paused the video at 1:30 when you asked the "how did I get here" question and have since watched FMA & FMA brotherhood since you made it sound so good. I had actually never heard of those Anime(s) before. I really liked them, I was not expecting those shows to be as good as they were. Tech Minute I had a somewhat similar experience, but I watched the show on Drawfee where there did a FMA video. And when I searched other videos, the title of this video sounded interesting to me.
The whole idea of 'One is all, all is one' felt very familiar to me ever since I started the show. The way 'truth' speaks also was very familiar.
I've been taught this idea since I was a child.
One of the schools of Hinduism which teaches the 'Advaita vedanta' gave these 4 'Mahavakyas' (4 great sayings)

Even the way Izumi trains Ed & Al is similar to the stories of 'Guru' (teacher) & 'Shishya' (student).
The student in search of truth for his spiritual advancement goes to the guru where he is given a few sentences to ponder upon and understand to arrive at a conclusion.

What you said about The Truth's domain being a white void due to differing from the world of appearances was really interesting. I think it also plays well into the concept of Mustang's blindless; since he was blind to the world of appearances, he was able to see truth, the world of forms.
There's also a point to be made with the light of eclipse, and how Bradley saw it before he died. Before he died, he came to a conclusion that brought him peace, something contradictory to his own existence. As one of Father's eyes, I believe he saw the truth, hence why he was able to die happy. It's similar to the concept of "blinding light". The Truth is blind; we see that both figuratively (people see the world of forms when they lose sight of the world of appearances) and literally (The Truth has no eyes).

Maybe. But I don’t think Mustang’s loss of sight is primarily for that reason. It could be one if the reasons but not the primary reason.
Let me clarify what I mean. Every time an alchemist committed the taboo, Truth took something that was in a way, ironic m/equivalent to their life or intent.
Izumi wanted to bring back her child, she lost the ability to bear child by Truth taking her organs.
Ed wanted to walk by his mother again, he lost his leg, thus impairing his ability to walk at all and taking his ability to stand without support.
And he lost the arm he reached out for his brother’s soul with.
Alphonse wanted to feel the warmth of their mother’s hug, he lost his body and consecutively the ability to feel anything.
Mustang had a vision for his country once he became fuhrer. I’m pretty sure he even specifically refers to it as a vision at some point. But basically, the irony in his sacrifice was that he would never get to see his “vision”. He could reform his country but he’d never see it. The loss of vision is an irony and somewhat a pun here imo.
And irony is a strong theme of fma. It’s present in all the homunculi deaths too, including father, or even Hohenheim.
All the homunculi died in a way that contradicts or embodies their sins. Wrath died peacefully, pride was reduced to a human and humbled, gluttony was devoured, Sloth died from exhaustion, Envy killed himself thus taking the only thing that was his own, Lust was burned to death by a womanizer (Lust is usually characterized by fire), and Greed died for someone else.
Father learned nothing in his long life, that’s his irony and Hohenheim dies just as his life is resolved and he could return to his family b

He just wanted to seek true arguments and knowledge. If he is an "insufferable pompous" he didn't write dialogs, he could wrote trials. Most of the Ancient Greek philosophers seem to be arrogant, because of their words, usually, beyond our imagination.
The reason why this anime is so "feels good" is because it feels like a whole family who is developing together. Almost every character has a spot and time to shine. It shows how important even a mutated grunt from the bad guys could become good guys. This show has redemption. It has love. Philosophical thoughts that challenges the people who like that sort of thing. And to kick it all off it has a kickass soundtrack EVERY, FUCKING, SEASON. the whole anime feels like a tight knit community. A whole family. I even feel empathy for the guys who are supposed to be "bad" like Greed, Pride, Wrath, Envy. And heck even gluttony was slowly winning me over as he had to work with his enemy (Alphonse) to retrieve both Envy and Edward back from hell. It shows these people who have no souls, or rather should I say have countless souls, are even capable of helping. It all happened because of a dwarf in a flask who has no life purpose and aimlessly pondering what life is about. He took his hate and confusion to the extreme because he didn't have guidance. Whereas both main characters Edward and Alphonse had everything except their father. The dwarf in the flask was essentially the polar opposite of both ed and al. The dwarf in the flask sought power for himself whereas as and al always did it for others who deserve it. This show had it all. I'm so happy for how happy both brothers could be in the end. To kick it off the fight scenes were spectacular too. It was too shonen like blowing planets up however it had cool fight scenes. Each fight scene felt like it had some weight behind it. Everybody was fighting for their beliefs. The Prince and Princess from China had to fight for peace and to relinquish poverty from their homeland. I loved the ninja girl who always followed the Prince. She is so wifey material. She gave up her arm for her Prince. ;(

I'm just going to leave my understanding of all of this here.
Plato's philosophies were essentially teachings on how to raise yourself above the level of "human" like yourself and everyone around you, which was done by obtaining knowledge not capable of being learned and understood by mere humans, known as Truth. But, ultimately, he found that the true way to raise yourself above humanity was coming to terms with, accepting, and striving to be exactly what you are; a human.
This was clearly reflected in FMAB as this narration so eloquently and expertly laid out for us all. Everything in Truth's "realm", Plato's idea of the World of Forms, was nothing, or at least seemingly so, because none of it could be truly understood by a mere human. The only things seen in that realm are whatever the human who enters it brings with them, i.e, themselves, which is shown in a blank reflection of what is inclined to be believed as themselves, since it takes the pose of them from whenever they entered, which was taken a step further, cementing this idea, when Truth wore Edward's arm and leg and Alphonse's full body. Then, of course, the Gate was shown, because that was the human bringing forth their idea of being able to reach this realm and surpass humanity, despite it not being possible in the way that they imagine. Otherwise, the realm is seen as blank, because not only is the human incapable of understanding anything within it, they are just entirely not meant to because they are human.
Furthermore, when Edward sacrifices his Gate to get Alphonse back, Truth says that is the "right answer", since he is giving up his idea that he can surpass humanity by reaching this unknown realm, and this realisation is not only valuable enough to bring a human back to life, but it's so valuable that the one who does realise it has actually surpassed humanity by giving up the idea that surpassing humanity would even be possible.
The catch is, when I said "has actually surpassed humanity" just then, I did not mean that the person who came to the realisation had become God or reached Truth, because that is simply incapable for a human. No, what I meant is that this idea of surpassing humanity is nothing like what philosophers always teach about; it's exactly the opposite in fact. Surpassing humanity, in the only way possible for a human, is to realise that you cannot surpass humanity in any physical, mental, or spiritual way, rather, it can only be done by realising that it is not at all possible to become more than human if you are a human. What this realisation does is it makes the one who realised strive to make the most of themselves and what they are, a human, and that is the true and only way to go beyond humanity; realising that you are human and nothing can change that.
Alright, that's enough thought for... what's today, Thursday? We'll go with 2040 at least. I'm done here.

I have read an interview of Hiromu Arakawa.She said that she wanted to create a story based on philosopher stone and started research.Research led her to the person named Theophrastus Bombastus Van Hohenheim, known alchemist.What is depicted on the gate is nothing more than a creation of this alchemist called "Tree Of Life" and it is a symbol for everything including ""god" on top.The reason why you made a connection between Plato and FMA is easy for me to determine of, Hohenheim like all alchemist based his research on teachings of Aristotle who was a direct student of Plato. For a long time, I have always pondered at what Truth meant when he spoke to the dwarf in the flask, (in the end) and I haven’t come up with anything closer to this video nor your response. Jorge Barrios they made the point that Truth told the Dwarf in the Flask that it should have believed in itself more. And at the end Dwarf in the Flask was asking "What should i have done then" Truth replied he should have known what answer was coming. Like Galiel said, trying to take apart all of "himself" and put the different aspects such as Pride, Wrath, Greed and Envy away from him was the mistake.
I also think of Hohenheim's reaction at the end, being so shocked by the Dwarf in the Flask, and his flashback to him saying "You gave me your blood didn't you" that is, the Dwarf's ambitions were probably part of his. Also when the Dwarf said he didn't really want much, just to be free of that flask. I think though it also showed the arrogance that people (or things?) can get when they have or try to have complete power. Just like when people tried to bring humans back from the dead they got a punishment. To me it kind of shows in a sense that people (or things?) need containers like that Dwarf in the flask, otherwise they just get greedy if they can not control it and bring about ruin.
I always saw the dwarf in the flask as being what Hohenheim desired most when the homunculus was formed, to be free. Father wanted to be free from the shackles of his sins, from God, and from the very laws of alchemy. Yet his means always tied him to others, there was little originality as his forms were imitations of truth or Hohenheim or Edward, his downfalls were the same as those he mocked and his power relied on the souls of others. In the end he was so absorbed by his own alchemy he talked to the gate rather than his truth till that truth made itself known. Deep down father knew the answer but chose wrong because his god was wrong he never grew or created. He wasn't free he was absorbed by alchemy and truth where as Edward realized his gate wasn't what taught him what made him learn he exchanged his alchemy and truth said he was correct he can take it all. But that's my opinion I didn't do research
I find it more interesting to look at who "Father"/"The Dwarf in the Flask" is.
Every other homonculus represents their own unique sin, born from him. Hence the name.We can, therefore, assume that his grasping for power isn't greed or envy but something entirely different. A symptom of his own flawed character.What this is becomes apparent late on in Brotherhood.
"Father" lusts for power not out of a desire to be greater than others but out of a desire to be greater than himself. To escape his own, self-perceived, insignificance.
In some biblical settings, this "Despair" is seen as the greatest of all sins. As a rejection of god's plan that, at its most extreme, becomes suicide.
That's pretty messed up, IMO, since it explicitly shames those who are struggling most, but it does fit with the character and his rejection of everything that made him human.
Plus, there are definite parallels between his loss of emotion as he creates homonculi and the emotional distancing of depression.

Anime tends to have such interesting takes on God/Gods compared to Western shows because:
A) Japan itself has rather interesting/flexible views of God/Gods (mainly the idea that Gods exist in all things). They don't strictly stick to the straightforward "all-powerful, all-knowing, benevolent" view that a lot of religions do.
B) People in Japan don't treat religion as such a tabboo subject, at least nowhere near as much as in Western countries. Japan generally sees religious lore as just any other kind of mythos that concepts and themes can be pulled from, so it's no big deal to have an animated, all-ages show features characters that are essentially Gods, or use religious terms/names. Whereas in the West people find it 'inappropriate' and will even go so far as to censor or outright ban games that have religious tones or subtext (like Xenosaga Episode I, which was censored in America and never released at all in Europe).
In short, Japan sees religious ideas as something to tinker and be creative with, where most other cultures just feel uncomfortable with the idea or flat-out find it offensive.

I disagree with Mustang`s reason for why he lost his vision in FMA brotherhood. I think that he lost his sight as consequence of how he dealt with envy. Mustang let hate blur his vision of reality and burnt envy`s eyes thus resulting in Mustang losing his eyesight.

Ed lost his leg when he went through the gate of truth, because he couldn't go after his brother in time to save him. Al lost his entire being because he couldn't see what he could be without this end goal. Izumi lost her organs because of her organs being unable to sustain her baby. Hoenheim lost his soul by being directly involved (in his eyes) in the killing of so many innocents. And so, Mustang lost his sight because of his blinding anger towards Envy.

You're somewhat right about each sacrifice having their own struggles in which were manifested from the Gateway of Truth, but you kind of have a refracted way. I'm just going to quote Father (Though it's English dub so it might be a bit misinterpreted).
"The Truth can be such a cruel thing. The two brothers (Edward and Alphonse) who wanted to feel their Mothers warmth once more. Their attempt to bring the dead back to life cause one of them the leg in which he stood, as well as the only family he had left. The other one lost his entire body to have it replaced by a suit of armor that could feel nothing. The woman that sought to bring back her only baby was given the body that would never again bear children. And then, the man that looked to change the nation had his eyesight taken from him, and now he can no longer see his future. Humans who would dare to play God must pay a steep price for their arrogance. That is the way of the universe. The natural order imposed by the very thing you claim to worship. That is Truth." - Dwarf in the Flask, Homunculus, Father.
But uh, after that Edward was like NO! So *shrug*. Mustangs blurred reality from vengeance and wanting to kill Envy seems like a coincidence, but that surely still correlates to him wanting to change the nation and being incapable of seeing his future. He couldn't see that killing Envy would sink him to Envys level and potentially change him for the worse. It's kind of like a Batman vs Joker situation, where Joker WANTS Batman to kill him because then he would win. Making Batman sink to the Jokers level, becoming a murderer (Though Mustang has already killed plenty of people). It's kind of also a mix of "The bigger picture" ordeal. I just feel that if Mustang were to kill Envy, there would be a part of him that's different, but I'm not sure what. Luckily his allies were there to calm him down and empathize with Envy a bit, even forgiving him to a point (I'm probably stretching it). Envys entire character is just... he's become a favorite of mine. Anyways this is mostly opinion so uh... thanks for reading lol.

As Friedrick Nietzsche said "Philosophy is this tyrannical impulse itself, the most spiritual Will to Power, the will to "creation of the world," the will to the causa prima." Perhaps we cannot stay away from the truth as humans whether conscious or not are driven by a will to power. But in this search of truth in the world of forms we forget that we are also human and also live in or by the world of appearance. Perhaps in the path to truth or God both worlds of appearance and forms are of equal values. Perhaps we just live in a world of contradictions where both sides of the coin are heads and tails at the same time with no clear truth. Perhaps it is humanity quest to never stop questioning ;or maybe accept some things as it is. Perhaps just, maybe perhaps..... we may never find truth.

They grow their unddrstanding of reality, and with it their ability to predict and manipulate it.
Understanding is quiet literally the key to our survival. Ws, and by extension ANY civilistaion will be fundamentally driven to deepen their understanding, so long as their biological origin remains untampered with.

Even if she didn't take inspiration from Plato, alchemy itself is based on Plato's theory of form. The philosopher stone was thought to be able to change metal to gold. The philosopher stone is the Anima Mundi.
Well really the philosopher's stone as the original concept as I understand it could turn into anything, not just gold.
deamongimli hence the name philosopher stone, literal meaning for the interpretation of the one with the stone. Meaning each character is just delving deep into there own dreams and soul intention. Show is very deep metaphorically imo as well as blood being the main sacrifice.

You know, the ironic thing is that people started huge arguments about the updated versions of FMA and DBZ saying how they were closer to the manga with less fillers.
I can get that people were angry how they grew up with the 2003 FMA and thought FMAB was an abomination. I think the same way except with DBZ and DBZ Kai.
I chose the watch FMAB cause I thought it was smarter to go along with the story closer to the manga while I don’t really want to watch Kai even *if* it is closer to the manga with less filler.
There are differences though, like FMA finished before the manga was done and DBZ made fillers so they could finish with the manga.
Honestly I respect FMAB more for its adaption and seriousness about being a “dog of the military” and I respect and prefer DBZ for its awesome music and more common humor ^^

Dude I love this! This is really high quality, and about like the best subject ever.
I think it was this scene from Full Metal Alchemist that influenced me to do a continual thought experiment on seeing how well the terms truth, god, and the universe can be interchanged in everyday speech (i.e. reading scientific literature facts as "god," and religious texts replacing the lord with "truth" or "the universe"). What's interesting is that the more I thought about this whether it's through an atheistic or religious lens, there are very interesting parallels that remain true. Throughout our lives, we find that our hubris and pride can only take us so far. Neither god, the truth, nor the universe tend to be what we want them to be. Nothing lasts forever, we aren't invincible, and we can't control many things at all. Whether it's god, the truth, or the universe, it's one of those things that make us realize at some point in our lives of the human condition that we all suffer and continually feel the temptation to claw our way to something that would satisfy and pacify our suffering. With the correct attitude, one may find acceptance and humility, which is where true growth starts.
So yeah, the truth can be cruel, the universe can be cold and random, and one may start to understand the origins of the wrathful nature of the monotheistic god from the old testament. From here, it's also very interesting that we can not only see the parallels from the books of Ecclesiastes and Job in the bible, but also some core tenants of Buddhism and the concept of Brahman in Hinduism. Watching this video again, I had no idea that there were so many parallels to Plato's philosophy too.

just my opinion,
truth is simply the representation of "self" since real world alchemy is just that, a journey of selfdiscovery pseudo-science concerning metals. when an alchemist does transmutation he may just be praying to the "artisan god", that big eyed thing that does the actual transformation of materials. like when ling stated that when ed transmutes its reminiscent of a man in prayer. truth may simply be a middleman or a receptionist/guide to "god"

Very interesting. I always viewed truths final talks in the series to be his lesson. Father removed his vices and coveted the external, never seeking to truly better himself but only make himself “less bad”. He physically removed parts of himself rather than mastering or overcoming them. Ed however has had a long journey. It’s a fraction the length of fathers, but he grew and developed so much more. When I look at father in the flask and at the end of the series, there’s ultimately not that much difference. I’m not sure if the lesson to be taught is humility or to accept ones place in the universe, but I think that a big part is that you cannot better yourself without acknowledging your flaws and progressing from there.
In all honesty I prefer your interpretation. It’s a much more well read version with more classical routes, which would fit the series better I think
