I have been searching videos forever to find a painting teacher. Not necessarily Chinese style, just watercolor. You are the ONLY one I can connect with. I am so excited and can't wait to get started.

Ms. Rae, on what type of paper was this demo done, and is there an online supplier or national art store chain where it can be reliably found/purchased?

    • @NanRae

Ronn this demonstration was done on Double Shuen paper. Regular stores do not carry this but you can always order it from my website www.nanrae.com .... click on supplies. Many thanks for your interest! Nan

This is a wonderful tutorial Nan Rae💞. I've spent a lot of time between chores today trying to create the brush stroke you're demonstrating so well here, with various brushes. For the life of me I cannot master getting the top part of the stoke diluted and frilly as you do. I have some smaller natural hair bamboo brushes but I don't think they are of great quality - more like a lovely boxed souvenir a tourist to China may have bought back from a trip. Is creating the diluted tip of the petal a characteristic of a genuine Chinese orchid and bamboo brush?
I am a newbie to art and was lucky enough to purchase at a great price some lovely professional, natural haired brushes but as beautiful as they are, I can't get the effect I'm asking about, out of them. Naturally I tried practicing on different types of paper. I love the pale frilly edge effect on the top edge of your strokes and I can see how useful it is when painting a peony.
I've enjoyed viewing many of your videos since yesterday - food for the soul. Again, thank you for sharing 💞💞

Thank you so very much! I am delighted that you are on this wonderful journey of Brush painting. I know it will give you great joy and satisfaction in the years to come.
From my experience the brush gift sets from China are usually although beautiful are of lower quality. The reason being is that the outside of the brush would have quality hairs but the inner hairs would be of lesser grade. I really would suggest you get a Large Orchid Bamboo brush. It’s an all purpose brush. I use it in almost all the subjects that I paint. I think that might solve your dilemma. Also, if you keep the color that you pick up just at the tip of the brush, I think you’ll get a much better effect. I have a video on color blending which might helpful to you ua-cam.com/video/WYi0J28hlFM/v-deo.html

@@NanRae Thank you so much for your reply and advice, Nan, it's very much appreciated😃 Yes, I thought that might be the case with the bamboo brushes I have. In playing around today, I'm kind of getting the effect I'm after from a Silver Brush black velvet brush, but a quality orchid bamboo brush has been added to my want list. Have a lovely day Nan🥰
