Nan, is this double Xuan (jade plate I believe it was called when I got it?). I attempted a wash on some semi-raw Xuan last month..Used far too much water/ink…(I don’t think the salt helped 🤷🏼♀️😂) My best friend is a professional western artist and we’ve been trading off materials and basic lessons; she has even attended 3-4 classes with me! After doing some big washes on very thick western paper; I wanted to experiment and see if I could use the technique on my Xuan. It worked better on some cheaper mulberry Xuan..but the fibers just didn’t look right in a dark night sky, and like yours, it bled quite a bit into my moon. After flattening it beneath books for a few days..it wasn’t too bad and I may still try and see if I can salvage it. My daughter, born in ‘87, loved the ink bunny in the moon and has asked me to make more rabbit paintings for next year (her 本命年) In the meantime, I’m going to go try this on my double Xuan. My friend Liz just ordered more because she feels it’s closest to her Western paper. My biggest issue going between the 2 styles this past year, (besides the brushes..which I gave up on. After 6 years of learning calligraphy and painting with my Chinese brushes; I just can’t get used to western brushes); has been water control…AND using 10+ strokes on one flower petal I can do in 1-2 strokes with my brushes, loaded with 2-4 colors or values. Gongbi, I understand takes more strokes, and I use outline sketches. But I prefer freehand, at least right now. As I told my primary Chinese tutor who does breathtaking, detailed Gongbi paintings; if I can get my eye surgery and get some of my vision back..THEN I’ll attempt more Gongbi paintings. Thank you for your valuable and generous online lessons! (Liz watches too! 😁). Time to go play!
Ms. Rae, as a beginner I have watched and learned from many of your videos. It would be helpful if you would describe the paint, i.e., is it all ink, or something else. It would also be helpful if you would describe the paper. I understand there are many types, some better for washes etc. Thank you for sharing you skill with us.
Wonderful tutorial Nan. May I ask what paper you used? I just tried this with Xuan paper and I think it is far to delicate and the result isn't that great.
Lose the music loop. It's unnecessary and very distracting. I'm sure you know this, but turning off the video and letting the paper dry, then resuming the lesson would eliminate the wrinkling & bleeding. My 2 cents :)
Excellent as always!!!
Thank you for making these videos! I love you’re painting and you explain so well practical hints and the reasons behind them! Thank you
Beautiful and amazing she paints this in a WHITE blouse.
Thank you!
Excellent!!!!!
Thank you for your tutorials
My pleasure!
Thank you. Very good demonstration . Wish to have closed up view when you paint the snow.
I have learned alot from you. You have a way of making it all come together. I feel as if I can do something presentable. Thank you so much!
Thank you! It's my pleasure!

And such a relaxing, lovely music choice as well.

Dear Nan: I have been through your website. In supplies I did not see the colors you use. Are they watercolors? thanks for your reply.
Yes these are watercolors. I used Sennelier's Cobalt Blue and Neutral tint for this demo.

I use Xuan paper. The touch on the paper is always very light.
Thank you for the quick response! I'll try again with a lighter touch. Love your work and your tutorials. Thank you for uploading these
My pleasure! Thank you!
I surely love your instruction. Give me a heads up for any internet lessons you do.
Can you demonstrate using Chinese brush on traditional watercolor paper please?
I am using Chinese Brushes and using Xuan paper.
I like that bleed. But maybe use a heavier grade of paper?
