This man has an absolutely brilliant perspective on cameras and photography. It's really refreshing to hear somebody encourage others not to fall into the same argument of more great is better. Just love what you got and learn to make the best of it. That makes photography fun and creative.

I have a D7200. Great camera and has a good dynamic range. Lovely camera for landscape photography.
I have actually found myself downgrading. I had a FF but went down to APS-C because I wanted something lighter. Now I mostly use a mirrorless micro four thirds, which I really enjoy.
Having a full on professional camera and all the expensive gear does not make you a better photographer. I think it was Mike Browne that said: "Cameras don't take photos, people do." That is so true. I have seen some terrible photos taken using a FF expensive pro camera and some amazing photos taken with a smartphone.

I shot with a D3100 and kit lenses for 7 years! I loved it because it made me focus on how to do it. Recently upgraded to D500. I find it’s balanced for landscapes and wildlife. Does decent portraits as well.
I like that you shoot with a DX and still get amazing photos! Good model for beginners.

Henry, I to have a D7200 and love it. Photography is not the equipment, but the person behind the gear. Started with various film cameras years ago and used everything up to an 8x10 view camera. Love the fact I can buy decent gear at an affordable price. Also have two D80's and a D5500. Just got the second D80 for $100 US, which only has 2k shutter count.
Like your attitude about going out and taking in the great outdoors and study things in your mind. Keep up the good work!

I like the message. You can go back in time and find photographers who made the most amazing photos with far worse cameraes than some of the mid-quality cameraes you can now buy for cheap money. I have seen fantastic photos made with homemade cameraes obscura, only made out of a box of cardboard and the lens made of a piece of copper in which a hole was drilled. Photo is about being in the right place in the right time. It is about enthusiasm and being willing to do different kinds of experiments, and not be afraid sometimes to fail. Keep up the good work Henry.

Great video Henry. I've got the d7200 and absolutely love it. I recently also purchased a d750 for shooting weddings as I wanted to treat myself rather than buying a second d7200. The great thing about crop sensor is cheap lenses and I love cheap lenses.

I have the D7200 for 3 years now. I was blown away by it when I bought it. Even now, I’m still impressed by it’s capabilities.
I’ve been taking photographs for years. But I’m an amateur. And I have other interests (music). I can’t really justify spending more on gear. The D7200 can do pretty much anything. Blowing thousands on a full frame body and lenses so I can proudly tell other photographers I have the “right” equipment would be pretty pathetic. I’ve seen lots of people with the best and latest gear who haven’t an eye in their head.
Spend your money on diesel and a pair of hiking boots instead 👍

I picked up a reconditioned d7100 years ago and it does everything I could ask. It's got a good iso range, a 24MP sensor, and is compatible with thousands of lenses. There are a lot of very good crop sensor lenses out there that are a real bargain - 50mm f1.8 anyone (I bought that for $125 brand new). You can also use FX lenses as well so the choice is almost limitless.
If you have a DX format camera with a few lkenses and you go over to FX, those lenses won't be of much use to you. I can't see any reason for me to change formats. you may but think about it before jumping formats.

I don’t use full 42mp i just stick with 25mp, picture a lovely and sharp plus you can do stacking

@@martinlewis1015 That's awesome! The D5500 definitely has some limitations when it comes to usability, but I can't resist its image quality and that's why I still have it as a second body.
I was considering buying a full frame camera as well, but after using the D7200 for some months, I don't think I need one. The D7200 has amazing image quality and the low light performance surprisingly matches that of the Canon 5D Mark IV and the Nikon D810 (I tested it against both) so that's good enough for me.
The D850 seems like an amazing camera! I'm sure you're creating amazing photos with it. What kind of photography do you do?

On both D5500 and D850 i have upgraded the view finder with a higher + so don’t need glasses, on the D850 it’s bigger viewer and optics are really clear. I have gone from using A or S and now using M mode as you can see bar and adjust on the fly. Going from film to using a DSLR for the first time in 2010, I chose a heavily used EOS-1 Ds which was Canon's FIRST full frame camera ever. I chose this because I really enjoyed ultra wide angles and I wanted a body that could handle my lenses as they were. It was a great body, but if you're just starting out, a full frame can give you so little depth of field that you can easily become frustrated. I eventually got used to it and learned how to produce better images. Last year (and two full frame bodies later) I picked up an EOS 90D and I'm really glad I did. When you need a depth of field boost, a crop sensor can give you one. If you have your lens set at f/5.6, your DoF will be about equal to f/9 on a full frame, and since your aperture is wider, you're able to shoot with a higher shutter speed/lower ISO and get the same effect! And, there's less diffraction from being stopped down! So yes, there's some VERY professional reasons to go for a crop sensor. Full frame is great, but absolutely, crop does have advantages!

Only beginning but quickly came to the opinion I don't need a full frame. Glad to see I am not alone. Have a nikon d3500 which I will upgrade in a year or two with another crop sensor. Any recommendations obviously want to stay with nikon as I have 3 lenses I don't want to change. Would the D7200 be my next step?

Great content and a lot of sense talked here. I went from D70 > D90> D5500. At times I've contemplated moving to a D7200, but can't justify it because the D5500 does great and I've not exceeded its capabilities. I don't get out too often, so practice in the back garden regularly with improving my abilities at focus stacking, panos etc. Total familiarity with one's camera and lenses pays off when later spending time and money visiting good locations.

    • @osasenoma-owens5072
      @osasenoma-owens5072 5 років тому

I would highly recommend the D7200 if you can afford it at the moment! I use both the D7200 and the D5500. The sensors in both cameras are different so the color science is slightly different on the D7200 (for the better as it looks more like Canon) and the sensor in the D7200 performs noticeably better at high ISO settings, so you'll be able to shoot at ISO 12800 without much worry!
If you usually keep your ISO low (100-800) and you mostly use your D5500 on a tripod, then there's absolutely no need to buy the D7200, however.

There are many reasons I chose to stay APSC, I didn't need to buy new expensive lenses, all my glass fits. It's nice to have a channel on which the photographer is using gear that we casual hobbyists can reasonably justify purchasing. Like you, I can afford a D850 but I don't need it and can't justify that expense or, especially, the expense of the must-have lenses that go with it. I have gone from D70 to D7000 to now D7200, keeping me somewhat up-to-date with innovation, and have been equally happy with each. I also watch those D850 landscape channels but I prefer yours because I can more identify with what you're doing and how you're doing it. Now I just need your eye for composition, one thing money can't buy!

Never had problems with low-light with the full frame but the 600D is still used for holidays and outings whilst the bulkier heavier Canon 6D is usually just reserved for model shoots.

There are some other well known UA-cam photographers who shoot crop sensor and they all say the same - the gear doesn't make the photographer, it's what's sat behind it. I have an investment in five DX lenses that would be hard to replace. In the US the price for a body has dropped to under $700. It might be time to pick up another body, as I like to switch from ultra wide angle to telephoto. Also, when I am in a wooded area, I often switch to a macro lens for woodland flowers, etc. Keep up the great vlogs, Henry!

It's personal preference really there are advantages to both apsc gives you a 1.5x boost to the focal length of the lense mounted onto it. Full frame shows more of the scene and has high megapixel sensors. But you can't go wrong with apsc because if you have a good lens attached you can get very good results

I found this interesting. I wish I had an audience to tell how I ended up with full frame. I bet the answer would surprise many. In short, I was on a dead, poorly supported system (Sony A mount) so had to switch systems, made a list of things I wanted in my camera and then searched for my next system. Sony full frame came out on top of features and price so a new and very heavily discounted A7ii is my new camera for 2021. That and some used lenses. By fluke it was considerably less expensive (body and lenses) than any APS-C options that fit my list. We’re in the middle of a transition in camera tech to mirror less, so either hold on to what works or change systems.

Spot on Henty, for too long I was getting hung up on full frame but eventually decided to get real and add another prime lens to my kit, so I now have 3 primes and saving for a 4th to go with my wee Sony 6000, i loved my kit when i got it and since i got away from the mindset of thinking i needed better i am loving it even more now, TBH once i get my lenses sorted out i don't think i will ever go FF. i take photos for fun and stressing about gear takes the fun out of it. liked your image and with a wee bit of light it would be even better, that's the beauty of shooting local, you can revisit.

Great video Henry, I have the D7200 and I love it. From the dual card slots and control wheels to where the buttons are positioned for fast changing of settings. If I was a professional I might be inclined to look at full frame and better glass but as an enthusiastic amateur the cost wouldn't justify the spend.

I have a D7100 ,great camera also. But in landscape and long exposure ,in low light ,the amount of detail that you can extract from a FX camera ,like a D810 or D850 in the shadows ir far greater that on a crop sensor ,even the d500.Not to mention the dinamic range of the D810 and the d850.Landscape photography ,his the type of photography that probably take the more advantage of a FX sensor .Do i need a D850 to makes photos ? No i don´t .But in some situations ,would be very welcome

I started getting paid for my photos and working as a wedding and event photographer in 1978 I’ve also gone through all of the changing gear over the years
i have currently the D7200 and the D750
    I’m completely happy with both
I’m finding I use my D7200 much of the time
    Over the D750
I’m a dual body shooter with deferent lenses on the bodies
My editing is very minor for either camera body I can easily afford a D810 however I’ve found it’s limitations were not going to be okay for me
I’m a event and wedding photographer
My primary photography is as a portrait shooter indoors and outdoors
With high speed sync and off camera flash
In closing in 2019 i have seen nothing that made me feel my two camera bodies were not going to do exactly what I needed and more if I required them to
Great video and I’m interested in how you envision your photography
It’s not what I do however
I’m completely impressed with your skills.

I'm sorry, I'm not good at English. I currently have two cameras, Nikon D5500 and D7500. With the D5500 I took photographs that have been awarded in international competitions such as IPA, sharing the list with the photographers I consider teachers, the D7500 is recent and I have some images taken and I think I can take advantage of it in night photography. But I think the main thing is to study, read, visit museums, plastic artists, painters, sculptors, reading literature also helps to awaken the imagination, cinema, follow the work of other photographers who do other things and see what I can learn. Try to have as much visual culture as possible, that is something that helps growth. There are many photographers who invest in an FX body and then, in front of the lens, place the cheapest filters on the market or buy a cheap tripod.

Nice video Henry and I totally agree. I think we all suffer from GAS at some stage in our journey. Like you i have a D7200 and can confirm it is an extremely versatile camera and great value for money, I love it, but have found myself falling into the same trap. I work in the city so found that I wasn’t able to invest enough time for landscape so have invested in a small Olympus OMD5 as a second camera to keep with me at all times in the city and am really enjoying some street photography to try an improve my composition skills 😃

I'm currently using a D7000. Good camera but I would love a flippy screen as often shoot low down. That means either a D7500 or a D500. D7500 only has 1 memory card (bad) &the cost of a D500 is similar to a full frame. I feel like Nikon has set a trap for me to get me to go full frame.

It’s dam sight cheaper too to buy great glass too....love your passion too. Yup agree we need to get out more. I now use my lunch break to take pics....agree on gear freak syndrome. Hi Henry, thanks for your thoughts. The D7200 is still a great camera and I love it. As you realized, lenses are much more affordable! For landscape you'll use about 10 to 20mm lenses as you do; I have the Tamron 10-24mm. But where the D7200 actually becomes divine is macro photography with my Tamron 90mm f/2.8! Just to fire up you G.A.S.: try to get a used Nikon DR-6 right angle viewfinder in time because they're becoming rare! It's an enormous advantage when you shoot from a low position. I got mine a year ago for 110 Euro and I had to order it from Japan because there was none in Germany at that time. That's a part of gear for the D7200 I never would give away, it's turnable 360 degrees and has a built-in switchable 2x zoom with brilliant light transmission.
BTW, I forgot to mention: the D7200 is capable of infrared photography without modifying due to lack of a low pass filter.

Great video. A hobbyist I couldn't justify spending huge amounts of money on a full frame camera and bought a D7200 instead. I can safely say that I have never looked at my photos and thought i could have done better with full frame. I do have a couple of nice fast lenses - Tamron 17-50mm F2.8 & Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 which are fantastic. It's a great camera and as far as I'm concerned it's everything I need and more.
Having said that, if I win the lottery i would go and buy a D850!

Well said, Henry. While Full frame definitely has its place, it's not my cup of tea (yet?). There are just so many factors which I like about Crop sensors: cost, smaller bodies (but not too small, my favorite is APS-C DSLRs 😅), the already impressive feature set... My perfect camera size already exists, but my perfect camera itself I haven't found yet - And I probably never will. But that's fine, I've got something quite close.

Full frame has one huge advantage that cannot be overcome with crop sensor cameras, which is the ability to have a very shallow depth of field. That is not an issue for some and for others they live in a world with a very narrow plane of focus. To each his/her own...

Earls Hill, great viewpoint on the right day. I recently bought my first (crop sensored) DSLR. I do a lot of hillwalking in Shropshire and beyond and am looking to take better photographs, first outing last week was a bit of a disappointment on Brown Clee, combination of very strong winds, pretty poor flat light and my basic lack of knowing how the camera works! Very early days, guess it's going to be a case of trial and error to begin with, these vlogs are very helpful.
