The Les Mis movie is the one I show to my non-theatre friends because they wouldn't be able to sit through the concert version. I don't mind it at all but its obviously a whole lot better on stage. I HATE the Phantom movie, however.
I don't really like any performances of Les Mis, but I think that's more how even the stage show is too much (at least the people in phantom are meant to be ott). And the anniversary concert's stripped set and lack of person mikes removes the one thing the show had over other gothics (the design and choregraphy).
I feel like the phantom movie is okay and agreed gerard is not a pahntom but I have to say any staged filmed musical filmis so much better than a produced films so I have to agreed with you on the les mis one
I love Mamma Mia 2, but I can agree it has its flaws. The back and forth from the past to the present was kinda headache inducing. I was also confused on how people got to the island in less than a day. Dude, you're in Japan. It'll take at least two days. So yeah, I have my nickpicks. But I love the movie. I just feel like if you made the past its own movie, it would have been so much better. Same with the present. Make those two seperate movies. But I still love the film.
I really don't like that movie (except I adore Patrick Wilson as Raoul) which is unfortunate because it is my favorite musical. Luckily, we always have the lovely alternative of Phantom of the Opera: Live At the Royal Albert Hall.
Honestly I despise Emmy (?) As Christine, she does barely any acting in my opinion and her voice is fine, but nothing compared to the stage actresses who've done it
but without him we wouldn't have had the funniest ever delivery of the line "this is the point of no return" which honestly made me laugh so much i don't even care that he was bad
I mean that movie is what ultimately made me fall in love with musical theatre, so it will always be a part of my heart, but yeah it definitely is not the best adaption
The point of la la land isn’t the music. It’s not intended to be broadway style at all. La la land is meant to be soft and natural and real. The point is the storyline. The message of having to sacrifice things to achieve your dreams. The ending is sad, which is weird when you think about it because both Mia and Seb get exactly what they set out to get at the start of the film. But as an audience we find it sad because we’re invested in their relationship, which they have to give up on. It’s so real and so forgiving. As an artsy person, I find it truly honest and inspiring. The vocals are often weak, sure, but they are raw and natural. Maybe I wouldn’t love to listen to the soundtrack quite as much as something like heathers or Hamilton. But the words have so much meaning and the use of themes throughout the music itself is magical
Grace Phillips I see where you’re coming from, but the sheer fact that they made it a musical means that I expect more. Tbh they could’ve pulled a my fair lady and had someone sing for them and I’d be happy. I like the plot, but the singing erks me
Fijigoya 123 I mean they have a few musical numbers, but most of the soundtrack is instrumental, which most films have. I think the intention of the weaker voices was to make the characters seem more like everyday people, and that the main focus of the songs is the lyrics. I do see where you’re coming from though; I don’t have la la land songs on my musical theatre playlists because they don’t really fit in. However I still enjoy the songs as a lot of the lyrics are very emotional and meaningful for me
I think the problem is that they always want certain actors to play the roles and don't really care if they can sing or not. Which I think is very disappointing because there are so many great singers/musical actors out there. It's always the same.
I'm sorry you had to take your video down! I wanted to hear you elaborate on why you didn't like Mamma Mia 2, but I get why you didn't. Just know that you're entitled to your opinion, and if people get aggressive in the comments it says infinitely more about them than it does about whatever opinions you're expressing. I mean, come on. We're talking about musicals here, not immigration crises.
My problem with a lot of movie musicals is that they would rather hire famous actors with lacklustre voices rather than lesser known people who actually have the voice to pull off the character well, it’s all about making money and getting people to see it rather than creating a quality film
I remember watching Angela Lansbury's performance of "Worst Pies in London", and there were comments saying how Helena's performance was better, and I was just like "Please tell me that's a joke."
i don’t hate the sweeney movie but in my opinion, the movie and the stage show are two entirely different entities like they just aren’t the same in any way. the aesthetics and sounds are just too different
Agreed. I think they're very different. I do like the aesthetics of the film and yes, it's more... cheesy than the stage musical. But I think that they're different enough to not have to compare them. If that makes sense? heh
Same. I love the dark and haunting aesthetic Tim Burton gives, but I also love the longer and richer story that the original gives. Cause the movie kinda cut out a lot, especially with Johanna. I wish there was some sort of mix in between the two.
I totally respect your opinion, I personally love the Les Mis movie, it's part of what got me into musicals. And eventhough everyone hates Russell Crowe in it, I love his Javert and he's one of my favourite things about the film😂
i think that his voice is quite fitting with the character, quite harsh and brash. this could mean he is ‘bad’ at singing but i just really think it fits
Gerard Butler singing made me laugh so much it was so bad that I actually enjoyed the movie also Christine needs to have like an unnaturally AMAZING voice
Yeah. I mean, Emmy does have a beautiful voice, and she was trained in opera, but she cut back so much on what she learned because she thought it would be more natural. She admitted in an interview that she wish she didn’t 😂. People don’t believe me, but she really does. She recently left a tv show and said she wanted to do theatre so hopefully she’s on Broadway sometime in the next year.
Mm that's interesting - so I first heard that Justin Hurwitz composed the music and then Pasek and Paul were later found to do the lyrics, the first test one which they worked on being City of Stars. This was in an interview with Simon Mayo and Hugh Jackman, but I can't find a decent link to the podcast. However here's an article in vulture which describes how the process went www.vulture.com/2016/12/pasek-paul-la-la-land-songwriters.html (I hope youtube allows me to include external links!). But aside from that I'm interested to know - is it possible for someone to be credited as composer of a score when someone else writes the songs? That's sounds a bit off to me...
ahhh see i adore the phantom of the opera film and actually prefer gerard butler and emmy rossum's portrayals of the phantom and christine to the more technical, operatic versions. particularly with gerard butler, i feel he is able to act through the songs much better than interpretations i've seen on stage. BUT this is probably because i have such fond memories of the film and it was the first way i encountered phantom so hey ho
Acting on stage and film is such a different thing and the gritty, dark tone of his voice doesn't work. The Phantom lured Christine in because she thought he was a literal angel
I really hated la la land. And then I watched it again and thought it was ok. I don’t know what it is but I really don’t like the story and the whole movie in general. I agree with you x
tompraeger I love it but it’s my guilty pleasure because no one would expect a 13 year old boy to sit in his room and watch Amanda Seyfried singing Honey Honey
I love all of these. Most of them I can understand, except phantom of the opera, but that’s probably because it was the first movie I ever watched, I saw the movie before the stage show, and the songs have a strong connection with me because I could sing them all by the time I was two and I could sing them backwards by the time I was four so yea
La la Land is good ((setting//actresses//some songs)) but the storyline is confusing. However, I did watch it as soon as I got up ((6 am)) while I did my makeup over the course of a couple of days so that might be why
I love la la land but I didn’t like the greatest showman as much...I mean I enjoyed it but i don’t think it lived up to the hype (I saw it like six months after it came out so that might be part of it). Part of it was that I didn’t really like or relate to any of the characters that much except charity and Anne, and in la la land I related to Mia and Sebastian a lot (I love the music of both)
Rowena Ravenclaw the main issue I have with the greatest showman is the positive portrayal of a horrible man. P.T Barnum (the main character) was a real person who tortured people for fun and scammed people into viewing his “show”. The film shows him as a lovely, family guy, who never did wrong and was made to look bad by the media
I agree! I know it’s supposed to be a family film but they could still show the negative side of him without making up the whole affair subplot, there would definitely be ways for them to do that and still make him an interesting character
And not to mention there's already a musical based on P.T Barnum (called Barnum), which portrays him more accurately. He's rarely seen in a positive light, he's constantly manipulating people and playing to the audience, cheats on his wife, and makes irresponsible decisions despite people warning him against it. Not to mention the other horrible things he did in real life. HOWEVER, I do have to commend him for his decisions later in life, such as supporting an end to slavery when he entered politics, so that shows a degree of self-awareness.
As a person who absolutely loves movies and especially artistic movie making for me LaLaLand was absolutely amazing. The music is okay to me, the only song that really touched me is 'the fools who dream' but the story as a whole is just so relatable and realistic for me as an anxious creative person. And the different creative aspects made me so giddy with happiness since they varied so much. I do get why some musical theatre people don't like it but as both a movie and theatre girl it was just one of the most brilliant things to ever exist.
Mamma Mia 2 sells cause of the nostalgia factor and the slightly “WWRY” vibe of Fernando Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is just an old kids classic Into the woods just had all star actors, not singers But there are no excuses for Les Miserables
About the voices, I feel like a lower , more quiet voice can pass you what's needed. It is ,in fact, more of a cinema thing. You can't be quiet on stage, on cinema though,I feel it provides a vibe that you're inside the character's brain.
mamma mia 2 is one of my favorite prequels ever. i know that they messed up the timeline a bit, but they totally nailed the traits of the boys and lilly was amazinggg!!
I think the reason why the voices in la la land are typically less strong than the voices of traditional musical theatre actors is because each voice has to support the (somewhat weaker but still good in my opinion) voices of Emma stone and Ryan gosling, if they were surrounded by actors with fuller voices, they would be drowned out. I also think it adds to the idea of each character being a “normal” person who is climbing to fame, they blend in and are less distinct especially when singing with the crowd
I agree on La La Land. Plus, the opening number painted a picture for a completely different musical than the one the actual film turned out to be, in my opinion. Re: Into the Woods: The cast was amazing, and it was visually stunning, but I agree that Disney watered it down to the point where it wasn't much like the original stage production at all. Sure, some of the songs I was okay with being cut (No More) but there were some loose ends, fewer character deaths, and of course, the narrator was removed as well.
Some of the issues with the movie musicals now is that they cast actors who can just about pass for singers, rather than people with a history of musical theatre. That was what was great about something like Chicago, because Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta Jones and Taye Diggs were stage stars, Queen Latifah was a recording artist and Renee luckily blended in well with them all. Beauty and the Beast was really let down by casting Emma Watson. All of that auto tune made it unlistenable.
Thank you for mentioning Jersey Boys (the stage version) it really does get overlooked by the modern theatre community and that makes me sad because it is so good and the songs are amazing. And Amy I know you like it when boys sing and dance and that is Jersey Boys.... I love me some boys singing and dancing
if i had to add any to this list i’d definitely add the little shop movie. they cut out such key aspects of the plot from the show that gave it dimension and totally changed the ending. and i understand the change was to make it appeal to more people cause most people like a happy ending, but the part that makes me so upset about that is Seymour didn’t deserve a happy ending. He didn’t deserve to get the girl and the happy house he wanted. Granted, in the movie they didn’t make it as dark as the stage show (in the movie Mushnik’s death was seen more as an accident while in the stage show Seymour deliberately feeds him to Audrey ii), but still. I just don’t like how much they changed in the movie to try and make a show with such a strong dark plot seem more family friendly and make it feel like actions don’t have consequences.
As a French guy, usually I have no problem understanding everything you say in your (great) videos Amy....but I really have no idea what "wishy washy" means :) ?! Enjoy NYC !
The problem with the jersey boys movie for me was they took “Oh what a night” arguably one of the most popular songs and saved it for the credits. I was so mad. Les Mis was okay i feel Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway did very well but yeah Russel Crow was so bad. Into The Woods was also okay but I agree could have been way better Oh and Phantom, totally agree that movie is bad and it sucks because i watched the movie and have never seen the musical myself and i’ve heard the musical is really good I hope I can see it so it can change my opinion of how I feel about the musical
Quite ironic you thought the music in "La La Land" was lacking, when that and the cinematography are the only redeeming qualities for me! I love the music in the film, it's nothing spectacular but just so fun and capable of showing emotion as well. What really lacks for me is the story - it's so cliche, so typical and just makes me want...more. The Phantom film is absolutely horrid but it did introduce me to musicals (and "POTO" is still my favourite!), so, I can at least give it props for that.
The Phantom movie was actually my first introduction to the show when it came out, which is suuuper embarrassing because I thought the movie at the time was so amazing. 😂😂 It makes me cringe watching it now, it’s so awful. 😅
I LOVE this review!😄👏🏼 Even if I don’t personally agree with all of it, you had great points and good constructive criticism. I personally really enjoyed La La Land, and I mostly think it’s because it WAS a more laid-back musical. Though I still personally prefer the intense liveliness most musicals have. I feel like La La Land brought people to the theater who maybe don’t typically enjoy musicals and they ended up appreciating it (some even loving it!) more afterwards. Which really makes me happy because I will always believe that live theatre deserves more credit than it is given. I hope that makes sense😂
The into the woods movie took itself too seriously when the stage version was comical and goofy, so when the stakes rise it hits effectively. Making it all dark, grim, and serious made it to plain, the stake rise isn't noticeable because the movie was so dark already.
To be honest, I love most of these movies, but it's more because I've never had the money to see stage productions, so I've always been introduced to musicals through movies. I always have and always will love the Phantom of the Opera movie, because it's something I grew up on. I do always love hearing your opinion though! Keep it up!
Your thoughts on La La Land are on point. Also from the clips I’ve seen it’s just a bad version of Last Five Year’s. And to be fair Pasek and Paul only wrote the lyrics so you can feel better about that! Into the Woods did NOT WORK OMG.
La La Land: La La Land seems to have a negative reception in the musical theatre community. I'm honestly confused as to why La La Land isn't as loved as The Greatest Showman (another Pasec and Paul musical (They did the Lyrics to La La Land)). I'm not gonna judge someone if they enjoyed Showman more though but kinda for the same reasons you gave La La Land is why I'm not a huge fan of it. Into the Woods: Into The Woods Movie kinda loses what makes the show special, cutting out stuff that didn't need cut or changed things around without reason Sweeney Todd: Pretty much agree with you there Evita: Never seen it 😅 Phantom: Not seen the Film Les Mis: Only seen the film but I feel Russell Crowe gets a hard time for it. He can "sing" but not the right voice for Javert Chitty: I haven't seen this for a long time so I won't comment Jersey Boys: It's honestly one of the best "Jukebox Musicals" ever. It actually gives reasons for the songs to connect to the story Mamma Mia 2: Haven't seen the 2nd one but the first one I have such a love hate relationship with it. On a bad day I hate it on a good day it's an ok film
My problem with La La Land was that the storyline was really boring and that it's about two people who struggle in the acting and music industry and then they cast two a-listers as the leads. They also really missed something when the movie goes on about jazz and the majority of the music numbers are anything but it.
i respect ur opinions on all of these & i agree w some but with mamma mia, i feel like u need to go in just expecting to have fun. imo its such a fun show and you shouldnt rly go in expecting to see an amazing work of art bc you’ll be let down, but its rly entertaining and honestly, its an abba musical so whats not to love
I definitely went in expecting to have fun! I wanted to love the film so much! I just thought the basic plot holes made it difficult and confusing to watch. trust, I wasn't expecting some masterpiece and wanted to love it so much!
I agree with you about Les Mis, I don’t really like it, but I can’t put my finger on it!! Also I love your haircut!! That’s upsetting how you had to take down the Mamma Mia 2 video, while I personally like the film, you made very good points, and you didn’t say anything offensive, just stated your opinion! Keep making Amy-azing videos!!
I think La La Land is more or less geared towards fans of jazz music. Which is totally not everyone’s speed. Buts it’s personally why I love the film. I love jazz music and have been playing it since I first picked up my flute.
I think La La Land is a great movie but not as a musical theatre. In the beginning (when people were dancing) I thought "OMG THIS IS SO GOOD" but then I was "what happened with the musical THEATRE vibe?????????"
I personally don't like the sweeney todd movie musical, because i was in sweeney and they cut out about half of the songs in the movie and the entire ensemble.
The only ones I disagree with are La La Land and Les Mis since I love them, but everything else was spot on. The films of Sweeny Todd and Into The Woods were so bad they made me think I hated Sondheim for ages until I listened to the original cast recordings
i’m so glad you feel the same way about the sweeney todd movie as me!!!! it’s trash lol!!!! another great video amy!! love you 💕💕 also i’m sorry for all the hate you got on that mamma mia 2 video ): you don’t deserve that queen 💕
AMYYY! i need advice!, for a lil audition would it be okay to do a song from a musical like The Clockmakers Daughter?? I don't want to do a song the've heard a million times!!
I absolutely love the Phantom of the Opera show , I was so disappointed when I saw the movie just a few weeks ago. Like really... why cast someone who never really sang ? But hey. Very cool video aside from that !
In my opinion a common problem with most movie musicals is that they leave out a lot of the natural humor/comedy. Either by trying to make it darker/more serious or removing/changing characters. I understand that there has to be changes when adapting to the screen, but majority of the time they lose a lot of what people loved about the musicals in the first place.
Into the woods was the first big movie musical I’ve fallen in love with (I’ve seen it like 50 times) and I totally agree the cast is incredible (MERYL STREEP) and I get it if it’s disappointing from the show but I’ve never seen it live so now I totally want to see it on stage now if it’s better than the movie (which I didn’t think was possible)
I don't like La La Land either, it was dumb and kinda boring (got 40 minutes in and switched it off it was that boring!) I didn't used to like Chicago but it's kinda grown on me (the characters are annoying as hell though!) Rewatching Les Mis, I realised how bad some of the singing was in that movie (except for Samantha Barks and Aaron Tviet, her voice is magical!) and I'm not as big of a fan as I used to be, still love the actual show to death though!
I totally agree about Mama Mia 2. It was shot well and the costume designing was great as well, but the movie itself had no plot and everything was just all about the nostalgia. It is a sequel that could not stand alone which in my opinion is very important when rating a sequel.
the confrortation is one of my favourite songs in Le Mis but i hate it so much in the movie like it just reminds me of the baloon sword fight i used to do with my friends.
THANK YOU For saying Russel Crowe cannot sing. OMG I hate the Les Mis (musical) movie so much. The way they tried to do it was such a cool concept, but with the cast they had for some of the roles, it just fell flat. I also HATE LaLa Land. My husband and I went to see it with high hopes and I haven't sighed that much and rolled my eyes so much during a movie in a while. "Into the Woods" was just boring to me. I really like the stage musical, and I was curious how it was going to translate to film.... it didn't. Phantom is sort of on the fence for me. I like it because it's so over the top and silly and campy and very clearly a Joel Schumacher film, which I kind of loved. I thought Minnie Driver as the Diva was pretty great. I will say, you have two of my least favorites on your favorites. Rent and Chicago. I LOVE the stage musical Chicago. LOVE. I love Rent as well, mostly. I used to love it more, but being an adult and really digging into the characters and how no one is really a good person in it , they're all just whiny little babies and Benny is the only level headed one in the end... no really. But I digress. The movie "Rent" was just so so bad and having most of the original cast in it almost 10 years after their debut on Broadway hindered it for me because now all the actors from those roles are 10 years older and it's even more odd to see them as those characters, etc. Anyway, I love your videos and I think you're super personable and this is the first time I've commented (I think?) so hiiiii! :)
i have a lot to say. rent and into the woods are my two favorite musicals of all time but the movies just lack the heart that made them so great in the first place (wicked is my third so im kinda sweating to see how that turns out). i feel like once these shows go hollywood they rely too much on celebrity casting, who usually cant sing all too well. mamma mia is my least favorite movie musical of all time. again, i feel it relies too heavily on celebrity casting (rip S.O.S), and it really felt as though it was directed by someone who doesnt know anything about musicals, and almost looks down on them from how goofy the whole movie was. also the greatest showman can rot. the phantom of the opera is actually one of my favorite musical to movie adaptations. i agree the singing performances lack that umpf, but i felt it actually felt truer to the original product that the vast majority of movie musicals. thats all aaaa. love the discussion, amy.
i still watch the rent and into the woods movies all the time because even tho its not even close to the original product i still love listening to the songs :)
Based on the hate you got on your Mamma Mia 2 video I’m a little scared to say this, but....am I the only one who also hated the first Mamma Mia movie? 👀
Alice Ranyard I hate the Les Mis movie with a passion😂. I still watch it every once in a while tho cause 1. Aaron Tveit 2. Samantha Barks. But Javert’s voice sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me. He makes Gerard Butler’s Phantom look like Ramon Karimloo’s work.
Jeez, how does someone not liking a film come out as offensive? It’s just their opinion! Some ppl should really chill out. Anyways, great video Amy! So sorry you had to take your video down ❤️
I kind of agree that compared to the broadway/west end productions of these shows the movies aren't that good, but i think i tend to still love the movie versions (not as much as the actual stage versions of course) because its a musical i already love from the theatre productions and soundtracks (if that makes any sense). I also tend not to care so much about the voices because with movie musicals i tend to sing loudly over the top of the actors and so can't really hear their voices anyway!
i also didn't like the Evita movie adaption because she lowered some notes which kind of just killed the mood and some notes that she changed were so iconic and that just kind of put me off. But i love the musical - i saw it with Emma Kingston and Jonathon Roxmouth and they just killed it. It was amazing xoxo
A Chorus Line is my least favorite movie not only because it literally doesn't deserve to have the same title as one of the most classic musicals ever, its just also a really bad movie.
Something that I just..... Agh... At the end of Into The Woods the only thing that really bothered me was they took away a lot of the complexity with removing the story teller and then at the credits they removed the three set of lyrics overlapping one another. That was my favorite part of the whole show when they all take the lyrics and do a three part harmony starting at different parts.. Just ah
I've seen all of the Sweeney Todd film and gave up partway through Into the Woods. I haven't yet seen a full stage performance of either one, but Sondheim doesn't really translate to the screen very well. I also have to agree a little bit with La La Land. Overall, I didn't have too much of a problem with it, though it's certainly far from the best musical ever written. My big complaint with it is that the opening number felt really out of place, like it was setting us up for some musical that the rest of the film wasn't. I can't really comment on the others. I have seen the film of Les Mis, but can't strongly recall any bits of it.
I'm pretty sure La La Land is supposed to be a musical about normal people, that's why their voices are so soft and not big and broadway. I'm pretty sure that's why a lot of broadway fans dislike it because it's not supposed to be a big musical, just a movie which just uses music.
It's so funny, because I basically agreed with you for all of your best, but disagreed for(almost) all of your worst? It's so strange! Here's some of the ones I don't love (Keeping in mind I might love the show) - Phantom of the Opera - A Chorus Line - Annie - The Wiz - Hello Again (This one did make me interested in the og score a show though, which is something)
Believe me, I’m a ride op at the Universal Studios Hollywood park and every day I walked into that employee entrance and the trailer was on an endless loop, I cursed and ask myself why they would make a sequel when it didn’t need one. My friend finally convinced me to go and watch it with her and go into it not expecting much. And, Atleast for me, taking it at face value I enjoyed it; it isn’t a masterpiece but it’s not trying to be. It’s just 2 hours of fun singing and dancing to ABBA. Stil, I’m sorry you got backlash for your opinions of ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’, that’s uncalled for. We could disagree but you have every right to your opinions. Although, whenever I hear people not liking or giving it a chance, my brain just automatically plays “The Onion Reviews ‘Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again’” and I giggle to myself.
I haven’t watched La La Land, but having performed a medley of it with my show choir in uni... I legitimately preferred our rendition to the actual soundtrack because it wasn’t so wishy-washy, as you said. I loved some of the songs we did so much I went back to listen to them and was... so disappointed? A laid back vibe is great for lots of things but I’m not convinced la la land’s music was one of them?
I think for me, separating my interpretation of musicals from La La Land really helped because, at least personally, even though the music is good, it's more of an afterthought or a cherry on top of an already well constructed film. I think if they didn't have the songs in it, the story could have been even more developed. Like the songs were not it's key appeal or feature. When I watched it, I really liked it but I didn't love it and it left me feeling a tad bit dissatisfied, I'm not sure why, maybe it's because too many people focused on it being this out there musical and really it's just a romance with songs in it.
Ok for La La Land, Mammia Mia 2 and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I have to disagree because I loved those films but I completely understand why you don't like them especially Chitty because the fact you never watched it as a kid like I did and with regards to Sweeney Todd, Les Mis and Phantom, I agree, so much better on stage
I have to agree with you on all of these and the only ones I don’t agree with are the ones I haven’t seen. For Phantom they at least could’ve gotten an “angel of music” who can sing. Sweeney Todd was literally the most underwhelming movie musical I’ve watched. I am always skeptical when movies are made out of musicals because they usually fall flat for me.
“i love aaron tveit’ same amy. same.

I completely agree!!!!
I love the Les Mis movie.
RainbowSocks Harry was in Japan
I love Mamma Mia 1&2 they're my favorite Musicals!
Denabella I agree completely mate
yeah, the phantom of the opera is a terrible, terrible adaption... gerard butler stands out as just being absolutely awful as erik.
poppy harnett no one can beat Ramin 😂❤️
I really don't like that movie (except I adore Patrick Wilson as Raoul) which is unfortunate because it is my favorite musical. Luckily, we always have the lovely alternative of Phantom of the Opera: Live At the Royal Albert Hall.

However I still enjoy the songs as a lot of the lyrics are very emotional and meaningful for me
Grace Phillips to each their own (:
I think the problem is that they always want certain actors to play the roles and don't really care if they can sing or not. Which I think is very disappointing because there are so many great singers/musical actors out there. It's always the same.
I'm sorry you had to take your video down! I wanted to hear you elaborate on why you didn't like Mamma Mia 2, but I get why you didn't. Just know that you're entitled to your opinion, and if people get aggressive in the comments it says infinitely more about them than it does about whatever opinions you're expressing. I mean, come on. We're talking about musicals here, not immigration crises.
What did she say about it?? I never got to see the video :((
@@delaneystahl3404 I have no idea, I didn't get to see it either :(
I like how u describe immigration as “crises”. Try telling that to all the lefties
i feel like old movie musicals are usually way better like i prefer The Oliver movie to the stage musical
Every time you said 'so much better' I just kept hearing Legally Blonde in my head 😂
If that makes sense? heh
It's the only Tim Burton movie I like, actually.
Same. I love the dark and haunting aesthetic Tim Burton gives, but I also love the longer and richer story that the original gives. Cause the movie kinda cut out a lot, especially with Johanna. I wish there was some sort of mix in between the two.
oh gosh chitty chitty bang bang is my fav
I totally respect your opinion, I personally love the Les Mis movie, it's part of what got me into musicals. And eventhough everyone hates Russell Crowe in it, I love his Javert and he's one of my favourite things about the film😂
Saaame! I actually think he's got a nice voice
i think that his voice is quite fitting with the character, quite harsh and brash.
this could mean he is ‘bad’ at singing but i just really think it fits
I love him as Javert! what he lacks in vocals he makes up in acting!
Same here I liked his Javert, I thought jean Valjean from Hugh Jackman was way worse. I could not stand his singing in les mis.
I love Gavroche. He's got the smallest part, but he's precious.
I physically gasped when you said Into The Woods . . . then immediately remembered this is about films and you couldn't be more correct
“He just stands there and BARKS the words at people” 😂😂
I really love Mamma Mia, but everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I love to hear their side of the story.
Pasek and Paul just did the lyrics, the music was by Justin Hurwitz I believe
I agree ❤
Acting on stage and film is such a different thing and the gritty, dark tone of his voice doesn't work. The Phantom lured Christine in because she thought he was a literal angel
I really hated la la land. And then I watched it again and thought it was ok. I don’t know what it is but I really don’t like the story and the whole movie in general. I agree with you x
Same I rlly found it boring and none of the songs really stuck to me
I’m guessing Mamma Mia’s there (haven’t watched yet) because you either love it or hate it there’s no in between. 😂
And Peggy Jansen I love Mamma Mia 1&2 they're my favorite Musicals!
tompraeger I love it but it’s my guilty pleasure because no one would expect a 13 year old boy to sit in his room and watch Amanda Seyfried singing Honey Honey
Where'd you get those heathers pillows??????? I'm SCREAMING
red bubble x
I love all of these. Most of them I can understand, except phantom of the opera, but that’s probably because it was the first movie I ever watched, I saw the movie before the stage show, and the songs have a strong connection with me because I could sing them all by the time I was two and I could sing them backwards by the time I was four so yea
"barks the words at people"
SHISTAR SHNAPPED
hahahahahahhaa
*I DON’T LIKE LA LA LAND AND ITS OVERRATED*
I AGREE
La la Land is good ((setting//actresses//some songs)) but the storyline is confusing. However, I did watch it as soon as I got up ((6 am)) while I did my makeup over the course of a couple of days so that might be why
cats 2019 be like hey bitches where's my crown ?
Grace Phillips it reminds me of how people talk about how great the founding fathers were without acknowledging that some of them owned slaves
Mamma Mia 2 sells cause of the nostalgia factor and the slightly “WWRY” vibe of Fernando
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is just an old kids classic
Into the woods just had all star actors, not singers
But there are no excuses for Les Miserables
Lilla Crawford was a great singer, can't say the same for the rest.
About the voices, I feel like a lower , more quiet voice can pass you what's needed. It is ,in fact, more of a cinema thing. You can't be quiet on stage, on cinema though,I feel it provides a vibe that you're inside the character's brain.
mamma mia 2 is one of my favorite prequels ever. i know that they messed up the timeline a bit, but they totally nailed the traits of the boys and lilly was amazinggg!!
omg i'm not the only one who doesn't love la la land. That MADE MY DAY
I think the reason why the voices in la la land are typically less strong than the voices of traditional musical theatre actors is because each voice has to support the (somewhat weaker but still good in my opinion) voices of Emma stone and Ryan gosling, if they were surrounded by actors with fuller voices, they would be drowned out.
Chitty chitty bang bang is only good because of “Doll on a Music Box” and that alone. That routine is genuinely amazing.
You need to check out the movie musical "The Apple." It's not an adaptation of a stage musical, but...it is really something other than else.
OPPOSING OPPINION: SWEENEY TODD IS SO GOOD, they change it but they do it well
Some of the issues with the movie musicals now is that they cast actors who can just about pass for singers, rather than people with a history of musical theatre.
I just don’t like how much they changed in the movie to try and make a show with such a strong dark plot seem more family friendly and make it feel like actions don’t have consequences.
god, i can't stand la la land. its so boring. amazing cinematography and stuff, but the plot and the music are incredibly dull
As a French guy, usually I have no problem understanding everything you say in your (great) videos Amy....but I really have no idea what "wishy washy" means :) ?!
Enjoy NYC !
Wishy washy c'est insipide, mou, tiède... C'est meh quoi ^^
Merci ;)
Wishy Washy means like it lacks substance and it's kind of weak.
Thank you Glenda !
The problem with the jersey boys movie for me was they took “Oh what a night” arguably one of the most popular songs and saved it for the credits. I was so mad.
Les Mis was okay i feel Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway did very well but yeah Russel Crow was so bad.
Into The Woods was also okay but I agree could have been way better
Oh and Phantom, totally agree that movie is bad and it sucks because i watched the movie and have never seen the musical myself and i’ve heard the musical is really good I hope I can see it so it can change my opinion of how I feel about the musical
I was like vaguely agreeing with you and was like 'whatever it's your opinion' but damn that Chitty Chitty Bang Bang answer cut deep
The Phantom movie was actually my first introduction to the show when it came out, which is suuuper embarrassing because I thought the movie at the time was so amazing. 😂😂 It makes me cringe watching it now, it’s so awful. 😅
Me too😂
I think we can all agree that Newsies (1992) is the best movie musical! It's a movie that keeps on giving XD
Mama Mia!: here we go again -
was dreadful and there was so many mistakes and painful acting so I’m sad you took down your review x
I literally agreed with ALL your points! So glad I'm not the only one! Also please tell me where I can get those Heather cushions :')
Keep it up!
I love the cheery UA-cam music in the background about things you don't like
😂😂😂
hahahaha - gotta stay on brand!
Your thoughts on La La Land are on point. Also from the clips I’ve seen it’s just a bad version of Last Five Year’s. And to be fair Pasek and Paul only wrote the lyrics so you can feel better about that!
Into the Woods did NOT WORK OMG.
I got a DEH ad before this video. *Coincidence?* *-I think not!-*
*PUNCHES THROUGH A DOOR, BEING A MAJOR DEH FAN* WAT WAZ IT ABOuT????????????????!!!!!!!
Into the Woods: Into The Woods Movie kinda loses what makes the show special, cutting out stuff that didn't need cut or changed things around without reason
Sweeney Todd: Pretty much agree with you there
Evita: Never seen it 😅
Phantom: Not seen the Film
Les Mis: Only seen the film but I feel Russell Crowe gets a hard time for it. He can "sing" but not the right voice for Javert
Chitty: I haven't seen this for a long time so I won't comment
Jersey Boys: It's honestly one of the best "Jukebox Musicals" ever. It actually gives reasons for the songs to connect to the story
Mamma Mia 2: Haven't seen the 2nd one but the first one I have such a love hate relationship with it. On a bad day I hate it on a good day it's an ok film

@@Agnes_WR b
@@evie7839 I'm not a HUGE fan of it but some of the songs have grown on me though. With exception to Rewrite the Stars and Never Enough
Lol I don't like either of them I guess I don't like the specific writers
I love Mamma Mia movies, but I think that's because I saw them before I even HEARD of the show, so they have a place in my heart.
My problem with La La Land was that the storyline was really boring and that it's about two people who struggle in the acting and music industry and then they cast two a-listers as the leads. They also really missed something when the movie goes on about jazz and the majority of the music numbers are anything but it.
I personally really liked Mamma Mia 2 (and I totally respect your opinion), but the stage version will always be the best in my opinion :)
I was very conflicted with this. I was either agreeing 100% or completely against what you said. Either way respect the opinions. Love you Amy!
i respect ur opinions on all of these & i agree w some but with mamma mia, i feel like u need to go in just expecting to have fun. imo its such a fun show and you shouldnt rly go in expecting to see an amazing work of art bc you’ll be let down, but its rly entertaining and honestly, its an abba musical so whats not to love
I have been requesting this for agesssss. Phantom is trash but I looooovee La La Land!! I love your hair btw
Thank you so much for putting my thoughts into a video, because I've been screaming all of these things for years.
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who doesn't like the music in la la land. Every time I bring it up I get torn to shreds!
I don't like La La Land either, it was dumb and kinda boring (got 40 minutes in and switched it off it was that boring!)
I didn't used to like Chicago but it's kinda grown on me (the characters are annoying as hell though!)
Rewatching Les Mis, I realised how bad some of the singing was in that movie (except for Samantha Barks and Aaron Tviet, her voice is magical!) and I'm not as big of a fan as I used to be, still love the actual show to death though!
where did you get your heathers pillows? i love them!!
I totally agree about Mama Mia 2. It was shot well and the costume designing was great as well, but the movie itself had no plot and everything was just all about the nostalgia. It is a sequel that could not stand alone which in my opinion is very important when rating a sequel.
100%!!!!
the confrortation is one of my favourite songs in Le Mis but i hate it so much in the movie like it just reminds me of the baloon sword fight i used to do with my friends.
Grease 2 Is the all time worst!!! Hands down. It is painful.
i have a lot to say.
rent and into the woods are my two favorite musicals of all time but the movies just lack the heart that made them so great in the first place (wicked is my third so im kinda sweating to see how that turns out). i feel like once these shows go hollywood they rely too much on celebrity casting, who usually cant sing all too well.
mamma mia is my least favorite movie musical of all time. again, i feel it relies too heavily on celebrity casting (rip S.O.S), and it really felt as though it was directed by someone who doesnt know anything about musicals, and almost looks down on them from how goofy the whole movie was. also the greatest showman can rot.
the phantom of the opera is actually one of my favorite musical to movie adaptations. i agree the singing performances lack that umpf, but i felt it actually felt truer to the original product that the vast majority of movie musicals. thats all aaaa. love the discussion, amy.
i still watch the rent and into the woods movies all the time because even tho its not even close to the original product i still love listening to the songs :)
Russell Crow was just NOOOO!!!!
Based on the hate you got on your Mamma Mia 2 video I’m a little scared to say this, but....am I the only one who also hated the first Mamma Mia movie? 👀
How can you not like Les Mis?! It's my favourite movie of all time, what really got me into musicals.
OH MY GOD I AGREE SO MUCH WITH LES MIS NOT BEING GREAT AND EVERYONE HATES ME FOR IT
Alice Ranyard I hate the Les Mis movie with a passion😂.
So sorry you had to take your video down ❤️
_"I don't like La La Land"._
I literally gasped so loudly that my mum asked what was wrong.
I love the way she say chirpy chitterlings bang bang. Some please make it happen on a continuous loop.
It's so funny, because I basically agreed with you for all of your best, but disagreed for(almost) all of your worst? It's so strange! Here's some of the ones I don't love (Keeping in mind I might love the show)
- Phantom of the Opera
- A Chorus Line
- Annie
- The Wiz
- Hello Again (This one did make me interested in the og score a show though, which is something)
