      IWhile Julie is a ray of sunshine and the movie is fun, The stage show makes the Natzi invasion and why theyre escaping more apparent. When I was a kid it was like "why did they run away after their show?" I just thought they were going to miss the bus for their mountain vacation or something.

      I just saw it on it’s national tour on Saturday and it was executed VERY WELL. Costumes, set, and actors were awesome! But the plot and characterization itself is not original and just makes it feel like a silly soap opera. I mean, raoul and Erik’s petty argument over Christine song?? Christine felt like property in it rather than her own person. I predicted the ending! You shouldn’t be able to do that with Phantom stuff haha. The performers performed the numbers very well, but the songs themselves aren’t very interesting. So I agree. It’s probably one of my least favorites as well

    I adore Matilda because I think Tim Minchin is one of the most talented comedians/musicians ever! I saw it in Stratford Upon Avon before it came to the west end and I’ve seen it another two times since. Its Stratford Upon Avon cast was actually way better than the West End cast. I respect your opinion though. I totally agree that School Song is one of the best songs in the show, it’s so so clever!

    Mama Mia had fun music, but the plot was empty. I also didn't like grease. I only saw the movie versions of both, but again, no plot. A few plot holes I couldn't get over, like did they not mention what school they go to over the summer? And the music just didn't capture me like it should.

      Etta Jurima I've seen the movie adaptation "Mamma Mia!". It was AWFUL! The plot was paper thin, the acting was average at best, and most of the songs were poorly sung. My mother saw most of the movie with me when we saw it on HBO. She was so uncomfortable with the bad musical numbers. She was cringing so hard at the "Lay All Your Love On Me" part.
      Why the hell was a sequel made?

    Amy dislikes a musical? What world are we living in? Lol. I respect your opinions and always will.
    I personally don't like Shrek the Musical or Spongebob the Musical because I simply don't like the story of either one.
    , well from what over seen so far. I'm not against the music, I just don't like the story in musical form, movie form, or show form. Ok, I just don't like the shows or movies. I do have to admit that the Spongebob Musical does have some good songs though.

    Matilda: I agree completely.
    Mama Mia: I have never seen or heard, but it has never really interested me.
    The Girls: Honestly, I have never even heard of it. Now knowing what it is about, I do not think I am interested at all. It's kinda weird sounding and just...messy looking?
    42nd street: I also agree with, though I have only seen/heard bits and pieces of it.
    Bad Girls: Never seen or heard it, but about you putting it on better? I, honestly, find that the case with a lot of shows I have seen.
    Sweet Charity: Never heard of it.
    Hello, Dolly!: I have to agree with you and disagree at the same time. I enjoy the movie and some of the songs, but I would not personally sit down and be like "oh, I want to watch/go see this!", but if I had to/my friend wanted to, I would. It's enjoyable, but not a preference of mine.
    HTSIB(WRT): I like maybe two songs in it and I think the only reasons are because Darren and Daniel.
    The Sound of Music: I AGREE, THANK YOU. People are always like "WHAT?!?!?" and I am just like "...I...don't...enjoy it......", but I like a song or two, but I have to be in the mood or whatever.
    The Lion King: Honestly, I just prefer the movie better than the musical. It's a great show, but it is not my thing, really.
    Congrats on 15K, by the way :)

I got through the first act but I just thought it was so boring and I didn't like any of the characters :/ some of the songs are good though, like Light My Candle and Take Me or Leave Me. Hey Amy, I have a point on the score of Sweet Charity. The score is meant to emphasis how lost Charity feels in the big city of New York in the 60s. The songs all have different styles to reflect the different places and cultures Charity faces and how out of place she is in all of them. Big Spender is the night club culture, Rhythm of Life is the Hippie Culture, Rich Man's Frug is the rich elite, and Charity doesn't fit in with any of them. It also signifies how Charity is a tragic character who's life has no direction. I don't know if that clears up anything but that's what they were going for.

    How To Succeed is definitely not the best musical ever, but it is REALLY fun to be in! I was in the ensemble in my high school's production (as well as being the understudy to Rosemary, the female lead who sings Happy to Keep His Dinner Warm) and it was so cool! The dance for Coffee Break was hilarious and it was fun to work on characterization in it. However, had my school not done H2S, I would have never listened to it (I almost didn't audition). It's not the type of show I normally like, but it's grown a special place in my heart.

    Oh man, 42nd Street! That's one of my favorite shows and my dream role is Peggy Sawyer lol. I definitely agree with you that the story isn't amazing, but the dancing is what does it for me.
    Hello Dolly I have mixed feelings about. We did it when I was in school and I did a lot of work choreography wise on it that was really fun, but was not treated well by the cast of the show, so that made it not a great experience. The music just gets stuck in my head! I saw it with Bette Midler on Broadway (my friend is playing Rudolph, the head waiter) and it was honestly breathtaking. And the performance they did on the Tonys was so bad! They should have done one of the bigger and more impressive numbers.

    Ok so these aren't shows I hate (because I don't hate any shows) but I'm just really meh about them:
    1. Waitress- the story is beautiful and I like some of the songs but it's just not my cup of tea. I wish i liked it as mucb as everyonr does.
    2. In the Heights- I liked this musical, but let's just say if I was in NYC and it was on I wouldn't see it. There are definitely some ama az i n g songs (breathe, paciencia y fe, 96000 for example) but i just don't find it that fascinating.
    3. Charlie and the chocolate factory- the songs are good but I just feel like it's a very kid show , not that there's anything wrong with that, i actually don't think the musical is at fault so much as I'm not a big fan of roald dahl (i used to love his books when i was little but now... ehh). But i mean. Christian borle

    I saw an autism friendly performance of The Lion King with my family. I thought it felt way too slow and some of the dialogue and script were irrelevant to the plot. In my personal opinion, act two dragged on too much. It's a visual spectacle and quite a few of the songs were catchy but a few of the songs were just not memorable at all for me.

    • @carlgrimeseyepatch27
      @carlgrimeseyepatch27 6 років тому +6

      Trixiah Gaming this is an honest, curious question, but what makes a performance autism friendly? I’d love to know, it sounds rather interesting. I hope this didn’t come across rude.

    • @JP-uk4rk
      @JP-uk4rk 6 років тому +10

      They tend to turn down the volume of the microphones and make the music quieter. The lights in the auditorium remain on during the performance but are dim and not fully out. When people find the performance too overwhelming, they can chill out in the foyer for a while. At quite a few autism friendly performances, before the show, they introduce any actors that play characters that might seem threatening or frightening or the entire cast briefly. In some cases, fiddle toys are sometimes given out so people can fidget.
      Strobe lighting is cut out from the performance as well. Also, some lights are toned down too. Any essential parts of the show remain the same and the script isn't changed though fortunately.

      Trixiah Gaming oh that’s super cool, I’m happy they have that for autistic guests. Now that i think about it i can definitely see how some elements of the shows can be a lot to handle, especially the sound being really loud. Thank you for letting me know!

    I actually agree with your opinion about 42nd street! All of my friends I tell say, “Oh my gosh, why?! 42nd is amazing!” And I agree with them, it’s very well made! And I amazingly love dance-oriented shows too (most people I know can tell from my love of Newsies, Hamilton and Fiddler on The Roof, which have really good dances), but I’m still more of a person who likes musicals more for their story rather than the dance. Another reason why I like Fiddler, Hamilton and Newsies so much is because they keep the story going while entertaining you with the dances at the same time. But, I just don’t know why... I always thought the story for 42nd street was a little... boring? I don’t know.. ;

      Ugh, overrated and overhyped are just annoying words for me. I guess it might be more the word than the person using them, but I feel like they don’t really mean anything. How is it possible for Too many people to like something. I don’t really understand that feeling. I’ve been in situations where I didn’t like a show that many other people love, but it never really annoys me at all. You can just get straight to the point with, I don’t like this show, when you say “overhyped” or “overated” it feels like it’s directed more to the fans of the show, and pointing out why you don’t like the fact that so many people like this show doesn’t really make anybody stop liking it. I think the best comments I’ve seen are breaking down why exactly they don’t like a show, rather than pointing out the fact that it has too much fans. Well, sorry for my little mini rant lol

Idk. and I usually can get down with a more pop sounding musical score even though it’s not really my fave musical theatre genre (I’m big into oldies and more musically complex scores and more eclectic stuff), but their music generally “just doesn’t do it for me” 😂

    I watched the "Hello Dolly" movie for the first time today, I'd really been looking forward to it because I went to see it years ago and remembered really enjoying it. I was disappointed today, it seemed to go on for a very long time, I don't remember it being that long in the theatre! I wouldn't go to see "Billy Elliot" for similar reasons after seeing the stage show on TV.
    The only musical I would never go to see again is "Cats". I didn't feel there was a plot to "Cats" and the thing that kept me in the audience was it was a production put together by friends. I feel like most shows that I've disliked, if I was with a group of people who really wanted to see it, I could sit through it again. Not "Cats". I think it's a very Marmite show.

    Props to you for being honest Amy. If anyone gets mad at you for it or insulted, ignore them. They obviously don't get it.
    Me, personally, being 25 (as you may already remember- but there are so many others who comment here XD), but a lover of Disney, I actually REALLY loved The Lion King. It was the first ever musical I went to see, and in hindsight, perhaps that is why.
    Being my first venture into musicals, at the age of 17/18ish, perhaps the easieness and 'kidiness' of it appealed to me, not requiring as much brain power as some of the more in-depth, adult shows. It's an interesting idea that you made me think on, because similarly, the second musical I ever went to see was Mamma Mia. XD 2 for 2 of the not your favourites. :P Also enjoyable, but then I've always been a fan of ABBA, so there's that too. Perhaps the... general 'meh' of the shows, appealed to me because of my lack of experience with the musical world? Food for thought.
    It's a pity about the Calander Girls one, as I LOVE that movie so much, and its a pity that they potentially lost the power the great, classic actresses did in the movie so beautifully. But oh well. So few can match Helen Mirren and Julie Walters when they hit their stride. (On a side note, I also love The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. Just a movie, not a musical, but also great actors and actresses of the same calibre. Definitely worth a look if you haven't seen it).

Then I saw the revival this year on tour and it was one of my favorite shows of the year, almost solely for how gorgeous the costumes, sets, and lighting were. It has a lot of weak songs, but several really strong ones, and I was pretty shocked how much I liked it. So I think it's a case where the production can make it work? Having seen it, I'm like... retroactively and pointlessly mad at the horrifically bad casting of the movie! Streisand was too young by at least 20 years!

    I don't really like Shrek The Musical tbh (funny bc I'm in in currently lol). Like, some of the songs I adore, like Who I'd Be, Believer, Freak Flag, and Story of My Life, but the problem is I've always hated Shrek as a child, so that ruins it for me. (Although in our production, our Shrek is a good friend of mine and he does an amazing job). Also Dear Evan Hansen. I thought it was a lil too sad for my liking. The topic of the Musical was really heavy and not something I can often listen to.

      Lyss totally see where you are coming from with Dear Evan Hansen even though I love DEH with all my heart. I felt the same way whenever I first watched a bootleg of the original Broadway cast of Next to Normal a few years ago which shares a lot of similar themes as DEH. It just felt far too depressing for my liking at that time (especially cause it was like 15 when I watched it and I had a hard time relating to the story) and I got like halfway through the second act and it still wasn’t doing it for me. Which is a shame cause I love Aaron Tveit and Jennifer Damiano. But the show did eventually grow on me the older I got. But it was weird I didn’t enjoy it cause i was also a huge fan of Spring Awakening at the time and that also deals with very dark and mature themes but I just couldn’t get into Next to Normal for whatever reason.

      I think for me I look at Shreck as "That was a really good show, considering that it's a stage musical of Shreck" The score is great and it had some great talent but I am with ya on the not a huge Shreck movie fan and so it's blah.

      I recently had to sit through a production of Shreck that was so painfully bad I wanted to shoot myself. Im not saying that because i didnt get a call back (which i should, just saying) OMG it was so horrible though. I was so glad I wasn't in it. They had nice bilboards though. I also like the donkey pot pie song better than the one that is in it now.

    Some of them I feel you, some of them I was surprised until you explained that the themes really mean a lot to you. It's always interesting to hear peoples' points of views on this since even though we may love musicals we all have some we just don't like. I live in the US so some of the shows you mentioned I've never heard of and some that I didn't like may have never come to the West End. My least favorites are West Side Story(the 2009 revival was half in spanish and the understudies were way under rehearsed which was unfortunate), the Little Mermaid (they changed the ending with Ursula so drastically that it just felt disappointing and even though I was maybe 16 at the time the whole show felt like they were trying way too hard to appeal to children), and probably Cats (music is great I was even in it and enjoyed it immensely, but when you're in a show playing the lead and you still have no clue what the plot is I feel like something's faulty about it), and just most Rogers and Hammerstein (their music just doesn't do it for me I can't explain why just not my thing)

    • @AmyLovatt1
      @AmyLovatt1  6 років тому +1

      Ooh the revival West Side Story was on when we were performing our production of WSS and we took a lot of inspiration from that show - I sang A Boy Like That in Spanish, but totally get it won't have been for everyone! I can't imagine the Little Mermaid would be my kind of show to be honest!

    • @Margot_Lazarus
      @Margot_Lazarus 6 років тому

      Honestly the Little Mermaid NEVER should have been put on stage. So bad! If it weren't for the fact that it was one of the shows a summer intensive I did as a teenager included in tuition I never would have gone to see it. I saw some unfortunate productions through that week long intensive in the 3 years I did it. Also got to see some amazing ones, but sometimes the bad ones are just so bad that you remember them better than the good ones. West Side Story might have been better if their understudies were better rehearsed. The night I saw it they had understudies for Anita, Bernardo, Tony, and Riff. Riff and Tony were actually good but Anita was a hot mess she couldn't keep up with the dancing in America and Bernardo was hitting some off notes and just didn't feel like he was completely in character. The Spanish was a really cool idea, but when you don't speak it and they don't announce that the English is in your playbill it gets a little confusing at times. I think that was the only show Lin Manuel Miranda was affiliated with that I didn't like. In The Heights and Bring it On I saw and both were wonderful I was thinking Bring it On might not be so it was a nice surprise. I haven't seen Hamilton because I mean tickets are sold out constantly but the album is great so if it ever tours in my area I'm totally seeing it.

    Cats - I actually wanted to leave after the first act, but my mom wouldn't let me :(

      Well, with Jermemy and Chrisitine I find you can simply listen to their voices and the way they sing, and then get an idea of what they're characters are like. Which is awesome! But there's definetly better singers out there.

      linni X yeah, i agree with that. i think that the tone you sing with is important for giving people a feel of the character. what i meant by my comment was that i’m not exactly a fan of some of the techniques they use while singing (like that thing christine does at the end of lines where she makes it sound breathier and more high pitched? what’s with that)

    I personally dislike 42nd Street purely for the fact I was in it last year in the ensemble. Thing is we had the pure definition of Production Hell. We had a new music teacher and she and our director couldn't go a single rehershal after fighting. Dancing was horrible by having high schoolers doing professional tap dance move when most of us have zero tap dancing experience. We had to have two separate Saturday rehershal just for dancing. We also learned stuff during Tech Week including staging for Lullaby of Broadway, the ending dance number, and the night before the first performance the girls learned that we were going to have to sing in Shuffle of to Buffalo offstage. It was so bad one night we went to 11 o'clock at night. Our school starts at 7 am and we're high schoolers! Despite it being almost a full year later I still can't listen to the songs with put flashing back to that craziness. The only good part was it became an inside joke between everyone who was in it. I know I went on for a bit but I just had to express why I don't like this show.

    My list is an odd combination of self connection and love,
    1) In the heights
    I love and memorised all the song and the self finding things. I feel if I was there (in my early 20s), I could understand what was going on around me
    2) Hamilton
    This is more about how it brought me into Musicals. Plus I have all 46 (plus 2 cuts) songs memorised
    3) Heathers
    This one took a while to get into. I love the cult classic and the music.
    4) The Newsies
    I, I have no comment
    5) Dear Evan Hansen
    I loved the musicals and the little jokes that only last a song at most
    6) 21 Chump Street
    Its short and I need someone to help singing it
    7) Shrek
    It's just over played with me.
    Technical 8) Be More Chill
    I just couldn't get into the musical
