    I've been waiting for someone to do this comparison for a while. I have found that disc weight is very important. For example: If I throw a 175 gm Wave (11/5/-2/2) It's going to do nothing for me except fly to the left. If I throw a 160 gm Wave, I can get it to stand up in a Hyzer flip, and even get a little turn out of it before it starts to fade. My distance drivers go from 155 - 160, from 9-13 speed. As the speed of my discs decrease, I can increase weight with less control issues. Wind is also a determining factor in which weight I throw. In a stronger headwind, I can get away with throwing a heavier, more over-stable driver, and get a straighter flight out of it, whereas a lighter disc will be more likely to turn over in a headwind.
    Thanks for the great video!

    Innova and MVP are the only manufactures making a steady stream of lighter discs. For me as I get older, I want any disc over a 6 speed to be in lighter weights. I prefer 160-165 gram. Wish more companies understood the demand for this.

      Also Westside. They go down to 155g with MVP plastics and 145g with the MVP Air plastics.

      I would imagine these large companies understand the demand, but with only a small fraction of disc golfers preferring light weight discs, they probably can't justify the machine times and inventory space for something that has a lower demand and other companies are already doing

      I'm 60 and lighter weights have helped me a ton, wished I would have started with them, it seems to help by throwing them then stepping up in weight as I get better at throwing. More beginners would benefit from this, I know I have.

    As an older player most of my distance drivers are now under 170 grams. From an earlier IceBerg video I have also added 130 and 140 weight discs to my bag. My game has definitely improved:).

    Last year I experimented with lighter discs in the 13 drivers and fairway drivers I bag. I experienced noticeably improvement. Based on one of your previous videos, I experimented with having a max weight and mid weight of each mold. I found my max weight set performed far and away better. A fun process to be sure. Thanks for all your work Dylan.

  • @meister-t
    @meister-t Рік тому +4

    OK, try this: same mold, same plastic, same _color_ (!) Compare 165 with 180. Use a gold and silver metallic markers to write the weight on each in big bold. I've seen many discussions by players far more experience than I, giving feedback that different color additives will modify the plastic's properties. Maybe your blue one was simply more overstable, and would be so, regardless of weight?

    • @Zielmann633
      @Zielmann633 Рік тому

      In my experience color has been less of a factor with MVP than other brands. I think it's because the overmold is providing the actual shape of the wing, and that's the same material on both discs. I think same run is the more important part, since run-to-run variance is still going to occur. So it's still possible from this sample size, if they weren't from the same run, it could just have been run-to-run variance rather than a weight difference.
      But anecdotally, I typically do find their stuff in the 165g range to trend a bit less OS than their max weight stuff, as long as you're comparing the same plastic. I would exclude Fission from that though. It sometimes behaves a bit weird.

    A rule I follow now when buying distance drivers: light weight for US downwind discs, and 175ish for more stable into the wind discs. For lower wind situations, I tend to gravitate to mid/high 160s.

  • @mstoochn
    @mstoochn Рік тому +1

    My experience has been, lighter discs will get up to speed with less arm speed however they are more sensitive to wind and tend to fade quicker when thrown high due to less weight behind them to push them forward. That said, Utility/Roller discs in lighter weights are desirable in many situations. I definitely prefer 170-175g living in an area with very mixed wind conditions, i've throw 150-155g discs and they will flip a lot quicker. Would recommend lighter discs for newer players, they are great for teaching a player to be smooth while getting the proper flight, rounding is more obvious to the thrower with light discs.

    Your release point was the same on the second throw. Your last throw had the widest variation on release point. The lighter weight does matter, but your release needs to be pretty consistent for a truer test.

    started throwing in my 20's - now almost 60. used to rip forehand/backhand max weight drivers. i don't now how old you are - but i can safely say by 60 you'll be throwing lighter drivers. that 10-15 gram difference can EASILY be felt during a throw

    I'd like to see a comparison on fission type discs, like blizzards etc.
    If you go to a 50g disc but in fission or blizzard, would you get similar results. Those discs are supposed to maintain stability at even lighter weights than what you just showed.
    Anyways, thanks for the good videos👍

  • @haukikannel
    @haukikannel Рік тому

    MVP, because of rim, have more weight in the outer rim compared to those discs that are not overmolded… That is why they are less understable in light weight than other ones,

    I find that weight only comes into play with the wind. I have a 155g plasma Photon that is a total beefcake, a 152g fission Photon that is super flippy and a 172g proton Photon that is stable but very workable.

  • @HonduDan
    @HonduDan Рік тому

    I used to bag a lightweight Impulse and it was fabulous. It started getting a bit too flippy after a few years, still use it as a backhand roller from time to time, but not much. It's like a really nice flying, semi-beat in Roadrunner out of the box.

    @danh413 Рік тому

    I got a noodle arm (max like 360ft on flatground) and I bag a 145 fission photon, it's absolutely great. Fission is supposed to be like the disc is 20 grams heavier so I never understood why they have 175 gram fission discs when that would mean it flies like a 195 gram disc. I also bag a bunch of non fission disks in the 160s and honestly would never go back to max weight for my drivers. Mid ranges and putters I still bag 175

  • @rageoid
    @rageoid Рік тому

    As a semi-retired person I've gone lighter over the years, body just not as resilient as it used to be (easier to get injured, and way harder to recover from even a strain). Still throw 160-175 mids and putt/approach, but no drivers over 160, most in the 150's - works well, except in some wind. I find I can throw the lighter drivers a little farther, mostly, lot of variables.

    As someone who will have most drives in the 350' ball park, I feared that I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between my proton Photon and my neutron wave 11/5/-1/2.5 and 11/5/-2/2 and 161g and 164g respectively. No it's a brilliant combo in my opinion, if you have enough arm to get consistent turn out of the wave. My Photon is more overstable than my 138 gram blizzard champ boss (13/5/-1/3). My current bomber disc is actually a 172g star mystere (11/6/-2/2) but thats cause its just a bit more stable and consistent than my Wave. I think more people cause utilize weight as a way to help subtlety influence their disc flights if they are close to desired but not quite. That being said I do have a fair number of other max weight distance drivers, and all my fairways and 9 speeds are max weight, unless they are gyro, or something I have from my starter set.

    Wind will make a big difference for weight. If it’s windy you want weight and over stability. If it’s calm. Lighter weight every time for me

  • @cvikingfishing462
    @cvikingfishing462 Рік тому

    The thing I would love to see is the disc speed. Is the disc actually less stable because of the weight or is it just coming out a little bit faster because its lighter. In my experience my 172g wave flies somewhat similar to my 159g wave. The 159 g wave does fly a bit more understable but the thing I seem to notices more is that it just seems like the lighter disc comes out faster therefore the disc itself is not actually different because of the weight but that I just throw it faster.

  • @johanekekrantz7325
    @johanekekrantz7325 Рік тому

    What i find extremely odd is that there is such a small difference in weight of disks compared to the size of the humans throwing them. Im roughly 3x the weight of my kids. I imagine that throwing a 175g disk for them must feel like me chucking a 500 gram disk around.

    My fairway and distance drivers are always 167-169. It’s the ideal weight unless you have 500 ft power.

  • @sickeffect
    @sickeffect Рік тому +1

    Hey just a heads up...not trying to be a jerk here...if you slow this down to .25 speed you can see you are throwing nose up, which is causing the Photon to fade out much earlier than they will if thrown nose down. If you wanted to, you could bend your wrist down slightly and achieve the nose down angle that will drastically improve your disc flight and distance. They will fly straighter for much longer before fading as they will cut through the air with the top of the flight plate and not the bottom. I appreciate videos like these, keep them up.

  • @MiikaKontio
    @MiikaKontio Рік тому

    To me this test was flawed because you always threw the discs blue first white second. Second throw is always better because you adjust the speed, the angle and nose control from the first throw. So nothing can be said about weights here
