Living in a prius and doing Doordash is the best living scenario out there

Great setup, but u dont need black towels, just get tinted windows. So much easier dude. Another plus to tinted windows is that u can see whats going on outside the car. Very important, especially if your boondocking alone.

I've been living in a prius for over a year and thought it was just me...! To save petrol you can remove the rear seats, belts, carpets and spare wheel (in uk) which will offset the bed and stuff. Super video's A+

I bought a used 2007 prius, and I just rolled it over past 400,000 miles, after going to Mexico and back from Michigan. Battery pack and electric all works fine and is original as far as I know. Needs valve lifters and new catalytic, though.

Just a suggestion to anyone planning to drive in Mexico. The gas stations are out of gas, due to the corruption in government. Learned about from a posting on Facebook today, Jan. 12, 2019.

I've been living in my van for 3 years, and i'm regretting the amount of space I have, because i have so much empty space, and stuff i don't use and don't need, i think the Prius is my next step, something about 5+ times the fuel economy is really getting me excited

I remember watching this video when it first came out-almost 5 years ago. Wow. When Bob said people in other countries think a 400 SF house is average and in America people think it is a tiny house, I thought about a friend of mine and his wife who purchased an old Parson's cottage which was 375-400 SF. It had 2 bedrooms. I initially questioned if it was big enough. He told me his wife grew up in China so she was OK with the size. That was before I watched Tiny House videos for a couple of years and Bob's channel for 5-6 years. I am always learning thanks to Bob and the Community.

I really like your perspective on how everything can be "relative." As time passes, I see things more and more this way and find that more positive moments occur with "less" as opposed to "more." BTW, we have 2 gen two Priuses, and my wife and I love them!

  • @tybrady64
    @tybrady64 7 років тому +28

Exactly! Compared to a backpacker, a Prius is quite roomy! With that great gas mileage, you could travel so much cheaper. I wonder if you could run a 12 volt DC refrigerator off of the big battery?

I still used square (top view) frozen water bottles in my Dometic fridge/freezer to equillibriate down time with no issues running off 12V and the stock 120W limit outlets. I also used two freezer packs that claimed they'd stay below ) like -15... though not sure after reading into more where the frozen water works just as good. Haven't use in a year... and hoping works OK after sitting.

Great examples of travel, from bike travel to whatever you travel with! Yes the Prius is the best travel car! Generator on wheels, 65+ MPG (but in the case of travelers I guess it's lower cause all the stuff they are carrying), loads of storage space, most dependable car ever made, and endless upgrades! One company makes a tent that hooks to the back hatch if you need more space sleeping! Great video! Keep on going!

for people with a larger budget I recommend the Brompton folding bike (Made in London, England) that are very very compact in size - 16" wheels and very small when folded. They cost over 1000 USD but are made of excellent quality matetrials and can last for a very long time.

Dirty little secret about the Prius: It's good for home improvement center runs! It's basically a covered pickup.
Oh, and only some variants of the current (4th) gen Prius have Lithium Ion batteries. These have NiMH (Nickel Metal Hydride) batteries.

Is there an advantage to the Lithium batteries? I assume they are more efficient and lightweight but the old ones seems great as well..

    • @dblissmn
      @dblissmn 4 роки тому +1

There's a big variation in the size of these batteries now which is significant from the generator standpoint. The current LiIon FWD batteries are only 0.75kwh. The AWD NiMH ones are 1.2kwh, I think, which is generally great but with one significant catch -- the rear motor and inverter intrude on the wheel well making it impossible to have a spare tire whereas the LiIon models can take a compact or even a full size spare. So I'd be inclined to check capacities in the used ones because 0.75kwh won't work as well for HVAC in the way this guy is using it. Go with the current RAV4 and you get 1.6kwh NiMH and IIRC a full-size spare.

Just an FYI, for those complaining about living in a car, it is his/her opinion whether they feel comfortable living in a car (like a Prius) or not, if they don't want to live in a minivan or full size van. They can sure use the fuel economy in a car. And, yes, it is the same video from before, but Bob Wells himself did very well with his videos from his other channel, so don't go complaining that it is the same video.

I don't want to be anywhere in particular for too long, and my job allows me the flexibility to work mobile.
With that said, I'm pretty sure this is my strategy. Just read a post on reddit from a google employee that has been in his prius for a year and loves it. The climate control seems to win out for me over other mobile options. Time to sell the 4runner.

hiker750 I'm a vacation camper, in a minivan as a bedroom and cabin tent as a living/dressing/bath room. I braid or put my long hair in a bun, wash it at a commercial campground or water jog at the local pool. Dry shampoo helps if you have to boondock. Also, Planet Fitness has showers if you're in the city. Also, consider joining Sisters on the Fly if you want to camp and fish, and not be alone. Happy trails.

I went to habitents and keyed in at the www, habitents for prius. Looks really funny, but I'm for anything that makes me laugh. Gives you an idea of how you could build one yourself. Lightweight aluminum piping, water proof tent material, "no see-em's" fine netting, and bungie cords....there ya go ! I'm thinking you could even make an "extension" to the tent for showering. Hoola hoop it....shower curtains clamped around for privacy, BAM, a shower !

Excellent, I see no reason to waste the space in the back with a bed. I camped in a 1993 honda hatchback with my wife for 10 day trip just using the seats. I'm 68 and slept like a baby. It is so easy to just pull in somewhere and recline the seats, cover up with a big down jackect. Then in the morning just put the seats up and go. With a prius and climate control it's ideal.

You think the Prius is nice? Try the 2010-2017 Lexus CT200h. Its the exact same hybrid/drivetrain as a Gen 3 Prius.
It does all the same HVAC cooling engine starting stuff. Seats fold flat to sleep in, just a bit nicer inside, and I think its stealthier. Who would think someone living in a Lexus is homeless!?

Using a hybrid for this is bloody genius. It doubt anyone could beat the Toyota engineers and their millions in R&D with a homebrew solution to the house power and heating problem. Too bad the Proace isn't available as a hybrid. Maybe some time in the future..

Thanks for sharing your interesting video. I would like to share my experience with my recently purchased Toyota Prius 2010 with 150,300 miles used car. I bought it in North Carolina for work convince. I have no experience using prius before, and it is a used car. I have no confidence to drive it for long distance. However I decide to drive it to visit my family 800 miles north. So in 2018 summer, I first time to drove it all the way to the destination and finished my journey in 15 hours in one day. And after 2 days short stay, I drove it back to NC to work. It only costed me 100 dollars for gas for the round trip. Can you believe it?

400sq ft, or 37 m^2 is a decently big appartment for 1-2 people, but a bit small for a family of 3 or more.

10:59, are you saying by drawing from the 12v starter battery, you are actually drawing from the Prius battery? Any idea how AH of draw (without starting the car) you have on a full Prius battery?
Also, do you sleep with climate controls on? if so, does starting engine wake you?

Starting in 2010 (I think) Prius also has an option for a solar powered vent fan that works with the power off and helps keep the vehicle from getting super hot in the sun. We live in Northern California and this feature works very well for us in the summer. It keeps the interior temperature about 5 to 10 degrees warmer than the exterior temp. It works even better when we remember to put the sun shade in the front window. It's worth looking for this option if you decide you want to get a Prius.

    • @KellyS_77

      It really is.
I wish Toyota would extend that wonderful innovation to their other vehicles, especially the Sienna. ;)

After a month on the road sleeping in my Honda Fit- next step see if anyone else is Im thinking up upgrading to a Prius. I always carry a small Coleman done tent and use for a screen room- really prefer my bed in the Honda. 1/2 hatchback with really thick foam covered by really thick comforter, with 2 50- degree sleeping bags. They match so I put one inside the other and sleep on top with a sheet for hot weather ,inside the one bag for middies cold and inside both if really cold.this set-up is more comfortable then my bed at home so Im itching to go full time.

I FT in an '05. I would suggest an '06-'09. They are still gen 2, but Toyota upgraded the interior for '06+. Also, I would pass on the HID for the halogen headlights

The biggest issue with the Prius is the hybrid battery, but you get reconditioned ones for far less than a new one with 1 years warranties, around 800.00 900.00. New will set you back $4000.00. yikes!

I know the size would work because I use my 2014 Toyota RAV4 to live full-time as a nomad in my mobile bedroom space. I have always been intrigued by the climate control in a Hybrid. Its difficult at times in cold temps or high humidity or hot temps without the climate control. I do have 120W solar. Do you have any suggestions?

don't ask how I come across this stuff lol but glad I did..
I see you have a dog there bob. I have a cat and have wondered how I would go about living this way possibly in the future.
landlords unfortunately aren't friendly with animals plus on a very tight budget.. most anyway so got to think of other possible alternatives. I have a ford falcon (sedan) for what it is worth myself but would like to get a wagon before and if I would plan on doing anything.

It’s called a Prius V. It’s more like a station wagon and it gets 30-40 mpg rather than 50-60. The Prius form -- low to the ground, almost triangle shaped, short- Is a large factor in its fuel economy. (Obviously I’ve thought this through for myself...)
