I give this gentleman so much credit. I took care of my husband for many years before he died at home. It was very hard for me and I am a critical care nurse. I am almost 55 years old and I am wanting to do this when I retire. Hopefully at 62. People usually judge others when they have never experienced a spouse who needs 24/7 care. If she has Alzheimer’s or dementia she may not even know who he is. I give him so much credit for moving on with life. He took care of her with 2/3’s of the House proceeds, not 50%. That’s a great husband! Best of luck to you. I am hoping to join this group one day as well. I am excited on my decision. Best wishes.
Its fun to see that Sam is still out there. He was interviewed by New Jersey Outdoor Adventures in 2022. He was still in the same rig, but planning to scale back to a Class B. He lost some weight, but looked very healthy and happy.
Thank you so much to your guest, Sam , for sharing. I'm sorry to hear about his wife's health. I would never ever consider other peoples opinions of how I want to live and I am a woman. I live how I want to live. You can spend your whole life living for everybody else and before you know it you're dead.
Hello Cheryl. I appreciated your comment very much. Yes indeed as life is short and living free is the only way for me. I am also a full timer named Sam and wouldn't have it any other way. Id rather live free and happy than for someone else and be miserable. I actually visit so many VA s that my RV is often at a VA. In the military we said live free or die. The life is amazing meeting so many fine and nice folks across this nation.
Didn't realize we had so many here who are so quick to question or judge people like Sam so critically regarding their and/or their partners decisions. I'd like to give Sam the benefit of the doubt and think maybe his wife insisted he do what he's doing. As I see things currently, if I were the one in a care facility, I'd prefer my better half move on and get the most out of what's left of their life. Contemplating my being like a boat anchor on my better half's happiness would cause me great psychological pain. Besides, given all the money he's likely to save living the boondocking lifestyle, I doubt he'd have much trouble getting back to his wife's care facility within a day or so if needed. For all we know, he may only be a couple of hours drive from the care facility where he's been living. Unfortunately, if people continue to judge and be critical of people like Sam without knowing all the facts (and even with all the facts), there's a good chance we won't be seeing too many people willing to be interviewed by Bob Wells on video that so many of us like to watch. Carry on Sam, you deserve to live your life as you see fit and not be shamed or guilt driven to live up to the expectations of others. Good Luck!
Thank you so much for taking time to share your adventures with me. Sorry your wife isn't able to be there with you but am very glad you decided to follow your dreams and give this way of life a try. I am also sorry for the judgemental attitudes of some of the other commenters. We started out with a class C then went to a Class B and now have the class A. Haven't used it in several years. I don't have a clue what the very first one was, it was so old I think Noah had used it to live close to where he was building his Ark. Hubby has no interest in traveling. I took it out alone several times and really enjoyed it but there comes an age when a married person needs to stay a little closer to home. I would love to take off in it and go do some visiting. We are in Missouri so half-way across the country and we could be anywhere. Enjoy.
Bob, this is a great video again. I really like Sam's rig. It is very homey looking and appears to be very solidly made. I am sorry that his wife can't rv with him. When he spoke of her, it looked like it saddened him. He spoke of how she helped get them financially stable when younger and that is why he is able to do this now. Thanks for sharing Joyce
What a great thing you're doing Bob. You love helping others! That's the most important thing in this world. Keep up the great work. Sam seem like a great guy. I'll pray for his situation with his spouse. God bless!!
How fun.....I'm so jealous of all of u that live this life....trying to figure out how I can do it. Retire next year and it's a dream I would love to fulfill. Seeing the country this way is so awesome.
Let's not judge this man for his choices....u all have no idea what's happening in his life. How would u like to be judged on a couple sentences about your life?
Your service to people is extremely timely. Many people are finding financial heart-ship. America is expected to have up to 70 million new homeless people due to Covid. Your channel will only get even larger.
You are so friendly Bob. I so enjoy your interviews & hearing stories about how peeps got into & are living RV life. Thank you. Sam, I'm sorry to hear about your wife's health condition. It was heart warming to hear how you're taking care of her needs while meeting yours too. God bless you & your family. Keep on camping. Thx for sharing your life.
I am sure his wife wanted him to go. He seems like a very nice man. I know I’d want my husband to travel not sit home for me. Hope you enjoy your time. Linda
If and when I do this.... I think this type of RV would be perfect. Got great room, the features I desire; indoor plumbing, shower, kitchen and decent size bedroom. Thanks Bob for this cool video. This guy has done his homework and He's new enough to give a novice prospective. Neat!
Seeing this video a couple years after this was made. I hope that he has been able to continue his journey. Best wishes for his wife. I like the rig and like his style of minimalism. I have been giving this style of living more thought. I'm not "waiting" for my husband to pass away, just watching UA-cam and reading blogs on alternative life styles.
Nice setup Sam. Sam is my nickname. I used to say "what the Sam hill is going on?" When catching the kids in a mess. Lol Congrats on your first year out. I'm headed for the mobile life style in November. I'm a lot older than you and Bob but I hope you guys won't mind sharing some insights with the rest of us newbies, young or old.
I am heading out part time in a year to take my son's for some adventures. Then full time in two years. My husband will not be joining me; medical issues and being a home base for our son in college. My daughter will come with me while she finishes high school. Then I will be solo. I'm 50 now, been raising kids as a domestic homeschooler. I am ready to take flight.. I may put my wing away for grandkids someday. Thumbs Up for you Sam.
Sam, very sorry your wife cannot be with you during your travels...hopefully she is watching. Bob, we love your videos. By far, you have the best in the RV Hood! Your video's aren't focused directly on you, always something different, informative, and interesting.
IT support.... I've been in IT for almost 40 years and can't imagine being bored in retirement! I'm bored with IT and have even done a lot of different work in the field just to remain semi-sane. ceeagee Hi what is the bes way to get into the I.T field in the USA I work for myself but am considering getting into I.T im going to community college now online
We have a 2002 Born Free 24RB Class C which is 25 feet. Bought it less than a year ago and have made some short runs around Florida which is where we live. Still have our house as we're not interested in going full time. We bought it after spending countless days searching for a quality used MH, one that will last, and one that was in excellent shape. We don't tow any vehicle as we find it's not necessary as the Born Free is like a van that can be driven anywhere easily enough. For the rest of the summer my wife and I, and Max our Poodle, will be venturing out to other southern states usually on day trips or a few days. We are not boon dockers so will be staying in RV parks or even might try public parks as I have lifetime free entrance to all national and state parks due to my VA Disibility status. Retired about 15 years ago and it took me that long to figure it all out.
Very nice I love the way you interview where you do a pre-interview ahead of time while talking to the person that way you can ask the questions in a better way which makes them a lot more presentable and gives the person a better way of answering.
Great interview. Well considered choices and great information. Wishing this man and his wife the very best. I thought I saw that Born Free had shut its doors due to financial difficulties. I hope this man is able to get his RV repaired if need be if that is the case. I don't know RV's and how much you need the original manufacturer to repair. Always learning and grateful for these vlogs:)
Great interview! My husband and I want to do this. Not sure how it's going to work yet. Plan is about 6-7 yrs out... it's figuring out income on the road for us. God bless!
Born Free makes an excellent product, it's a shame the new owners decided not to put any more money into it and instead closed their doors a few months ago.
What a great interview and certainly an inspiration. I'm a bit far from retiring, but would love to get an RV and truly live free! Best of luck to Sam.
Learn to back up...(get a backup camera) that might help..but backing up is easy once u get ur left from right figured out...been doing doing it 47 yrs. Enjoy, and good luck...😄
He has the rig of my dreams except I was hoping to find one no more than 24 ft if possible. After searching in the northeast for 1 1/2 yrs I finally went with a high roof ram promaster van. Love it but have to do a build out and don't have features of built in bathroom and holding tanks, otherwise I am very happy. Sorry to hear of his wives health issues, but glad he is able to have a camper and car he loves.
Great interview, I know I follow Carolyn's RV life and looking forward to my house selling and getting on the road. She has really been a great influence in my choice's. I only had one not in favor of me doing this and that was my youngest daughter. My son told me to go for it if that is what I wanted. So I do and I will. I started looking at RV's a year ago and was very disappointed in their craftsmanship. I think I looked at about 25 before I found a fifth wheel I could live with but I don't want to get out if I have to leave a place in a hurry, so have backed up thinking a Class C would be perfect. So thanks for the input on the Lazy Days and Born Free coaches. My folks had a big GMC in the 70's so I knew I didn't want a Class A, it would be way to big for just me. I currently looked at some older Born Free and wow they are really in good shape even in the 1998 looks almost brand new. I was surprised for sure. So again thanks for the great reviews and sharing your life with us.
I'm sorry the health of Sam's wife doesn't allow her to enjoy travelling with him. I'm also not able to be a senior nomad because of a stroke. I'm still a nomad in my heart though and I travel vicariously through your excellent videos and those of other people.
I'm 7 years from retirement and going out on the road, but my rent keeps going up every year and I need an apartment replacement now. After watching a lot of these videos and researching all the rv types my plan for now is to buy a used 5th wheel to replace my apartment. In 7 years I'll decide whether I want to keep it and get a tow vehicle or sell it and get a used class c or van conversion. I found a very nice mobile home park that has rv spaces and reasonable monthly rent. How does that sound for a plan?
This is what I want it's only me I would of done it sooner but my youngest just now is 20 and joined the Navy and I need knee surgery first so hopefully by this time next year I'll be ready
I sure do enjoy watching your videos, sir! Would sure be a ton of excitement if you ever stumble across someone with a Super-C rig to interview. Meanwhile, keep the great vids coming and I'll certainly continue watching each-and-every one of them with a ton of appreciation for ya. Cheers!
Sam Your a smart man. That’s the right way to go. Paying rent sucks, paying rents leads people to be poor and broke and have nothing to look forward to.
@@Anthony-nq4ki so are dealers...car/rv, but I didn't tell you to buy, I asked that you look to get an idea of the prices...(from dealers too). Not just craigslist, it was an example. Don't take everything literal. Check out all resources.
bob can you please tell me when the next van build is? i just bought a van last week an i been follwing you on here now since i had my heart attack bk in Feb an decided thats the life i want so i finnaly got a van an now i need help on getting ready to live in one an may I say IM SO EXCITED AN CANT WAIT .I need to know what i need to bring an where an when im in killeen Tx really Ft Hood Tx so i sure be thankful if you can help me on this info.An wanted to tell you I love your videos an im thankful for yall you do for us on teaching us HOW to live stressfree an happy on how to do it. Ive only traveled down south never west coast i been LOUISIANA fla An Alabama so i need all info you can give on how to find the van build site.an when it will be .Sir.im 55 an worked since i been 15 an have been a slave to this life well no more im done an i want my freedom an happiness .THANKS BOB
Love these interview type episodes! I agree that some RVs are made so cheaply. That is one of the reasons we opted to build our own through a used school bus and document the process. We also looked at used RVs. Are you currently in the Southwest? Any plans for heading to FL?
To my opinion the design in built camper is not a priority. The most important of any classes campers is the mecanic of the unite. Since it's for traveling in my opinion it's a must to have a really good mecanic and economical, the rest becomes second.
Sam the traveling man, on the road is his plan. He has a styling RV for sure, if he traded the Subaru for a Harley he'd be like Steve.....McQueen, The King of Kool. Sorry about the wife, but with the Harley you'd have a new life, one with hot chick's and none of that Wal Mart BS ? Here's to the good life Sam, be free and don't forget my friend..."If thé Thunder don't get the lighting will " See you down the road bro !
...These people whom Bob interview sometimes say they are ''retired.''' They can't POSSIBLY be referring to the standard age-sixty-five retirement, as most of them do not look beyond their forties, and this guy is no exception. They must retire early upon deciding to live off grid, I presume.
I give this gentleman so much credit. I took care of my husband for many years before he died at home. It was very hard for me and I am a critical care nurse. Well said Pam. I am 62 and considering doing this myself.
My wife wants to build a cottage for our retirement . We may be qble to do both . Not sure . I want a bit of adventure she wants security .

Awesome that he gave credit to his wife for being smart with money. ^5 Sam. Best to her in her care.

I am sorry to hear about your wife. It sounds like she was smart in planning for the future. God bless you and her and your family.
Dumping tanks and other care for a rig has to be way less of a chore than maintaining a home and property on your own.
This guy sounds like he's doing pretty good. A lifetime of working and now some R&R. Good for him! All the best to him.
What a nice, thoughtful man. I hope his nomadic lifestyle brings him happiness.

That is good to hear about Born Free. I have been looking at some older ones. Aesthetically they are nice looking too. Regardless of year.
If and when I do this.... I think this type of RV would be perfect. Got great room, the features I desire; indoor plumbing, shower, kitchen and decent size bedroom. Thanks Bob for this cool video. This guy has done his homework and He's new enough to give a novice prospective. Neat!
Great insight. Thanks Sam and Bob
Smart... starting in camping ground to learn and gain confidence before bonedocking
Another awesome interview
Great interview! Thank you both.
Another inspirational video. Thanks ever so much for posting.
Thank you Sam for being a true husband.
I like RV's that look residential like this one. I would be willing to sacrifice some freedom for nice comfort.
Thank you Sam , for sharing your story with us , bless you.
Thank you for the inspiration 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Sorry to hear about Sam's wife. But you still can live a dream with adversity.
Great interview. I'm sorry to hear about your wife's health. :(
Very nice rig and a very kind man...

Thanks guys for this, it's been great seeing and hearing the stories about life and RV living. Hope someday to do the same.
Hi Sam this is the second time watching this and each time I gat more information. Thank you and of course thank you Bob.

I like the idea of the wood flooring and I would also recover that couch in brown leather.....
What a great interview and certainly an inspiration. I'm a bit far from retiring, but would love to get an RV and truly live free! Best of luck to Sam.
BORN FREE CLASS C IS REALLY TOP OF THE LINE, VERY NICE!
Sam, so sorry to hear about your wife's health. Thank you for sharing your story & your rig

At first I thought this was John Goodman!!
Hi Bob, Thanks for doing these videos...this guy was so charming. Much appreciation.
Nice guy. Sorry to hear about his wife. Looking forward to the tour!
Nice job Bob, even though I spent ages trying to find this interview yesterday. That really does look like a great set up

@@Anthony-nq4ki so are dealers...car/rv, but I didn't tell you to buy, I asked that you look to get an idea of the prices...(from dealers too). Not just craigslist, it was an example. Don't take everything literal. Check out all resources.

Tank monitoring system seems like a good idea. rc
Another great video Bob!
Wish there was a link to Sams van tour. Just spent 10 min looking and came back here to find the date, so I could narrow my search. Ugh!
Sweet!!
what a nice man
I hope he is doing well
Awesome 💙💙🇨🇦
Beautiful Blessing Darling. ⚘🎚❤
Is there a video out there that explains these colored tanks, and how to find places to empty/fill them? Also what is the cost, if any?
Do you tow your Subaru on a full trailer per factory recommendations due to their AWD design? I also own a Soobie.
I'm a newbie...what's RTR? And thanks so much for your videos, I'm learning so much! (but apparently I've not learned RTR yet!)😁
Carolyn B rubber tramp rendezvous, a meet-up held (by bob) for van and rv dwellers in quartsite, az every january.

Kelvin Penner thank you Kevin
Thank you!! 😁👍
...These people whom Bob interview sometimes say they are ''retired.''' They can't POSSIBLY be referring to the standard age-sixty-five retirement, as most of them do not look beyond their forties, and this guy is no exception. They must retire early upon deciding to live off grid, I presume.
I'm 38 and thinking of retiring this way soon, but how much does one of these cost?
