From woke to MAGA to A.I.: See Erykah Badu’s entire Ari Melber interview

- Top Republicans are attacking what they call “woke” politics, and even passing laws designed to “stop” a supposed woke agenda. The singer who first brought that concept to the culture, in “Master Teacher,” Erykah Badu, reflects on social justice, culture and “woke politics” today - one of several topics the four-time Grammy winner tackles in this extended discussion with MSNBC anchor and music obsessive Ari Melber. Badu discusses her singing, deep links to hip hop, personal evolution, spirituality and approach to the music industry and business in general, including her new cannabis line with “Cookies.” She also reacts to earlier moments and videos from her career, and engages with an “assessment” of her work that an artificial intelligence chat bot generated by drawing on public writings about her music and its message. This in-depth discussion is the newest installment of “Mavericks with Ari Melber,” a series of interviews with artists, musicians and cultural icons (msnbc.com/mavericks)

Shoutout to Erykah for such a deep, thoughtful interview and taking all the questions (from me and the bot!)...
Bruuuuuh, Ari you know how to a create a space AND invite folks in - well done!. I'll be looking for more of this. 🙂
Thank you!
Totally enjoyed
Favorite artist, and Favorite Journalist…Kudos to UA-cam for putting this into my feed.
She's not deep.. Why pander to nonsesne? For views? People are pitiful.
2 minutes into this and I want to shout-out this Ari dude for knowing how to hold down a conversation that allows the interviewee to feel at peace to share as should be shared.
Absolutely, that was huge.
yea he’s very talented and to be able to do Badu that well amazing
Yes he did that 🎉
Marijuana should be legalized federally!!!!!
Ari's a pretty cool dude. One of the handful of newscasters that you can feel you can trust, plus, he don't pull punches. His everyday show makes you question how the Powers That Be allow him to continue on air.
That wasn’t an interview it was a conversation, a deep moving conversation, between intellectual equals.
Superb.
It showed respect. This is rare on television when interviewers interview Blacks or eccentrics in general.
You took the thought out of my head. Bea
Everybody has an opinion
Love this comment
And ms.glenda just loves herself as an intellectual.❤😘
Nothing like a conversation between two people who truly see each other.
nothing wrong with blind people talking mate
Everyone is showing love to Badu which is truly honourable and always needed BUT, can we just give a standing ovation for the Interviewer! He was real and made sure the conversation kept going! It didn’t feel targeted or bias. I kept putting this off because I thought it would have been.
One of the best interviews this year online right now.
Best interview with EB now and forever
The fact that she has always been in alignment with herself and still agrees to what she said almost 30 years ago is beautiful
Rare . She knew THEN who she was & wasn’t derailed. People go a lifetime and never achieve that level of self awareness. That a blessing all by itself.
Yes an old soul indeed
many of us have to grow our little backbones and it's funny to know we go from not knowing much or naive to hopefully our full self an being aware enough in life while living@@MichelleBertsch
Ari seems so excited by this interview. I always enjoy his mention of the Hip Hop culture on his show. It shows his love for the art. So happy he was able to conduct this interview :)
I Agree, Clearly he is very knowledgeable of the Art of HipHop and Music in general. He did his homework for this conversation..
I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone so excited to do an interview. This was a joy to watch!
You know I’m an interviewer critic and honestly he did what more interviewers should be doing, beyond prepared, genuinely interested and connected to the work prior to the interview, and allowed the conversation to be malleable at all points of the conversation, there was no wrong turn taken. No overarching desire to pressure her and to squeeze hot sauce out of her , but rather , inquisitively asking and learning about the sauce in her bottle, respectfully discussing ingredients, how the ingredients work together to create this one in a million delicacy
Interviewer critic..... Right
Ok Bot. Either that , or you’re from a little known groupof about 30,000 funded thru DARPA and blacbudget. Do Signature reduction ring any bells???
Very well said ! Salute
The way you articulated your thoughts on this comment section is giving MOVIE CRITIC CUT THE MF CHECK🫶🏾
An "Interviewer Critic" 😂😂😂
Loser
I must say the spiritual alignment between these two was such a beautiful thing to watch! The vibe!!!
I love the respect he shows for her and her art and the fact that he actually did research and is an actual fan...he's actually giving her flowers while allowing her to be free...very beautiful interview
There is definitely a mutual respect.. very beautiful
Wtf are you talkin' about?
@@Shahmar WHO TF are you talking TOO!?🤔
@@chellierenae Well I was talking to inessrene but now I'm talking to you. Your stupass poem is even worse. She don't need his respect and he aint allowing her to do ish. The only "spiritual alignment" he may have would be an appreciation of the one of the art forms of The Children Of Israel.
I bought Erykah's first album in early '98 as a college student mainly because I was about to go see a Lilith Fair show in San Diego, and she was the only artist on the bill that I wasn't familiar with. I was instantly blown away by the album, and then her audience banter during that Lilith Fair really set her apart from the other artists. She spoke about being a cypher, and she said to never give your "power" (sexual energy/body, etc.) to just anyone. She just continues to be amazing, not "just" a singer, but a poetess, thinker and philosopher, too.
First disc I got from her was in America's middle school. Her song "Certainly".. I have been in love with her ever since. When she released New Amerykah??!?! Yo!!
Yes I remember that Lilith tour!! She was the standout, amongst some heavy hitters if I'm not mistaken. ❤💝💖💛
Oh Lilith Fair 🙏🏼
She is a musician majikian
He is a very good interviewer. How he matched her energy and did his research. He was very relaxed and utilized the right words and allowed her to elaborate on her thoughts. He seemed to lean into some of her beliefs which builds a genuine chemistry and understanding. This interview allowed it to feel natural and real.
The interviewer is Arie. He ALWAYS does his homework/research.❤
Being creative is not a hobby, it’s a way of life! Thanks Ari for this insightful interview with Erykah. She’s even more beautiful than I thought!!! Wow
My dad gave me her first album way back in the 90’s without knowing who she was or what her music was. As a little white girl in NH I don’t know if I ever would have found her music until decades later. He was a pisces and so am I and I love how some how he was drawn to it and to gift me with it. I’m so grateful the universe spoke to us both in this way. Miss you dad ❤
And Erykah is a Pisces
There are no accidents. Only Serendipity.😇👼🌠🙏
🙏
Honor to your Dad
Love this ❤
This is hands down one of the best interviews I've ever seen. The connection between the two of them and the transparency and joy being given to us who are watching is sacred!
“The universe doesnt give you what you ask for, the universe gives you what you are” sits in my soul
A WORD!
Yes, thank you for pulling that out and putting space around it
That's cool... but doesn't that mean you just watched the first 3 seconds of the 50 minute video? Lol
It seemed like they were both really having a good time talking with each other! The interviewer clearly loves her music and was super prepared and engaged and interested and Erykah was relaxed and generous. It’s a great interview all the way through, it even gets better as they form the energy together. I’ve loved Erykah since the beginning, it’s cool to hear her look back a little bit but to hear the way she thinks about herself as an artist for today at all times. She’s ready to meet the next moment, she’s ready to share everything new she’s learned, she doesn’t need to sit around with a shoebox full of old photos. She’s ready to go make some more art now. Loved this one.
This hit hard. I’m keeping this in mind on what she said right there.
I don’t watch interviews often. This was a beautifully conducted interview with such a genuine energy exchange.
I watched this saying, alright I'll give it a few minutes... I ended up watching it from start to end. One of the most beautiful interviews I've ever experienced from Ari. You just don't see interviews like this on other networks. Thank you!
Thank God for double speed 😂
I planned on watching a few minutes too and spirit was like “naw, keep watching” 🤣🙌🏾💚
I literally said and did the same thing! Quickest 50 minutes of my life lol
What was your favorite thing you took from this?
@@commonsense9848 Don't focus on the past, look forward. Freedom is being you and ok if it doesn't fit the mold of society.
Badu... a queen. Such a regal spirit, love her energy.
She is the quintessential example of "allowing Divine purpose" to shine through. Our gifts cannot be realized unless we follow the pure soul that lies within.❤
She is so right when she said her music was ahead of its time.. this generation is so much more in touch with themselves and they are open to being free to express themselves in unique ways and that’s her!!..
I knew she was a doula & has delivered celebrity children but, I didn't know about her "end of life" support. That's such a beautiful way to live & give your most precious asset (⏰️) to the most vulnerable of souls❣️
She uses her gifts as a gift back to her Creator. Man! If only more people would embrace that approach. What a world it could be.
I agree with you, I grew up listening to her music, much older than she. I enjoyed this interview and she is so smart and talented.
Well stated, ppl would need the awareness to embrace that
We're all connected to the collective consciousness and the creator... Thoughts and prayers are important. It's a challenge to pray for the greedy ignorant humans but, it still needs to be done. I go back and forth.. hehe
All the masculine energy in the world and mother earth isn't happy about it.
Every Black person cant sing and it may take others longer to realize their gift unless something comes along and disrupts their journey.
Not even sure what that means.
Her music is for all the people. The definition of timeless.
Ari Melber...this was an amazing conversation. EXCEPTIONAL job.
She gets me... I feel her... Energy in Harmony.... 🧘🏿
Yesssssssss, I love that. "ENGERY in Harmony" WOW!
Definitely pisces energy.
she gets me.... I feel her....
I llllove this! 🤗
She is highly intelligent
Erykah Badu is wisdom, inspiration, love, respect, black, lady, human... etc... etc... etc!
Ari, great job bro!!!
I'm 54 and I overstood it all, my 3 children now, ages 32-25, overstand it all now. Before her time yet within her time indeed💕
Listen! That chatbot encompassed who she is brilliantly and defined the beginning of the black power movement post-civil rights. Hearing that definition gave me an immediate reflection of Afrocentricity during that time. The empowerment black Americans felt in that era was the consensus of our race taking back who we are as a people. We tapped into where our ancestors came from and defined it, creating black culture going into the next chapter of our history in these United States.
You can tell by his eyes how much he’s been waiting for this moment to interview her. I love how much he honors her space and gives her the space to shine how she does!!!!! I love me some Erykah Badu!
So true! I'll feel honored too, she's such a Queen
I loved that interview. I'm 70 years old and not a real familiar with hip hop or Erykah Badu but have heard of her. I'll have to listen more. Really loved it! And it was refreshing to not talk to much politics.
"it was refreshing to not talk [too] much politics"
Understatement of the decade. So tired of the mire.
She’s been around for nearly 30 years and counting. Have fun. 🔊
She makes neo soul music not hip-hop she does feature on hip-hop music
Badiuzm and Mama's Gun are both INCREDIBLE albums if you're into Neo-Soul
@@WanderingSage24 she's definitely made Hip Hop-Esque records..The Healer prod. by Madlib off New Amerykah is a prime example.
Two, highly intellectual folk. I respect them both for their authenticity. Thank you, Badu & Ari!
This was 4 months ago, and im just now seeing this. Erykah is everything. I love everything about her. So Beautiful inside and out. Asé Asé Asé
I was born in 1977. When I heard Badu in '97 as a scared shitless 19 year old dad to a new born, I became a fan for life. That boy was born in 1997 and he still lives and breathes Badu's music as well as a lot of music that sprung up from it. I'm a musician and so is he. This music has been a major bond for us. When he was a teenager a he plugged me back into playing jazz, neo-soul, R&B and for as much as I initially taught him, I've learned tons from him in the last few years. He introduced me to Hiatus Kaiyote's music which I can't help but hear as a direct descendant. Infinite love and respect to Badu.
Let's update the word "woke" to the word "LOVE" and then we will see who the real "savages" are.
Having a bond so eternally true is a thing of joy I share this too with my daughter
I raised my kids on Badu too! I first resonated with her in the 90s and never let go. My first born was singing Baddduuuuuu since she was a baby. Took her to her concert recently to celebrate her high school graduation. It felt like such a complete circle. Round and round baby. Such a blessing.
So amazing I grew up with her and some young guys I work with introduced me to Hiatus, her voice wow so soulful!
Heavy on the “7”’s… Aligned…
Love Erykah. Simple. Free woman, free heart, free mind.
Thank you Ari.
Define "Free"
nope. She fake.
Thank you "Ari" lol 🤫
@@seedsowersofisrael.4660 I see you keep asking this question all over the internet as if it means something...?!
@@TheBartomon Totally... That's why the AI figured that out immediately from the vast amount of internet content coming to the same conclusion as you. I mean, you even had to give yourself a like to be able to pretend that you are not alone with this assessment - shouldn't that tell you something?
Protect Badula at all costs. ✨
That is one of the most riveting interviews I've seen in a long time. Badu is exceptional 💟
Ari is real. His demeanor doesn’t get weird when talking to people of color. Love his love of great music.
He did use "ain't" and double negatives, which I doubt he does when interviewing everyone.
Had to dumb himself down to talk to her on a level.
I cringed a few times . Like when he quoted Method Man and Master P Omg He also seems like he wants to show that he is "down"
@@corrinaamato8805 Many Jewish guys appreciate hiphop. My cousin is very close to MC Serch and he's like that.
@@eemoogee160 Right, I caught that as well! I think he's trying to sound relatable and it's not necessary. I think he genuinely liked Erykah and did a good job interviewing her.
Her uniqueness is always refreshing in a world full of cookie cutter copy cats. Loved this interview 🌿🌻
Isn't saying the woke is the new black a bit racist?
Im an original but I'm jacking those boots 😢
Her knowledge and style is immense. She's such a humble soul. Just not her personality but her spirit does wonders for us ❤
👏🏾👏🏾Outstanding👏🏾👏🏾 I really didn’t know much about her. I’m totally a fan now! I love her vibe, her message(s), and she’s beautiful. Apparently inside and out! Thanks for this one, Ari!
I am glad she articulated the issue against "wokeism". Most people don't use the word woke and it is something that very obviously came from the black community. It is very clear what anti wokeness is really about, but it will never be admitted. Stay awake and aware, how can that be a bad thing?
It used to mean that but now democrats use that as a way to manipulate culture. I’m not a Republican, I’m just saying that woke has been turned into a commercialized agenda to persuade people into thinking that someone is on their side. When politicians start getting mixed in with the word, you know the word has been stolen because politicians aren’t honest
It's a "dog whistle" word for white people.
Have you seen the state of western culture ?
"Wokeism" got stolen from the black community to use it against them and other minorities. That's lazy
Most people now associate the word woke with soulless corporate narratives with a veil of good intention on the surface, but the narrative and its enforcement in culture practically fail to uplift anyone because the narrative lacks nuance and specific case by case thinking.
I love the fact that if you watch all of her interviews. Her story her answers and thoughts are consistent. She is authentically herself in every space with every person.
So true
BARZ!!!! This was such a great sit down she is one of my favorite artist and I loved when she said you become who you are because it is already implanted in you and it’s up to us to bring that out of ourselves; I loved that statement I am paraphrasing of course but I knew what she was saying. Many blessings to you both.❤
He’s so happy to give this interview. That’s beautiful
"To be confident makes me Brave". Wonderful quote and it describes her to a "T". I love her music from the very beginning. She has evolved so beautifully.
Watching Erykah look at her younger self is like watching a Proud mother watching her daughter emulate her the best she could. She has evolved so much and still looks as young as the day she first blew up! 🖤🙌🏾
She's flawless & s authentic. It's refreshing in a world where so many people want to morph into one single person.
Best interview I’ve seen in a while! A reporter did his homework and you could tell that he loves hip hop and bam a flawless conversation awesome!!
She hasn’t aged a minute. What a great interview with a great artist
agreed...lil' skinny tho...probably just needs to eat more edibles 😁
You’re right. She hasn’t aged… She’s grown and morphed all while staying true to her vibe… I wont call her a legend… yet because by the creators blessing she’s still very much so alive and clearly well! I’m personally grateful that she never allowed the industry to distort and destroy her like so many others. Keep feeding the light love.✨🌻💪🏽
❤ ❤❤
certain people dont crack
I remember when i was stupid af and i thought Badu was “deep” Thought she was connected to a higher consciousness or plane.. I was pretty upset when i realized the truth. She is put there to sell idiots a false concept in hopes they won’t go deeper and start digging past the surface. She is the equivalent to a televangelist begging his followers for money.
Its fitting she sits across from a hollow zionist shill pushing propaganda for war manufacturers and reality manipulators.
This woman is true spirit and energy,, I’m uplifted
Been a while since I've seen a good interviewee and interviewer have a friendly, down to earth conversation😊. I love how she is able to see her past self and explain not only her growth as an artist, but as a human also. ❤
I've never been able to create art without fear being on the back burner. I would love to see what that would look like. Feel like. The creation of art is an act of resistance. This interview has been so great. I love how the birds are chirping and adding to the conversation. Thank you for sharing this with us.
Solange , Erykah and are amongst a small group of black women who are avante garde..thank god they exist! ART is their religion. You can see that Ari absolutely adores her.
The wisdom in her is phenomenal
Awesome interview!🙌 I could just see how she started to relax, unfold and blossom into the conversation from being slightly guarded initially. Ari really soothed and charmed her into her real self💫👏👏 Great job🎉
I'm so glad I stumbled across this video. This was great.
Great interview!!! Loved it. Didn't seem forced and you can tell he's actually a fan of hers and a fan of the culture. An asset to hip hop. 💯
Erykah Badu is cool af. Shouts out to Melber for conducting a very thoughtful and respectful interview with someone truly deserving of such consideration.
You can tell that he just loves her so much and is so excited to talk to her.
This brought me so much joy on so many levels. I feel a glow radiating from the seat of my soul. ❤️
Yes! Yes! Yes!
Appreciate the dialogue. 💚💛🧡
Love Erykah Badu❤! Her music stands the test of time. She is an amazing artist and a wonderful spirit. Thank you for doing this interview Ari. No one could have done it better.
This interview is one of the best I’ve seen!
Don’t lose your innocence that’s where creativity comes from ❤
Many artist are easily duplicated! Not Ms. Badu!! Her music is TIMELESS and her aura is everything ❤
She’s really inspirational as a woman, I hope I can meet her in this lifetime.
Her energy is based purely on love, peace, and freedom. It’s intoxicating.
@LeoKing: Well said !! Badu is a true poet... She's one of my favorite Hip hop artists ❤... Just love her voice....
nice idea
Energy is lights and electric that God gave wisdom unto man to create. I hear God saying she a ignorant fool.
Extremely Intoxicating
nope. She's a psychopathic narcissist - look it up before you clap back.
She’s also a good actor! Look forward to seeing more acting from her.
Well Done Ari - I don't watch anything for an hour - this was Awesome !!!!!!!❤
This interview took me on a journey. Ari is a genius and a treasure. Ericka is .... Wow. She makes you want to be your authentic you.
White people are the only people in the world who'll give more credit to the white interviewer, than the black person he's interviewing! How is a person a "genius" for ASKING questions??!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 You people just HAVE to put yourselves first and higher than black people no matter WHAT, huh? That's a SICKNESS, dude! For real!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Erykah…as authentic as the spelling of her stage name.
All spelling is authentic to the person using it.
Erykah
When I make a comment that so profoundly shows the impracticality of white supremacy and how it's dying as we speak, UA-cam makes it so no one can see it. This is how I KNOW their demonic system is dying along with them, and they know it too. 👋🏾😅🤣👍🏾
What a nice, genuine interview. It makes all the difference in the world when the interviewer is sincerely interested in the guest. Great job, Ari.
This was a GREAT conversation. I have always enjoyed Erykah’s energy. I love how she command her space. Did anyone notice that for a brief moment at 38:40 Erykah had an accent. I had to play it a few times to make sure I wasn’t bugging.
She is amazing. ❤ she was/is ahead of her time. She came out the year I graduated high school and I was in awe from the first time I heard her voice. I am a Texan and will forever be a fan.
She speaks to the soul with so much elegance an grace an I love it her aura is so calming
I appreciate her artistry ❤
This was the best interview i have ever watched. Hands down. It kept me engaged. I felt like i was watching 2 friends have a conversation ❤
She’s just radiant. Transfixing. I needed to hear this conversation at this point in my life, and I’m happy that I clicked on this.
How do you mean ,” In this stage of your life”?
Same ❤
She is the energy of this moment. Completely.
I needed it too.
She’s deep! This was an excellent interview. I really enjoyed the honest conversation and genuine mutual respect shared here!
I was blown away by the AI
analysis of Ms. Badu’s contributions! It’s disconcerting to think an algorithm is capable of recognizing, appreciating, and expressing spiritual concepts so clearly! And it was right on the money!
Precisely. Human writers bring way too much bias especially when describing Black artists. They make fun of depth in artists rather than inquiring more deeply.
@@mcclendonreport True, a computer doesn’t get bogged down with personal bias. I guess that’s part of what surprised me though. My limited understanding of AI is that it sources information found on the internet (created by humans). So how does it avoid repeating the bias of it’s sources? Amazing times we are living in!
@@Blackbird_Singing_in_the-Night A.I. has the advantage of looking at ALL sides. Humans struggle with that. To be sure, hundreds of thousands (maybe millions) of African-Americans - and a smattering of others - knew that the eccentric Erykah Badu was a seer, a prophetess and an empath from day ONE.
I completely agree
@@mcclendonreport Well, I did. She's always impressed me with her wit, wisdom and compassion.

I have found a new love and respect for Erykah Badu. Can never get enough of her wisdom. Thank you Ari for hosting this incredible interview. ❤❤
Ari, in my opinion your interview with Erykah Badu was a masterful, human, in-depth, meaningful and thoughtful educational exchange of real communication/conversation between two people. I sincerely appreciate your talent and gift of genuine curiosity, vulnerability and your willingness to learn about individual people. I appreciate the way that you research and use your creativity to ask extraordinary questions that help us get to get acquainted with the person that you’re talking to. Thank you

The 50 minutes just flew by in this beautiful synergy! I wish to be this engaging in conversation and to connect to more people in this way. They didn't use "ums" and they looked each other directly in the eyes the entire time! I enjoyed the energy and I also loved what Erykah observed about how her music was ahead of its time and how her generation didn't quite get it but now people in their 20s and 30s really appreciate her because of the spiritual wave that has elevated consciousness in this last decade. It's incredible! and she's incredibly blessed to have been given that task to express that before it was popular.

New respect for Ari with this interview ♥️
This has to be the best interview (of an artist) that I have seen in my 55 years on this planet. The energy and respect between the two was palpable. Outstanding job Ari...👌🙌
I couldn't agree more. I'm loving the comments as well. So much love, peace and harmony even in the comments as the love and energies spread from the video into our lives and unitedly collectively connect us and vibrate through the universe rippling mirrors on mirror through one another.
