    olds with letter A before the serial number, what year of manufacture from that letter addition

      Rogerio, the A serial numbers were the last Olds made; it might have been after Olds was taken over by another company. Here's the site I go to for a lot of Olds info...

    Great review, Jonathan! I bought a Ambassador off eBay a couple weeks ago and ended up having to return it. It was a model from the seventies not an LA model unfortunately. The seller said the valves were very good but in actuality they were not. I know there's plenty of ambassadors out there for sale but they're pretty old horns and I bet it's hard to find one with good valves and compression isn't it?

    • @JonathanMilam1
      @JonathanMilam1  3 роки тому

      clean leadpipes and livable compression seem always to be major issues with vintage horns, I think. Getting a case is always nice for value, and a mathching mouthpiece is the icing on the cake. :)

    Jonathon you must try an Olds Opera - seriously, it's an amazing and very underrated horn!

      I thought I was going to try one out a few months ago. But, when I was in the area, the guy didn't want to communicate. I've tried a few times... Hasn't happened yet. :)

      @@JonathanMilam1 I had one for a while (badly restored but a nice player) they are an extra large bore and can be a bit energy sapping but because they are so open they play with an amazing flexibility and a huge and dark tone. I imagine a bit like playing a Flip Oakes Wild Thing or something with that concept in mind. Anyway, a completely different experience to the ML or L horns most of us encounter.

    Hi again Jonathan. I have an Olds Ambassador that's an early Fullerton with the pinky finger RING. My horn is from around 1958 and has the exact same specs as the Los Angeles Ambassadors. Later on Olds changed the specs and the pinky finger HOOK horns were born. I love my EARLY Fullerton as much as any LA factory Ambassador I've had...as they are exactly the same. By the way, your audio levels are perfect. Keep making these interesting videos.

    • @JonathanMilam1
      @JonathanMilam1  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, yours and mine are no doubt very similar. I tried a quick search and am not sure when the LA factory moved to Fullerton. It could be mine is an early Fullerton horn, but made with a bell from LA. It's a great horn! I've got 4 Olds horns, and this one is for sale because I can't keep all of them. My wife has been very nice, but I'm on dangerous ground; I think I have 15 horns in the house (and two flutes). So... Some have to go. :) Thanks for commenting, Mark! :)

      @@JonathanMilam1 I hear ya. I have about 30 trumpets and cornets and most will be for sale once the pandemic is under control. I also play keyboards too. I have older professional boards that I gave gigged with, plus amps, drum machines, PA systems etc. Way too much gear.
      Of all the trumpets I have bought over the years, I can't find one that suits me as well as my mid sixties Getzen Eterna "Doc Severinsen" model.
      I'm using a good old Bach 3-C as my main mp for both trumpet and cornet, but I also have several others for different musical needs. I'll gave to check you out at the TH. I think I've seen your name on there.

    I play a 70's fullerton one, from the period after which people say the quality has faded. I'm really curious to how big the difference is between the same model with almost 2 decades in between them.

    • @JonathanMilam1
      @JonathanMilam1  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, that would be fun to see. So much depends on how the horns were take care of... Mine is 67 years old! :)

      @@JonathanMilam1 also a good thing to consider indeed! I'm contemplating upgrading in the future from my ambassador to a different olds. I was thinking of an Olds recording, I'm looking for a nice, deep and rich tone but with possibility of some sharpness as well, but I just very much am attracted to the appearance of the recording, plus the trigger is something I'd prefer over a regular ring and stem. But you made me consider the Mendez as well. Any words of advice you could give on this? How does the trigger ring compare to regular rings and what do you think is the darkest sounding horn that can still be bright?

    • @JonathanMilam1
      @JonathanMilam1  3 роки тому +2

      I think my Mendez is a little darker than my Recording, but with vintage horns I'm never sure if they play the way they do because of the way they've been handled and treated, or what. I'll do more with my Mendez after I get it fixed up a bit. It has two braces that need to be resoldered, and a huge bend in the middle of the bell. Frankly, I'm not sure it'll sound the same after the repairs. The valve action on the Mendez is as good as I've ever felt. It was a top line horn; I think they had their best craftsmen working on these. Very well put together. The Recording isn't bright, but brighter than the Mendez. It has a very sweet sound, too.

      Thanks, Rick; good to hear from you. This one I actually found online. It was a small music store, and they'd advertised on Reverb.com. The horn was listed as an "American" (the logo is hard to read), but I recognised the finger ring and the bracing. :) It was quite dirty, but now it's all cleaned up and shiny. :)

    I asked John Snell at Bob Reeves what he thought of ambassadors and to quote him “they’ll need work given the age, but no doubt they’re built like a tank.”

    • @JonathanMilam1
      @JonathanMilam1  3 роки тому

      I think vintage horns, far more than newer horns, vary from horn to horn. I've had 3 Olds Special trumpets (all vintage, obviously). One was fantastic, two were great looking horns, but I just wasn't able to do much with them. I've had 3 Olds Special cornets; one is with me and I'll probably never let it go, the other two were ok. This Ambassador is a good player, with a GOOD general sound. I've heard they're 'built like a tank'. This one doesn't seem to much different from the Special model at all. Different bell material and different leadpipe (I think the Special and the Super share the same leadpipe), but the two models otherwise seem quite similar. The Ambassador sure seems more common though, don't they? :) By the way, thanks for commenting.

    I just purchased a 1955 Olds Ambassador Trumpet with zero dents. Valves are slow, and slides are stuck, but that is a minor thing. Do you know if there was one specific mouthpiece that came with the trumpet that year?

    • @JonathanMilam1
      @JonathanMilam1  3 роки тому

      Congrats, Tim. These can be really nice players. The Olds 3 was very common, I think. They’re readily available at EBay. They’re fairly shallow and pretty small drill hole. I was surprised by how small they were. A Bach 7C or 3C would be much larger cup size; a Reeves 41M, which has a pretty shallow cup and tight backbore (great commercial sound) might be similar. Also like a Warburton S or Schilke 11A4A. With a bigger cup, like a 7 C, my Ambassador gets a gorgeous sound. Again, congrats! :)
