Much is written about the ethos of Olds from their golden era. "Built on the same bell mandrels as the premium Recording models & featuring extremely reliable valve sections, the Ambassador line was intended to reflect Foster Reynolds’ commitment to providing high-quality, dependable horns at an affordable price." Whether top of the line Mendez or student level Ambassador, all were crafted to the same high standards & specs. I own Olds horns from both LA & Fullerton ranging from 1948 to 1963 & from Ambassador to Recording models (in the future I'll lay down the money for a top line Mendez.) There is slight variation of trim & build but all of these horns have a unique sound but & are equally great. I believe the decisive factor for Olds quality decline was the departure of Zigmant "Zigg" Kanstul from Olds in 1972. The instruments after that time began to diminish in quality. But there are still good ones found even in those years.
May I inquire what your mouthpiece choice was for this demo. Sounds like maybe a Bach 3C with a nice spread of edge as well as a whispery sweetness.Thank you!
To be honest, I don't remember exactly. For the upper register I probably used a Warburton 7ESV, and for everything else you could be right: Could have been a Bach 3C.
Your assessment of the Ambassador was nice and CLOSE BUT there is one SIGNIFICANT miss!! There is a HUGE difference in the Olds Ambassador that were made in the Los Angeles Plant VS the Fullerton which was where they moved after the LA plant burned down. The Ambassador you mention above that Roy played? Was an LA horn. The Ambassador that Lee Morgan played and Blue Mitchell and Chet had one for a bit and Uan Rasey? These were all LOS ANGELES horns....so made between 1947 and 1955 (actually unti;l; 58 as they saved many horns and the a lot of the raw materials from the fire) so FOR SURE after 1958 the Oldss Ambassador we a STUDENT horn. Now here is the GREAT part, while Olds marketed the Ambassador as a "Student horn" from 1947 1955 the FACTS are that it was a PROFESSIONAL TRUMPET. See Olds was a Single tolerance shop, meaning FA Reynolds or was the GM at the time demanded that ALL Olds horns be made with the same materials, specs, measurement and tolerances. So the Ambassador was made out of the SAME brass, to the same Tolerances, by the SAME craftsman as ALL of the their pro horns, they only differences were the bracing, the Ferrules, water keys. So why did the LOS ANGELES Olds Amby as I all it play so well?? because its a PRO HORN!! As a matter of fact the Ambassador is actually the MENDEZ! in its base form. For the past 3 years I have been building a custom horn using LA Ambys and getting them braced with higher end braces, I replace water keys and rings as well as caps and buttons. These are some if the finest trumets available today WHY? because I am starting with one of the best Pro horns ever made and MAKING IT A PRO HORN!!!! Hahaha Great job on the channel. If you want to check out my horns go to Facebook SVT Innovation or facebook.com/ManWithTheHorns/
Is that why I like my 58 so much? Hahahah...it was a fullerton but looked the part of a los angeles. I just wish they didn't use those damn hardware store nuts on the mouthpiece reciever. I was thinking of filing it round :)
Got this one for my collection, really a big player!
