使用は控えた方が良いかもしれません。柄材が軟らかそうに見えましたが何材ですか？
日本では樫の木が最も多く使われますが、タモや桜等でも良いと思います。堅くて粘りのある材じゃないと簡単に折れてとても危険です。力の掛かる向きに対する木目の方向性も重要で、間違った切り出し方をした材は樫でも折れます。
柄が折れた時、鉈に比べて斧は何十倍も危険ですから十分ご注意下さい。斧頭を入れる為の切り出しは、なだらかにしないと角になっている斧ヘリ付近に応力が集中してそこから折れやすくなります。
