    Enjoying JTY informative videos - instrumental in deciding to get a 450L - the one I got has the Nomad 20L tank already installed. One thing that is bananas about the Nomad tank install is the two rear machine screws - they're like 4mm hex button head so you have to thread this screw through the gas tank bracket and into the mounting bracket, which is a really tedious maneuver in a very cramped space where it is almost immpossble not to cross the threads on assembly. Once you get the screw started, then you need to tighten the screw using an Allen wrench by turning it like 1/8 turn at a time - so to tighten this you have to fidget with that hex key for about 50 turns - arrrgh. I could not accept that design so instead I got some compatible bolts, cut the heads off (essentially fabricating a small length of all-thread). Then I used red thread-locker to glue the new studs into the threaded hole in the frame-side bracket, Now the tank can be lowered onto the stud and a nut can easily be threaded onto the stud by hand and then tightened with a 10mm wrench easy peasy. I took pictures but not sure how to share here.

    looks pretty good and practical for all situations. if you are doin a short ride and want less weight just put less fuel in. this gives you the option of long rides and can rid a guy of range anxiety

    Aussie product. Yours might be the best and most useful review out there. When I was considering a new adv bike, the lack of fuel range for the Honda was the biggest drawback. The owners couldn’t give me any useful info on fit at the time and I went for a KTM. Pity that Safari never made a tank.

      @@JohnTYoung Yes, it was a close thing between Red and Orange. The deciding issues were the fueling problem/cost to fix, no big tank option and the initial crazy overpricing here in Australia. The CRF can be had new for approx $3000 less than the initial new price, which killed the bike as a genuine competitor to the KTM. Honda should be paying you a retainer for the good work you are putting in.

    Your bike looks good, and as usual, another good video. Can't say I am a big fan of huge aftermarket tanks. I have done a few BDR trips now and never needed more than the stock 3.6 gallons on my 2019 KTM 690, but at the same time, I am extra careful not to pass a fuel stop either. I fully understand the peace of mind you have with the larger tank. I carry two 30 oz MSR fuel bottles [1/2 gallon] that I stash in the pockets of my Moscow kit. Additionally, I carry a Giant Loop 1-gallon bladder and only fill it up as needed, and that is to say, only when I am heading into an extra long stretch of dirt - so a total of 1.5 gallons extra onboard as needed. Oh yes, it's kind of a pain strapping and storing the portable fuel onto the bike, but the payoff for me is the ability to ditch all that stuff and zip around on my lean KTM machine for those one day & weekend rides. Thank you and take care John.

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  4 роки тому

      Thanks for the insights! I too did just as you described and made it work. But I've got to tell ya that the tank itself only weighs an extra two pounds and carries 2 gallons as well as it carries 3 gallons as well as it carries 5 with no thoughts as to how to strap those extra 2 or 3 gallons on the bike. Stripped down for trail riding or loaded up for ADV riding, it's the same bike. I like Fuel Fiends 2L bottles, by the way. They fill up the entire space in the Reckless' 80 extra pockets and can take a beating.

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  4 роки тому +1

      That did NOT include that weight. I have been running a Adventure Spec rad guard before, so the "extra" weight of the Nomad guard would have been offset anyway. I can say that, because it uses so little hardware and uses the tank itself, the Nomad guard is lighter than most others. Good question!

      If anyone else is curious, I swapped the IMS 3 gal tank into my bike today. The factory tank stripped, but with the little plastic shroud over the top of it under the fuel cap still on it, weighed 2lbs less than the IMS tank. So I gained about 10 pounds more including the 8 pounds of a gallon of fuel. It's already such a heavy bike, probably won't be noticeable.

    I'm thoroughly shocked you got 100miles on the stock tank. Didn't you get the Vortex ECU? Riding around the forest in sand I get around 27.8mpg according to the bike, which matches the fuel usage. With stock tank I get about 45-50 miles before the light comes on, using a sand map in the Vortex, and I figure I have another 15 miles or so since it's about a half gallon. I guess I could hit 60 miles, but I would feel like I'm pushing it. With the IMS tank and the way I ride, I'm hoping to get 70 miles before the light comes on, with about another 10 miles of range. I'm not sure when the light will come on with that tank, and how much will be left when it does. I will test that and see what it does so I know for the future. I don't really ride my bike on the street too much except around the neighborhood, so I venture that's probably why my fuel mileage is low. I'm actually going on a dual sport ride next weekend so I'll be curious to see how my fuel economy changes.

    Hi John. Love the vids and mods. One of the reasons I bought my 450L. Just curious, where do you get your stickers/decals. Ive wanted to remove the white and make it red and black and then I saw your later videos and you did exactly that! Looks great! Tank worth it?

    Hi John,
    Great video as always. Also, as always, I bought the same Nomad tank as you. However, I can't get the fuel pump to seal correctly. If I shake the tank, the borders of the seal are very slowly getting wet. There is just the tiniest amount of fuel that keeps seeping through. I tried another O-ring (of my friend's CRF) but it still seeps. Did you check your seal thoroughly before installing the tank, because it's hardly noticeable. I wonder if I can just leave it like this.
    Thanks for your advice.

    • @JohnTYoung
      @JohnTYoung  2 роки тому

      Mine does not leak or seem wet in any way. Have you tried lubing the oring with a bit of grease or even fuel to keep it from rolling or twisting when it gets installed? Have you checked the hole and the outside of the pump housing for cracks or anything? Sorry if I am stating the obvious. I hope you figure it out!

    • @wouterdevos803
      @wouterdevos803 2 роки тому

      @@JohnTYoung Thanks for your very quick reply John! I did put some blue grease around the edges of the opening and on the O-ring. I think I'm being overzealous because I wouldn't have noticed the seal getting just a little bit moist if I would've installed the tank right after installing the fuel pump.
