    Dave - this is a terrific video! While I always look forward to, and enjoy, your full edits - I especially appreciate the videos that focus on a particular set of functions/actions in the TK9 plugin. I have used the Orton and Smart Orton actions on some of my images but your demonstration of how to tweak things is going to be very helpful. Seems to me that the "Make it Glow" action is similar in some ways the Orton effect actions. Could you comment on this?

    • @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly
      @thejoyofeditingwithdavekelly  6 місяців тому

      Thanks Steve. For me, Make It Glow gives a subtle hint of glow. It adds a nice softening without effecting the shadows and highlights and also slightly warms the image, a great little action.

    • @TonyKuyper
      @TonyKuyper 6 місяців тому +2

      The Make-It-Glow action in the TK9 Combo/Cx panel is based on color. It blurs and accentuates the colors in the the image. If you have a black and white image, for example, Make-It-Glow won't do much because there is no color to make the glow with. Orton Effect, on the other hand, blurs the actual image pixels, not just the color, but luminosity also, to create its effect. You will still see an Orton Effect on a black and white image as a result. If all you're looking for is a color glow, then Make-It-Glow is something that might be quite useful. However, to get more of an ethereal glow, Orton will probably work better.

    Dave, another great video! Like some others, I am a BIG fan of the TK9 Blend If panel to "tone down" the effect - using the taper sliders in the middle. It's such a quick, easy method and works great. I also, btw, love the Nik Effects Classical Soft and/or Glamour Glow & then the Blend If panel. That leaves the possibility for a Mask for specific areas and of course, the overall Opacity. I have recently gotten into the habit of using one or more of the above on almost all my images - so many options! Thanks again & hope you have a great New Year!

    Thanks for a great tutorial on this effect Dave. It has really opened my eyes how to adjust it with more accuracy. Previously I would use Blend If to remove the effect from the highlights and/or shadows. The other thing I used quite a lot was to put a black mask on the group and then brush in the effect where I wanted it. For instance in the first image I would use little to no effect on the tree trunks and confine the effect just to the leaves. Thanks again.

    Hi Dave, I had largely forgotten about the Orton functionality on the TK panel, mainly I think as when I tried it I didn't try much in the way of adjustments. This video has really put this back on my list of things to consider when processing an image. I had a go at further adjusting the Orton using the Blend If button on the TK9 panel and that looks useful for subtle adjustments and I know how you love the blend if button 🤣

    Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! I often experiment trying Orton on an image, but only use the plain Orton action and then adjust the opacity. This video opens up a new huge potential for its use. Already have a number of images in mind to give it a go on. Great start to 2024.

    Great overview Dave. I like the Orton effect and have sometimes struggled to adjust the look to my taste. Now that I understand how all the layers interact future adjustments will be more to my taste and I will be using the Orton effect more frequently. I like wildlife and landscape photography. I have found the Orton effect to be useful in both and have been recently using the Orton effect more in wildlife work. When I mask out the subject totally or less and apply more effect to the background it helps the subject jump out and people are attracted to the soft backgrounds. That includes already out of focus backgrounds. Thanks again and keep those videos coming please!

    One trick I like to use is to manually erase the gaussian layer along the hard edges with a soft eraser brush. This keeps the dreamy effect while still fooling the eye into believing the overall image is still sharp. I learned this while doing portrait and fashion photography, but I find it works just as well with landscapes.

    • @TonyKuyper
      @TonyKuyper 6 місяців тому

      Hmm, I wonder if the edge masks in TK9 would be useful in this regard? I would be relatively easy to make one and then paint black on the edges on a layer mask on the Orton Effect group to keep the blur off the edges. Interesting idea.

    Hello Dave! This was a masterpiece tutorial on this edition of TK Fridays. I really like the Orton Effect, but I never got a full grasp of its use until today. This was fantastic. In my case, I was using the calculator to tweak the effects and apply them on certain portions of my images. But your technique shines. I don't know if you've used the trusty calculator tool when applying your Orton Effects on your images. I'd love to know your opinion on this. But anyhow, thanks so much for this edition. Happy editing!😁

    Great video Dave as usual. If my memory is correct, I thought you did a previous video for Smart Orton where you used a specific formula to determine how much blur to start with.

    • @datstheone1
      @datstheone1 6 місяців тому +1

      TK9 now calculates the blur based on megapixel size of image. I think this automates the calculation Dave used in TK8.

  • @julianpaxton5750
    @julianpaxton5750 6 місяців тому

    Thanks Dave. I wasn't aware of the Nick Page Orton. It looks very flexible. Do you sharpen before or after applying the Orton effect? It seems counter-intuitive to apply a blur and then to sharpen it.
