My Profile:
www.mattstefanf...
I was born and raised in Chicago, but after working 12 years in the financial Industry regulating the futures and options markets at the CME/CBOT I decided to pursue my passion fishing professional tournaments and left my full time corporate job. At that point, I moved to Junction City, WI with my wife Sara and two boys Hank and Duke. I've been fishing professionally since 2011 and full-time since 2015. I've qualified for seven MLF Championships and won over a half million in tournament winnings at the professional level.
I had to stop fly fishing for bass due to wrist injury that happened after 20 years of fly fishing. I'm using gear now and catching river bass on hair jigs. I am able to drift 1/16 oz hair jigs made with magnum bunny strips. My three biggest smallies this year were caught on the bunny strip jigs. For light jigs, the right rod is critical. Anyone that is interested should look at Matt's UA-cam video on building and fishing with a rod made with an MHX SJ9000-2 rod blank. After watching Matt's video, I had a rod made using that blank. It is a blast to catch big smallies in current on that rod.
I've been tying a short leader with a small hairjig on the tail hook of my poppers and to my surprise I've caught bass, crappie and bluegill on the jig mainly
Glad you like it!
Gabe, I have probably watched every parish mission talk that you have posted over the years on UA-cam and this one is one of the best, thank you!!! As you were closing and talked about how you have to die to do God's will and if you do not die, he can not live, it brought to mind the last words from St. Arcadius, a 4th century martyr, that I had just read during my prayer time this morning speaking to those who were putting him to death he said, "You who have been present at this bloody tragedy, learn that all of the torments seem as nothing to one who has an everlasting crown before his eyes. Your gods are not gods; renounce their worship. He alone for whom I suffer and die is the true God. To die for Him is to live."
After over 50 years of fishing store-bought baits, I finally decided to get a nice jig-tying vise and lots of materials to tie my own.
Last week I hammered the bass on a homemade inline spinner with feathers/maribou and tinsel on the treble hook. the fluid motion of the maribou was irresistible to the bass. The inline spinner gave the maribou a life-like motion & appearance. This is why larger Rooster Tails are made even for professional Bass anglers.
Thanks
Hairjigs just simply work. They're my go-to on bedding bass that just like to look at the bait.
Very cool
Many days fishing maribu crappie jigs, I catch more bass than panfish. Sounds like a new possible core tackle product!
Not any time soon haha
I make my own hair jigs! Works great on Smallies and Pike
Very cool!
I've been trying the addicted brand of hair jigs lately. Caught a few but waiting for the water to get a little colder
Thanks for the top notch information Matt good job as usual
I stocked up on some hair jigs last year. And I'd be lying if I said I used them even once this year
Great video Matt on jigs I have to throw more out there don't give enough time in them 👍🏻
Thanks 👍
They are expensive, some of them that I’m interested in for largemouths but at nearly 20$ I just can’t buy and you know you’re gonna loose some. I mean I will go into the Cumberland river and man, you’re gonna lose a lot of rigs in there. Love your videos Matt, keep up the great content!
Hey Matt when you say cold water what kind of temp ranges are we talking about? Are they primarily only a cold water option or can you fish them in warmer water also. Would like to hear more discussion about when, where and time of year to throw the for bass, thanks.
Below 60’isncold water
One of my best bud's ties jigs those are my favorite there free.😀👍👍👍👍👍
Haha
My Grandfather introduced me to hair jigs for largemouth, smallmouth and perch on Lake Erie 70+ years ago and they are still great. Used all over the world. Couldn't agree with you more.
Thanks
I’ve been trying some small multi species marabou jigs and they are absolute multi species killers! If anyone needs some let me know
Thanks for sharing
1/32 Lindy little nipper tipped with a 1" gulp minnow. That little bait will catch fish. Have to get the right rod, reel and line though.
Yep
I like it...I use them in rivers but never lakes...So I will have to get that going
Give them a try
I use the long winters to tie my own as well. That maribou drop shot hook u talked about in other videos is a good one too
Yep
Good video Matt, they even make tiny ones for trout😊
Yes they do
Stop giving away my secrets
Sorry
Awesome vid matt. I tie them all the time.
Right on!
Is not ezy to make Marabou jig but has been a very expensive habit or hobby whatever you think your buying habits are. Do you buy stuff and don't use them much or not at all. I have jigs I've made and not used yet. Deer, horse, ELK and others is different Flo in the water. Just thinking about.
Yep lots of materials to choose from
Started tying my own a couple months ago.
Tie some on an unweighted hook and drop shot them and see what you think about it. Good luck 👍
Awesome
@itllkeal thanks have done a couple darn toothy critters loved them.
Thanks Matt
You bet
So what your really trying to say is become a fly fisherman 😉...
Haha
