      Glad you enjoyed the video. It was a fun process, though will say it was a bit less forgiving than the alum tanning (though nice to be able to use a natural method and it made for nicer leather as well)

    Egg tanning, that's the way I was taught. Beautiful furs.

      Thank you. The egg tanning was nice in some ways and a pain in others. It felt like we really had to be on time with it (which is something we are sooooo not good at lol) there was little forgiveness with it.

      😃 I am not sure what else to film for rabbit stuff. We need to have people fill out a questionnaire of what they would like to learn.

    Something we haven’t done. Tanning hides, with wild game like bear and deer we’d like to try it. 👍🏻 you guys do so much!

      It is a fun project to try forsake. A bear one would be amazing. I remember when I (Steph) was a kid, my parents friend had a bear rug... it was wonderful.

    You mentioned doing Mink Oil for Sealing. How did you do that? Can these Tanning Methods be applied to all Furs? This is the 1st Video of yours I've seen. Very well done. Thank you for showing each Step and Varuations of Techniques so well ❤ Blessings

    Do you have to stretch it , does it still work if you don't stretch it?

    • @HickorycroftFarm
      @HickorycroftFarm  Місяць тому

      yes it does have to be worked we stretched by hand as it dried and it worked well enough but it goes very hard if you don't "break" the hide during drying.

    Have you tried to smoke hides to waterproof them?

    • @HickorycroftFarm
      @HickorycroftFarm  Рік тому +1

      we actually haven't yet but do have a friend who has (and from what I understand it's worked pretty well). Certainly something for us to try at some point in the future.

      We hate to waste any of what we produce here and for many years we disposed of these beautiful furs. Now we are collecting a pile of tanned ones to eventually create something amazing 😆. Welcome to the channel and glad to have you here.

      Thanks so much. I actually like how the egg tanned furs turned out more then the chemical tanning, but the chemical one was far more forgiving.

    Great video. But could you please tell me how you look after the fur from the get go. I’ve watched a lot of how to videos on processing rabbits but none have actually shown what to do with the fur other then to throw it in the freezer. Is there things you can do with the fur to have it prepared better for when you do go to treat the fur for use? Like do you cut it open and lye it flat to freeze? Do you wash it or flesh it before freezing? I’ve see in one video to roll up in a ball to freeze. So when I pull it out of freezer do I just defrost or soak straight in water or something else? I would like to know what you do with the fur straight from processing the rabbit please. Thanks Deb from Sydney Australia 😊 🇦🇺

    I assume you raise rabbits.
    So do you use furs all year or just winter furs

    I tried egg tanning a fur, but I messed up and the fur was coming off.

    • @HickorycroftFarm
      @HickorycroftFarm  2 роки тому +1

      We had that on one that we did. It was our error though. We think it was because we let it dry out to much during the tanning process.

  • @micahallen4699

    What is the end result? Who are you selling the furs to?

    • @HickorycroftFarm
      @HickorycroftFarm  Рік тому +3

      we don't sell any of the furs at the moment so just doing it for our own projects. Which to be honest we haven't really processed any of the tanned hides into anything other than a nice little rabbit "rug" lol. They are super soft though and have been storing really well. To be honest we find most of the hides are not quite in good enough shape to tan when we process rabbits so its only a very small number that we typically do in a given year (so the stockpile is only slowly growing).
