My 510 kind of died, would you recommend the 530? Thoughts so far? Oh, I have a stages power meter and my old chest HR monitor. I don't jump, except if I make a big mistake. Any thoughts, more, that you can share?
Definitely recommend the 530 for power meter users. I ride with hr monitor and powertap hub. Every ride the 530 is calculating Vo2max, lactate threshold, FTP, recovery time and maybe some other stats. For MTB, it does some calculations about grit, flow, jump distance and hang time. I've heard that the accuracy of the jump calculations is lackluster, but I haven't tried it out
Glad i found this video. I have tried to research about jump score and how high it could be. My max score was around 110 and 0.6s air time. Your video gives me some sense of it now and show that i still can work on it a lot. Curious What is your longest air time and jump score?
For an mtber would you choose the 530 over a wahoo element bolt? My trainer setup is all wahoo, and I like their stuff but this jump data really intrigues me haha.

I really like your channel and I’m also an avid mountain biker and data geek. I’ve been using Polar HRM watches since the S710 to my latest watch the M600. Unfortunately the Polar M600 is not completely compatible with the iPhone iOS updates and Wear OS. It’s a shame but life goes on. So now I’m on the hunt for a new HRM and possible cycling computer instead. Btw I just followed you on Strava, 2019 I biked 2027 miles but was traveling for work, 2020 I hope to make 2500. Many of my miles are on my fully rigid single Seven Sola single speed mountain bike.
Very nice review. One thing that I haven't yet been able to find from fruitless searches on the internet and video reviews is if it can record and present say Strava and Trailfork data together on the same ride and switch between profiles/screens to make it a deeper more useful device device?
@@DesFit please what mount u r using in this video?I have a trail bike and this look perfect. But i have not enough space. And this looks like perfect solution.Thx nice review.
I’m buying the edge 530 and was wondering why would you need a speed sensor? I want the cadence sensor for my gravel rig and some extra mounts so I can use on my mountain bikes too but just don’t understand why speed sensor bundle is needed?
I spoke to Garmin about this as well. When riding in dense areas off-road, you might lose the GPS signal. Even without the speed sensor, the unit will determine the speed without a GPS signal. It will just a average the speed based on distance traveled over time when the GPS signal is reaquired. The sensor however would log the exact detailed speed while out of GPS range so it would be more accurate.
The screen size on the 530 is awfully nice when it comes to navigation and other areas. Plus, I was one of the unlucky ones to have a less than stellar experience with the touchscreen on the 820. If you choose the 530 you’ll have a device that will be future proof for a while.
Hi Des, used this video reallyy well in my purchase process and just got mine in the mail. However I saw this sleek way how you mount it to your stem, however my stem is too short and thick to fit the mount with the strings. How did you manage to get it entered so nicely? Cheers from Holland!
Getting it to fit just right with a particular stem setup can take some trial and error. I tend to like these mounts for MTB which mounts it in a nice position and you don't need to mess around with the elastic ties. geni.us/KKkP Thanks!
hi desfit, just to confirm that the edge 530 has an accelerometer to gauge the jumps, and ride flow. did you use the speed and cadence sensor with the computer, or just the computer only?
@DesFit If I have a garmin Fenix 6, which also has all of these metrics baked in, is the Edge 530 worth the purchase? I tend to mount my watch on the handlebars whilst using a chest strap hr monitor. Thinking of doing more structured workouts outside and only have a dumb trainer.
You're correct - it's basically the same functions as your Fenix. It may just come down to convenience and usability having the additional device. For workouts though, the Edge would probably be easier to use due to the larger screen.
@@DesFit Thanks for the reply, I made the purchase. Looking at your video now again, what mount do you use on your mtb, since the out front mount supplied will be used on my road bike and the small o-ring mount with the 530 can't fit on my shorter stem (even with the spacer). I don't want to mount it to the side and prefer the more "clean" look. Thanks again.
Looks great! I like the alarm feature. It won’t prevent theft but at least it gives you one more tool in the tool box to know something is moving and it may be your prized bike....🤣. I really like the 530
I was about to buy the 130. But have concerns about the battery life. Now comes the 530 and I wonder if he would not be the better choice. To navigate I have used the Oregon 600 so far. Does the 530 have a much longer running time than the 130? Which one would you prefer? I drive mostly mountain bike.
I was also considering the 130 but the actual battery life is putting me off. So I'm inclined to buy the 530 because of the better battery life, built-in compass and overall better features. Especially since the runtime can be extended beyond 20 hours using battery saving features during a ride. Realistically, I don't need to be looking at the screen all the time, in fact i rarely do look at the screen when not navigating. The 530 isn't THAT much more expensive, especially given the amount of extra features and much better mapping capabilities. A compass is great when navigating trails and being able to plan routes in the device gives you more choice in terms of extending your ride beyond the original plans (or cutting it shorter when needed). What I haven't been able to determine is whether people reporting around 6 hours of batter life are using GPS+Glonnass/galileo, or just GPS. Because my experience with another device (Garmin Instinct) was that just GPS could get you 14+ hours of battery life easily, while turning on Glonass would cut more than half of that away.
@Des, where were you riding when it picked up the jump data you showed in Garmin connect? It looks like you averaged 19.6 ft / 6 m per jump with a longest of 31 ft / 9.3 m. That seems unlikely, do you think it's accurate?
I'm still doing more testing on it before I can say whether or not it's accurate but here's some info on the jumps at Erie Singletrack. The first jump that you see in the intro, which is one of the shorter ones, is about 11 feet from tip to tip, but then add a bit more distance since you're landing on the back side of the jump. The longest two jumps on that same line are about 20-22 feet long from tip to tip, again, adding a bit more distance for landing on the back side. Then add the variable of if I did or did not overshoot the landing ;) I have more testing to do plus I have some additional questions for Garmin in regards to how this data is being collected and measured but I'll have all of that good stuff in the final review.
DesFit when you say tip to tip, you mean base to base of the table? Or were they doubles? Looking at that footage, it doesn’t look 11 feet long but video is always deceiving. Either way nice shredding. Never knew you were a good rider jumping and all! I first found you with Apple Watch reviews ;)
A question if I may - How long does the unit take to boot up? This is something I never see mentioned in the reviews and when I was testing Sigma ROX 12, I was very unpleasantly surprised how long it takes to power on.

They can be either used as shown on the video, or you can turn it around and have the unit above your stem, which is useful for mountain bikes which tend to have a long reach and short stem (= can't use a typical stem mount and having the unit in front of the bars puts it too far).
Awesome review, Des! Question on the jump data. Most of your jumps were all under a second hangtime. But the distance for each was a lot... like 20-30feet! I don’t see how one can jump 30ft but it only takes .6 of a second. Any ideas? Mainly wondering about the accuracy.
If you look at the chart, each jump also states how fast he was moving through the air. At 20mph you're going roughly at the speed of 29ft/s so yes, you'll cover that distance in a very short time.
All i want is something i can view my location on the map, and find my way back with breadcrumb on. I have not seen too much info about how this device would function as a navigation gps. Also, is it waterproof?
I like the button interface on the Elemnt but it doesn't have as many features as the 530. The Elemnt has been out for a while so the software is mature and I have had zero bugs with it, which is something I can't necessarily say about the 530.
