  • *WARNING* DO NOT WATCH THIS SCENE IF YOU HAVE NOT SCENE THE MOVIE *WARNING*
    This scene is by request also. This is one of my favorite scenes as it sheds light to why Ennis has all this fear.
    This is also the scene were they are together on Mountain again for the first time in 4 years.
    Enjoy.

    You know, Ennis gave up their happiness and they were together only for few days a year, because he did not want them to end up together like that, like his dad showed him. And Jack ended up like that anyway, even tho he did all he could to avoid it. That must have crashed Ennis's soul to pieces.

    I'm usually not a fan of romantic movies. I actually hate them, most of the time. And one my friend, who's a great fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, almost demanded me to watch this one. I agree. This scene is the most poignant for me, maybe even more than the “I wish I could quit you” scene and the ending because it says SO much. That incident traumatized and put the fear in Ennis of what happens to you if your gay, just like his dad intended, and that’s why he couldn’t commit to Jack, even after his divorce from Alma, was paranoid and asked Jack if he thought anyone secretly knew anything, and envisioned Jack dying of a hate crime.

    Very easy to say Ennis was a coward. It's far more complex than that. He's a stubborn, lonely man. He doesn't envision a different life, one where he could be with Jack and be happy, or somewhere else. It's part of a deeply rooted culture and way of life. He then pays the price and realizes his mistakes.

      Also let me add that in the novel it's very clear that he's bi and enjoyed the straight lifestyle, but his demise was that a man was his soulmate. So he's in a constant inner battle with himself and doesn't accept that his heart chose Jack. Jack knew who he was, Ennis didn't.

Its like people sharply became gay friendly just to show that they aren't homophobic and it was normalised, ON THE INTERNET. For me, real life is still like brokeback mountain. • @Cloudipy

      I watched it when I was younger and I thought the movie was gonna be funny because of all the jokes. The way it was advertised to me in high-school was it's a gay cowboy story between The Joker and Prince of Persia. And there were so many memes and parodies and puns that I genuinely thought it was gonna be the same type of funny action movies as Men In Black or KickAss or The Mask. I was totally confused when it wasn't the case. Instead it was super depressing, and slightly traumatizing and I was not prepared at all

    Different time back then. Ennis was just being honest and practical about the situation.

    • @ash_yt0
      @ash_yt0 Рік тому +9

      Not really. The film is all about Ennis making excuses to always keep the people he loves at arm's reach and never emotionally connecting with them. The tragedy isn't really about the world rejecting them, it's that they're two completely incompatible people who are in love. And it's only after Jack dies that Ennis is finally ready to be the person who could love Jack the way Jack needed him to. He's too late of course, for Jack's sake, and so "swears" to be more emotionally available to the people in his life. That's why he changes his mind about his daughter's wedding, whereas previously he would've made an excuse not to be there.
      The first things we learn about Ennis is that he's lost people in his life. His parents, then his siblings after they got married and had no more room for him. So he never gets close to people out of fear of losing them. And it took losing Jack for him to realise that he lost his one shot at happiness ironically because he was afraid to lose it. And he tries to do better for his daughters.
      Similarly the woman he was dating after Alma, he didn't stop seeing her because he disliked her because he was gay, he stopped seeing her because they actually connected, and that made Ennis uncomfortable and he felt he had to break it off before he got hurt. But its Ennis who is the one hurting himself.

      @@geoff3103 I think you missed my point. Of course this would be traumatising.
      But the film is more about Ennis's broader issues. By the end of the film you realise he often makes excuses. He pushes people away, and you realise that the reasons he gives are just excuses to not be close with anyone.

    Read the short story ;) It's almost more moving than the movie. Unlike far too much gay literature, this is a story about love, not sex. It's beautiful and fantastic for that reason. It opens peoples eyes to the reality and normalcy of two people of the same sex simply falling in love with each other...

The local police didn’t even give my white-trash neighbors a ticket. So if any of you younger guys who attend Pride festivities and all wonder why some of us are still gun shy…this scene explains it REALLY clearly. Most melodramas get you to cry, I feel, by being sorta trite and manipulative -- the 2 lovers meet, they're forced apart, one of them dies or almost dies, tears, the end.
