- Developed by the Earth Federation Forces in the latter half of the One Year War, the Gundam Ground Type continues to be deployed after the war. An example is the Gundam Ground Type S, which is named as such as it is a Gundam Ground Type deployed exclusively on the Spartan. The suit is a remodelled, ground use version of the RGM-79/GH Gundam Head which was used in the battle of A Baoa Qu. Its Gundam-like head is meant to replicate the psychological impact that the famous Gundam had on the Zeon forces.When the Earth Federation Forces' assault-class ship, Spartan, entered the air space of the South Seas Alliance's territories, it was quickly confronted by a squadron of MS-07B Goufs riding on Dodai sub flight systems. A battle then broke out, and the three Gundam Ground Type S piloted by Marcus, Orphee and Dent defended the Spartan's flight decks when it was boarded by the Goufs. By backing each other up, and with help from a RX-75 Guntank among others, they repelled the invaders.

They got knocked around a bit but it looks like not a single one has been destroyed so far. Already has a better on screen performance than the aqua GM.

By setting, This was a landing ship for the army, as an reaction of mobile suit become a thing, federation modified it with ability to use suits and add some gun on it. So it was designed to bring some tanks with it.
Thunderbolt and 8th MS team are the best out of the franchise in my mind. They treated the grunts as effective combat units, not just some random exploding fireworks. And the story as well, top notch at that.

The way the mobile suits break down and get clogged up with clay and shit in 08th MS team is quite refreshing. At the end of the day, they’re still machines and get random breakdowns that have to be fixed. Also just the way they portray mobile suits as actually being these 60 ton machines of destruction is super cool. I think there was a scene from gundam seed stargazer where one zaku essentially leveled a whole city. And yeah It would do that in real life for sure.
0080 gave Grunts some respect as well... Not the Scarlet team tho. They got done dirty :(

Except for the GMs. They get slaughtered in every scene they're in (unless they're the Gundam head variant) Io and his GM Ground type C is a rare exception.
There's only one GM in this scene and it's piloted by one of the main protagonists. Outside of this it's business as usual with GMs and GM heads getting slaughtered to the point it's just plain fanwankery for the zeon pseudo-nazis.

Your typical Federation pilot is like a Stormtrooper from Star Wars- can't hit the broadside of a barn and has a MS with armor that might as well be plastic (regardless of its actual material).

Yea, I really like how it clearly shows that the gouf was struggling to get in range. Spear users in media usually forget their range advantage which is quite silly.

@@0Heeroyuy01 yes and no, the ones on the deck are actually just standard late model gms while the one that dropped in was a type c. Which is probably one of the strongest mass production type suits and actually faster than the og Gundam.

I love how they actually have weight to them and don't fly around like they weigh nothing. And there not always getting shot dead center and exploding in a typical fireball like way. It looks, sounds and feels real in so many ways. I hope this trend continues for all future Gundam series.
Just depends whether the company wants to tilt a project toward art or toward product.

To be fair all of uc is like this. Even the original 0079 the ms had weight to them. The space fronts are hard to tell due to the lack of gravity. But every UC gundam entry is likethis. Check out Gundam Hatherway. 5/5 in every way dude. It follows the UC timeline.

Only universal Century timeline has those elements of realism, other than that, no gundam anime got such nice feeling, another detail is how zeon always get claps on land battles while earth federation barely keep up with zakus on space battles, like if they were desing and specialized in different combat and piloting styles

1:47 Love how the shot didn't follow through and hit the left catapult deck. Either the pilot is competent or the OS knows what not to hit. EFSF grunts in Thunderbolt are appearing to be much more professional than most previous renditions.

陸戦型ガンダム S型
RX78生産時に出た規格落ち部品を用いて生産された機体…ではなくこちらはサンダーボルト版。特にガンダムのパーツは使っておらず、しかも機体の9割はサンダーボルト版ジムと同じで、言ってしまえば顔だけのパチモンである。
機体性能は前述の通りほとんどジムなのでまあお察しの通り。ただしバックパックを大型の物に換装し、足にホバークラフトを装備しているおかげで一応「陸戦型」の名前通り陸戦での機動力は高い。
劇中ではスパルタンに多数が配備。目立った戦果はあげていないが、スパルタン防衛においてはただの見掛け倒しで終わらず、母艦を守り抜いて見せた。
The bit at 1:19 shows the nifty sound design this franchise has.
MS from differing factions make different sounds when moving.
Reminds me of how every character in Transformers Prime had unique footstep noises.
It's been that way for decades lol, they're literally the stock sound effects heard from both the feds and zeon's MS respectively throughout various entries of the franchise. But I won't fault you. It was more evident in the games though, the gundam battle series for the psp has it clearcut too.

@@fishpop true, even though I don't hear those sfx much nowadays. The more recent series of the franchise have this fixation for making most of the mobile suits glide around using thrusters, which I presume is easier to animate, but damn I miss watching mobile suits traverse bullshit using their legs as intended.

So this is what a GM is capable of doing instead of being treated like cannon fodder in about every Gundam 0079 lore expansion and people leaving comments saying Zaku suit this and Zaku pilot that. If the Federation won the OYW we need scenes of GMs winning battles.
There many manga has show good pilot on grunts in federation, unfortunately in anime they always treated like trash just to get explored 🤦♂️

Hardly, these are just mass production type GMs given Gundam heads and model numbers for psychological warfare purposes.
I like to think of them as customized to fit the environment of the thunderbolt sector, since that area of space is so dense with space lightning and debris, mobility is way more important and thus more veneers for precise and minoot movements

I wish Sunrise would take a break from those Build Divers and SD Gundam Shows and fund more seasons of this now that there is more material to animate.

@@MattBrain9336 Been like that since the start which is why the RX-78-2 is colored the way it is. They wanted it pretty to be more marketable to kids. Personally I like the Build kits, especially the accessories for easier customization, but it is also tiresome seeing all the super robot stuff in a series mainly defined by being real robot. I say that as a big G Gundam fan.
While I too wish they'd finish the UC projects they left behind I also can't wait for a new big AU series.
I'm a big fan of the stories but I also love the models and we need more variety. IBO brought some new designs but otherwise all we've been getting is the usual UC/Seed/00 rotation. Age hasn't gotten a decent kit in ages (hehe), and all new ms designs in the last years came from the custom remakes in the build series, which by their nature rarely bring something new to the table
@@npc6817 There's a lot of AU mangas that haven't been adapted, even for ones that only have a single anime. If they don't want to do a new AU, then they could at least revisit some of the less expanded on ones like G Gundam for example.
On the other hand though, I would like another Build Fighter-ish series reminiscing of the godtier season 1. That series really is the perfect example of a Gundam lite, that balance mecha badass with kid marketability and sport anime.
Maybe something like: The tournament of the Build Fighter day have now gone to the niche side after the prolifilation of the VR game, as such tournaments have now gone all underground, hosted by the “boomer” of the series, who consist of both die-hard fan and people who still consider that the old format is still a much more enjoyable way to play. The protagonist could then be a 30s something who missed his chance at a tournament back when it’s still popular, but still want to prove himself by joining these underground tournaments, when he got his hand on one of the custom Gunpla made by his builder friend, which he then use to win his qualifier, and then go out to fight in the tourney
Edit: Also he could meet an El-Diver who want authentic mecha combat, and aid him as the navigation/combat AI in the same vein as the ALICE system, and both of them fight together for glory

It's not coming out. The ova was basically a promotion for the manga, much like the VERY short Twilight Axis ova was a promotion for the light novel of the same name.

this one of the few times i've seen that no named feddie pilots are shown as competent. and not mass blowing up in record times. *edit* forgot that some of these were named pilots. still good to see the fed grunts being worth the millions of dollars mobile suits they use from time to time.
Thunderbolt has a habit of making grunts look competent pretty much.
No, all the federation pilots in this scene are named with actual character designs seen going about outside of their MS.

Coming from someone who's only familiar with gundam through stray clips and highlights, the part where the jetpack infantry fly past the gundam into the breached hull was really interesting.
The mobile suits usually move so weirdly fast for their size, so it was really cool to see just how slow its movement seem to actually be when compared to some humans with jetpacks just... casually floating past? It was *trying* to stop them, right?
Could be mistaken, but I'm guessing that means the mobile suits mostly look so fast because they're fighting eachother.

Oyw the suits are pretty slow in gravity, since they are mostly designed to kill enemy ships and other mobile suits in space.
It's not really until Hathaway where they have suits that can be hyper-maneuverable in gravity due to the minovsky flight unit, which is what white base and similar fed ships use to fly in gravity.

They barely use them when they do have them. The most useful I've seen them used was in Build Fighters when Sei put paint in the Star Build so he and Reiji could make some clear funnels visible. Writers just don't use them well most of the time so not having them doesn't matter.

It’s refreshing to see the EFSF not just being completely and utterly pulverized for once. Idk why but I always felt like during the one year war and in a lot of the anime zeon (even though this isn’t actually zeon they’re fighting in this clip) had better equipment/pilots than the EFF.
EFSF deserve to get pulverized, as they have inferior pilots and gear compared to Zeon, on average.

Iirc the lore explanation is that since Zeon had a head start on mobile suit development and pilot training, they were able to wipe the floor with less experienced gm pilots despite the gm being an overall better machine

作者が明確にパラレルだと言っていますので、まぁ劇場版やORIGINのようなアナザー宇宙世紀でしょうね。
自分は、正史としてみているけど、特にこのまま0083やZガンダム見ても問題なさそうやけどなぁ

@@xccelnext Most people who argue that it isn't canon say it's because the "technology is different", which I don't see. I think the differences are mostly in aesthetics. Others say it's because the South Seas Alliance was never mentioned in other UC shows. Hmm... so does that mean 0083 isn't canon because Operation Stardust wasn't mentioned in Zeta? Huh...

Seems like we see grunts shine on launch decks. The other scene we can see like this was in Unicorn. I still love that scene for how skillful the grunts of both side were.

銛？槍？の様なビームサーベルが何の役に立つのか疑問だったが、格闘戦が苦手な操縦者と恐怖心払拭の為には長所にもなるのかな、と思った。
ジャベリンの最大の長所はそのリーチでしょうね。あまり活かせてるシーンはないですが...
投げ槍として使用する場面もあったはずです。
UCではビームの生成範囲が小さいためか高出力の武装として描かれており、サーベルで切れなかった装甲を難なく切り落とすシーンがありました。

Honestly a good gouf pilot should be able to wreck these gms but the ssa pilots are brainwashed cultists, not trained soldiers. Both zeon and fed pilots take them down fairly easily in thunderbolt
Federation pilots only seem impressive here because the South Sea Alliance is pretty incompetent when it comes to combat.
Gundam heads seem to be the commander type units reserved for skilled pilots. Or atleast the veterans that did well enough in the war.

I didn't much care for Bandit Flower but everyone being an unlikable monster in December Sky was intentional. If War in the Pocket is about how conflict harms innocents, Thunderbolt is about how war destroys those who embrace conflict as a living. You see Daryl go from a decent guy to a frantic adrenaline junkie when he's hooked up to the Psyco Zaku and he only barely comes back from the brink by destroying the Psyco Zaku before it consumes him. Io Fleming on the other hand was broken long before the show even started and his arc from the end of December Sky into Bandit Flower is about trying to come back to his humanity after being a monster for so long. That's why he's a bit more chill in Season 2 than the bloodthirsty prick he is in S1
