  • The best air rifle plinking target I've ever built!
    Here im building a long range air rifle practice target. you wont miss this one when you get a direct hit.
    The blanks are the old hilti nailer blanks in .27 rimfire calibre . its fair to say i got a bit more than i bargained for with these. they are great fun and easy to make. When we get a break in the wind i will push this one out to the longer ranges as it will be a very challenging target in the wind.
    i also look at how dangerous blank firers really are with a test against the safety glasses, which im pleased to say passed the test with flying colours!
    The rifle im using is a prototype of the new air arms xti50 alu chassis and the scope is the new falcon optics s40i endura ffp. a really nice setup actually that im currently using for some local benchrest competitions.

      They're amazingly tough safety squints, the shape isn't great for being behind a scope but they're definitely a wise idea on the sketchier target builds😎

    Did this in the 80’s with a 12ga blank in a hole in a board. The Fiochi imprinted bruise on my face necessitated the addition of a slide over ‘safety catch’ for the cartridge!

    Hey Tilly, did you tried " hunde propper" ( Danmark). I would recommend this in stead, they are not so dangerous, theaper and much funnier, with smoke, glimts and sound, very good for long range bench shooting. In Denmark vi kan buy them around new year. Vi could buy them for for sixty years ago too in a little cardboard with 25 pieces. We used a little pistol, cock the trigger an put one in the end of the barrel, and make new years sound with them. Great for bullseye on 50 metres.
    Best regards

    Brilliant target IV did something similar, I used a wheel bolt. Cut the top bit off and turned it so i had a firing pin then drilled the rest off the bolt for the blank for the hinge link of motor bike chain and a couple spots of weld. It definitely doesn't throw anything back at you target's that react are so fun

    Fun but a bit sketchy, I’ve had the primer/pellet come back and hit me in hand doing this. Shooting at around 25yds it hit between trigger finger and my thumb, whilst still on the rifle, not got the minerals for anything but paper and knockdowns now 😜, keep the vids coming look forward to the next one.

    Have you tried shotgun primers? Very cheap per 100. I've used them close in at a very slight angle (with eve protection) with air pistols (around 10m) and air rifles at 25. Gives a loud Pap! Not so loud the Police get called 😁. Very satisfying in the workshop at 30+ feet (10m). We used to drill holes through scrap wood, push the primers in, often with 1inch red dots over the primers, angle the wood very slightly to one side, pop the glasses on & away you go. If my memory serves it was with mainly a Beeman P1 and a Webley Tempest? Hurricane?

    tad risky yes . but oh so much fun . although it really does emphasise safety specs . they took a full on hit there but that would have definitely saved an eye for sure . not just in close range air gunning but in anything one is doing were they is any chance of flying debris

    If you have no use for the nail gun, could you have removed the cartridge chamber from it to fit into the target and then installed the blanks into that. Might even be possible to retain the firing mechanism so there is no danger of anything coming back at you. The power in these nailer cartridges, probably exceeds the impact energy of the pellet, so could well get debris flying backwards. We use .44 caliber in our cable spiking guns and they will easily force the spike completely through the cables.

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  3 дні тому

      Yeah I think I'll strip the hilti and see what parts I can use, I love the crack of the cartridges but need to improve it's safety a fair bit. Maybe a barrel and striker affair would mitigate any ricochets...🤔

  • @scousewillo62
    @scousewillo62 3 дні тому

    I think the problem you had with the blow back/ricochet was you compromised the base of the cartridge and allowed the blast to blow towards you. If you could make a rig with a small plate to shoot at that would have a pin to impact the rim of the cartridge it would detonate safely. and the force of the blast would travel away from you.

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  3 дні тому

      I reckon you're correct mate, I think I split the target with the pellet ,half went through and set it off,the other half the split was flung back at me. Definitely need a more typical target paddle arrangement with the cartridges behind it... 😉

  • @briantinn1118
    @briantinn1118 4 дні тому

    A thicker back plate would make them easier to drift out, but definitely a good one.

    What’s the most accurate Airarms xti50 or anschutz 9015/hp?

    • @tillysgunstocks
      @tillysgunstocks  2 дні тому

      Well that's a question and half...
      There's nothing between them at typical competition ranges upto 55yds. We're really at the limit of the pellets at this point. However at the extreme ranges of sub 12 the xti absolutely blows the 9015 out the water.
      I was planning to use my 9015 as my winter br rig, there's a few vids setting it up and prepping the front rest etc. However it became apparent quite quick that I could shoot the red xti more accurately on the nsra br cards. With a couple of extra X's per card. I couldn't ignore that so I've made the swap to the xti for the br comps now.
      The sight picture is marginally stiller on the 9015 and the trigger can possibly go lighter in its break weight but I've got both the 9015 and xti set up nice and light and safe. With my current setup they feel the same. That was intentional so I can swap between them with no dramas. I've actually got a 9015 trigger blade on the xti now too.
      The xti also deals with the extremes of temperature better than the 9015, as noticed last week shooting a br card Indoors at 2°c . Same couldn't be said for me. I was freezing..😆
      I love them both but the xti fits me a little better hence I can squeeze a bit more out of it.
      I'm working on some new parts for the chassis currently to improve my shooting position for the disciplines I shoot so there's a chance I can get a bit more out of it still.
      Given the chassis version is due quite soon I'd probably hold off and see what factory options that has before making any decisions.
      😉

    When i was a child my friend took a shot gun shell and wedge it in a tree so he could shoot the primer with a BB gun. When he did the BB hit the primer and came back at him and shoot his eye out. So I am concerned you target set up may be unsafe especially it hard lead, od pellets it BB heads, polymer tips. So be careful on what you use.
    What about leaving the blank sheel out a try shooting through the hole.
