      I have been journaling for 21 years. I also create albums--- much like a scrapbook of my direct personal experience. Don't take yourself to seriously.
      I write a journal of wisdoms in comment sections--- saving them in memos.
      In 2 or 3 hundred years someone may comprehend the magnitude of my discoveries. At this time I have not met anyone who can wrap their head around the implications. I don't find very many curious people. People believe they are more aware than they really are.

      I'd argue that digital offers more efficient facilities to process your thoughts after writing, link them, organize them. Even the most basic activity of searching is much more convenint and fast in digital. And there are digital solutions (e.g. Obsidian) that store the information in a format as basic and evergreen as possible, like almost plaintext Markdown, so you'd be able to easily carry your data further into the future. So, I would only recommend analog writing if you only need to write once and never do much further processing.
      And if you are writing for yourself why does it matter that the physical book will remain? Lets be honest, most of us are not imperators, and nobody would care about our journals. And the reason that Meditations remained to our day is not because it was written in a physical book, but because it was persistently copied over and over. Another drawback of physical books is that you need physical space to store them (that's becoming an inconvenience in a modern world), and can't easily carry all of them around.

    Did not realize when I actually started putting my positive manifestation in my journal. At my lowest life phase I was dreaming and journaling my sea facing villa, my design business, my dream family. Today when reading back the journal am amazed how they all came true to the finer details

      @@Virtual_Guy I cant speak on behalf of OP but the way I have done it is just a sort of checklist It can be as sloppy as you want or as neat and well put together as you want but ultimately I believe that when you put your hopes and ambitions to paper its like setting a commitment to yourself

    I would like people to remember that INTENTION is everything. Don’t just vomit out your bad stuff. There is now plenty of evidence that journaling can also increase obsessions and justifications. Serial killers and school shooters almost all keep journals. You must intend something cleansing and forgiving and use it intentionally for self-awareness. It is not always catharsis unless you decide it is.

      Gosh! I love that you said INTENTION IS EVERYTHING, and to make it cleansing and forgiving. I am starting to journal from TODAY. I was gifted three different types of journals and having been looking at them for about two months, hesitating to begin as I was thinking of ‘getting it right’ and saving the journals for ‘something special’. TODAY IS THE DAY I BEGIN TO WRITE WITH INTENTION!

    When i get behind i can spend 8+ hours writing. Been journaling since 1992. You can even see how your handwriting changes over time. I often make myself laugh when reading back ❤️

Journaling is nothing but a guide for your life, for your thoughts, for you actions. One who journal for longer period of time can understand this better!

      @@mariefrenz3133 I began journaling about 1950. I wrote about Elizabeth who becamer queen and in 1954 about the east coast hurricane. An older waitress, at Cape Hatteras
      told us "13 head of people were killed down the road. I was 14 at the time, and I was impressed.
      Over the years some people were disturbed by my writing. I look back and know these people were not my friends.

    My proudest possession are my journals. I am 16 and I have been journaling constantly ever since I was 7... I have 22 journals completed, I've had years in which I had one completed in a month...
    And sometimes when I read it back I get uncomfortable but other times I'll be surprised about how I looked at the world back then. Even though I wrote only about "unimportant" things and things I don't think are true anymore, reading my old journals gives me the possibility to see the world I saw back then

      A man following the steps of his woman is not a man. Your role is to lead her, or you'll find real quick that she'll leave you for a man she can look up to. While she's learning on stoicism, you should learn on what it means to be a man and how to be one. No offense

    I started Journaling and it's grown so big in our house that we now journal together as a family. My favorite time of the day is Journaling in the evening with my kids to off load their day, a create a restful environment for sleep. Thank you for this pathway ❤

    I don't journal. I'm dyslexic. I have horrible handwriting and I have ADHD. Writing is not conducive to creative thought for me. The physical task takes too much of my concentration for my creativity to actually flow. But I do sketch And have for years. Some of my sketches are completed drawings and some are just gestures with notes. Journaling does not have to take one specific form for it to be a valid practice. And it took me a long time to come to this realization. For years I beat myself up for not being able to journal or get anything out of the monumental effort that journaling took. Only when I let go of what I thought it should be did I really get something out of it.

      Its perfectly fine my friend. Language is just a medium. Journal is similar to meditation. Mostly People write a journal, but its not limited to just writing. Your language is sketch/art, just like some scientists and artists.. on the other side, i am sure your journal looks more interesting with all sketch on it, giving it more visual experience.

      I have dyslexia and I'm a copywriter.
      What I personally do is sketchnotes, it's a combination of writing and drawing in one page.
      Check youtube about it.

    I love to write in cursive. Today’s world we are constantly typing into screens. There’s something so great about moving my hand across the page. I have kept journals for years, and I have experimented with writing with both hands, backward and forward!

      Hebrew and Arabic are easy for the left hand since they go right to left, the same way it feels natural to write english with right hand, left to right and you'll also learn new language, that's always a plus
      When Writing English backwards, the left hand makes more sense and you can see your hands mirroring the movements.

      I don't even know if your left or right handed lol hopefully this makes sense

    Started journaling earlier this month and I must say I have never felt more mental clarity in my life. This act can create a suitable balance in your emotions. You are always calm and calculated. And my retentive memory jumped up a little more.

Never write from the perspective of who you want to be but from the perspective of who you really are... Once you know who you are then something happens (no words to explain)

    Moleskin journals literally made me fall in love with journaling. I have over 200+ full since 2013.

      That’s a lot there. I write may be 2 Moleskines per year at max. Usually it is about 3 Moleskins every 2 years. I also write small and in a language that does not take up a lot of spaces nor as lengthy as English. I also spent at least 2 hours each day. I wanna know how do you keep the 200+?

    I am an avid journaler, but I found it impossible to write freely of my feelings and observations when writing in pen and paper because the thought of my private writings being found, or upon my eventual death, having my family finding them, made me sensor my writing intentionally or unintentionally. When "password protect" on computers came into being, that freed me to journal more openly.I have been doing so ever since (25 years?).

    Journaling for me has always been a private, self-soothing kind of therapy. If I am struggling with some kind of stress or situation, I can not control or change, I write it out. It helps me get the feelings and thoughts out of my head and I can move on with my day. I also started keeping a journal after I had my first child. At first I started it for them to have when they get older, now I enjoy looking back at it. I have four children, a husband and a full-time job so the Journaling has not happened in a long time! But, I know I can always go back to it whenever I want and start back up.

      I have about a dozen plastic file boxes filled with album/journals. I also have electronic files--- many are archived on websites. I started writing onlinebin 2000 because something interesting began to emerge.
      My albums have diagrams, artwork, articles and journals--- depending on how deep I want to look back into things. I re-live the best and the worst of life and gain great joy and satisfaction of the sdpiritual growth I have realized, and documented. 💗 Like a conversation with God. 👀🐡

    People think I go too far caring about waterproof ink in my fountain pens but here he is talking about DaVinci's journals being readable up to this day. Now, do I hope to be as important as him? Nope. But I maybe I can leave something cool for my grandcrildren's children

    I use the Julia’s morning pages approach. That and No 4 have been the biggest reasons why journaling has become so important to me. It’s like my therapist because something magical happens - as in the processing you start to get perspective and a wisdom starts to come through. Love the Anne Frank quote too

    The first tip really works. I started journaling by writing only 5 sentences about what happened that day when I was 14. And I've pretty much never stopped journaling since.

      'I was aggressive in my response to Matt about Maths and I hope I can change that tomorrow.' is a simple, life changing (reminder to self to be kinder tomorrow) sentence. Also, 'today, I realised I don't like the boring flavour of tea.' is simple but life changing. Because the next time you go to buy tea, you double check yourself.

    I've been journaling since I was given a journal as a high school graduation present in 1975! In 2010 I saw David McCollough speak at a family history conference. He said something to the effect that only those who leave physically written journals and letters will be remembered. You just proved that with the anecdote about Steve Jobs. If someone doesn't know what to write about, think of what you'd like to know about your ancestors and then write about those things in your life. I think reading my past journals is interesting as I can see my growth and also how I've stayed the same.

      Yes I started in 1979. Before that I kept a diary. It’s amazing the differences I have seen in myself and then there are things that haven’t changed (that really need to lol).

    I just realized how I needed this..! I was a journaler in my youth and I quit it long time ago. What it hits me is that I took different ways to replace that: mostly Facebook, those thinks that I could share with others, though they were inner thoughts. I emailed to myself for those things I didn't want to share. I even wrote in the cell phone notes or in loose papers... I think it's time to grow and come back to the old habit. Thank you so much for the enlightening!

    I never realized the potential of journaling until I discovered the Stoics' approach. These habits have helped me gain clarity and perspective in challenging times.       Stack this new practice of journaling onto something else that you already do. I’ve made it as a practice that I do for 15 minutes before noon everyday. Noon is my reminder to get this new habit accomplished. I’m seeing what works for me, too. Is it beneficial for me to do it before breakfast? I’m finding out that my stomach wants the 15 minutes to get over with instead of allowing me to let my thoughts flow.Carving out 15 minutes is doable for me right now. Begin.

      think about it as writing a letter to yourself, or better talking to someone via paper. and you are free to write about anything you want: the weather, your mood, the music you are listening to, or the herbal tea you are drinking while journaling. its a place where you are totally free to say whatever you want.

    Thank you Ryan for introducing me to stoicism. It all started when my sister-in-law mentioned the title of a book, your book, The Obstacle is the Way. That same night I purchased it to listen on Audible. Since then I have listened to several of your books and podcasts and I journal. Memento mori.

    This is great and motivational. I have had a brain injury in the past, and I found that writing has helped clear my head and my brain. I try and write down thoughts and how I'm feeling more than anything, however, I haven't written in such a long time. Maybe this is a calling for me to start writing again?

    What makes journaling an even better daily habit is writing with a fountain pen. I use Lamy fine nip, which is a low cost plastic pen that writes so well. I use my journal to:
    1. Capture my initial thoughts
    2. Set my meditation intention
    3. Capture immediate thoughts from the meditation
    4. Then insights
    5. Then actions
    6. Then I capture my intent for the day which I review in my evening meditation session

    I journal in the evening to cover my day...I also have 4 journals currently
    1. Self-Care journal, which helps bc I'm also my dad's caregiver
    2. Basic daily journal
    3. A FML journal, that is only written in when my day is totally shitty
    4. Commonplace Journal
    Edit: I also have a separate Bible Study journal

      I have 3. A weekly journal which is essentially split into 3-2-1s (3 things you're grateful for/proud of, 2 things you wanna get better at and 1 thing you wanna achieve for the week), a daily journal where it's just one thing I'm proud off, one thing I wanna be better at and one thing I wanna achieve for the day and then another journal where it's more expressive, so I'll pen down my thoughts for the morning and night. It's helped me immensely

    Waaayyy back in the 1960s, (1962 to be exact) I started a journal which I put on 3 x 5 cards because I didn't want anyone to find it. (Hey, I was 12 at the time!) Later, when I started attempting to write fiction, I would put the ideas and thoughts in an actual book. I keep separate books for dreams, ideas, etc. Somewhere along the line, I realized that I had to stop putting them in separate books because *everything was connected*. The dreams informed my writing, the writing informed my dreams; my dreams informed and were a result of my "mundane" life; my "mundane" life informed my dreams and my writing, so I stopped putting things in separate books. Then, when computers came around, I started writing things in the computer. Nowadays, if I'm looking for a specific incident/idea/dream, it's easier for me to go up to the folder and simply search for what I'm looking for and then, when I find the entry, to either note it in the present document as to where to find the idea, or to actually bookmark it, so all I have to do is click on the bookmark and it takes me back (or forward if I'm reading old entries) to the subject I'm researching.
    BTW, my journal is now 57 years old and continuing. 😼
    If there is such a thing as reincarnation, I full expect to come back in another life and find those journals.

      @@tnijoo5109 My journaling style is very reflective. When I open my journal, I ask myself a question like 'how is your day going?' or 'why did ______ happen today and how can I prevent (if negative)/repeat (if positive) it from happening again.' Or sometimes I just write without any prompt at all just to get whatever is in my mind down onto paper.
      It saved my life not because I was suicidal but because I was depressed and I felt like if that depression continued that it could lead down the path of suicide (unlikely in my case). I did not want to go down that path so I decided that I would take to paper and vent all my thoughts and feelings, all the bad and the good. I looked at what I had written about my life and realized there was way more good than bad. This helped me to move out from depression and into the reality that life can be tough but there will always be a positive side to look forward to and strive toward.

    I constantly struggle with boundaries in my life. People reading my journals. People putting pressure on my to stop writing journals. People sulking because I won't let them read my journals. People mocking that I write a journal. I can see why Davinci wrote in code.

    I first wrote in my journal in the year 1996 as a displaced refugee, but I became more serious when we left northern Iraq to go on a perilous boat journey from Bali to Australia ~ and once we got out of detention centre in Australia, I started writing again and journaled using a physical book until I went to university and then at uni and on my travels I used applications like A note or Scrivener but I never gave up - that’s to say until I had kids. Nowadays I feel so different and I mean I miss it so freaking much. So the I finally bought a journal yesterday and I am going to JUST START! And I should mention Meditations by Marcus Aurelius is my fave book of all time!

    Been journaling for 35 years. It’s indispensable to me. Recently, read and burned about twenty years of them. It was extremely cathartic. Think I’ll add an every ten year burning. Just one journaler’s process ❤️‍🔥📚

      @@bornalisinha4401 Burning is a release. Also, years of journals are heavy, physically and psychologically. Burning them is a way to let go, to be lighter. I read them, keep passages I don’t want to forget, and release the rest.

    When I was journaling about my first marriage over the years, it became clear - it would´nt last.
    Later I burned the written down and it was such a relief.
    Nowadays I still have notebooks about My journey. And they are full of poems, recepies, laughter and being aware.

    I agree with every single point of this video. If you disagree, youre not getting it. I just found out about this channel, and Im not interested in stoicism, but this whole process just came to me randomly. I just started fixing myself, and I dont even know how to explain my process. I was writing for 7-8 hours on some days, and I enjoyed every moment of it.

    Started this new thing where I just let my thoughts loose on a page, no stress about how it looks or reads. Then I hand it over to my trusty sidekick, ChatGPT, to do the cleaning up. It turns my brain dumps into something that's easy on the eyes, still sounds like me, but way smoother.
    Once it has tidied up my jumbled ideas into a neat, coherent format, I seek its insights on my writing. Honestly, it's a fascinating process that I highly recommend!

    I just started Two days ago! I couldn't make an entry yesterday though, but I'll write yesterday's entry today so I can make up for it. I was very worried that Journaling would be useless for me because I didn't have a format and I didn't write consicely and clearly as other people do. But I realized that it's all about just starting. We can get better at doing anything by doing more, all we need to do is just start. regardless of situation.

      I like to think of days as being separate. Not Day 2, Day 3, ugh can't be asked Day 4...Day 5... every day is Day 1.

      As someone who struggled to make journaling stick, I found that if I miss a day and try to summarize it the next day, it would become a hinderance for me. I felt like I had to play catch up all the time. Unless there’s something you really want to remember from
      the last day, I recommend just skipping it and writing about your current day while your thoughts are fresh, otherwise yesterday’s thoughts start to muddle with today’s thoughts and so on :)

    Just start! Good idea. We can sometimes get stuck into thinking that we must perform like a master, but we need to remember that the master was once an apprentice too. Start now, and you have a chance at mastery. Don't start, and you will never be a master.

    I remember Journaling when I was in my teens. It was mostly teenage angst and my family read some parts of it. I burnt all my work down. I'm slowly understanding that I don't always have to make it about other people. I am now slightly more mature and will once again being writing in a physical diary with much clarity and focus on myself.

    Love this Ryan! Thank you 🎉 I also use a bunch of different journals, and glad to hear you do the same. I was a bit worried that I needed to consolidate to one journal, but this is what works for me. The momentum isn't there yet though. Also, love the emphasis on using a physical journal. I took pictures of my old journals a couple of weeks ago so I could throw them away. But I will rethink that for the current ones I have.

    I used to journal a lot when I was a child/teenager until I found out that someone I (should) trust the most, has read them. Ever since, I do not trust anyone, become secretive and keep to myself. I still do journaling sometimes, but in a file with Microsoft Word protected with a password. Starting a physical journal is just a crazy idea for me, it's beyond my imagination ¹/⁹¹²²

      Oh dude, I hear ya. I write for hours, but it's all behind multiple passwords on my phone. The betrayal of someone reading your journal cuts deep. After it happened it was a long time before I could even start again. And they easily do transfer between phones. They can be moved along with you if you plan for it and don't just leave it on an old device.

    I am a philosophy teacher and stoicism changed my life for the better. And I love your way in putting it out there. However journaling is something I struggle to keep as a habit. Does it happen to you to go back to your old writings and to hate what is written and maybe throw it away? This happens to me. What do you think that is?

      One thing i learned about journaling is that don't take it as something that has to be productive rather let it be your reflection time a journal where your many thoughts are free to be written and feelings and the important things to you hope this helps

      Yes this has happened to me-I will go back and read and for various reasons (I don’t like my writing, I don’t like my thoughts) I will throw it away. If I were to make a guess I would say that you suffer from perfectionism and control issues like I do - it’s like we want these journals to be Nobel prize winning documents.
