Metal Box, the album where this 'song' featured, is an absolute masterpiece. I am sorry I discovered this album late, but, I guess, it's never too late!
itzoccor The Metal Box is astonishing, but try to find the original 12" version of Memories, it's superior and has Another (vocal version of Graveyard) on b-side.
Thanks: found it on Spotify. Yes, it does sound a lot "deeper" and more intriguing. Even their B-sides or jams were so full of ingenuity and ideas, and how inspired they were. I am not surprised they (sort of) burned out after the yreached such an apex! Thanks again
This is great.I listen P.I.L. in my youth angstist years. This is hypnotic as what? It's like hell's machine is working all the time and never stops. And Lydon's maniac voice over that.Brilliant.
just think this sound came out what, a year after the Sex Pistols broke up? For john Lydon and crew to make such a switch is amazing. Lydon is a genius. Period.
" For john Lydon and crew to make such a switch is amazing. Lydon is a genius. Period." You can thank Levene + Wobble for the sound. The band in this video is pretty mechanical.
@@deletebilderberg NO way , this is the line up which came right after ... this was actually a pretty competent line up which had already written almost half of the songs on " Album " . Lydon decided to do it solo with session musicians , thus , sacking all these guys , Martin Atkins having got the sack in PIL was as important for the PIL sound as Levene or Wobble´s .
i totally agree!!! but it's quite honest as well in that song what is really missing is that tone change from the bass like pumping the low freq suddenly!
The problem with metal box is that it didn't got the right treatment in the studio sessions, so any other versions of it songs are better than the originals.
When I first got the LP I was not sure if it was 33rpm or 45rpm . Still got the vingl in perfect condition. My mum had a house clearance and just thought it was an old tin. Big shame!
i have it and the long version is ok but it's just an extension of the studio version. instead of looping "words cannot express" at 4:30 or whatever the album length is, it's the full take. levene's guitar gets better as it goes and lydon gets more and more emotional (i swear you can hear him tearing up, his voice is quivering really bad towards the end) but wobble starts fucking with the bassline and playing different things, which is a mistake because the death disco bassline is perfect.
Such a great performance, really fucking great! Cannot stop watching and listening, already ripped it into mp3 for my iPOD! Much better than the Studio Version!
no problem, I understand what you mean. And we communicate, unlike some people i've read things from I wouldn't dare to repeat. We both like PIL, and it's good to share meanings the way we do,thanks for reacting anyway.
This is a great version, no matter who's playing. And about the bass,I'm a bassplayer myself by I really luv the bassline,I often play alonf for 15-20 min.ofcourse you have to develop as a musician, but that doesn't mean a simple bassline can't be good.I like low bass that just goes on,if it has the right groove the numbers on tones you spay isn't important.often less is more!
@hellchild65 hmmm, its like an oxymoron to me, whilst the sound seemed to come together in the mainstream terms of things, the actualy music suffered. Altough I do like Flowers of Romance.
I had the actual Metal Box in my hands back in the early 80s at a local used record shop. It was MINT. They were asking $15. I'm ashamed to say I was too cheap to shell out for it... Just looked it up on Discogs: $250. UGH!
Nope, they didn't, but Paul Simon is till now the only person who was able to let them all dance.I'm sorry for Johnny Lydon, but I think they wouldn't let him in in China, unfortunatly.BTW this has nothing to do with my taste, it's just a fact (the China thing)
i dont think any better versions of death disco, no birds do sing, or graveyard exist besides the studio versions. really, memories and chant are the only metal box songs ive heard that are much better on live bootlegs than on the album. this video is probably the first good one ive seen of post-levene pil doing levene-era pil. most of the later versions are awful.
this version is cool but who is the band on this? Is this the one where he hired wedding musicians who knew the Sex Pistols catalog? this is clearly no the Levene/Wobble lineup nor the Mcgeoch/Diaz/Bruce Smith/Edmonds lineup...
Sorry, but you're mistakken, it's china where they are not allowed to dance and scream, it's announced before a show and the amount of heavy looking chinese cops is most of the times enough to prevent the crowd from doing so,but i've seen a show once where the crowd didn't listen and the police didn't interfere. But guess who played there.
this bass line is so amazing...
Jah Wobble!
@@jimmyromano249 I prefer Wobble´s tone but by now I´ve got used to this too.

Excellent album métal box... Souvenirs

yeah you`re right
fantastic
saw PIL twice in the day
i can`t describe how good it was
Great version of Memories!!! Love this.
This is a fantastic and best live version of Memories, out of all the Pil line ups, this is definitely best.
just think this sound came out what, a year after the Sex Pistols broke up? For john Lydon and crew to make such a switch is amazing. Lydon is a genius. Period.
Keith Levene played a MAJOR role in shaping the early /classic PIL sound.
gotta love the coke addled experimental 80's music, tore the term "music genre" a new one
Blinding live version ,hypnotic Wobble Bass, Screeching Levine guitar and a psychotic Lydon giving it all.
I think his voice is unique and awesome..
he CAN sing.
xP
An amazing live performance.seen them a few times live in the 80s.
Yes, there is an anarchy movie and this is part of it. Great!!! I just love this gig in Japan!!!
Well, I just love John!!!
memories...they are all I have sometimes... fantastic...this is..the best

AKA 'The Holiday Inn' band!
Fuck Levene and Wobble. They've been irrelevant for decades. Lydon is PiL.

King Johnny... no one can beat him..
good to see they are reforming this year to celabrate there 30th aniversary of the metal box album

Fantastic!!!
memories sounded great in 84/85 with the 2 guitars.
thanks for sharing
Keith Levene played 3 at the same time before that ... if I´m not mistaken
Wow this is so intense. Jeez, so powerful.
great music !!!!!!
THANK YOU!!
Excellent and unique voice, still love it!
It has always been my favorite PIL song🤟
this lokks like the 1983 world tour, martin atkins on drums n the penguins on instruments.
They're so tight!!
Gran pezzo, john idolo incontrastato
Nobody can sing a lyric like he
Love it!!!!!!
Death Disco version in Lydon's dvd is about 10 minutes long. You (and me, because I haven't) should hear that one.
Very chingon!! This was really rock,
im gonna see these guys at coachella this april!

Two notes but good ones.
sorry for the typing mistakes
outstanding video ..the whole show is awesome
Wonder if he still has that video he was shooting with that awesomely 80s cam
Such a great performance, really fucking great!
Cannot stop watching and listening, already ripped it into mp3 for my iPOD!
Much better than the Studio Version!
Everyone should know this
The guitar player looks like Mark Shultz..I am not too sure though.
wow! this band is fuckin awesome!
i always heard of this band and one day i saw them in VH1 and my life changed!
agreed. pretty much every song on this cd (album) was a basement or club hit. love it love it!
It's almost Ska, very very grrovy love it ;)
This sounds nothing at all like Ska
Haha. Yes it's ska with the usual two flamenco chords and the two root notes of those chords being yelled by Lydon!
@@blackmore4 more disco than anything

Bass killer
Martin Atkins on drums?
Who else ? That man hits a cymbal and you instantly know it is him.
great bassline!
this has a bit of a deathrock edge to it.
JOHNNY??!!!......YOU ROCK!!!.........♥✴✴✴✴✴✴✴‼▪▪▪
great music!!
John Lydon is a legend, maybe the only one that can be side by side with Iggy Pop.
+gega27tt he's better than iggy
+Sheriff Lophophora yep
+Sheriff Lophophora he's my favorite too
Lydon owns them ALL
lol,he is biggest by far!
great live
There's a little segmant of a pil song in the movie,A most wanted man,bar scene, anybody know what song it is?
What a frontman Lydon was
check the size of the video camera Johnny's carrying, lol
@hellchild65 hmmm, its like an oxymoron to me, whilst the sound seemed to come together in the mainstream terms of things, the actualy music suffered.
Altough I do like Flowers of Romance.
What band is this? It should be the Wobble/Levene era but that doesn't look like them back there to me.
Where was this ?
Great performance.
Fantastically brilliant. Rotten is a fucking genius .
Brilliant, but it sounds too perfect to me, it was about this time in PIL after Levine and Wobble were gone, it all seemed to fall apart.
You want to download this video? From UA-cam?
It's actually possible.
Yes he is genius very
Here John becomes the future Thom Yorke. Ahead of his time again. But I could be wrong...

Anarchy Movie live in Japan 1985
if this is johnny's wedding band, then i want them for my wedding ... they are tight, good-looking ... and well, fantastic
@neurogami - That looks like Wobble playing bass in the vid?
I think it's from Live in Tokyo...
It is. Just look up PIL Nakano.
What do you exactly want? Audio or Video? Anyway, the best source would be eMule. I got the whole Live in tokyo from eDonkey.
how can i transformit onmp3???? tell meeeee

His true hair colour must be like sex pistols in winterland san francisco, I guess. If you watch "Seattle", you can tell his hair is dyed blonde.
Ah, mannn. This version is THUMPING!
Really? I didn't realize the Guess Who toured internationally.
I believe this was in Japan, but i could be right, i could be wrong.

@pdxphreek Wobble? No fucking way, Wobble left, then Levene. Then Lydon, with a Japan tour coming up, grabbed some bar band and made them "PiL".
@CerebralCrisis No problem, apology accepted. John is one of my heroes too.
