I used to read, I always had a book in my hands, and considered myself a life long reader. Now don't get me wrong, I was a high school dropout, I married the love of my life when I was a junior in High School, just could not wait, you know that feeling, well most folk do. So I started my Senior year but my mind was just not on learning what the teachers were offering, it was 1969 and I had in my head that as the man of the house, it was my job to bring home an income so we could get on with our married life. So I dropped out, and we moved to a neighboring State where jobs were plenty, you see there was shortage of young men to do most everything because the military was grabbing those abled bodied young fellows and sending them to Nam, those who didn't want to go, went North to Canada. Long story short, I hated Canada, and my number came up for the draft. I had a brother-in-law who was in the Army earlier and he advised me to join up and pick anything but infantry, so I did that, joined for 3 years and took Commo for a job. Anyhow eventually I got out after 8 years (one in Nam) and after getting my GED in the Army, I became a cop, and a good one, got promoted to Chief, and a line of duty crash sent me to hospital and back to school to learn a new trade. I graduated with a degree as a Legal Assistant minoring in Computer Science. Now nobody wanted to hire a 55 year old legal assistant, or computer programmer for that matter and eventually I was declare disabled by the bureau. I stopped reading when computers became the new learning tool and still try to learn a new thing daily, at 73 years old, I am still sharp as a tack, I hope to take after mom and live into my 90's but a bit of cancer has put that thought on hold. I revisit the surgeon who removed my right kidney in a week or so to see if he got it all. Wish me luck.
I found way to leave headphone jack on front cover feed the wires Overton instead of under speaker like they did, oh and neat trick clip leads close to terminal so not pulling on tabs. I learned that working on mine
I got it all done still have random pop sound but the audio is bit better not as much fading in and out still needs alignment. Left selenium rectifier and old ballast tube in since radio does work on it.
The power cord retrierver was like the old Electrolux vacuum cleaners. As a young'n I would pull the cord out of mama's vacuum cleaner just to watch it fly back inside.
always learn something. i am 71 years old and that's what i tell my granddaughter. if you don't keep learning, you are brain dead. youtube is a good place to learn stuff. and the price is right! i also like mister radio and phono tv radio nut.
If you can, yes, but if testing in circuit gives a higher, out of tolerance than marked measurement, it's quicker to just test first. Tube equipment is nice, because the elements in a tube won't conduct unless powered and biased, so there's usually not as many conductive paths in parallel with resistors in a tube unit. If something reads low, then isolating a lead is a good idea to check for the resistor drifting low, but carbon comp's almost always drift high.
Zenith model L600 from 1954. Nice that BAMA has a copy of the SAMs Photofact online for it. Too bad you aren't going for a filter capacitor replacement kit ( Filt-R-Pak). Whole thing is on a PC board and makes things easier all for $40. Seller is tomj8 on fleebay. I see no problem doing a restoration on it just needs TLC.
In a pinch the 1r5 can be used for the 1l6 but poor on high sw . But there cheap and I have 3 of those radios never use sw anyway aah or the radios have a rice burner 😅 keep the 1l6 in the spare holder
I find transoceanic radios 📻 interesting 🧐, but I’ve never 👎 owned one ☝️. I should check out yard sales and stuff. They’re a deluxe version of an AM/FM radio 📻. Out of tolerance capacitors and IF cans need some attention. Your friend, Jeff.
@@oldavguywholovesRCA True. Was wondering I have 2 Grundigs I picked up...I believe its a power issue...not sure. Would you know anyone in Ga like yourself who is good and fixes sw radios? Thanks 🙂
A 1r5 can be subbed for 1l6 sw weak on high freq but there 5$ use them to save the1l6s have a few of theese radios never use sw . Anyway have real sw radio ss .
That's a gamble you have to take, the trick is to not pay a lot for it and if it doesn't work out your feelings aren't hurt to much and you will have a parts unit to aid in the next one.
SOMEONE PLEASE help me to be able to get nice clear schematics like I see here on this guy's phone. I buy legit download for this radio and the schematic ain't worth CRAP. As usual this youtubber doesn't have any contact information

Yeah that was a slight pain in the caboose. Thanks for the info!

Yeah, me too. I could never get mine to crank no matter how many times I pulled on the cord :-)

You keep flexing that switch and that lead will bust off!
Good to isolate resistors before testing

I'm in process of restoring one of these an R600 chassis
Good luck!

Very nice video !!!!!!
Hope to hear from you. Thank you.
I always considered these things ugly. They did work quite well, an now with so many stations gone an lots of room to operate they should work well.
É mais fácil cortar os pinos dobrar para soldar o novo ou não?
electronics old and new by m caldiera did a restoration on a transoceanic solidstate a while back.

Also see: Jim Burns, he really tares them down, and his wit is interesting...

Hello Sam, Do you repair radios for people who would send them in? I just picked up a Grundig s450dlx and it has no power with dc pack or batteries.
Sorry I don't.
Bumble Bee caps had a Bad Rap!
I'm highly prejudiced against them. Thanks!
Another question for you...I wanted a zenith transoceanic radio...is this radio worth owning?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder aka If you like it and you want one then yes its worth owning.

Im new to the channel and I have enjoy it. 🙂👍🏻

Was PCB oil used in those old BB caps ?
I wouldn't think so, but always err on the side of caution if your not sure.
It doesnt work. Kind wondering what kinda price to check anc then repair it.

Testing paper capacitors and bumble bees are a waste of time.
May be but it's fun to check them anyway.
