As Gabe Newell said: Fun is NOT realism, but reinforcement "We added bullet holes in the game not because it's realistic but because it reinforces the idea that you, the player, have impact on the environment you're playing in and that is where fun is drawn from."
Games like Undertale, Pizza Tower, and Stardew Valley are meant to use the formula of excluding ultra realistic graphics and just go with the flow. So there are some videogames out there that have the same graphics as like in the good ol' days.
Undertale's funny stuff (big brother funny skeleton isn't really realistic), Pizza tower's general premise / game (a pizzaman has to save his failing business from a laser that will be fired by a pizza head), and Stardew valley's weird stuff Also they are all pixel based-graphically games. Undertale's retro, Pizza tower's ms paint, and Stardew valley's retro
They have to realize. Realistic graphics work for realistic games. It works so well for Red Dead and Cyberpunk because they’re set in _our world,_ or at least a version of it. It works because the games themselves are realistic, and they need to look realistic too. But so many games aren’t realistic at all! Tf2 had a unique style because it’s separate from our world with a whole new story. Red Dead and Cyberpunk are serious, realistic games that take place in our world’s past and future, so they need to look like they’re in our world. Tf2 is a goofy, unrealistic game where everything is different from our world, so it doesn’t need to look like our world, but its own world. In short, realistic graphics work for realistic games, or at least games that are meant to be in our world.
Have to disagree. I mean, mario Kart 8 deluxe (we don't talk about the dlc) is a gorgeous and very realistic game, but I don't think it's set in our world. I think it's mostly lighting and textures and mario Kart 8 nails it
"It's like dad in some king(d) of.. deltarune" "Ok, let's kill, some monsters" "Human, I remember you're.. *genocides*" "Clover, I remember you're juandice"
Games like Undertale, Cuphead, Fortnite and Minecraft all managed to stand out due to the fact that they had cartoony and more abstract art styles to capture our attention, which allows the teams behind these games to focus more on the story and gameplay
Not to mention realism in the graphics if not handled properly can make a game run worse while taking more effort over just being more stylized, leading to games that would run fine on all systems being forced to chug in certain spots that would’ve been avoidable if they just didn’t go over board.
This is why I love the OSC games. (OSC means The Object Show Community, created from a 2010 show named Battle For Dream Island which is still being made as of today.)
I agree with most of the comments, games do not need to be realistic. But then they are games that are definitely make sense for the realistic art style like cyberpunk, subnautica, etc. So it really depends on how the game is.
@@bingyboi6303 This one is more about appreciating the graphics and visual style of mouthwashing story is to hurt out feelings and feel good about it too

Using Minecraft and TF2 as showcases for style are fantastic, as it showcases how timeless styles can be, when comparing those two to any other game released during thst time, they still hold up to today's standards, because it is not an endless race with growing expectations
I think a game that does style amazingly is metaphor refantazio, every character portrait looks hand drawn, and you can feel the life and magic in every new place you go.
Yeah. But realism honestly just wouldn’t work in many Nintendo games because their characters aren’t realistically proportionate. Like the only Nintendo game I could see in a realistic art style would be is BOTW.
Paper Mario color splash: it has the most realistic art style of any Nintendo game but does it perfectly as you can see the paper, HUEY HAS MORE POLYGONS THEN THE ENTIRETY OF MARIO 64.
This is why I like Nintendo it escapes me to cool and wacky worlds instead of just random abandoned city that looks real something I already see every day

Just a idea for a new video for you Danno. :)
Not only is realistic artstyle something no one is asking for, but it can also prevent the user from literally being able to play the game, because of the storage size being inflated to somewhere around 90gb’s, all because they wanted to show off every face wrinkle on every human character. Not every computer or even console, is gonna be able to run some of these games because of its high file size or high frame rate thats going to be inconsistent, because it needs to keep track of so many things at once, so it will always slow down. (Especially nintendo switch)
I play games to escape reality because I know a cup would never fight the devil or a pink blob that inhales stuff wouldn’t ever exist but now with games with realistic graphics and just a life simulator is kinda disappointing
Pokemon scarlet and violet made the npcs look like an uncanney cross-section between realistic and cartoonish. The npcs feel kind of lifeless. The games have good character designs but they feel like they lack a soul
The amount of games that actually have good visual design is way higher than AAA games like risk of rain 2hollow knight, dead cells are some of the best visuals out of any game and all have very unrealistic, but unique art styles that fit the games really well
The closest things are probably the Metroid prime games, paper Mario color splash, and Yoshi’s crafted and wooly world. And for the last 3 they did it perfectly
Borderlands is and will forever be one of my top ten next to Minecraft and Pokemon. I first love it cause its a memory that id play with my cousin when i was little, and second it also has a unique art style and actual funny characters.
