PORTRA 800 - Film Photography At Night
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2024
- Welcome back to another vlog styled film photography adventure. Tonight takes us back to the historic battle grounds of Hastings to shoot a few rolls of Kodak Portra 800.
Film photography at night is always a lot of fun as you never know what you might stumble across.. Whether it's the perfect shot... or just the local drunk shouting at you to take a photo of him like one of your french girls...
On a serious note it does really make you take a step back and look at things differently. For example, the way certain situations are painted differently in a smooth artificial light can produce some amazing results and that's why we love it!

Your compositions are fantastic. You work the magic on Portra 800. You guys are unique in every way. Thanks.
Thank you so so so much!!! Can't tell you how much that means to us 😁 the Portra did most of the heavy lifting to be fair 😉
Take care, happy shooting! ✌️
Great job guys 👍🏻 I just got a brick of portra 800 myself the other day and can’t wait to shoot it for the first time!
Hey Lucy! Always loved your videos 😁🙏 Portra 800 is a beautiful emulsion! You can never go wrong with buying a brick of it either 😜 best of luck with it, we will be waiting patiently for your video on it 😁 take care, happy shooting ✌️
Good stuff, Tom and Josh. I particularly loved the "Jeans" shot and the pebble beach.
Hey George! Thank you so much! 😁
Hope you're keeping well! Sorry for the long waits, we've got a real treat coming up! It's our one year anniversary of the channel today so me and Tom treated ourselves to some goodies! Watch this space 😜
Take care 😊
Great shots! Love the compositions. I’ve never thought to use Portra 800 for long exposures. I’ve only recently started doing them and have primarily used 100 or 400. I’ll definitely have to give it a go soon.
Thank you so much 😁 portra 800 is an absolutely beautiful emulsion, day or night! Some of the results blew me away in regards to colour. Definitely one worth trying 😁
Stay safe, happy shooting ✌️
Brilliant as always! 😁 I assume you had to underexpose and compensate for it in development?
What I'd really love to see in one of your videos is a shooting of the Fawley Power Station in Calshot. If it is accessible.... 😉
Hey Oliver! Good to hear from you! Thank you so much as always 😁 we shot at box speed and metered at 800 iso 😊 it's such a lovely film stock! Oh really, we will have to have a look at that! We've actually got a HUGE power station down our way so might have to look into that 😊 take care, happy shooting ✌️
Great video!! I’ve always gotten super clean results when shooting portra 800 at night. Loved the image at 2:44
Hey! Thank you so much!! Really appreciate the support! We've always loved Portra 800, so beautiful at night! 👌 Take care, happy shooting! ✌️
Keep up the effort and one day your channel will explode with growth. Thanks or sharing
Hey Tony! We would love nothing more 🙏 the fingers and toes are crossed! Thanks for the support, take care 😊
Great shots! Love the light at 0:50
Hey! Thank you so much 🙏 appreciate your support as always! Take care, happy shooting! ✌️
Fantastic production on this one guys along with some brilliant photography! Thoroughly enjoyed!
Thank you man! Appreciate your support and hard work on the dev and scans 🙏🙏
Great shots! I'm curious.. how did you rate the film for night shooting? I'm seeing on some other blogs that people like to overexpose Portra 800 but they only show daytime samples. Thanks!
Thank you so much! Sorry for the late reply, not sure how your comment slipped through. We shot at box speed and metered for each composition accordingly using a light meter and adding for reciprocity failure as well 😊 I think it's fairly popular to overexpose for daylight, especially with portra 400 but as long as you're metering correctly and adding extra for reciprocity you should be absolutely fine 😊 I hope this helps!
Stay safe, happy shooting! ✌️
Really atmospheric photos! I've been meaning to try shooting Portra 800 at night.
Thank you so much 😊 that's a beautiful way of putting it! We really appreciate the feedback! It's definitely one to try. Portra 800 never gets boring 😊 take care, happy shooting ✌️
This video deserves more views. Great shots!
Thank you, it means a lot! 😁
This video was DOPE Josh and Tom... Sick vibes and captures... How can you download the music from Audio Library to use in your videos? I'm having some trouble with that part of actually downloading it from the links you provided. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Peace, Love, and Happiness!!! 🙃
Yo!! Thank you so much, really appreciate it!
There's usually a link you can follow under the video but they quite often remove them for different reasons. There is also a separate UA-cam site called UA-cam audio library that has free songs to download as well if you give that a Google search 🙂 hope that helps!
Thanks for watching and commenting! Stay safe, happy shooting ✌️

Using a point and shoot 65 sure shot for right now soon get s bigger and better camera, Question though with a iso of 800 do you need flash at night or at all? Using portra 400 at night I used flash although they came out nice had to do a lot of editing because they came out grainy.
Nice! The canon point and shoots can produce some brilliant images 👌
You don't need to, it's optional really. All depends on the end result that you are looking for! You can get quite creative with flash. For example having a flash with a frozen subject and then light trails from a long exposure after can look interesting, if that makes sense? But for the most part we only use long exposures for our night shoots 🙂 shooting 800 is a bit more versatile as it's slightly more sensitive to light when compared to Portra 400 or 160 for example 🙂 some of the shots in this video were around 1/60 or 1/30 of a second.
I don't think I've shot Portra 400 at night but I can't imagine it should of been too grainy 🤔 all of the Portra range tends to have fine grain. Unless it was shot at a different iso and developed differently?
Hope this helps! Stay safe, happy shooting ✌️
all so beautiful!
Thank you so much 🙏
What a video loved every second of it I literally can't choose what photo I liked because every single shot was 🔥🔥🔥 I would say this video is better than the Brighton one as the compestions are incredible
Hey, Andy! Thank you! This was definitely a fun one! Portra 800 is soooo good 👌
@@OnlyAnalogue I have some portra 400 and cinestill so I'm gunna have to do something good now
@@andywalczak7659 definitely run that cinestill mate! You'll love the results!
@@OnlyAnalogue I will do bro got to find a good location first
Nice pictures 👌
Thank you ☺️
What kit were you using?
Hey Don! I used the Pentax MX with the 35-70mm super takumar lens and Tom had a Pentax ME with a 50mm super takumar 👌 hope you're well!
Hello! are you using auto metering?
Hello, for certain compositions we used the meter in the camera (for more well lit areas and scenes) but for the most part we used an external light meter 🙂
All the best, happy shooting! ✌️
Looks like everyone's Nan's house 😂
May I ask how you did the metering?
Of course, we metered for some of the shots with the cameras built in light meter but for the most part we used an external light meter and a light meter app which we've found always works great!
We have a video on how to shoot black and white film at night where we talk a little bit about metering for certain scenes if that's of any interest to you?
Hope this helps! Stay safe, happy shooting ✌️

Would be much more watchable without all the plink plonk piano music, which seems to be compulsory in videos these days. Just the ambient street sounds and some narration would be 100% better.
We can appreciate that! We understand its not for everyone but not all our videos have the same style in music, it all depends on the feel of each video 😊 thanks for your comment and taking the time to watch though, we really appreciate it! Take care 😊
🤣 switch the music off or make your own damn channel
