This song means a lot to Neil Diamond. His maternal grandparents emigrated from Russia, his paternal grandparents from Poland. He's a great storyteller. If you want to get to know Neil Diamond, just listen to his songs. You're definitely right about his voice, it's one of the most distinctive in pop/rock history. His phrasing and enunciation are also impeccable. You can actually understand every word he's singing, unlike many other "artists". And besides being a terrific songwriter, he was also a spectacular and charismatic performer selling out huge arenas and stadiums around the world.
What an amazing performer, with a decades long career! When my eldest son was 12, I took him to a Neil Diamond concert here in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Ian was completely mesmerized! When the next school year started he joined the school band, first playing the trombone and then decided he preferred the drums. Thus began 16 years of putting together a band, eventually playing some local clubs and doing well. But to make it big in music you have to have some financial backing, so they eventually disbanded. But he gave it a shot, and I always sort of thanked Neil Diamond for that inspiration! Sadly Neil can't sing anymore because of Parkinson's.
Yes, Ellis Island is where the immigrants would arrive. They were processed, given physicals (quarantined if necessary), and shipped off to their future homes if cleared. That's no longer necessary, it ended in 1954, that's now handled in their country of origin. Ellis Island and Liberty Island are both part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.
My first date with my future husband was a Neil Diamond concert way back in 1972. He was just becoming known and DH didn't want to spend "all that money" on taking me to his high school prom so we went to the concert instead. It was awesome! Fifty years later he's just as good and we've been married 47 years. Timeless music. Thanks for sharing one of my favorites.
The screen shot in the audience was Lucie Arnez ( Lucille Ball's daughter) and Lawrence Olivia. This is from the movie The Jazz Singer. I believe 9 of the songs went to the billboards top ten, before movie was released
This is a scene from The Jazz Singer (1980 I think). It's a very cool film. Interesting story about a Jewish immigrant family and their son who wants to be a rock star instead of a cantor, as his father is. Gritty. Well acted. Great soundtrack, too. Thanks for reacting to this!!
Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty, which is the first thing immigrants saw when coming by boat to immigrate. These are 2 of the things you should see when you come to the U.S. And after that take a trip to see Niagara Falls, then to Philadelphia to see the Declaration of Independence and the Liberty Bell. That would be a great trip for you, plus you would get the chance to meet with your subscribers as well. So when do you start planning your trip north?
I have loved Neil Diamond since I was a teenager. He is a Jewish boy from Brooklyn, New York. He knows what he was singing about because all four of his grandparents were immigrants. A fun piece of trivia is that he wrote I'm a Believer that was performed by the Monkees.
on one live show, he says his Grandmother took a train like 1900 miles across Russia to Holland, then got on a boat to come to America with her kids.. Amazing story
Thanks so very much for recognizing the USA's special holiday!! Now it's your turn! Share something of Australia's music! I know you probably have already, but let's recognize your awesome country too!
You have to also watch the movie…it’s from the Jazz Singer movie..this scene is when his Jewish father finally excepts him, his non Jewish wife( maybe girl friend), their new baby and his music. Such a wonderful movie!

I saw him sing this in Providence Rhode Island in 1980. My wife and I sat a few rows behind Senator Ted Kennedy and his wife.
Awesome concert.👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My favorite of his, great story teller, thank you.

❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My ancestors came from Ireland and Italy. I am who I am because of them. ❤
I am getting old. I forgot in 1982 I saw Neil Diamond in concert in Ft Worth. That's Lucille Ball's daughter, Lucy, they keep flashing the camera on.
I have that song on a 45 and saw the movie. Neil Diamond is awesome.
