Neil Diamond’s exhilarating concert at the Forum on Thursday night was the 34th time that he had performed at the venue, the most by any artist in the history of the arena.
But that impressive number - which will grow by one when Diamond wraps up the American leg of his 50 Year Anniversary World Tour there on Saturday - was only a side note to the famed singer-songwriter’s rousing performance before a sold-out crowd in Inglewood.
With no opening act and Diamond taking the stage at 8:30 p.m., this was a performance that never felt rushed, but went by far too fast. Over the course of 130 fast-moving minutes and two dozen songs, Diamond’s performance (where he was backed by a terrific 11-man band and two outstanding female backing singers) was the perfect retrospective to his celebrated career. This was yet another “Hot August Night” marked by joyful anthems, soft rock hits and introspective ballads introduced and delivered with a master’s touch. Although his songs have been recorded (and often yielded commercial hits) for artists ranging from Elvis Presley and the Monkees to hard rock pioneers Deep Purple, this was a night where the focus was on Diamond alone.
Diamond, 76, continues to sing with a voice that has the range and elasticity featured on his beloved recordings of the 1970s and ’80s. Highlights came early and often, from the Latin-tinged soundscapes that enveloped his warm baritone on “You Got To Me” and stirring take on his first hit “Solitary Man” (recorded in February 1966) adorned with a sonically rich soundscape created by acoustic guitars and four horns to a potent acoustic-styled “Play Me” that found the audience singing along in every chorus.
There was a cohesiveness and flow that blended the diverse mix of songs. Well-known hits such as “Red Red Wine ” (a mega-hit for UB40 in 1983), “Song Sung Blue,” “I’m a Believer” (a 1966 hit for the Monkees), “Forever in Blue Jeans” and “Holly Holy” would frequently be accompanied by the generations-spanning crowd clapping or singing along, or using smart phones to capture memories of the familiar favorites.
When Diamond delved into deeper cuts such as the rock-styled “Jungletime” or reflective “Brooklyn Roads” (a song he delivered to the visual accompaniment of a parade of images and old movies taken of his family while he was growing up in Brooklyn, New York), the audience was thankfully attentive and locked into the arc of the concert. There were obvious cheers when Diamond did a mini-set of tracks from his iconic “Hot August Night” 1972 live album, the standout being “I Am … I Said” that yielded an extended standing ovation.
No Neil Diamond concert experience would be complete without a spirited finale. This night offered that courtesy of a radiant “Sweet Caroline,” cheerful “Cracklin’ Rosie” and tribute to his immigrant grandparents’ journey to the U.S. more than 100 years ago, “America,” the latter capped with Diamond warmly telling the crowd “Thank you Los Angeles and God bless America.”

The highlights of 2017 for my 60th birthday party, and going to a Neil Diamond gig in Birmingham. When I heard he was doing a 50th Anniversary tour, I thought "If I don't see him now, I never will."
I love all his songs. I found it interesting that I attended his concert on 8-12-2017 and watching the special eclipse today 8-21-2017, I was reminded of this song: You are Sun, I am the Moon, you are the Words, I am the Tune. Play Me. What a beautiful musician and touching songs. May he be blessed with a long life of healthy and happiness.

Neil's wife Katie PERSONALLY streams most of his concerts live on his twitter and periscope pages. (She told us she couldn't do it at the Forum because she had friends and family that she wanted to focus on during the L.A. concerts.) But you can watch almost all of his 2017 North American concerts archived on his twitter/periscope/website pages. His European concerts start in September, and I'm pretty sure she will be streaming those. She is an amazingly sweet and kind young lady (she's also his manager), she occasionally reads and responds (orally) to questions asked during the performance, and what she does is virtually unprecedented for such top-name talent. It's a great way to build loyalty for Neil, plus we understand that Neil's mom Rose can watch his concerts this way.

Every time I listen to him, I feel so sad, without knowing why. The words and the melody, and the way Neil sings...they all prick my heart in an unexplained way. What an entertainer Neil Diamond is, had the priveledge to be at his concert @ The Hydro, Glasgow, Scotland last week. A night I will never forget and I wouldnt have missed this for anything. Ik ben donderdag 28/09/2017 in Antwerpen in het sportpaleis gaan kijken,het was een wens om hem eens te zien optreden .Om dat ik vecht tegen kanker, en ik heb er van de eerste tot de laatste moment van genoten !! Zijn stem is nog steeds prachtig !.

Tuason ,dat u mij het besten wenst met mijn ziekte ,en inderdaad het concert heeft mij een positieve stimulans gegeven .waar door ik even mijn probleem weer aan kan .Ook al was ik voordien heel neerslachtig door een voor val van de verkoop van kaarten die ik besteld had bij Viagogo en waar ik voor twee tickets 379,30€ betaald had en pas bij het af printen zag dat ze op iemand anders naam stonden een Nederlander en deze kaarten maar 80€ stuk kosten en ik contact had opgenomen met Viagogo en geen antwoord kreeg.En dan met Tele Tickets contact heb genomen en dat het kon zijn dat ik met die tickets niet binnen mocht om dat het geen officiële Seat is Viaggo en ik nog eens twee tickets van elk 80€ heb gekocht het zicht was wel niet zo goed maar ik heb er van genoten tot het laatste moment ook al was dit voor mij een duren avond van in totaal 549,06€ maar geen moment spijt van gehad dat ik dit van mijn doen lijstje heb kunnen schrapen. En luister nu dagelijks nog eens naar zijn cd als ik het even moeilijk heb .Nog eens dank voor mij het besten te wensen vriendelijke groeten, Jeannine

I'm glad he sings You don't bring me flowers as a solo instead of having one of his second rate back up singers sing it with him.
I didn't like the Streisand duo, I only liked the solo version he did.
His back up singers are NOT second rate. They have worked with some pretty talented singers, look them up.
