My daughter loves her MK8 GTI autobahn. I've always been a big v8 guy but have to admit, her GTI is a blast to drive. Fun car!!. I would imagine the GR86 is just as fun.
The GR86 is a hooligan car. If you like sliding the back tires it's easy as hell to. I slide out of driveways and drift around U-turns, it's so controllable it's crazy fun. Seen a video of someone taking a new one to a drift course and actually following a modded 370z and s2000 while completely stock and on the prius tires (which is what I have lol).
very nice. I like the mk7/7.5 a little more but the 8 is still fantastic and is a thrill to drive.
LT1 needs work… and Driver Mod desperately… I’m tired of you guys not doing the LT1 any justice.
It’s probably not running at it’s true potential, regardless of elevation… Could need plugs & Opti, etc. I’ve owned a 92 LT1 C4 Vette, 95 LT1 Z28, and 95 LT1 Caprice 9C1 and they weren’t that slow…
Even my heavier Ram 5.7 pulls on GR86s and BRZs…
Also short tube headers make a world of a difference on those motors. Stock manifolds are super restrictive. You don't get more HP from headers but you get a faster rev.
Bro, you are right that Trans Am’s keep getting his ass whip. I have one that dude can’t drive at all
There is definitely something wrong with that ta. I have a bone stock 97 z28 2.73 auto. I went 13.9 at 103 in ohio. Not sure what it would do at a mile above sea level, but no way it would knock it down from 103 to 88mph
It's like they're purposely making older car look bad
A 5.7 RAM traps 101 mph and is 0-60 in 5.5 seconds?! 🤔
the auto 86 is a whole second slower than manual 😢
*"Budget oriented"*
*Costs in the 30s and 40 thousand dollar+ range.* 😐
Yeah especially when you can get a lt1 Camaro or mustang 5.0 for 40k lmao elevation be damned they would roast these at everything
The GR86 with the auto is a slug, not to mention the turbo making up the altitude difference for the GTI. Would be cool to see the GR86 vs the NC Miata you guys have.
Yea the gr in manual is faster from the videos I’ve seen as well
Driver weights and shifting prowess could be a factor but obviously they are close. It would be interesting to know how much of the spec hp and torque remain after 30 years on the TA.
Im curious to see how the N/A cars would do at sea level, where the turbo's advantage at high altitude stops. Cool show!
The turbo's advantage carries over to sea level - the incoming air is denser, so more oxygen reaches the chamber. Both NA and Turbos will benefit, so the GTI will still come out on top.
@@einfelder8262 I think he’s saying the turbo has an even greater advantage in elevation vs NA than at sea level. Which is true, as the turbo still try to reach a certain PSI.
@@SereneSpeed The turbo will reach it's peak PSI at both elevations easily, it doesn't have to "try", because the GTI turbo (and most other factory turbos) have more boost available than they are tuned for. The excess boost is wasted (wastegate) and the actuator adjusts the vanes to try and keep to a perfect balance of max boost no waste. Far more important is the oxygen in the air, which is the same for NA and Turbo at each elevation. At each elevation the turbo engine gets more oxygen, but so does the NA.
@@einfelder8262 Exactly my point. The turbo makes up for the lack of air density at altitude. The N/A doesn’t. 20psi at 5280ft contains the same amount of oxygen as 20psi at sea level. I’m very familiar with how it all works. I’m pretty sure we’re agreeing.
@@einfelder8262 also, when I say ‘try’, I didn’t say it doesn’t succeed. Just saying it has to try harder (takes longer to spin faster to reach target boost in thinner air) 👍
So glad you guys got tires on the T/A. Looking forward to future tests on braking, handling and races. I think Brandon's driving and engine health are still areas of improvement. Trapping 88? Something's still greatly amiss. Thank you for getting tires though, I didn't want to see one blow out with all the testing!
@@WW-wf8tu oh I completely agree. I gave these guys hell on every video for promoting such wreckless and stupid behavior so I had to throw them a bone for finally getting tires. I never understand why people roll the dice with the most important part of a vehicle; the only part that contacts the road
"Something’s still greatly amiss" yes it is, it’s called 5276 feet of altitude. It’ll wreak havoc on any vehicle’s numbers.
@@higg2156 I live at 6k elevation. Drive a 01 formula daily, it's not running 15s up here. I'm not losing stoplight drags to f150s, Honda CR-Vs...hell it's not that far from TFL I'll come run it down their track and show ya lmao there's something else deeply wrong here. The elevation does not add 2.5 seconds to the 1/4. If that were true, c8s are slower then Ecoboost f150s all over the Rockies; bullshit
@@tommyistommy well we know you are down a minimum of 60hp from being 6k in altitude using standard deduction hp x (alt/1000) x .03 and that’s not even including 20 plus years of general performance degradation. A new f150 Ecoboost with its waste-gate and variable geometry turbo would suffer no such deficits .Published performance numbers alone suggest your full of it.
@@higg2156 lmao alright man, yeah I'm full of it. Gtis roast mustang GT's and c8s also since it adds 2.5 seconds to the 1/4. I'll post up some draggy times and tag you since I'm so full of it, hopefully I can crack into the 15s!
I beg for more of this old trans am
For $500 the GTI can be tuned to 345 hp and 404 lbs/ft of torque. Best performance per dollar car around. Modern GTIs put all that power down through the front wheels brilliantly with a LSD and advanced traction control. It is not a MazdaSpeed 3 or SRT-4 lol
Ehhh the lt1 Camaro is the same price and way better at literally all performance related things
I guess altitude really does take a toll on natural aspiration engines. The GTi was affected too, because that quarter mile time is way off, but over 17 sec. on the GR86, damn.
Can confirm. Drive an NA car from sea level up across the Rockies and it'll feel really weak up there. First time I did I thought there was something wrong with my car!
the gr86 is an auto lol
Has that Pontiac had a tune up since the road trip west? I'm curious how many of those original 300 horses are showing up these days. We can give the GR86 a pass since it came neutered w/ the granny tranny. The GTI would be quite an appealing hardware package if they could find a way for every new generation to stop looking like a cheapo '06 Rabbit.
Awesome, a Ram-Air WS-6 Firehawk would smoke these little cars!
Today's FWD cars have come a long long way in performance and handling characteristics! Tire technology as well!
The Golf 7-8 chassis are not amazing compared to a Renault Megane or a Honda Civic.
T/A needs a driver mod or at least a salad mod. I know you're at altitude but 88mph trap speed? If you're going to showcase older cars at least make sure they're tuned up and running right...
Auto GR86 is slower than the Manual GR86 because of different gearing.
With the 2023MY, the GR86 is now officially slower than a Prius.
Still handles better than anything in its class.
Uuuuh no.
Having owned a GTI mk8 I really don’t see how you turned on heated seats when trying to change drive modes. Literally not by each other and you need 2 fingers for heated seats. Sounds like you’re just trying to hate the touch like every other UA-camr
An automatic for the GR86 really?
Wow these guys have gotten really good at these tests now. 👏
Meh. I don’t like all these tests not being done at sea level. It’s such a disadvantage to so many cars. They need to gtfo out of Colorado
@@sammyjammy6647 over 81 million humans live over a mile above sea level. Also way more visit places over a mile at least once a year. So it's good to see how your future car might perform when traveling to the mountains.
@@sammyjammy6647 I agree there’s always that mental calculation going through your mind to adjust for the real world numbers. From a car to car perspective it’s obviously all relative but I’d rather not have numbers from a car suffering from "automotive hypoxia"
Meh. I don’t like all these tests not being done at sea level. It’s such a disadvantage to so many cars. They need to gtfo out of Colorado
hyunDIE is trash and the only noise it makes is blowing up and catching fire!
Or they get stolen, thanks to social media videos.
It’s amazing how much of a toll being one mile above sea level takes in N/A cars. The regular 1995 Trans Ams would pull off high 13’s in the 1/4 mile, with a trap speed of around 98 mph. So this T/A was about 2.5 seconds, and 10 mph slower in the 1/4 mile compared to what the magazine’s of the day were achieving. The LS1’s were achieving 1/4 mile trap speeds of 107 mph just a few years later.
That's not all due to elevation...I'm sure the driving and state of engine are huge factors. I live at 6k and have 2 LS1 f bodies, I can assure you they are not 2.5 seconds and 10 mph slower at elevation. If that were true, I would be slower than a f150 Ecoboost, any turbo crossover/sedan etc...that's not the case. There's a noticable power hit but it's not worth more than a second...maybe a second of a half with bad air at high elevation.
I could rip off 14.1s like it was my job at ~2k elevation in my 95 formula. My 01 formula ran right around 13 flat, had a few 12.8s but that was great air and launches. Just had a lid, ported TB and good tires. Trapped 108-110. It's not running high 14s now that I live in Utah lmao
@@tommyistommy I realize that it’s not all elevation. I was more pointing out the fact that the numbers they achieved from the T/A was not a very accurate representation of what those cars were capable of. So probably a combination of elevation, state of tune, and poorly driven. That car should’ve easily pulled off low 15’s, to high 14’s at that elevation. They did mid 16’s at 88 mph, or about the same as a stock Crown Victoria of the same era at sea level.
Any turbo car will keep its hp better at altitude because it maintains a constant pressure boost despite the thinner air..it compensates for it.
Put a stage 2 tune on the vw and you'll really be blown away! My 2016 made 340 whp 410 wtq from it. It was a beast! It is definitely a roll race king against the V8 "sports cars"
Custom tune or ots? Those Mk8 Gti’s are making nearly 400whp on an ots stage 2 e85 map. Not crank, i’m talking about wheel hp.
Pretty crazy
I bet I would dethrone it
At the end of the day. Which one are you taking home. Trans am. all day. every day. every time. And it's getting a tune up. also those other cars are plastic fantastic. They won't be racing anything in thirty years.
41 k affordable car 🤯 crazy how much those GTI are
thats fully specced (at that pint just buy a golf R), picked mine up for 32k
If you guys were running on a Prepared surface I’m sure your times would be much faster 😂
Before watching- vw wins. By a lot
Maybe a 1/4 mile run between the 86 & the T/A next time?
Get Randy Pobst to drive that Trans Am.
The 86 was just as fast as the T/A wow 😮
Love that GTI
GTi is equal to GR corolla . Not the GR 86.
Back here on planet Earth, the Golf R and GR Corolla are on a similar field w/ the GTI living in pretend land or needing a warranty killing aftermarket tune.
Why do you have a guy who can't drive keep driving the 30yr old car he drove like crap last time and did again
Drag races between NA and forced induction at high elevations prove that NA motors run with 2 less cylinders at elevation. Poor comparison
Wow what I would do for that trans am. Those special editions are so rare!!!! I love LT1 powered fbodies been through so much with my firebirds I miss them both everyday
Get another Firebird. Life is too short to drive a boring car!
@@michaelm3381 lol right now I have a well built up 15 1le Camaro with is great but yea forsure need another bird
@@mikewozawski1634 that is a fun car. I've owned fourth gen Firebirds for 23 years and still love them. I have no desire to ever sell my birds.
it would be great to see the mini cooper s and/or JCW versus the MK8 GTI and the Integra (non-Type S) with the 6-speed.
I'd say it was the turbo plus dual clutch on the GTI that combined to pull ahead of the Trans Am. Take a look at how manually shifting really causes the Trans Am to start lagging behind @14:21. The VW dual clutch transmission has incredibly fast shifts that beat out the best manual shifts on pretty much any car.
PS: Not to sound like a VW fan boy, but I'd love to see how much better a Golf R would do.
They need to tune that Trans Am up that damn thing is way too slow. I own one right now and I keep up with damn LS cars ain’t no way in hell I would’ve lost to a GTI. And for the love of God, please get another driver. He cannot drive at all!!!
My first car was a vw scirocco Mars red with 13 x 6 205 60.
Gti soild head 1.8 with a s&s 4 to 1.
Fun factor is the most important.
My dads friend had the 85 ae 86.
Both are excellent and not either is better.
Compare is drivers enjoyment not speed specific. I'll tell you a miata is a better car than anything.
Every version from 92 has been excellent.
Firebird i learn to drive on. Sandbags and toilet.
My dad said if i crash this I'd need to explain the toilet to the police.
1980 Firebird 4.9 litre 301. Four barrel. That was a very economical. 34 i got just 50 kms/hr
Your test should be watched while you all test each others rides..
Do a cold day.
ive raced crazy.300 kms long with people who love cars.
Its light at first then full stuff than was stop for a chat and enjoy the experience.
As a car person i drive other people cars who love car.
Its like a ice cream. You can have a lick.
True drivers are very social and we let others experience our property because we all need to understand cars
305 HP in the TA had to deal with a 305lbs human. TA is a faster car.
Or maybe it WAS a faster car, but not anymore.
30 years of use may have worn quite some of those 305 hp
@@PetrolheadAEHG you don't lose horsepower of time like that, my c4 dynoed better than stock after 30+ years, this TA has been really slow in every test
@chrisodell6107 they are at like 5,000ft elevation, which kills n/a cars as far as power. That "305 hp" lt1 was likely making something closer to 250 at the crank due to lack of air density.
Maybe it’s just better off not to comment sometimes.
It's not tho, I used to go door to door with TA's through the quarter back then in my SHO, a V6 4dr with only 240 hp. TA's and Camaro SS's were overrated slowmobiles back then lol...
As someone who owns a '96 Z28 and a 2017 Golf R (both manual), these videos are always entertaining.
And if you ever need to borrow them, I'm in Junction. 🙂
Which is faster?
@@camaroman101 Both are mostly stock, so the Golf R is much quicker, especially at these higher altitudes.
Very different, but equally fun driving experiences.
Something is wrong here. F-Body LT1 cars had a nice rumble to them stock. The Ram Air Comp TA came with a SLP intake and even more aggressive SLP exhaust. You can't even hear the engine in the in car shots when the dude was driving. I think he wasn't pushing the car at all. No way these cars are 16 second cars even at elevation.
Only Tommy 😂 "THE PHALLIC 500... OUR AUTOCROSS COURSE WE GOTTA SLALOM A SWEEPER AND PRETTY MUCH A GOOD SIZE STRAIGHT"....😂 LOL .. 👏👏👏 HAVE A BEAUTIFUL TUESDAY EVERYBODY ✌️
Tommy , you guys should do two auto-cross runs, to warm up the tires. The run a third for time. That would be more accurate. Also I suggest that you add a sweeping turn. To return the cars to the slalom. Back down to the straight. Then the other big sweeping Turn. To a straight run to the finish line.
Good lord. $41,000 is an affordable hot rod.
My thoughts exactly.
Buy an S for 29k. Same power
That is the top of the model with DCC and DSG. I have an mk8 S model and it was 32k and that still has self driving and heated seats.
I have a mildly modded 15 gti and a 00 Trans am and i feel pretty confident my ta wouldnt touch my gti. Both are 6spd
Why do you say the DCT is a negative? That's the fastest you can get by far.
Turbo time for the Trans Am!😂
the 86 ant keep up with good old turbos, torque vectoring on the golf imo is better, it was closer from a roll than the dig.
Gti with a tune and exhaust and intake is actually a pretty dam fast hatch
The Fallon 500 gives a whole nother perspective. Somewhat heartbroken for the classics though
Yall are making the T/A community upset lol. These things are for sure not what you guys are testing it. Seen all the videos prior to this with the TA and barely 1 change has been done to actually make this vehicle shine a small bit
I think a MK8 GTI vs MK7.5 would be very interesting. The MK8 has the same power, but weighs 400lb more, yet is claimed to be quicker?
GLI vs Mk8 GTI
The power they claim is always much lower than what the engine is actually producing.
The automatic is quicker because of launch control and the very fast shifts
Here in the U.S., the MK8 got a 22hp increase to 242hp
@@FDNY101202 My GLi is a blast to drive. Pretty quick and handles great.
I'd love to see this test with a 98+ LS1 lol, or my shitbox 98 with a full built sbe ls1
You guys are going full carwow. Not a bad thing at all
Tommy is actually from the Czech Republic.
just came from the prius video, it was faster than the gr 😂
Another great video and what took so long for the tire on T/A. They definitely made a difference off the line.
i’ve been saying the same thing the hatchbacks are ugly idc how fast you make ‘em haha plus front wheel drive is never superior to awd or rwd ever.
i think the mk8 was overkill a mk6 dsg could prob take an auto 86
LOL the rear wheel drive Toyota driver puts it in track mode for drag race...
Physics be hard I guess
This shows exactly why I would NEVER consider driving a naturally aspirated car at elevation. These cars are much more evenly matched at or below sea level. NA vehicles suck way up in that thin air.
If I could tune an 86 like I do the gti I’d probably have an 86. But gti is so easy to upgrade and make it fast 💨
Hmmmm I'd like to see a Kona N on a comparison. That vehicle is about as low as I can get into and out of without tweaking my back; it'll loose out with no AWD, but still . . . . . . . . .
Why does the GTI look so MASSIVE?!
Don't put the gr86 in manual if you do the job worst than the car.
16.5 is NOT impressive for that LT1 car. Homeboy needs to learn how to drive. I'm also at a mile above sea level, and wayyy back in the day, on hot summer nights(7500 ft DA+), we were able to wring those LT1 6 speed f-bodies out to mid to low 15s at low to mid 90s traps STOCK. Even the stock 94-95 Mustang GTs stock were high 15 second cars at just under 90, and they're way down vs the LT1 cars. I would say the car is tired, but I'm sitting here watching homeboy drive, so that goes right out the window.
I do national SCCA Autocross events in Mk8 Kings Red GTI. The car dynamics are awesome and it has good power but the infotainment systems is horrible. The good news it has Apple CarPlay and I don’t have interact with too much
Who buys an auto GR86? And 5000ft will kill an NA more than a turbo. Sea level and manual it would have been a lot closer.
It sure would be nice to know the elevation and where they are testing😮
My Mk7 traps 13 mph faster than that Mk8 at the same elevation lol awesome... Throw a tune on that bad boy
Can you explain what "budget oriented" means because I don't think 41k is..
Was hoping the GR86 would do better but when I saw it was an automatic transmission and he put it on track mode instead of just shutting it off, the hope was gone.
Why
@@voltagemori690 the automatic transmission is bad. And even in track mode, the computer will sometime cut the power to prevent wheel spin.
Came for the ta that barely had screen time
Idk if he really knows how to drive the Trans Am....
Let me try that same race.
Wait, I missed it…are you guys on an unprepared surface and at mile above sea level?
You should find a Delorean to race.
You should drive both cars that way it will take out the driver ability difference
Good grief that Trans Am needs a tune up and a driver mod. I don't care if you are at a mile above sea level, that's pathetic for one of those.
Would like to see the gr corolla do this
In Toyota's defense it didn't lose ...Subaru did
What do you use Volkswagens real performance car the Golf R?
Just enough for the GR to jump time 88mph!
Can we get one of the kids in the Trans Am who can actually drive.
That's a big Elephant
Toyota was never good at performance. Tuners had to do what they do. Toyota made tougher engines though so they could handle the extra hp
Its a crime to even offer the gr86 with that automatic 🤢
At sea level, that trans am should run mid to low 15s, so right there with the vw.
Uh no lmao a lt1 doesn't run 15s at sea level lol low 14s/high 13s. It's not running right there's a lot of room for improvement in the driving lmao
@tommyistommy Upon further review, you are correct, and I stand corrected.
GR86 simply based upon looks. Not enough about the performance of the VW to get me past the bland looks. Sorry to say it but VW are too boring to look at to get my consideration.
I won’t lie as someone who has a mk8 GTI it looks horrible in pictures and video but when you get stand next to it you start see some the chiseled lines on the front and down the side and the all the metallic in the Red. But ultimately the GTI is nothing more then a small SUV does great with any size person front or back and has a hatch. Sounds like a small crossover to me 😂
Aside from RWD, the GTI is just superior to that 86 in just about every metric.
Nahhh u clearly have never driven them both.
@@LafemmebearMusic I’ve literally owned them both 🤣🤣🤣🤣
RWD brings the fun, so GR86 it is for me.
@@Fucklesticks I own a 986 Boxster S and a MK7 GTI. The GTI is just as fun.
I have had 4 generations of gtis have the pics to prove it lol.. and wanted to try something different.. got a 2023 gr 86 10th anniversary edition 4 weeks ago and hands down this is the best balanced car I have driven since my Honda s2000 I got new when I was a lot younger… the 50/50 weight balance and point and shoot steering is fantastic
I would think all gears on T/A are a little longer than that. I call shenanigans on that driver, or he really don't know how to drive Manual
Take this to sea level. See how much better the n/a cars do. My v6 bird with the 3800 runs a better time than that bird
use the ls1 version. stop with the old lt1 they were trash
Fa24 is boxer and not flat 4 🙃
Why is the Trans Am so slow? I know ya'll are at elevation, but still.
Meh, why did you use auto from the Twins. Them auto trans is garbage.
Erg! Why an auto GR86?!
