Rumor has it that some Walmarts are going to discontinue the larger (20lb.?) packages of rice... Not sure how true or widespread that is, but if you're looking for the bulk rice from there, you might jump on any you see! I prefer to store my rice, beans, and pasta in glass jars since its rodent-safe, air tight, and easier to portion-out serving sizes vs big bulk containers. Every time I buy the calories, I also grab the jars and an extra package of lids. Even though it's not strictly required to "can" the dry goods, I do vacuum seal each jar for the first round and I like to have the extras for their second life when I'm canning from the garden. They also could be great barter items... in the worst worst case.
Those are all very good points! Thank you for sharing some of your food preservation practices! I've always stored in large bulk containers, but want to move toward smaller jars/containers/mylar bags as well. Also, I have not heard about Walmart discontinuing the 20 lb bags... thank you for bringing that up! That's good to know!
I have canned dry beans. I put half a cup of dry beans in a pint jar, added water and half a teaspoon of salt. Then I pressure canned them. The beans did expand, but did not fill the jars. I will soak the next batch first and then can them. If you are going to buy beans, choose only the beans you will eat. I shop local grocery sales. They put the sales online every Wednesday and I search for the best deal. I shop discount grocers when we will be in the area. The last place I go is Walmart.
I love discount groceries, but unfortunately most of us don’t have them available to us. Walmart is actually the cheapest around me for now, but that changing soon with the move! I also love canning
Dry pasta is great to have on hand. Unless something happens that you have no water or way to cook. Buying some pop top pasta meal on hand may be a life saver sometimes.
Lol. I have never considered them to be in the same food group. Chef-boy-R-dee is not the same as spaghetti pasta. The first one is junk food, the second one is starch. Lol. To me they taste totally different.
@@ahomesteadjourney. My grandma made soup with a hambone ( can buy direct from honey baked ham store) lentils, celery, carrots and cover with water. Cook for several hours. She made it during the depression. Doesn’t cost much and it’s full of iron
Some packets of Great Value instant mashed potatoes for .98 cents. Add a small amount to canned soups to enhance the volume and flavor. I like the roasted garlic.
This is a really good overview on how to shop for basic emergency foods. You can also stock up on the dried tricolor pasta, the kind that is made from white flour mixed with pureed carrots and other vegetables. This will give you the dietary fiber that is missing from white flour pasta so is somewhat similar to eating wholegrain pasta but with a longer shelf life. Yes, tomato-based pasta sauces have dietary fiber from the tomatoes. However, if you want to make a pasta dish that has an alfredo sauce or a sauce made from just olive oil, butter and garlic or want to put cooked pasta into chicken broth or a canned cream soup, then go with the tricolor pasta for the dietary fiber. If you have a dehydrator at home, you can add a lot of veggies to your emergency food storage at low cost. Just buy those really big bags of frozen mixed veggies, load up the drying racks with the frozen veggies, place them in the dehydrator and wait an hour or two until the veggies are completely thawed before starting the dehydrator. When all the veggies have shrunken and are hard and crispy dry it is time to package them in jars or Mylar bags. The big advantages of dehydrated veggies over canned veggies are the dry veggies weigh a lot less and take of less space to store (really important if you have to load food into your vehicle and evacuate) and freezing temperatures will not harm dried veggies (canned wet foods will expand when frozen during prolonged winter power outages and break the seals on their cans and jars). A good stockpile of long-term food storage is insurance against hunger when times get tough. Be prepared not scared. Never put yourself at risk of a disruption to the food supply chain.
Wow!! Thank you SO much for all of the valuable insight and advice. I really do appreciate it!!! I look forward to dehydrating frozen veggies as you mentioned and storing them up! Also will be picking up the tri-color pasta - I never thought of that.. Thank you! ☺
A couple of things that you probably already know: 1) With foods for long term storage try to buy them in glass if you can, especially for foods that have a lot of fat. The plastics can degrade over time and leach into your food. 2) Buy tuna in oil. It's free calories, and if you're making tuna mac you can use that instead of butter to make the sauce. 3) Have some couscous on hand. It's SUPER fuel efficient to cook. Once the water boils you dump in the couscous, put the lid back on, wait for 5 minutes and it's done. It's a pasta (a lot of folks think it's a grain because of the size and shape) so it's fairly energy dense, and you can serve it with whatever topping; cheese, tomato, etc. I like it with curry powder added to the water, then served with butter, salt and whatever veg and meat you like.
Just found your channel. Binge watching now. I love stocking at both Aldi and Wal Mart. The peanut butter and many canned foods are cheaper at Aldi. Some other items are cheaper at Wal Mart.
Always like your shopping video. The only thing I'll add is that not all Peanut butter tastes the same. In a crisis you want care but to rotate stock you might. it's one itemI'll pay a bit more for taste. And salt Skippy, Jiff, and Peter pan when not on sale it's much more.
New subscriber. I’m so thankful that your video popped up on my suggestions. Great advice. Election day is a couple of weeks away. I got serious about preparing when the port strike happened and people were on the verge of panic buying. I decided when the time comes, I don’t want to be out in those crowds. I bought a dehydrator and mylar bags. I have work to do. I’m binge watching your videos at 2am. God bless you & your family.

@@bennington7660 Hi there! Thanks for subscribing! Yes, I love the great value honey peanut butter!! I have a jar at home that is almost empty right now 😂 It is sooo good!!! ☺️
On pasta sauce you are generaly a bit better off paying for canned saucenrather than bottled sauce. A few brands have both bottled and canned, on those thencanned is less apealing so is less per ounce. Other times Hunts or other off brand or low brand pasta sause in a can may be slightly more per ounce. Either way you are better off with the can. Cans dont break so you dont loose food nor attracts bugs and roadents. Also check dates on packed food. I ran big box stores for 27 years. We trained stockers and other employees to put short date product in the front of the shelf ev3n if it just came in today. Glass jars of food put in ziplock or vacuum pack bags with a few napkins or paper towels incase the jar breaks. Boxed food put in ziplock or vacuum pack bags. They are less likely to break and can add up to a few months to basic shelf life. Box product can also be frozen after baged but do no freeze liquid in jara or bags. You can message me through UA-cam if you have questions or want more info
You got peanut butter, I would suggest getting or looking at some sort of flour. You can make a flat bread to have it on since these can be unleavened bread. Really good video, and like another commenter said do your own math for the unit pricing. And I have found that with Walmart, using the app to find the overall price before checking out is a good way to see if the prices are what the shelves have posted. I have checked to see if the price on the bar code is higher or lower than the shelf price. If higher on the item bar code then I take a picture of the listed shelf price and get that price at the register by showing them what was there. Thank you
Instead of canned Veggies, might I suggest getting a dehydrator and when you catch frozen veggies on sale in the 5 lbs bag, buy them and dehydrate it. This is also a good option for fresh veggies/fruits when you catch them on sale in season. They do need to be cooked before dehydrating in most cases. Store in Mason jars and it will easily keep for a couple of years. When your ready for some veggies just add a cup or so to your soups and in about 20 minutes they should be plenty palatable. When storing scooby snacks for hard times, think about the calories your getting from your meal!!! Dont over look eggs either when they are on sale as they can be "Water Glassed" and easily be safe to keep unrefrigerated for a solid year or so. Rolled Oats are another good item to have in bulk on hand. When coupled with some canned milk, cinnamon and dehydrated apple slices, it can make for a good high calorie breakfast.
You just came up on my feed. Really great haul! I like how you demonstrate all that is RIGHT about longterm pantry building. I tend to shop Kroger sales for packaged goods and to supplement the garden, Meijer has amazing produce and meat quality. 😊
Grocery Outlet is wonderful. Warehouse prices and products individually sold. Dollar General using Saturday $5 off coupon and app offers. Love Dollar Tree but our store won't fix the air conditioner our weather over 100° most days. Don't want those hot cans on my shelf. We go to a wonderful Dollar Tree 45 miles away in the next town. Thank you, nice video.
I can’t eat ramen too high in salt. The cans of fish nope I used to eat fish but with the pollution in the ocean no thank you . . Love the peas. I really like the pkg of dry vegetables for soup and barley. I always put the rice and dry vegetables in the freezer for a week or two it kills anything like bugs from developing. We don’t want bug tussle soup 😂
I like the Raman in the cup. I add a bag of Great Value chicken cubes in the mylar pouches...@7:53...right hand corner. Use the chicken cubes only. Adds a lot of protein for little price and no wasting water doing dishes which could be a concern at times.
Walmart is known for Overstocking shelves just to get merchandise out. Make note of the price on your shopping list so no surprises at the checkouts. I have found price increases in the computer with lower price tags on the shelves, also I found $22.97 toilet tissue in the slot for $8.99 package as they were just shoving stock to get it out. The managers have to honor the lower price.
Really good info and well done video. Something I always like to grab, are those packets of onion soup mix and ranch dressing mix as well as beef and chicken bouillon cubes. They really add a lot of good flavor that most people enjoy. I also like Ramen noodles and I like to add one of those small cans of flavored Vienna sausages or small can of chicken. A little off topic here, but have you ever tried the smoked BBQ beans and brisket in the deli? If not, try them. They are the BEST I have ever had, even better than what I make, and I make dang good BBQ beans....lol...Keep up the great work.
My Dollar Tree has Ranch seasoning, 3.5 oz bottle for $1.25. I doubt you could make dressing or dip from it because I don't think there's actual food in there, but it makes a great seasoning for popcorn, salad, whatever you heart desires.
I actually haven't tried the bbq beans and brisket from the deli.. Thank you for providing that recommendation! I'll have to try it one of these days ☺ Have a great weekend!
I wash my containers that coffee creamer come in and then put my rice in there with a bay leaf. I then take plastic wrap and put over the top opening before putting the top over before storing.😗
Please remember that all processed food is not a healthy food to eat. We stock up on dried beans. We vacuum-seal the rice so bugs don't eat it away. My mom puts her 5lb rice in the freezer for 2 weeks to prevent bugs. She said it works great, and stores in a cool dark pantry still in its unopened bag.
La Moderna is a spanish name, thats why it seems foreign to you. La Moderna use be 25 cents before. 50 cents is not bad at my local store they sell for 67 cents. Im going to have to go to walmart.
I wish some of those videos showed how to stock up on healthier products. Yes, whole wheat pasta is more expensive and does not last as long but it's much healthier. Ramen is full Of oil, so I pick a version that has less oil but will be a little more expensive.
I do not know where you live but the walmart you go to charges way more than the one I go to here in Texas, also is there an Aldi's in your town shop there for alot cheaper foods.
The only type of spaghetti that I buy is vermicelli. Do not think that Walmart has a vermicelli. I have not checked on that lately but the last time I did they did not have any. I usually get it at Kroger's when it's on sale for a dollar a pound.
I think my Walmart carries it in the 'La Moderna' brand, which is in the Spanish food section at my local Walmart. Glad you're able to find yours at Kroger's!! It's definitely wise to stock up on the favorites when they're on sale! ☺
Though not completely nutritionally, you could make 3 meals a day for 4 people with $20 budget. Hit a few rollbacks, alternative products or larger amounts and do better. Easily get 1yrs worth of stockpile in 1yr. Example: GV Tomato Basil Garlic Pasta Sauce $0.88 for 24oz. $0.88 x 2=$1.76 for 48oz or large jar, giving a $1.22 saving. Larger bag of white rice provide a substantial savings, $0.11 and oz or $.55 savings. Total savings of $1.76+$0.55=$2.31. This would provide: 4lb vs 2lbs of peanut butter, or get 2 large can of green beans, or get 2 cans of meat, or get 2lbs of pasta, or get 3 jars of pasta sauce
I just can’t eat any nut butter that has added oil! I have to stick to more expensive brand that contains just nut…that would be Trader Joe’s for me! I also can’t tolerate canned vegetables except for pumpkin!
If you are really broke you can't use the unit price. If you only have 20.00 then it doesn't matter that the bigger container is cheaper per unit. I know you understand this. I am so glad that we already have a full pantry now, that hard times have hit there is no grocery shopping for me.
I go to walmart. Also king soopers and safeway. Which have higher prices but good sales and quality store brands. Some store brands are actually better than brand names. But I don't buy meat and produce at walmart. Can't tell you why, I just don't. I'm not much of a meat eater anyway. And king soopers and safeway always has nice produce at fair prices. I like quality for meat and produce. I guess I don't see that at walmart.😯☺💜

Heard the same thing
Are you moving to a new state, or just another area within the same state?
Thank you for all the feedback and advice! It's appreciated! Have a great week ahead 😊
Dry pasta is great to have on hand. Unless something happens that you have no water or way to cook. Buying some pop top pasta meal on hand may be a life saver sometimes.
Yes - that’s a good point!
That is definitely a good point. Thank you for sharing!
Lol. I have never considered them to be in the same food group. Chef-boy-R-dee is not the same as spaghetti pasta. The first one is junk food, the second one is starch. Lol. To me they taste totally different.
I get dry and canned beans ,pasta, other items free in my focus hope box every month.
Oh that is such a blessing!!
Lentils are very good for you! Can stew or hash good, meal in a can!
Yes! I have more lentils cause the hubby doesn't care for pintos. Keeping the pinto beans I buy for those who didn't try😊

Some packets of Great Value instant mashed potatoes for .98 cents. Add a small amount to canned soups to enhance the volume and flavor. I like the roasted garlic.
I use them to thicken my potato soup❤
That's a great idea! Thanks!

Very good idea

Thank you! ☺
Moving the camera around so much. Checking prices- I’m getting nauseous! Otherwise good info! Thank you!!❤

Get some instant rice to as water may be scarce. Put in air tight mason jars stores a long time quick to make.
That is a fantastic idea! Thank you so much for sharing that tip with me! I appreciate it ☺
I don’t longer buy canned stuff , I can my own stuff and love having water and dry goods.
Same with oats, quick can be used to make everything from breakfast to cookies to milk😊

@@mariahueck7281stock up on water
Thank you for sharing 💛
Just found your channel. Binge watching now. I love stocking at both Aldi and Wal Mart. The peanut butter and many canned foods are cheaper at Aldi. Some other items are cheaper at Wal Mart.
Hi there! Thanks for saying hello! I didn't know that about Aldi... I wish we had one close to us! I love that store lol 😊
New subscriber, Walmart is my go to for getting food for my family's emergency food pantry
Nice to meet you! Yes, it's hard to beat Wal-Mart! 😊
prices are getting way too high at walmart.
So happy you are being proactive! Thank you for the kind words and your support! Blessings to you and your family as well! ☺💛
Good video, new subscriber. Love seeing people get prepared.

I am in rural New Mexico, and my 2 closest Walmarts are doing lots of roll backs lately (on everything). Great time to slow down and really look around at everything you normally purchase. Great video, thank you :)
Thank you for pointing that out! I'll start keeping an extra eye out! I'm in rural West Texas ☺
Enjoyed going shopping with it😊😊
I'm glad! ☺
Thank you so much for this intro into prepping. We have young mothers in our family who are feeling ovewhelmed about stocking up and need encouragement on how to do it little by little. ❤

Aldi, Sam’s, Kroger
Those are great stores! Aldi is one of my favorites! ☺
Make sure that you are storing water for all of that dry food. Canned beans are a better option if water is a challenge.
Yes, absolutely! Water is vital for all things survival! ☺
Sorry had to turn off too much moving around, making me feel sick!

Oh wow! Well I'm glad you have that option in order to save! I have family in Canada and hear about the higher prices as well.
Be careful with the advertised unit price. I have found a lot of errors. Do your own math.

Yes, these corps are lying, cheating mofos! Also, prices at each location differ, and often, the online price is different as well.
And always ensure that the units you are comparing are the same. That’s another way they can get you!
Shelf stable milk varieties at Dollar Tree. I have even tried the chocolate milk. Just be aware of the dates

Wow, thank you so much for all of your insight and feedback! I do appreciate it! Hope you have a great weekend ahead ☺
Thank you
That is such great feedback and advice! Thank you for taking the time to share that with us all! ☺
Oil is a tough one because of the short shelf life love your video
Thank you for watching! My favorite oil for a long shelf life is coconut oil! Costco usually has a great deal on it as well ☺
Instead of canned Veggies, might I suggest getting a dehydrator and when you catch frozen veggies on sale in the 5 lbs bag, buy them and dehydrate it.
Good haul for $20!! I go to walmart $Tree & $General for bargains. I also go to our local bents & dents store for their great prices.

Yes! White rice is the ticket for long term storage! Thanks for sharing! ☺
Thanks for sharing that information!!
Moving camera makes me dizzy…
Good points made, however
Sorry about that!
My favorite is Costco, Aldi & Trader Joe's. Learning how to can meat, I dehydrate.
I love those stores! Glad you're learning how to preserve foods!

That’s a great strategy!! Good way to recycle the coffee creamer containers! ☺️
I could not believe the price on Skinner pasta. I remember when Kroger would run it on sale for 25 cents. And that was not that long ago
I know! Prices are going up quick!
When you're getting dried beans, get lentils. They cook really fast and you don't have to soak them and they're cheap.
Yes! I love lentils! We make them all the time ☺ Thank you for sharing!
You can skip the cuppa noodles cause if you look at the sodium, it is ridiculously high
I agree! It’s very high!
I have several pasta makers. When I get dry I get the pasta shapes I cant make myself.
That's awesome!

I wish some of those videos showed how to stock up on healthier products. Yes, whole wheat pasta is more expensive and does not last as long but it's much healthier. Ramen is full Of oil, so I pick a version that has less oil but will be a little more expensive.
I shop healthier options for my primary pantry, but for survival foods - I'm focused on longevity and caloric value.
Now do put this in rotation for food sources currently
👍

Thx for the unit pricing ❤

Walmart my favorite, Produce at Winco
Thanks for sharing! ☺️
Winco appears to have cheaper produce than any other store
This would provide:

2 large can of green beans, or get
2 cans of meat, or get
2lbs of pasta, or get
3 jars of pasta sauce

If you are really broke you can't use the unit price. If you only have 20.00 then it doesn't matter that the bigger container is cheaper per unit. I know you understand this. I am so glad that we already have a full pantry now, that hard times have hit there is no grocery shopping for me.
