Thank you for your no nonsense, commonsense approach to preparedness. We’ve seen many administrations on both sides of the aisle at least in my 60+ year lifetime impose tariffs and prices always go up for the consumer. Another area that people may want to look at are those items that more costly staples in their current budget. When you think of tariffs applied to petroleum imports, you have to take into consideration the end products made with them such as plastics, packaging, etc. So, while your laundry detergent itself isn’t more expensive, the packaging may become more expensive. In the case of China, the majority of our circuitry parts and electronic components are imported from China. A flat screen TV may be made here, but the circuitry comes from there. While not all people need to make big ticket purchases at this time, for those who do and are on the fence about it, if their budget allows, this would be a good time.

The tariff rate will go up to 100% on electric vehicles, to 50% on solar cells and to 25% on electrical vehicle batteries, critical minerals, steel, aluminum, face masks and ship-to-shore cranes beginning September 27, according to the US Trade Representative’s Office. I'm not concerned with food items, most are also grown here in the US. I avoid buying any food from China due to the filthy conditions over there. Other than those, buy some freeze dried foods now. I started in 2008 and the prices have gone up so much, it's insane!
Coffee has had an extreme increase this past week. My philosophy with China is I eat nothing from them. Why? If they can't drink their own water due to pollution and is unsafe why would you want anything grown there?
If you can't afford freeze dried you can get a dehydrator, and dehydrate your own purchases or what you grow. I dehydrated an entire summer's worth of hot peppers and they have been amazing, although you run the risk of pepper spraying your house, so you need to run the dehydrator near a vent fan! I think there are some considerations that you should mention. Our economy is strongly oil driven. Despite tariffs, the cost of food should remain the same or go down if the promise to drill happens. Unfortunately, corporations will use this as an excuse to raise prices. By all means, prepare now, as we should be doing anyway.
All lumber that is used to build brand new houses in the USA comes from Canada. So the home builders are probably going to cut way back on building new homes which should push existing home prices much higher
Well, maybe home builders should look at older homes that need to be revitalized vs. new. All towns have area that need a face-lift. Less use of so much wood.

Buy American and local and there won't be any tariffs. One of the items you mentioned on China's and Mexico's list is dairy, why would you be buying dairy from a foreign country?
The effects of tariffs on American foods is that everything will go up due to marketing. For example, during Covid 19, meat foods and related foods went up due to demand. When demand exceeded supply, people turned to vegetables for affordability. What happened? Vegetables went up. Cabbages previously 29 - 49 cents a pound skyrocketed to 2 dollars a pound. Beans went from 49-69 cents a bag is now 1.99-4.99 a bag. Once the price goes up, they almost never come down. Why? If the customer stop purchasing the product due to high cost, the market simply discontinues it. See Walmart. People boycotted Black Friday. They raised their regular prices. The market takes, it does not gives. The house always wins.
I believe Trump had introduced tariffs during his first presidency back in 2016, so this is not a brand new strategy. Cost of living back during his first term was a lot more affordable than these past 4 years with Biden. Moreover, the administration of Biden has kept many of Trump’s tariffs in place, and Biden and Harris have expressed support for tariffs in key industries.
A lot of those comments are media driven. These folks really believe that he will have us chained to fences - completely forgetting the fact that he ran the country for 4 years prior.
You’re so smart and beautiful your husband has to be a happy man lol yes I’ve been thinking about this we gotta start making more foods and meds here it would be a lot cheaper too !!
It will not be cheaper to make things here because there is not cheap labor here. Companies can pay workers in other countries way less. Companies will always maximize profit by minimizing production cost. That’s how capitalism works.
Any tropical products. Coffee, tea, spices, sugar, olive oil, vanilla. These can’t be grown in temperate climates. Olive oil can, but it takes a while for olive trees to mature.
Everybody that voted for Kamala go out and buy your stuff now, everybody who voted for Trump wait for Trump to be your president and buy your stuff then.
The tariffs are on imported goods that America already makes. If we don't make it, it won't have a tariff. We are one of the biggest producers of apples and salt in the world! There's going to be a coffee shortage due to extreme weather in the growing countries.
I believe that the United States Constitution makes it very clear that Congress has to pass a bill to raise taxes and the President can sign it or Congress can override the President's veto by a 2/3 majority vote in The House of Representatives and the Senate. What I'm getting at is the President by Executive Order can't raise taxes by Executive Order. That includes tariffs, because Tariffs are taxes. I hope someone will go to Federal Court and challenge all Tariffs put in by Executive Order. I don't care who the President is, no President should be able to put Tariffs on without Congress. I am not in favor of Tariffs because it artificially raises the cost of goods the consumer buys. It also will encourage companies to go to robots alot sooner than what they would to try to cut cost. The last time Trump put Tariffs on other countries put Tariffs on our grain exports and that crashed the grain market here. The government had to subsidies farmers or they were going to go out of business. Tariffs also create trade wars and that could lead to regular war.
We will have to learn to make and produce ourselves or we will be a nation of beggars for scraps forever. Nut up, learn and get it done or beg from other nations.
These tariffs could create a Great Depression 2.0 since industries are already saying that once the tariffs are imposed that people will be out of a job. Even retailers such as Dollar Tree said recently that they’d eliminate some items or raise prices again.
Clearly you only heard part of what he said … those tariffs are ONLY if these countries don’t comply. They’ll comply because they know it will cripple them if they don’t. Americans need to stop importing so much and support our own farmers.
@joette3477 well he didn't impose tarifs then. But he will now. So everything that comes from outside the country.... And that's almost anything.... You might double the price.
Trumps first term tariffs cost the US tax payers 12 billion dollars to bail out US farmers who exported to China. Trump raised the tariffs and China stopped all their imports from the US agricultural sector and started buying from other countries leaving US farmers with surplus grains and no one to buy them causing the tax payers to bail them out to the tune of 12 billion dollars….don’t believe me….just google it!!
Kathy Davis, if you can't afford to stock up, try your local food back. The food bank I volunteer at always has basic dry goods and lots of canned foods as well as frozen and fresh veggies. Folks leave with an overflowing shopping cart.
I will not eat any food products from China anyway so this one doesn’t affect me. I think I’d regular teach myself to go without the products from Mexico and Canada and invest in made in USA. I mean really no one in America should be buying eggs from China. The only product that we buy from Canada is toilet paper bc most TP is produced from the boreal forests. Not worried about the tariffs.
You have missed so much. First, it is not cost effective to ship eggs from China. Eggs come from local producers because of breakage and being highly perishable. You can't grow coffee beans, tea and tropical fruits in the United States. It takes a banana tree two years to produce fruit and, other than Hawaii, you don't have much of a chance of getting a plant to the fruit production stage. We don't have the right climate, the right soils to raise many of the things we just stroll into a store and buy without a second thought. We don't raise enough rice for our needs and the same is true for other crops. This is why those things are imported. If you want to grow more than you might like to halt development being built on farmland. That alone will make builders and realtors have a fit. Then you will need to harvest those crops. Most Americans don't want to work as field pickers. It is hot, dirty work and it pays poorly. I know, I work in agriculture. Labor cost, fertilizer cost, the cost of equipment. Have any idea what a harvester cost? A fortune. Trump's last tariffs cost farmers dearly to the point that he paid us money as compensation for products that we couldn't sell when our sources dried up in his trade wars. You should be worried about those tariffs because toilet paper will be the least of your worries.

(It’s a true vacuum seal system, it’s not like canning where you have to boil the jars and all that stuff.)

I’m sorry, please remove this comment if it’s not applicable, but there are several items that aren’t food related that I wanted to share because it was important for our family. According to a list by an economist I saw on the Associated Press, tires and household appliances will rise as well. It’s a good time of years to take advantage of those sales! I also stocked up on our vitamins and other supplements because some companies use ingredients from China and this may make their prices go up. Imported common foods: coffee beans, tea leaves, chocolate powder, bananas, pineapples, mangoes, avocadoes, vanilla beans, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, ginger, mace, cardamom, saffron, black peppercorns and real cane sugar. Yes, some real cane sugar is grown in the U.S., but a lot is also imported. So, as a general rule, if the food ingredient is grown in the tropics or subtropics, it is probably imported to the U.S.

I think there are some considerations that you should mention. Our economy is strongly oil driven. Despite tariffs, the cost of food should remain the same or go down if the promise to drill happens. Absolutely everything we buy is moved with diesel. Lower fuel equals less money to travel to your location.
Thank ❤you
Why on earth are we importing milk and wheat?
I believe Trump had introduced tariffs during his first presidency back in 2016, so this is not a brand new strategy. Cost of living back during his first term was a lot more affordable than these past 4 years with Biden. Moreover, the administration of Biden has kept many of Trump’s tariffs in place, and Biden and Harris have expressed support for tariffs in key industries.

Americans need to stop importing so much and support our own farmers.
Do what you can. Now.
The US government will have more income from the tarifs.... But you as consumers...... You end up paying the profit.
We didn't pay more with Trump's first term, so I doubt it will in the next one. We're already paying 50% more thanks to Biden..

We grow a lot of these foods already in the United States
Basically everything 😭😭
Unfortunately the prices are all ready going up
Spot on, you forgot Canada, maple syrup... Pretty much everything... 😂😂😂.. we voted
You should be worried about those tariffs because toilet paper will be the least of your worries.
i live avocados ! from Mexico .
