Don't forget during the production of "STAR WARS: EPISODE I" thousands of differently colored Q-Tips were used to create the Pod Race audience in the wide shots.
Was fun to visit the Star Wars moving exhibition - was a huge amount of items (including public stands) at display not far from where I live. Just so many props, from small to large. And lots of miniatures etc.
And while not a prop, the waterfalls in Episode 1 were just table salt poured from a container and then slowed down a bit and looped over the CGI environment.
@@ScottPropandRoll hahaha. Gosh. If only to show the asker of that question how stupid the question was. I so wished you’d lifted up an old shitty fishing net and said “probably $1.50”
Thanks so much for this Q&A! It's funny how many people get in to more desired industries by just being around and having a set of hands to help - it doesn't always take college or a life plan! I've been interested in longer content from you and this is awesome to listen to. Your videos are so SO appreciated and entertaining, thank you for all that you do for our enjoyment. I hope you and your family have a dream of a holiday season, and stay healthy and happy 💕✨
Thanks so much! I love this peek behind the curtains of props…I have dipped a tiny toe into props with a small school program, and I love creating stuff that reads well on the stage without costing oodles. Talk about craft time!! Keep up the awesome content!!
…you are literally a jack of all trades, you’ve done it all except the highly specialized work done by grips and gaffers but it sounds like you might have even assisted them in your rise up the ranks and would your appearing on wanted posters count as appearing on film? that’s a huge conversation piece that anyone would show to others lol
Something I was curious about as I was watching this: when you see actors stealing props from the sets and/or keeping them as souvenirs (such as hearing they did it during an interview), does that annoy you or bother you in any way since those likely belong to your company? Or is it common for actors to ask if they can keep them?
Thank you for this video. So informative. Your such a great guy. I love your Dad jokes. ❤️ 😂 So does my husband. He's still recovering from two strokes in January and he was really big on Dad jokes so yours help him to remember and he's been telling them again. Thank you so very much from the bottom of my heart. ❤️🥰
Huge fan of Machete and Grindhouse/Planet Terror. Love your videos! I've worked in theatre and film and have always found the prop and set dressing departments interesting.
plywood people made a comeback in 2020, in the crowds of baseball and football games…it’s low tech yet good enough so something from fiction became real there! 🤣
I had the same thought. The cardboard cutouts in baseball stadiums last year may not have been convincing, but they were charming. I watched a lot of games last year and was disappointed when the team I root for played in a stadium without fans.
I know this video's a year old but I just saw it and it reminded me that I was in a short film where I played a zombie and it was loads of fun. The movie centred around a zombie having an existential crisis about being a zombie and having to eat brains. I was one of three or four background zombies (I also helped do the makeup). The filmmakers had this fantastic setup - the main character is in the foreground having this voiceover monologue while in the background a couple zombies chased a victim through some tall grass. The victim fall and the zombies descend, popping up out of the grass a moment later eating the victim's intestines. They made the intestines by unrolling toilet paper and dipping it in latex, then colouring it dark. Because the movie was in black and white, they used chocolate syrup for the blood, which was great. We had a plastic bag with the "intestines" in it just -covered- in chocolate syrup right where the victim fell down, and it was great because you could lick your fingers and really get into the "eating" part but also not great because it put me off chocolate for a while XD never got to see the finished movie but I hope that scene turned out it was fun. Also, the two key items in making zombie makeup at home are rolled oats and used dryer sheets!
@@Iris-jw3ci I actually never got to see the finished movie! I was supposed to be contacted for opening night but something must have happened and I never knew. I can't remember the name at all, which makes me nuts. I wonder if it ever got finished.
-What's a prop that you worked hard on, just to get it cut on the editing? -Any prop that you have refused to do or provide? -Most dangerous prop that it doesn't look like it?
I'd say the most dangerous props that don't look dangerous are allergic items including baby powder. There is a multi billion dollar lawsuit on a brand of baby powder because it contains material that can cause cancer and the company knew it. Locations are more dangerous. For instance, it is believed John Wayne among other cast members got cancer for shooting a movie is an area that was contaminated by a nuclear bomb that was tested in Nevada.
I watched the whole thing, and i love it!! A bit of feedback though, this would really benefit from more dynamic shots like between every 3 questions, and even some background music too Love your vids, Scott, keep at em
First I though this was questionable, but then it was all good... Yes, a dad joke, terrible one, but I tried. Thank you for the video, loved every moment. 😊
For the next Q&A: Have any of your props been sold at auction because of its association with fame? Has an actor ever kept one of your props as a momento?
Dang I missed the poll. I couldn't think of anything till after watching my favorite show, iCarly. They do funky, funny stuff with fire and exploding things and lots of strange props. Was gonna ask about those and how they work😆 In the meantime... Im gonna learn what I can from this video.
How is it handled if you want to make a movie set in a different time period, like say the 30s? Are you able to rent the cars and radios and other period correct props? Clothing? What happens if you rent a mint condition 36 Chev and it gets damaged? Is there special insurance for this kind of stuff? It might take 10 times what the car or radio or wardrobe or whatever is actually worth to bring it back to mint condition. When it comes to custom props, who decides what the prop will look like?
I've always been very fascinated by props. Thank you for your channel and for sharing! One question before I go, but it's not prop related....it's set related. Is there a place where you can purchase movie set items? Or do they keep them all? (I guess that was 2 questions) 🤪
So how do you make organs no the other kind? Surprise that most of the time phones are real. However just saw a recent film where one Phone wasn't so I suspect most weren't, the sound was not correct..
We are watching the Jim Carrey version of the Grinch and was curious about when he is eating the glass bottle. I figure it must be a sugar glass of some kind, but it still seems really unsafe to chew on.

the most low tech yet brilliant idea for keeping things under budget i’ve heard: and it worked!

Hey Scott
"Prop truck"? Is it made out of rubber?
It's made of plywood and boards to hold it up. It only looks like a truck from one side. Without the boards, it's an unproped truck.
I was just wondering, if you are working with black and white film do you colour things differently?
Do you always get to keep the props or have the companies paid for them but just don’t want them. So you keep what you like?
