I would be nice if the cam core manufacturers and grinders would talk to the cam bearing makers so that engine builders can spec out custom oversize journals for the engines outside of the normal and popular Fords and Chevys.
If I tear down an engine, I clean but do a visual inspection. If I see copper on the loaded side of cam bearings, I check with a mirror for oil hole alignment before I knock them out. Once out, clean and felt for burrs, I lay my SnapOn machinist straight edge across the cam bearings saddles & inspect each one for any day light. I wish the bar was 5” longer but it works for me. I store the machinist straight edge in a hard case from a torque wrench so it can’t get dinged in my tool box. ASE Master since 78. Retired.
I use these bearings regularly in 99 % of the engines I do. The correct indexing of the bearings is more critical than they emphasized. They did some but not enough. Even on the old Mark IV blocks I groove the back side so I can index it correctly. If you are an Engine builder you should know this. If you are new to this, learn why the feed hole should be in the right place.
Since over sized OD Cam Bearings are not available such as for a Pontiac V8 engine 1955-81, The 1st check before Hot Tank and Magnaflux, Sonic Checking, is Cam Tunnel Bore Alignment. You can only Scrape the Bearing Babbit so much such as Durabond Cam Bearings. If its Off alot the Block must be discarded. People need ti be educated this is #1 Check done 1st. CAM TUNNEL BORE ALIGNMENT AND HOUSING BORE SIZE. IS IT IN TOLERANCE?

Well said!
Do you recommend lubricating the outside diameter of the bearing on installation? I have always installed them dry? AG
