Congrats to Eric, NK and all who sent a cam(s) in for online shoot out! Yes, bad folk everywhere with no balls. You are right Eric. Proud in my heart for you. ❤ ASE master since 78. Retired.
Erick You guys pulled it off, one hell of a good job. You work so very hard. Anyone that has never done this has no understanding of what it takes to do this type of testing.
As a non-engine builder, I am greatly impressed with the bold effort to conduct/generate this Cam Challenge information. Thanks, Eric, for the fabulous job.
Yellow Bullet and Speed Talk were both at one time were excellent resources. I don’t go there these days, too many keyboard warriors talking pure garbage. Instead, I go to the track, learn things on my own and talk to people who are running much more powerful cars than mine to learn. Have the blessed opportunity to talk to a former NHRA Pro Stock Engine Builder of the year in the early 90’s quite often. Thank Eric for working to keep people honest! Much respect for doing this campaign challenge! If you do a Big Chevy version I may try sending in a cam myself.😎
I don’t know man you might be a Superman after pulling this off. You did an awesome job! Thanks for letting us to participate and play along. I did not enter a cam but I did donate and it was awesome and fun to receive all of the test results via email and what not. Super cool idea you had!
I donated just because I wanted the data from the challenge. Eric ran a completely fair and indifferent challenge, and while I'm too old now to build anymore engines, I like many of you still want to learn. And the camaraderie during the event and afterwards was something for Eric and everyone to be proud of. Thanks to everyone who helped make this possible.
Whoever OP Mustang was, it was super impressive that they were only around 10 Hp and 10ft lbs low with dramatically less overlap than everyone else. I’m always impressed with smaller camshafts making big power.
NK has a real nice video talking about how he designed and picked the cam. For those that don’t know he’s a younger guy that has a speed shop and also designs cams for Cam Motion. He just designed it in his head with no computers and had it ground. Those are stock lobes Cam Motion sells to their customers every day (xa lobes). Apparently he’s pretty good. He explains why his numbers are what they are and other things he thought of sending. He thinks he could beat his cam no problem from what he learned.
@@dannymccarty344 Hi. I don't know if he just got lucky or if he is a freak of nature but he did win all categories hands down. Congrats to who ever he is. Andrew
@@dannymccarty344 there is always someone who doesnt know better and can not give credit where it is due. luck has nothing to do with it. his explanation is a result of his experience, that is not luck
you can literally order the parts list for this engine and have a combo that is tested. Its a repeatable race engine depending on goals. you could even make it a street engine where some of the other cams are pretty nice for the lower compression. Overall it covers a broad range of realistic data before you make other choices like gearing and drivetrain.
Thank you Eric for all of your hard work putting this contest on. And congrats to the competitors. Job well done. Funny how Mr. Camshaft Mike Jones likes shooting his mouth off on Speed Talk, saying how irrevalent this competition was, yet he didn't have the balls to enter. Speaks volumes. Then he locks threads on Speed Talk discussing this contest. What a douche.
The day I watched that Canadian and the young kid was building an engine all by himself with a mask on that was the last time I ever watched Nick's garage I made a comment and he responded they're protecting the community add those Canadians and socialism individual liberty goes right out the window
True, but they’re good guys up there, I’ve delt with the brother and I have customers that deal with Nick, I haven’t heard a bad word about them. They live in Trudeux country out where they are and its all Fk’d up
I’m really impressed by what you did as well. Thanks. Yes big thanks to Gary and his crew, and certainly all the entrants. 🎉 This was the coolest tests on cams I’ve ever seen. Every cam entered was way better than what you’d get off the shelf. There were no losers. Next up Big Block Chevy… 🙏
Remarkable y’all pulled this off… So many chances for sh*t to go south, especially for the unavoidable time crunch, to get it done in a fair / objective manner.
Congrats. Can’t wait to see the results. Now it’d be interesting to see dyno results from the engine blue printed around each cam’s strengths. Which that would be a ton of work and more than 3 days of dyno sessions
David Vizard was the most public and prolific go-to for reliable performance SBC info into the 90s. His airflow and test recommendations I believe advanced Engine performance in the analog decades. His theories and general recommendations are still valid (as the cam test shows) but detailed testing and computerization can be applied now for very specific applications. For those of us amateurs of a certain age, his airflow and engine records helped us go faster.
Eric, kudos to you and ALL competitors. I'm looking forward to reviewing the data. Hope to learn some of the secrets to cam design. Thanks for making this happen.
I really have appreciated the work Eric and the crew have put into the camshaft comparison. I also can understand your frustrations with people Eric. I have called you before about cylinder heads and I could hear the frustration on your end by receiving another call from another customer. Just remember. Not all people are nasty, Eric. Some are good and enjoy the service you provide and the content you provide.
Awesome job to all that made this happen. You need to apply for a Guiness record. The future tests you proposed sound perfect. By the way, get an oil pan heater.
Anyone notice that the winners had tighter LSAs than what is normally offered as performance / upgrade replacement cams? I think there is actually something to DV LSA formula.
not making excuses ...or sticking up for him i learned a ton from david vizard i bought his magazines and went to every seminar i was close enough to to atten and my engine progalram and porting program has a touch of what he taught threw mag think about that buy writing and pictures this man can teach you ho in a time if your from this time when no one gave you secrets head porters were far few inbetween and if he races he wouldnt build you something vetter then his in same class or buddys class david vizard is 80+ yrs old has seen more shit then me and eric put together has acomplished more then me for sure i cant say for eric thats on him i never knew who eric was until his video cam across my you tube then realizing i read about him years ago in engine masters... david vizard has earned his respect from anyone who knows something about anything we all have our own ways to spec a cam then there is the book cam crowd which makes up 90 % of shops in the world great job to all of you if we take all this data and try and build a cam we would take all top three and come up with sometui
That's what I'm saying. David was doing this stuff when Eric was in diapers. Eric will be more humble when he is 60 or so when his health and ability to do things changes
I have one question... Did you at least break even on the expenses? I'm hoping you made a bit to cover your time out of the shop, but breaking even on the dyno costs would be nice.
Eric: I would like to know a couple things. 1) Was there anything you observed in this testing that surprised you? 2) What was the difference between the average torque of the best vs the worst cam?
Thank you for coming to DV's defense and the way that you did it.. He's a good guy with good ideas and lots of experience. Unfortunately his poor health is catching up with him.
Agree with Eric on DV DV used his SBF database to pick the LS Cam. He is working on his BBC Database which is not going as fast as he wishes Given the garbage in garbage out rule he did very well. I have very little LS experience and no dyno or flowbench work, it came out as I was retiring. I did pay my entry fee but could not get a cam done. Looking fwd to the data. My simulation showed that for an actual build 1.8 rockers and an even shorter duration would work, higher compression for E85, less for pump gas and I would have to consider the fuel pull thru that large overlaps cause. Not a big LCA fan and I no longer port heads
Suggested test: No holds barred any-valvetrain-you-want cam shootout for three catagories: best from 0 to 2500, best 2500 to 6500, best from 6500 to what the heck ever.
Vizzard has balls for claiming he knows far more than warren Johnson. I never ever claimed Vizzard wasn’t knowledgeable. I just think he over promotes himself. His ego is off the charts. Seems as though everyone’s egos humbled down as it came closer to dyno day. Vizzard found his way of saving face by claiming he was simply wanting to promote a new shelf cam with tooley.
NK already has their winning camshaft for sale on their site. Totally awesome.
Yes, and I contacted them yesterday to update the listing to list the specs and they replied and updated the info. Great cam.

It sounded like Richard Holdner during his live chat yesterday was questioning the winning cam making both peak hp and peak tq.
