Metatarsalgia is a condition involving pain and inflammation of the metatarsal region of the foot, also commonly referred to as the "ball of the foot".
If you have metatarsalgia you may experience sharp or aching pain at the ball of the foot, pain around the second, third, fourth, or big toe, or a sensation similar to having a pebble in your shoe. Pain is often worse when you are walking, running, or jumping, and subsides when you rest.
There are several easy and effective home treatments for metatarsalgia including icing, rest, and arch support or shoe inserts.

I'm trying to lose weight. One day, I went out for a 5 KM walk. The next morning, I noticed the a sharp pain under the ball of my foot, especially upon each step I took.

Yes! I do a lot of walking as an auto- hauler driver. I walk serval miles some days. And I like to run. And lift. I'm 36 and always had good strong feet and can jump off most elevated objects. But just a few days ago for the very first time I've unfortunately experienced this new pain that won't go away and now it's become personal and I'm dreading to walk out run because I'm reminded of this painful sensation of waling on a pebble. My right foot is just fine. What could cause this?

You nailed it & it's damn painful. Ice really does help as well as anti inflammatory meds.

I have had this and it is horrible. The way I cured myself was by stretching my calf muscles. As silly as it sounds, I have no more pain, 8 years now.
Step on a curb, a block or anything which can elevate the front part of your foot. Now lean forward keeping your heal on the ground. This will stretch your calf muscles which will pull on your Metatarsals and give to you relief from the burning sensation.
Also, by new shows. More than likely the toe box of your shoe is too narrow for you. If I wear Nikes for one day, the pain comes back. I now wear New Balance tennis show as the toe box is wide on almost all of their shoes, For men's dress shoes, I buy Born's and Eccos.
You will always have to do maintenance on your feet. Make this a daily routine, in the shower or pumping gas, anywhere you can find something to elevate the front of your foot.

I am pretty sure I have a severe case of Metatarsalgia on my right foot. I went to see a specialist and he recommended aetrex memory foam Orthotics and some Physical Therapy. Physical Therapy is treating me for Plantar Fasciitis. They also recommended I wear Metatarsal pads, which I have tried. Without a metatarsal pad and using memory foam insoles the 3rd and 4th toe on my foot feels tingly every time I walk. As soon as I put a Metatarsal pad on and walk most of my toes becoming tingly, then my foot feels like it's swelling up. I have gotten MRI /Xrays/had EMG/had cortisone injection in Plantar fascia area a few weeks ago of/on my right foot and all test came back negative for any kind of Neuroma or Nerve Damage. I also had an MRI of my back as suggested by my podiatrist and read by an orthopedic surgeon for backs and he stated that my foot pain is not related to my back. I tried the Orthotics that my Dr. suggested, but they made my feet red/tender and my toes tingly/numb. I am really at a lose for what to do to make me feel better any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe it's time for surgery ? how you feel now?. i have the same problem with right foot, today i bought metatarsal pads and i feel much better with walking. as i guess metatarsals don't touch the ground cuz pads lift them up and no more pain.

Hey I think I might have this - the location of the pain is correct and I've recently started road running. One question though - is it normal for the pain to be worse first thing in the morning or when you first stand up after prolonged sitting?

I am having that since November of 2020. It's hard and other people thing I am exaggerating. I also have swelling on top of my foot and I have to put ice on it. I was told to rest and put ice. But who in this world with an ADHD kid and an autistic kid would be able to rest? It's hard, and also the cleaning and cooking. It's just not easy. I hope everyone gets better.

+caminla Hi, I wish its been 18 months now quite surprised to be honest and still it gives me a great deal of psin standing up for longer than 2hours or trying to run/walk. I did a 5km run the first time last week which felt good to be running again but I had pain later that night and icepacks. How about you? How long have you had it and have you found anything that works?
