I had never heard of this until this year. Listened to one online last night, and agree. Beautiful, moving and thought provoking. I'm learning that every facet of traditional Catholicism is.
Dr Marshall, this is my first year singing the Tenebrae. I have to say that these chants are some of the more difficult but highly decorative ones. It is very beautiful and I am humble to be among the highly skilled men in the schola. We sang Miserere Mei Deus by Allegri with a few ladies at the very end as well, per pre-55 rites. It was heavenly, the soprano did a great job. I cried. May the name of Jesus be forever blessed!
Another great explanation for people like me who don’t know what they don’t know. Please consider a series on these beautiful traditions of the Faith. It’s truly amazing. Thank you Taylor. God love you!
Tenebrae is one of the most beautiful liturgies! It’s possible to do it without the fancy music at all, and it’s still beautiful. It doesn’t have to be a huge production. You can even do it spoken or with Plainchant.
It is sad that so many traditions and treasures and beauty of our Catholic faith have been suppressed and forgotten. I am a 62 year old cradle Catholic ignorant of my faith in spite of 16 years in Catholic schools and university, therefore I never passed this treasure on to my children. Thank you Taylor Marshall pls pray for my children.
I'm 64, so you and I experienced similar things growing up. There is much I've had to learn about the Faith that I didn't learn in the 14 years in Catholic schools. I am thankful for Dr. T M for teaching us. Ave Maria, Teresa
Thank you Dr. Marshall for praising the service done at St.John Cantius, in Chicago. They do high Catholic at this beautiful Church. It was the church that played a key role in my returning to the traditional Catholic Church.
Thank you for facilitating our going deeper into the wonderful traditions of our Catholic faith. You are a born teacher just so anointed for this mission as a time of darkness enshrouds us. What a sublime blessing our faith is!
In our conservative Lutheran - Missouri Synod we have a Tenebrae service each Good Friday night. We extinguish a candle after each reading....the church lights gradually darken, finally the lone candle is carried out...then there is the sound of a Bible being slammed shut. Boom! After a minute, the lone candle is carried back in, placed on the empty altar, and everyone leaves in silence and darkness.
Watching his videos are addictive because of what you said and you can’t help but learn so much. Even people who’ve been Catholic all their life finds things out they’ve never heard of.
I attended Tenebrae once in my NO parish. Our Priest was an Oblate and he brought beautiful Easter and Christmas traditions back to life. The darkness of the Church and the solitary burning candle was so sacred. I also remember how it was prior to the change of the Latin Mass- fasting from midnight until holy Communion the next day.
I am almost 55 and experienced my first Tenebrae 2 years ago snd it was so beautiful! The parish I have belonged to since I was 10 years old is Novus Ordo but I am so thankful our current priest has brought back some of these beautiful traditions. I had my then 4 year old granddaughter with me and she loved it as well! Today at noon we will have the Stations of the Cross. At 3pm we will have our Good Friday service then tonight at 7:30pm we will have our Tenebrae.
Yeah, I don’t think having an 7PM Holy Thursday Mass and a 3PM Good Friday necessarily gets in the way of Tenebrae. One parish I visited on Holy Thursday was having Compline at 11PM, so Tenebrae COULD be done still with these modern times if the priests want to
Just experienced my first Tenebrae today! It was beautiful! I feel very honored to experience it today and hopefully tomorrow morning! Blessings to all!!
Hey St. John Cantius is my parish! I was at Tenebrae. It really was a wonderful service as always (anyone interested, they have the video up on their UA-cam channel)
Experienced my first Tenebrae today, and what an amazing experience. Thank you for a great explanation, and God bless ICKSP for helping keep this tradition alive
Thanks so much, Dr.Taylor Marshall. We need all the explanations for all our Catholic Traditions. May you and your family have a Blessed and Joyful Easter 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
Dr. T......I had never experienced covering all the statues in church before until I moved to Houston......I go to Holy Rosary in Midtown Houston, and it is one of two churches that has Latin Mass! The Dominican Friars have run this church since it was built in 1919......When I saw you explain this on previous podcast, I realized what everything meant! I am watching Holy Thursday Mass at work, and I thought I would send a screen shot....Oh and this little gem of a church in the middle of Houston is trad.....we receive communion at the altar rail and say the St. Michael's prayer before we leave mass...... Well, it won't let me post the screen shot but the purple coverings are everywhere....over St. Joseph, Mary, St. Dominic, St. Martin de Porres, etc.
Thank you Dr. Marshall for this video. I really enjoyed St. John Cantius Tenebrae so much. It's always a joy to experience traditional Catholicism. God bless you and the family.
Dr. Taylor please forgive me for judging you sometime ago in the comment section. I appreciate all that you do to build up our Father's Kingdom. Please pray for me and my family. God bless you and your family.
Fourtern years ago, after being a Nazarene for 28 years God led me to the Anglican Church of North America a week before Holy Week. They had 24 (including children's) services from Palm Sunday until Easter Tuesday. I experienced Easter like never before that year!! Tenebrae is their Wednesday night service - it is a powerful service and ends in complete darkness. They have a world-class organist and 30 member choir who weekly sing their songs in Latin. In 2021 God called me to the Catholic Church. I came in at the Easter Vigil, hours before my 72nd birthday. I attend the TLM noon Mass but continue to attend the 10 - 11:30 am Anglican service before Mass because of their incredible music and traditional service. Leaving the Anglican service I am on "Cloud 9" driving to my TLM! I feel like I've been at the Latin Mass in English. Of course I no longer take Communion but their Canon of the Mass is similar to the Latin Mass only in English. Our Latin Mass has a dedicated organist and schola. The organist plays 2 hymns (one before and one after the Mass) but most of the congregation do not participate in the singing and somtimes the hymn is cut short. One thing I've learned since becoming Catholic is that most Catholics don't like to sing. I still go to Holy week at the Anglican church because my church has all the holiday services in the Novus Ordo form. Sometimes my friends and I will drive 60 miles to attend the holiday Masses in Latin.
Thank you for your videos. You are an excellent teacher and I learn so much from you about the Roman Catholic faith. I love watching these and learn the things to seek out. I remember some of this from a long time ago but have forgotten a lot because it has not been practiced in the churches today. Thank you again.
Thanks soo much for this Dr Taylor Marshall, I experienced my first Tenebrae this year in Sydney- FSSP Maternal Heart of Mary Parish.....AMAZING! The darkness, beautiful singing, incense.... We started with a bonfire outside, entering the dark church, with our lit candles for the whole night All the kids and babies were excited! 1 family- their kids were already in their PJ's and sleeping bags in church, so cute! When the last candle was blown out, I got an exciting shock at all the kids and adults making noises- I joined them hitting our pews really loud, then leaving in the dark- You're right it was Hautingly Beautiful, something I never expected, I can't wait for the next Tenebrae!
What profound traditions we Catholics have inherited. Praise be to God. Thanks as always for educating us Dr. Marshall. I certainly have learnt SO much ever since I became a follower of your channel. A Blessed and Holy Easter to you, your family and to all the faithful.
Thank you Dr Marshall explaining about Tenebrea. We had it at our church but did not go. I knew about Matins and Lauds but never heard about the candles. Sounds beautiful!! Wonderful explanation of Holy Week. Our Priest uses the 55 missal and we have the books as well. We have a Family that does the all the singing. They are wonderful! A Blessed Triduum and A Very Holy Eastertide to you and your family!!!✝️🙏🌷
Thanks Dr.Marshall for this divine Knowledge which I've never known from our Novus Ordo churches for there hasn't been any Latin Churches nor Latin Masses in our country (Phil) for 61years.
Guys you should all listen to the Easter Hallelujah by Cassandra Star and her sister Callahan on UA-cam. I can't listen to it without tears in my eyes. It will really bring you in to the spirit of Easter. I hope you all have a spiritual and peaceful Easter. God Bless.
I retired in Hibbing Minnesota but been to cantius for 13 years or so, always reverent and on the tongue communion, I still support them and the money you send does not go to the diocese because there a religious order.. I too watch there mass every Sunday since mass up here is total feminist agenda and I can not stand it. God bless you Dr.
I attended my first Roman Rite G Friday Mass at 3pm and i loved this time. Novus Ordos always r at 7pm, now I've been blessed always with a paid Holiday for G Friday, 3pm was Holier and the Mass was powerful way better but i had time to go home and pray and read and morn. Finally around 630 ish i watched of course the passion while still on a hard fast. Much better at the actual hr of our Lord 3pm. Happy Easter to all!
Thanks for explaining this in such depth! I am grateful for this channel!! I encourage everyone to become a Patreon Member if you can, we need more content like Dr Marshall gives! I’m a Patreon, so I’m not just talking about it
We said all decades of the Rosary and the Stations of the cross at a late term abortion clinic this morning, a good turn out but nothing like it should have been. Many children were slaughtered, it was heartbreaking.
I've attended a Novus Ordo Parish my entire life, and every Holy Week we have Tenebrae, I was not aware it was something that had "gone by the wayside"
when I was little in the 50's our 1st communion was in 2nd grade so I was 6yrs old (started school when I was 4) we had to fast from midnight. My mother was very strict about that. on Good Friday we were in church Latin Mass all afternoon. Later after Norvo Odus GF was much shorter my mother would have us be silent and sit quietly all afternoon. when I was growing up businesses all closed from 12 to 3 on GF. people stayed inside during that time. I go to St Joseph shrine in Detroit. Tenebrae was observed in a very traditional form. Amazing to see from such young men priests.
I'm very blessed in my home city to attend Tenebrae in either the Dominican Priory or the Oratory of St Philip in Oxford UK but I do wish it was in the dark rather than 9am.
This is amazing! Working in Corrections it is difficult (but I’m trying) year round to follow the church’s customs and traditions. On top of that, having three boys under 5 years old. Definitely would love to participate/ observe the Tenebrae next year. (God willing)
I remember mother talking about Holy Communion in the old days. She as a child received Communion once a month and then would feel faint from fasting even from water, remember she was a child. I try and fast 3 hours as an hour is nothing. It's not even an hour from start of Mass but receiving Communion so basically don't have anything while walking or driving to church! I think 3 hours is ideal and personally my own discipline.
It is neat stuff like this that keeps people coming back for more for their spiritual life. The Byzantine Family has the reading of the TWELVE GOSPELS for Matins/Lauds for Holy Thursday/Good Friday overnight.
@@Morilix I pray The Surrender Novena, by Fr Dolingo, ongoing. It is a wonderful help for anxiety or distress. I tried to post the link but it disappears each time I attempted to note the site. Please search for it on the internet.
Please, oh please, Dr. Marshall, give us an Easter gift. Do a presentation on the Breviary, the Divine Office or the Liturgy of the Hours. Deacons are also obligated to observe them. Let us invite all the Laity to participate, especially NOW! I do think that most Clerics do not do this any more, which would explain so much. Even Cardinal Richelieu, would spend a fortnight alone at his country estate, after New Year, reciting a year's worth of Readings. Truly, Hypocrisy is the Lip-Service, Vice pays to Virtue. We have now managed to Out-Herod the Hypocrites!
Sadly we can’t get to our churches as only so many allowed due to Covid but I love listening to you Dr Marshall. Honestly I learn far more from you than my church anyway.
Thank you so much. I remember my mom and grandma taking me to the service which featured Gregorian chants. Have a beautiful peaceful and blessed Easter. ❤️✝️
I love all this history u give us taylor, i soak all this up and admire ur pursuit for this treasure trove of ancient history. U are my ace in the hole, u do all the heavy lifting and i appreciate it. Happy Easter brother!!
There's Tenebrae in my 1962 missal but I can't find it in the Fr. Lasance missal. I was hoping for an older version than 1962. Disappointed. However, I've watched several videos online and found some really good ones. Thanks for sharing.
I was exhausted after Adoration of the Cross so disappointed I could not attend in person due to the timing mainly but I went home turned off all the lights and lit some candles and joined SSPX Seminary for theirs that was live streamed.

I experienced a Tenebrae service about two years ago at my Scottish Episcopal Church.
It is neat stuff like this that keeps people coming back for more for their spiritual life.
The Byzantine Family has the reading of the TWELVE GOSPELS for Matins/Lauds for Holy Thursday/Good Friday overnight.
Never have I seen this sounds beautiful I will look into it this coming year. Hopefully I find somewhere around me where it's practiced. ⛪⛪⛪
Never heard of this, sounds amazing! Will definitely go next year!!
I've been having anxiety lately bc I'm scared there is no heaven but I know once I'm in heaven I will feel save no more anxiety
Pray the Surrender Rosary and novena. I can find them for you if you can't on internet.

Happy Easter to you and all your family!!!
I can't get a ride they have the hole thing at my parish it made this 63 yr cradle trad weep thank you my dear brother in Christ
Thank you for this substantial content, Dr Taylor. Blessed Easter to you !
Thank you for taking the time to explain and enlighten us on our Christianity
Thanks, I needed this video
I’ve only been to one tenendrae.. it was quite memorable. it was at an Anglican convent.
God Bless you!
Thank you for sharing, happy holy Easter.
It's a beautiful week.
Thank you and God bless!
It was really beautiful how the Holy Week schedule was in 1939.
Yes, we need to 'return to tradition'.
This is really fantastic! A very blessed and holy Good Friday to everyone.
I was exhausted after Adoration of the Cross so disappointed I could not attend in person due to the timing mainly but I went home turned off all the lights and lit some candles and joined SSPX Seminary for theirs that was live streamed.
I never knew what Tenebrae was until today
Same here. 🤔
