Driving my Invacar 250 miles to the NEC Classic Motor Show!

- It wasn't a direct route, and we made some very interesting visits along the way, taking in The Great British Car Journey and Peak 2CV! What is it like driving a plastic contraption built for wheelchair users on today's roads?

As the full time employer of an electric wheelchair which I have named "The Cripples Cart", I see no issue whatsoever with you calling TWC an Invalid Carriage, because that is what it is. Very few disabled people get upset about the name, and to be honest we don't want non-disabled people being offended on our behalf. If we want to be upset we'll chose our own subjects to get upset about. Anyhow, thats my rant for today. I hope you have fun at the weekend and even more on the drive home.
I love these epic adventures with TWC. Keeping her going is a wonderful achievement, Ian. As is driving all that way in car really not built for it! 🙂😎
I agree; local cafés being cast aside for multi-national conglomerates selling crap to the masses, is a loss for all concerned.
@Alfred Wedmore Hear! Hear! Word of mouth is the best publicity. When people get together, they talk.
I was disgusted by Greggs that set up a new store literally opposite a local bakery in Tenby who did freshly baked bread, cakes and pasties. They were always busy in the summer months but as soon as the Greggs opened up people flocked to the brand they knew just because of adverts on TV.
I'm pleasantly surprised about how well it motors along at a decent turn of speed.
Great to see TWC have another adventure. For such a small car she's got bags of character
When Hubnut first bought this car I thought he'd gone barking mad, but now I love seeing it driven it looks like so much fun! Also funny seeing him being very protective of her when someone else had a drive!
People use to call these something's Chariots, back in the day, nice to see it, proving to be a purposeful mode of transport.
Back in the late 80's / early 90's, I can remember being overtaken by one or two of these on the A27 dual carriageway (four lanes each way section, between farlington and bedhamton. the road was totaly level, with no downhill run ). It was a bit of a shock at the time....
P.S. I forgot to say I was doing around 60 mph at the time. It must have been traveling at 65 to 70 mph...
@@marksntl7632 that sounds absolutely TERRIFYING!
Happy to see that the Hole-Staring Work Crew is an international thing, TWC was incredible, as always!
15:30 Slowest race ever, maybe. But who had the biggest smile? The van driver or Ian? 🤣🤣
I expect Ian was smiling. The van driver was probably laughing hysterically.
I like how Jono is utterly terrified of Twc, considering he is a 2CV man, but then, a 2CV is far less likely to fall over with exuberant cornering on a windy day I suppose... :P
Don't you just love it when you stop at traffic lights and the car in front then moves forward for no reason leaving a big gap in front of you. Why do people do that? Good luck at the show.
I think people do that because they think you are to close behind them.
They must not realise the rear view mirror is magnified as well as the wing mirrors and the person behind is not as close as they think.
@@1066gaz That's certainly a possibility. However, I never pull up too close and the line of traffic is stationary for a while before they make their move forward. Another possible theory is that they misjudge their braking and stop too soon then decide to edge forward slowly. I don't know why it happens but I find it annoying. Thanks for your reply.
I think it's just impatatienc, and a bit of anticipation of the lights changing.
TWC the mile muncher. Absolutely incredible. What an amazing car she is.
Whenever I see TWC on an adventure, there's always that slight pang of sadness thinking how basically all of these things were just left to rot when they were done with.
Bags of fun (if you're a bit of a mentalist xD).
Well done TWC buzzing away for 250 miles !!(She could only dream of anything digital)👍😀
When I was 18 years old riding in an old Chevy pick up with one of my sister’s friends who was a former truck driver I learned about flashing the headlights to let the big trucks know when to merge back in. I never forgot it. Great journey. Thanks for bringing us along
I need to buy one of these and show it!
Being a disabled wheelchair user, having also driven one in the mid-seventies!
I’m loving this 😎😎😎!
Nerves of steel, bet Guy Martin wouldn't go at 50+ in Tuk!
Will never get bored when TWC has a journey. She brings a smile to your face.
Always nice to see Aberaeon, very happy memories of our holiday 👍👍👍
Your braver than me driving all that way in a small light vehicle. You deserve some kind of award for that.
I find TWC to be so absolutely, incredibly, ridiculously charming. Great to see you out on a new adventure.
Love TWC’s trips out. I too remember the old Birmingham buses, especially the number 11 route which was close to where I used to live. Travelled that route regularly from Hall Green to Erdington in my first year of my British Leyland apprenticeship!
Crazy 2021, the year when a little Invacar requires the same Super Unleaded petrol, as a 600 bhp supercar !!
I just love this little car, especially the sound. It's such a pity most were scrapped.
Brilliant little car. Made me smile to see it going through familiar Welsh roads. Wish I could get to NEC but I have tickets but also have covid
Derek from Dorking
Plucky little TWC got you there, no worries. You must be a very handy soul Ian, tackling a trip like that in dreadful weather in a car that gives you an occasional shower!
Have a fantastic time with Matt and Steph at the NEC show. The three of you are fantastic, love all your channels. The three of you together will be phenomenal! Wish I was well enough to come along, with luck I can make the show next year. Have a fantastic time
I absolutely loved this episode. The Invacar fascinates me. I live "Out in the bush", a nice 4 hour drive west of Sydney in Australia and I love the videos of your drives all over the UK.
You have some balls hurtling along at 65mph, impressive stuff!
your a very brave man driving all that way in a car like that.
You absolute hero, that's a journey
TWC is a champ as is her driver and this is driving for the adventurous! Thank you very much, great video :)
Your little inva car is endearing itself to me. Glad you had a nice drive. Be careful on the road. Cheers.
Ian, great to see 'the slowest race ever' ! Glad you went for the overtake ! Your TWC road trips are brilliant.
Twc what a character she is followed her progress since day one..quality vids..coming through the welsh rain storm with no side window is my favourite vid of all time..long may these motoring adventures continue 😀
Although I will be honest... Foxanne is my sweetheart 💕 💖
A great drive with TWC. Thanks 😊
Watching someone who, like me, has never driven an Invacar and can just about handle "TWC" at low speed has given me a new found, huge respect, to you for being to drive "TWC" at 65+mph! Terrific video.
Glad to see you made it there.
Nice Video. Was also nice to meet you in person on the Friday. Keep doing what you do Ian.
Ian, that is true commitment to the classic motoring hobby. Well done to you sir.
FANTASTIC video! OMG that little car is just something! I'd be scared to death to take it on the highway but it looks like nobody's business! It's a perfect vehicle for city driving, that's for sure, much simpler than a SMART CAR and really gets the job done just about the same, doesn't it? Amazing and GET THOSE BELTS FIXED! LOL
I absolutely love these TWC journeys. It seems girls really do just want to have fun!
what a lovely video :-)
thank you for cheering n=my day
I love the way Jono got to the end of the carpark before discovering how to steer TWC!
You make it look easy when in reality it is far from it. Jono described the difficulties of the technique required to "forget the feet" which you mastered ages ago and that is why the journey looked easy. It isn't possible to convey wind turbulence on faster roads via YTube.
One of the best episodes ever.
Another great video has always Ian and twc miss hubnut and hublets and dogs
TWC is awesome, cant wait to meet her at the weekend
Giselle will be there too apparently
Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday
My first one of your Invacar videos. I didn't think I'd enjoy it but I was very wrong. Now digging up the rest.
Great video Mr HubNut, enjoyed every minute.
I'm looking forward to seeing TWC on Saturday 👍👍👍
fantastic stuff! thanks for sharing.
Glad you weren't at Loggerheads for too long. You might have ended up being sent to Coventry.
Don’t know what I’m more amazed at, a car that sat in a field for years and never did long journeys doing so well, or your bravery driving Twc ! Either way good luck and enjoy the show.
Went to Newtown years ago. I am looking forward to visiting Great British Car journey as I live in Chesterfield. Seen them advertising at Ashover Car show.
The way your different stickers overlap on the left-side window (see 1:11) makes it look like a carton of chips.
Well done Ian quite an interesting journey. Hope you and your companions have a great time at NEC always want to see it on my own as nobody else wants to spend 3 days watching old cars leak fluid on the carpets or smell of old things as being told weekly.
Love your adventures she really gets a rally on
I never knew what we called "Cripple cars" could go so fast...50mph. WoW!! We recently saw one in the Bubble Car Museum in Lincolnshire and I took a photo to tease my sister. Her first car was a mk1 Fiesta in "Cripple car blue" and so it was always known as one.
I remember reading about those vehicles, many different companies made them on behalf of the government. There were many different models for each disability. I believe most were destroyed once they were recalled. I imagine it's nicer for people now that Motability leases real cars.
Well that was quite the journey!
Excited to be there on Friday
Really nice to see this TWC trip and was LMAO when you said "Sounds alright, belts still looking as alarming as ever". That plucky little Steyr engine is just wonderful.
I agree. Cars are for driving, not for going on a trailer. I am impressed with TWC's performance. Like a sports car in comparison to my Austin 7 Ruby. I'm also impressed by your courage at driving her that fast in those conditions.
I am surprised that the Spanish lorry driver acknowledged your head lamp flash. I have lived in Spain for 22 years. I have given up flashing them back in. They never acknowledge it. And they rarely (if ever) flash each other in.
Cheers. It is unusual for foreign truckers to flash. They just don't seem to do follow that code.
Love your trip in TWC - I am also amazed at the onroad performance you can get out of the car on the road. I have a Haflinger and so has the same basic engine and I cannot get anywhere near the speed you can - keep up the great work and videos.
TWC really has no business doing these trips….but she does them so well! I could listen to her energetic song all day!
TWC is a little champ, Always love the funny whirr of the dynastart and idle sound! I imagine the second trip back in Giselle will be far more relaxed!
As soon as you mentioned the demising not working around town, images of fogged up Invacars from my childhood immediately sprang to mind.
I remember these TWC's from my youth.
That was a nice adventure with TWC. That is still a crazy way to stop the vehicle, but it will keep you awake on the road. I think they would still be ok now for those that only putter about town and don't go far. They are certainly easy to park on the street. Thanks for the ride along.
Super video, thanks very much, Ian. Great to have TWC out on an adventure, with a wonderful view to boot. Wales is fab. Looking forward to the rest of the week, hope you enjoy it.
Welshpool is my stop off point of choice on my journeys between Tenby and Yorkshire. Try out the Vintage Cafe (aka Baytree). A really quirky, interesting place. Great cakes and a superb breakfast if you're there before midday.
Great little Roadtrip with TWC, good to see her getting out on longer trips again.
Think ive mentioned a few times lol 4 of us coming down from glasgow on sunday to the show looking forward to seeing yourself and matt
Ian I too have an Eli. Mine’s a w126 which I run mostly in Victoria Australia. I’ve had the 380SEL for more than ten years and love it. Such a lovely old thing for a long cruise somewhere. My ELI derives from the number plate. It a very high spec car with all the whistles and lights Mercedes-Benz could offer and it’s been fun finding out what all the knobs do, there are many - excluding me ! Cheers in your Invacar.
Sorry to hear about Moo's. Ironically it used to be a Little Chef. There's a nice cafe/tea room, and butcher's, in Berriew just off the A483 before you get to Welshpool from Newtown.
thanks Ian, bit of a mood lifter seeing TWC on an adventure.
Mood lifting extraordinare!
Best of luck with the show, I hope to attend next year
These things don't hang about do they! 1977 as a secondary school project a few of us built a go-kart powered by an invacar Villiers engine... Mental dangerous and certainly wouldn't be allowed now with risk assessment rules... Such fun we had when boys could be boys!
Some great scenery 👍
Hi Ian - I'm at the NEC as part of the BSA Owners Club stand in Hall 5 and it was great to see TWC in the flesh yesterday for the first time for me. I wondered if you'd driven her (is she a her?) there and here's the answer - how could I think otherwise! Best wishes for a great show.
Enjoyed seeing some familiar roads in Wales from my rallying days in the 80s and 90s. Greetings from California Ian and thanks for the video!
I really enjoy these road trip episodes! Bravo TWC, you done good.
Well done Ian a brilliant video of your and TWC adventures all the best for the NEC
Ah great to see TWCs cheeky face heading out for adventures again. And seeing some familiar Welsh roads and towns that I remember from my shepherds hut holiday near Tregaron a few years ago. Shame I can't get to the NEC but look forward to seeing video of my favourite 3 Car UA-camrs sharing a stand! 😊👍
Heading to the show on Sunday.... Was looking forward enough as it is but seeing TWC in position has made me very excited!
Twc does make us smile!
I've probably said this before but you are brave to take that little car as far as you do, and, to travel at 65 mph in it. It is a very unique little car. I suspect it is more suited to short trips but you don't let that stop you.
Aah, a classic HubNut road trip - excellent!👍
That was so entertaining! 😊😊😊👍
As carrying passengers is forbidden, I'm grateful for the POV! Tuk certainly can appear to get a shift on when required. I did wonder about motorways eligibility.
As TWC is more powerful than earlier carriages, she can legally go on motorways.
Ha ha! Well done on a great journey. Didn't realise you were going away to do it twice. Might be easier in the GSA. Wish you all the best for the show. I must get to one, one year. 👍
other than driving on the wrong side of the road this was an awesome adventure in an awesome vehicle
I never knew these "cripple cars" could motor along at 50mph. Whoooosh...super speedy... and then upto 65mph!
I remember there being lots of those cars on the roads, made by several different companies from a plan given by the government.
My sisters first car was a mk1 Fiesta in what we called "Cripple Car Blue". She got a huge amount of teasing due to that car and funnily enough we saw an Invacar aka Cripple car just a month or so ago in the Bubble Car Museum in Lincolnshire and of course, I had to send my sister a photo of it.
I believe many were destroyed after the government discontinued them. I remember seeing a photo somewhere of a yard/compound full of them.
'The adventures of twc' would make a great childrens book.
Excellent Ian good to see you both out and about.
Honestly, Tuk is build for a maximum speed of 45 kph and you ride it at the double speed. It is thought to allow handicapped people to drive in town or on rural roads, like the Aixam is used by the generation 80+ to go from an abandoned French village to the next inhabited place on country roads with a maximum of three cars per day. Tuk has an engine similar in power output to some real cars, like the Trabant, the 2CV or the DAF. 65 mph ist just insane! My father had to live with a so-called cycle car from the 1930's up to the late 1960's: A 500 ccm, 10 HP, four-wheeler (but without such luxury as a differential!), two-seater transformed to a 2.7 seater (my brother had to seat in the trunk transformed into a third seat) was his everyday car during many years. Of course, winter was tough without a heater. Maybe that's why I love the Invacar, not without considering you being a daredevil!
TWC handled that trip really well, and that camera angle is surprisingly nice to watch.
Adore these adventures, Many thanks for sharing.
A small world Mr HubNut - I live in Wirksworth! Not a place you see on UA-cam very often.
