It's frightening how Reynor is now my fav protoss player...
He plays protoss like a zerg it's funny to see
actually lore accurate if you ask me
He’s always been my fav Zerg player cus he reminds me of my own playstyle. He tries finding out what works and just makes these wacky builds.
@craigcombes it feels like this is the best way to play toss. 😮
Harstem cooler
I NEVER get tired of the ONLY person on youtube spitting in the face of the algorithm daily... "And I'll probably do another one anyways".
I mean is asking for likes and comments really spitting in the face of the algorithm? Lol. I mean albeit in a funny way.
I mean not too difficult to spit in the face of the algorythm when u get 40k views on every video u upload
I genuinely want Reynor to win a premier tournament with Protoss
lol at a Protoss winning a tournament.
Won’t Protoss is too under balanced in the late game. They have no chance
@@Nobunaga1983 Did you not watch game 1? and that was with Reynor not using feedback on vibers, no blink DT's, poor tempest control. With more practice he will be the next best Protoss player
Reynor coming out of nowhere years ago and beating Serral was unbelievable at the time. He's one of the best players in the world and the fastest, but I wouldn't be surprised if the stress of being constantly compared to (and having to fight ZvZ which he hates) Serral soured the experience for him. It would kind of be a good career move if he could go from 2nd/3rd/4th best zerg to best protoss in the world, if it were competitive for him to do so. And he seems to have the APM and talent that it might be.
@@streetglidestukov8694 yes I saw. Vipers are just too powerful. They can essentially pick your carriers one by one without taking any damage.
The thing that's really interesting to me, besides just how fast Reynor is at doing everything compared to a normal Protoss, is how he always builds 7-8 Immortals to have with the ground army against Zerg. I feel like I never see other Protoss build more than 1-2 while they are waiting for Colossus to come out, and it looks really effective.
immortals are like the best unit toss has
It's always weird how little other Protoss builds Immortals. Storm clears out the lighter units and softens everything else, Immortals blast the armored units. Add in whatever support DPS or tank in.
I remember getting gm with immortal mass ; against zerg you open two Voidray and then five robo on four bases ; pvp double adept into expand with immortal prism collosus and archon v air ; vs Terran two gate blink three nexus into four robo immortal
Immortals are surprisingly good vs any unit. They are even pretty decent vs. zerglings which are their supposed counter (2-shotting on a rather low attack cooldown). In these games, reynor makes them look ridiculous mostly because of how well he splits his army and uses them.
immortals are insanely good for counterattacks. They're slow but they delete hatcheries in like 5 seconds and are devastating against queens roaches and lurkers
I like how Reynor constantly poked in to clear creap tumors. I think that denied scarlet a lot of information and mobility.
The creep denial was insane in game 1
I appreciate that a player named Reynor plays Zerg and Protoss hehe
Sry don't have the background of the name Raynor, can you fill me in?
Raynor @@GustavBrahe is the last name of the human protagonist of SC2's campaign. "Reynor" is obviously a play on that name. So the irony is in a player naming themselves "Reynor" as a reference to Jim Raynor (who is a human and the main protag of the human faction) and then proceeding to play literally EVERY RACE BUT TERRAN.
35:38 is what I’m talking about. So many Protoss would just sit back and try to catch a storm until the Zerg flanks, nabs everything with vipers or whittles the army down and die - Reynor just fucking guns it remembering “oh yeah, Phoenix’s can pick up”. His killer instinct as Protoss is so stellar considering we almost never see any other Protoss since maybe Zest play the same way. The sheer confidence throws off their opponents 😂
oh the stalker runbys that kill a couple roaches or lings just to get collapsed on and killed by zerglings is so hard to watch. not raynor but most protoss games i watch on here.
@@okachobe1and I love how he has 3 or 4 armies out on the map almost at all times. A lot of the time those zergling counters do serious damage because the Protoss groups their whole army and then they’re forced to recall. I love how Reynor not only keeps his army split until it’s time to collapse but also has a ton of cannons and batteries for defense so he doesn’t have to recall at the first sign of a counter, and even uses his mothership as a cross map travel system.
Overall, this is exactly what Protoss players have been lacking lately imo - they don’t think outside the box anymore with a race that is so good at pulling off crazy shit.
I'm pretty sure he built the phoenixes mainly to pick up lurkers in game 2, the harass was mostly a side effect, potentially deadly if scarlett was surprised by it. The timing was way too late though.
That lurker pickup by the phoenixes really made me shout like a fangirl. It was so beautiful to watch
24 minute cannon rush is a legit strategy I saw Reynor do it
Reynor once heard someone say 'Lurker good unit'. This offended him greatly.
As a non-SC2 player who just started watching, after this game I'm honestly not sure what lurkers are supposed to do. It seems like maybe digging into the ground is supposed to make them less vulnerable(??) but they seemed to get massacred after doing that too. :/ I guess they poke building shields down slightly at considerable distance...
@@JasonFahy burrowed units are invisible unless you have detection (for Protoss that is observers, oracles and cannons). Also, lurkers deal damage on a line, which is good against tight groups of units - that's why Reynor would always split his units to make sure he got a concave instead of a blob when he had to take them on.
Unironicly, Reynor is now my favorite Protoss player now.
Reynor's static defense setup is one of the coolest twist on protoss I've seen. Its such a small change but give him so much flexibility.
Photon cannons are borderline OP, they have more life than turrets, more dps than spines , shoot air and ground using the same space cost just ,150 minerals and can be build by the dozens using a single probe
"IT'S TOO MUCH" sums it up. Incredible.
Reynor holding the surprise lurkers in game one was so impressive. I feel like i havent seen Protoss beat that setup with a ground army in a long time. On top of that he held the lurker push in game 2 when he was short on ground army but used the pheonixs to the max extent. Two unbelievably impressive defenses that I feel most Protoss just die to these days.
THIS is how Protoss is meant to be played. Everyone else just maxing out Skytoss in the endgame turning the match in a slow, boring dance of sky units, while Reynor maintains half sky and half ground armies, using the right unit at the right time, forcing the opponent to overcommit to one side, and then switching to the other one to catch him off guard. And this is where his extreme speed from being a Zerg player reveal itself to be fundamental to make this execution possible. Masterful.
By the way. Did you notice Reynor NEVER produced a single Colossus?
IMO another factor thats often overlooked is that Reynor is actually making Immortal and higher tier units. Too often I see players like Hero going mass Stalker with 1 or 2 immortals and then inevitably getting roled by zerg once they updrade their composition
mass immortal is so much more cost effective than stalkers that its not even funny
Aye Max or Hero would have built at least half a dozen colossus and disrupters in that match and been rolled by the lurker rush.
Raynor isn’t a better Protoss player but he knows Zerg so much better than either Hero or Max and it shows.
Him and new guy Nightmare definitely play protoss the correct way. Ensure run bys aren't possible, don't waste your units, and using templar's.
nightmare isn't new
@@clee89 still
Reynor Protoss: Is it imba or do I suck?
I love that the best Protoss player isn’t a Protoss player
One* of the best, I'm pretty sure Maxpax or Showtime in EU & HerO or Creator in KR are above Reynor off-race ;) !
Best overall sc2 player is still herO...
He will lose to at least 13 other protoss player in best of 7.
😂 lol what?
U right my friend but boys are not ready to accept it
I'm disappointed Scarlett didn't type out a "TossImba"
He contains Zerg pros on their side of the map, making any Protoss look like a slowtoss, and challenging the conventional belief that the Protoss falls off at the highest level of competition. This is a history in making and we’re witnessing it.
These games were fantastic, im glad you stuck around with sc2 and that you keep casting all these gems for us
I really love the fact he actually builds inmortals and uses spellcasters besides fucking disruptors
Reynor over here 2 games of protoss and already the best protoss player in the world
Reynor playing Protoss like Zerg, pre-upgrades for a tech switch, uses warp and teleport, my god. 😂
35:40 that was incredible!!!! I was thinking it was one of the most amazing plays I've ever seen... and then you echoed that thought a moment later
I love that Reynor gets shield upgrades along with armor and damage.
Exactly.
Just like Oliviera is playing TvZ the way it was meant to be played. Silos and turrets to sandbag the swarm, over and over again. It's so obvious when you see it and I always wondered why other top players don't do this.
dammnnnn i would be so happy if reynor won a tournament as Protoss. Finally a Protoss champion again.
I’ve been wondering for so long why recall isn’t abused more late game. Especially with a mothership. Keeping the mothership safe and not just wasting it like every other Protoss. It really does seem like Reynor has figured something out that others haven’t.
Making protoss pros looking bad, gj raynor!
tbh, they're bound to get a wake up call bc most of them perform so badly for what they do
that's because they are! except for maxpax/stats
You got great casting brother
One interesting thing is that Reynor first goes for Shields upgrades rather than Ground/Air armor. This allows him much more flexibility in terms to unit composition and makes the immortals and Archons quite tanky as well
The first game is a masterpiece.
What, actually using feedback effectively? Leave it to Reynor to show all the Top level Toss how it's done.
Those daily games are such a cure for sleep deprivation. Like a bedtime story. Nice content, thanks!
Same here. Ideal to wind down to.
Yep. He's got a great voice, and I love his relaxed attitude and goofy humor. The (Texan?) accent is also really easy on the ears.
This is why you have to play all races. A protoss that understands his weaknesses and plays like a zerg. It's impressive game play.
How to play Protoss and win:
Step 1: Play Zerg.
Step 2: Play Protoss.
Reynor playing protoss again? sign me the #$*@ up! great games from both, these were a slugfest
The phoenix lurker instant pick up is so crazy😂
You had me at Reynortoss 😂❤🎉
I hope Reynor plays more Protoss, need fresh outlook in the Protoss scene. Thanks for the casts!
WinterStarcraft casts SC2 the way it was meant to be casted.
I mean, is that just the answer? Just be faster? Reynor over here, like "No no, Protoss is good, you simply micro and multitask."
It's so refreshing to see a high tier player switch races and point out all of the ingrained flaws in the meta.
- Prioritizes shield upgrades over armor. If you use the Protoss army to poke, prod, and retreat like Reynor does, this gives you more useful life for your ground army as shields regen where as health does not. It also makes shield batteries and cannons more efficient as shield upgrades improve building shields and give you more health per energy on shield batteries. Shield upgrades also benefit air units making the air transition stronger late game. The only matchup where you might still want armor over shields is PvT because of EMP on Ghosts, but in PvZ and PvP I think shields are just objectively better if you play properly with your army.
- Treats stasis wards like creep tumors and makes a conscious effort to place them throughout the game instead of just 1 or 2 in the mid game and then forget they exist after.
- Isn't afraid to rebuild utility units like Oracles and Observers when they die. Too many Protoss build 3 Oracles and then decide that they are never allowed to build another Oracle no matter what happens, or they think building other units out of the Robo is so important that having more than 1 Observer at a time isn't allowed.
- Isn't so lazy that he neglects to include an observer with his flanking and run-by forces. This allows him to more quickly and easily clear creep in multiple locations crippling the Zerg's vision and ability to maneuver.
- Preps his infrastructure and upgrades before transitioning. He had +1 air weapons before building a single Carrier. He also built several Stargates before starting to build Carriers so he could build a half dozen at once and make an effective transition instead of building 2 at a time and letting the Zerg prepare.
I'm sure there are other things I missed, but even these 5 things represent a pretty dramatic departure from the meta in ways that I think are objectively better and not just a play style difference. Really fantastic to see.
Very good commentary. Agree with everything you wrote.
Protoss players have become stagnant and then people balance whine. Reynor showing them how to play their own race. He is currently higher ranked than most other pro EU protoss.
Maru similarly is rank 3 protoss in Korea. No protoss players do so well with their off race which just shows they overall at the very top level aren't as good.
And this isn't to be disrespectful. They are still incredible players but they are shoehorning themselves into certain limited strategies and playstyles.
There is also the issue of protoss players still have the lowest avg APMs even at the tip top pro level and some like Hero who is currently the no1 protoss still makes many basic mistakes on a consistent basis. Imagine how good hero would be f he kept his wall blocked and didn't throw away his warp prisms.
Got to love seeing meaningful APM in action.
never has i ever seen protoss so fucking strong!
as a lutenist and a performer of early music, it warmed my heart hearing winter talk about recorders and hurdy-gurdies
Raynor play Toss the way I wish all Tosses played it, would love for him to go full-time Toss. But I get it... zerg OP so gata make that money.
Feels like he is transering the queens defensive mechanics to offensive oricals to an extent. Stasis in place of tumors.
I remember years ago watching winter do tryhard streams to make grandmaster, glad to see he's still around and hit his goals.
Winter has seen a lot of SC 2. Ive never heard him enjoy these protoss Strats so much. Reynor just positioned him self so well and has researched the hecc out of each tier unit. He didn't do this for fun,but at times he really does look like he would be enjoying the game.
Reynor as Protoss vs Clem´s Terran..... Thats what I NEED. Excelent cast
I think Raynor would get rolled, I’m 💯 Down to watch that match.
But his strength is his intimate knowledge against Zerg and then swapping into Protoss.
I don’t think he can do the same on TvP.
the first time I saw this new style after the patch is by harstem where he had a ground death ball to deal with lurkers. The buff of immortals def made it happen
TBF I don't think the shield changes do that much vs Zerg, There's not that many units that do so much damage as to nearly wipe the base shields in one shot the way EMP does. Immortals were always a pretty good unit in a straight up fight, but players seem to prefer Colossi Disrupter vs Immortal Storm.
All of a sudden I have a favorite Protoss player!
Raynor does all the things I like about Protoss, Storms, carriers, cannons and OFC probes and pylons.
Who knew, Reynor = God tier Protoss
This level of flexibility is highly refreshing to see in protoss. I agree this really does feel right, like it was always meant to be used this way.
Reynor is now my favorite protoss as well. These games are so fun to watch.
Wow. Just wow. I did not think that Reynor would be such a great Protoss. Amazing. And amazing to watch, too!
Reynor...is kinda make us Protoss players look bad. The guy is blasting the opposition
27:33 I will always say, if you think your micro is bad, you can build on it, if you think your macro is good, you can set that for warm-ups, but if you think your decision making is great, every other skill is bad and you should work on it. A lot of pro players or high ranked players across any game will say that a good majority of the things they do are bad / mid because they can always improve in said skills, and for those who say, "my aim is amazing" or "my positioning is cracked" means that they are over training said skill, and are said ranked or skilled based off how bad they are in everything else, if that makes sense
Sorry for the essay
41:20 That's an oracle with 20 kills.
lifting every unit at the same time is pretty bad ass looking 35:38
Watching your YT every day Winter, we've really been spoiled for Protoss players killin it.
The reason people stopped playing phoenixes was because stats went into the service.
*Looks at Scarlett: "I like this Zerg player,"
*Turns to Reynor: "But THIS is brilliant."
You know it's a good game when Protoss is zerg rushing an actual Zerg with 20 gateways
Blown away by Reynor's FEEDBACK micro - so fucking incredible, all those vipers getting feedbacked every single fight... *spoilers* Scarlett would have absolutely won game two without those feedbacks - she couldn't pick apart the army or damage the air when her vipers were constantly sniped by Reynor's S tier templar micro. Plus all the extra consuming she had to do made her bases die so easily to counterattacks
Reynor looking badass on Protoss. Need to rebuild may gaming box this weekend.
25:03 made me lmao
Great analogies Winter!
Reynor being named after a Terran hero, being a Zerg champion, and absolutely destroying as Protoss makes him the ultimate SC2 player
24:40 jaajajja it hurts because it's true 🥺
42:06 = laughed at the Bane reference
Protoss players : Our units are so slow, if only we could have Zerg's mobility with their Nydus Worms.
Reynor : Hold my limoncello.
I have never been a bigger fan of Raynor! He is now one of my favorite players to watch!!
The Awakening of Tossnor!
Those immortals really lived up to their names
Reynor knows everything a Zerg player will do before the player does it, having played Zerg himself. Just a conjecture, but I think Reynor would have been just as successful if he went Terran and learn that tech. Maybe Dark will drop Zerg and roll Terran. *cross fingers*
If you think about it, stasis = creep spread, and cannon/shield is like a spore crawler push.
How is it these matches just keep getting better and better?!! 😮
Damn that was some fine protoss play!
I love how dependable Jimmy is.
Love Reynors mix of Zerg strategy’s for Protoss. He’s bringing a new kind of Protoss game
I think my favorite thing abotu the first game is how every Protoss player seems to panic at lurkers, Reynor's just like Here's the Immortal, it punches you in the face really hard, I win
The protoss creep is expanding across the map! Coral Toss!
More of these please Winter!!
Too good! That's the way Protoss was meant to be played.
Game 1 spoiler: Holy shit Reynor is changing the way I look at Protoss. I haven’t seen a Protoss player handle that first lurker attack so flawlessly. The number of times I’ve seen Protoss just lose to a handful of lurkers had me feeling like they needed some balance patches but Reynor made them look like a bad investment. It’s kind of annoying that he woke up one day and decided to be a top 2 Protoss in the world but I’ll get over it. I do love seeing those Protoss victory screens after all. (I haven’t watched the rest of the series, ignore that last part if he loses out.)
a million years ago there was a mid-tier pro who would play T vs Z and Z vs T, because he just felt like he understood that matchup. if reynor goes down that road i would love it because i love P v Z and reynor is always entertaining as heck.
the stalkers to end game 1, what a show
Haven't played SC2 in a very long time. Very interesting units now. Pulling enemies in and such. Micro that I can't hope to do lol. Really enjoyed your commentary!
mass cannon is the funniest most meme defensive style ever lol.
I actually watched this on another channel a few days ago because I really like watching Reynor play Protoss but I'll happily watch it again.
Now we need him to show us how to terran.
Marine/medivac into ghost/lib. It's not difficult to figure out. But I doubt Reynor would demean himself by playing terran.
Actually pretty "bad" but I guess it's because he hasn't put much effort into practicing Terran, Clem with Protos beat him
I think scarlet plays more passively now than before, and Zerg should be played more aggressively, hit and run, fast expand and spread, more control over the map. The Protoss units are slow so a hit and run non stop with zerglings should have kept Reinor busy. I noticed she was afraid of diving with the corruptors as well when they have high mobility, I think she had enough to deal with the carriers.
Happy for Rainor getting better with Protoss, and making a more diverse Protoss gameplay, mixing more combat units and splitting them just like Zergs.
Reynor using Photon Cannons like Creep Tumors 😂
It IS APM intensive, but also super expensive.
This was awesome.🎉
Did they improve the sound quality in the game? The sounds seem much better with more channels.
I'm in shock and awe of that first game. Any amount of lurkers scares the absolute tits off me, but reynor handled it like an absolute monster. Beyond impressed.
wanna see Reynor vs Clem/Maru ❤
