@@Nobunaga1983 Did you not watch game 1? and that was with Reynor not using feedback on vibers, no blink DT's, poor tempest control. With more practice he will be the next best Protoss player
Reynor coming out of nowhere years ago and beating Serral was unbelievable at the time. He's one of the best players in the world and the fastest, but I wouldn't be surprised if the stress of being constantly compared to (and having to fight ZvZ which he hates) Serral soured the experience for him. It would kind of be a good career move if he could go from 2nd/3rd/4th best zerg to best protoss in the world, if it were competitive for him to do so. And he seems to have the APM and talent that it might be.
The thing that's really interesting to me, besides just how fast Reynor is at doing everything compared to a normal Protoss, is how he always builds 7-8 Immortals to have with the ground army against Zerg. I feel like I never see other Protoss build more than 1-2 while they are waiting for Colossus to come out, and it looks really effective.
It's always weird how little other Protoss builds Immortals. Storm clears out the lighter units and softens everything else, Immortals blast the armored units. Add in whatever support DPS or tank in.
I remember getting gm with immortal mass ; against zerg you open two Voidray and then five robo on four bases ; pvp double adept into expand with immortal prism collosus and archon v air ; vs Terran two gate blink three nexus into four robo immortal
Immortals are surprisingly good vs any unit. They are even pretty decent vs. zerglings which are their supposed counter (2-shotting on a rather low attack cooldown). In these games, reynor makes them look ridiculous mostly because of how well he splits his army and uses them.
immortals are insanely good for counterattacks. They're slow but they delete hatcheries in like 5 seconds and are devastating against queens roaches and lurkers
35:38 is what I’m talking about. So many Protoss would just sit back and try to catch a storm until the Zerg flanks, nabs everything with vipers or whittles the army down and die - Reynor just fucking guns it remembering “oh yeah, Phoenix’s can pick up”. His killer instinct as Protoss is so stellar considering we almost never see any other Protoss since maybe Zest play the same way. The sheer confidence throws off their opponents 😂
oh the stalker runbys that kill a couple roaches or lings just to get collapsed on and killed by zerglings is so hard to watch. not raynor but most protoss games i watch on here.
@@okachobe1and I love how he has 3 or 4 armies out on the map almost at all times. A lot of the time those zergling counters do serious damage because the Protoss groups their whole army and then they’re forced to recall. I love how Reynor not only keeps his army split until it’s time to collapse but also has a ton of cannons and batteries for defense so he doesn’t have to recall at the first sign of a counter, and even uses his mothership as a cross map travel system. Overall, this is exactly what Protoss players have been lacking lately imo - they don’t think outside the box anymore with a race that is so good at pulling off crazy shit.
I'm pretty sure he built the phoenixes mainly to pick up lurkers in game 2, the harass was mostly a side effect, potentially deadly if scarlett was surprised by it. The timing was way too late though.
Reynor holding the surprise lurkers in game one was so impressive. I feel like i havent seen Protoss beat that setup with a ground army in a long time. On top of that he held the lurker push in game 2 when he was short on ground army but used the pheonixs to the max extent. Two unbelievably impressive defenses that I feel most Protoss just die to these days.
IMO another factor thats often overlooked is that Reynor is actually making Immortal and higher tier units. Too often I see players like Hero going mass Stalker with 1 or 2 immortals and then inevitably getting roled by zerg once they updrade their composition
Aye Max or Hero would have built at least half a dozen colossus and disrupters in that match and been rolled by the lurker rush. Raynor isn’t a better Protoss player but he knows Zerg so much better than either Hero or Max and it shows.
Photon cannons are borderline OP, they have more life than turrets, more dps than spines , shoot air and ground using the same space cost just ,150 minerals and can be build by the dozens using a single probe
Exactly. Just like Oliviera is playing TvZ the way it was meant to be played. Silos and turrets to sandbag the swarm, over and over again. It's so obvious when you see it and I always wondered why other top players don't do this.
THIS is how Protoss is meant to be played. Everyone else just maxing out Skytoss in the endgame turning the match in a slow, boring dance of sky units, while Reynor maintains half sky and half ground armies, using the right unit at the right time, forcing the opponent to overcommit to one side, and then switching to the other one to catch him off guard. And this is where his extreme speed from being a Zerg player reveal itself to be fundamental to make this execution possible. Masterful. By the way. Did you notice Reynor NEVER produced a single Colossus?
As a non-SC2 player who just started watching, after this game I'm honestly not sure what lurkers are supposed to do. It seems like maybe digging into the ground is supposed to make them less vulnerable(??) but they seemed to get massacred after doing that too. :/ I guess they poke building shields down slightly at considerable distance...
@@JasonFahy burrowed units are invisible unless you have detection (for Protoss that is observers, oracles and cannons). Also, lurkers deal damage on a line, which is good against tight groups of units - that's why Reynor would always split his units to make sure he got a concave instead of a blob when he had to take them on.
Raynor @@GustavBrahe is the last name of the human protagonist of SC2's campaign. "Reynor" is obviously a play on that name. So the irony is in a player naming themselves "Reynor" as a reference to Jim Raynor (who is a human and the main protag of the human faction) and then proceeding to play literally EVERY RACE BUT TERRAN.
I’ve been wondering for so long why recall isn’t abused more late game. Especially with a mothership. Keeping the mothership safe and not just wasting it like every other Protoss. It really does seem like Reynor has figured something out that others haven’t.
He contains Zerg pros on their side of the map, making any Protoss look like a slowtoss, and challenging the conventional belief that the Protoss falls off at the highest level of competition. This is a history in making and we’re witnessing it.
One interesting thing is that Reynor first goes for Shields upgrades rather than Ground/Air armor. This allows him much more flexibility in terms to unit composition and makes the immortals and Archons quite tanky as well
Winter has seen a lot of SC 2. Ive never heard him enjoy these protoss Strats so much. Reynor just positioned him self so well and has researched the hecc out of each tier unit. He didn't do this for fun,but at times he really does look like he would be enjoying the game.

Game 1 spoiler: Holy shit Reynor is changing the way I look at Protoss. I haven’t seen a Protoss player handle that first lurker attack so flawlessly. The number of times I’ve seen Protoss just lose to a handful of lurkers had me feeling like they needed some balance patches but Reynor made them look like a bad investment. It’s kind of annoying that he woke up one day and decided to be a top 2 Protoss in the world but I’ll get over it. I do love seeing those Protoss victory screens after all. (I haven’t watched the rest of the series, ignore that last part if he loses out.)
the first time I saw this new style after the patch is by harstem where he had a ground death ball to deal with lurkers. The buff of immortals def made it happen
TBF I don't think the shield changes do that much vs Zerg, There's not that many units that do so much damage as to nearly wipe the base shields in one shot the way EMP does. Immortals were always a pretty good unit in a straight up fight, but players seem to prefer Colossi Disrupter vs Immortal Storm.
Blown away by Reynor's FEEDBACK micro - so fucking incredible, all those vipers getting feedbacked every single fight... *spoilers* Scarlett would have absolutely won game two without those feedbacks - she couldn't pick apart the army or damage the air when her vipers were constantly sniped by Reynor's S tier templar micro. Plus all the extra consuming she had to do made her bases die so easily to counterattacks
27:33 I will always say, if you think your micro is bad, you can build on it, if you think your macro is good, you can set that for warm-ups, but if you think your decision making is great, every other skill is bad and you should work on it. A lot of pro players or high ranked players across any game will say that a good majority of the things they do are bad / mid because they can always improve in said skills, and for those who say, "my aim is amazing" or "my positioning is cracked" means that they are over training said skill, and are said ranked or skilled based off how bad they are in everything else, if that makes sense Sorry for the essay
Reynor plays protoss like a zerg player: - Spamming units - Harassing from different flanks. - Poking tumors (instead of building them). He knows what bothers a zerg player as a toss. I think Scarlett had a window where she had 30 lurkers and coulda pushed right before the carriers came on the field, but she was unaware of the switch and that was game. The rest of the game worked out how it had too, she lost as soon as her lurkers all died from the initial tech switch

Haven't played SC2 in a very long time. Very interesting units now. Pulling enemies in and such. Micro that I can't hope to do lol. Really enjoyed your commentary!
I think scarlet plays more passively now than before, and Zerg should be played more aggressively, hit and run, fast expand and spread, more control over the map. The Protoss units are slow so a hit and run non stop with zerglings should have kept Reinor busy. I noticed she was afraid of diving with the corruptors as well when they have high mobility, I think she had enough to deal with the carriers. Happy for Rainor getting better with Protoss, and making a more diverse Protoss gameplay, mixing more combat units and splitting them just like Zergs.
It was almost amusing to see how much reynor struggles with vipers. Even if he manages to feedback them the 2-3x in those games, they always stay alive. The vipers killed so many units in game 2, probably more than in any other PvZ i've seen, even on the ladder. He should learn from neeb or trigger (?), those had amazing templar control vs. vipers, also with oracles. I'd love to see reynor pilot the protoss lategame army properly vs. zerg, because technically, lategame protoss is unbeatable for zerg if played correctly. Not as much anymore as it was with perma-cloak on the mothership, but still this applies.
looks like he played protoss like a zerg, mass unit after unit so it just broke the zergs back by these tech switches as scarlett was just trying to react to what was coming. it's very unlike how typical protoss plays which is more trying to handcraft a solid composition to counter what the enemy does. but what i think should be noted in these games is the lack of colossi and disruptors to deal with the overwhelming amount of zerg units, they were simply never needed, high templars and archons was enough.
I'm in shock and awe of that first game. Any amount of lurkers scares the absolute tits off me, but reynor handled it like an absolute monster. Beyond impressed.
It's frightening how Reynor is now my fav protoss player...
He plays protoss like a zerg it's funny to see

It was almost amusing to see how much reynor struggles with vipers. Even if he manages to feedback them the 2-3x in those games, they always stay alive. The vipers killed so many units in game 2, probably more than in any other PvZ i've seen, even on the ladder.
He should learn from neeb or trigger (?), those had amazing templar control vs. vipers, also with oracles. I'd love to see reynor pilot the protoss lategame army properly vs. zerg, because technically, lategame protoss is unbeatable for zerg if played correctly. Not as much anymore as it was with perma-cloak on the mothership, but still this applies.
looks like he played protoss like a zerg, mass unit after unit so it just broke the zergs back by these tech switches as scarlett was just trying to react to what was coming.
it's very unlike how typical protoss plays which is more trying to handcraft a solid composition to counter what the enemy does.
but what i think should be noted in these games is the lack of colossi and disruptors to deal with the overwhelming amount of zerg units, they were simply never needed, high templars and archons was enough.
the stalkers to end game 1, what a show
You know it's a good game when Protoss is zerg rushing an actual Zerg with 20 gateways
Those immortals really lived up to their names
I'm in shock and awe of that first game. Any amount of lurkers scares the absolute tits off me, but reynor handled it like an absolute monster. Beyond impressed.
