thank you so much, making a new york styled city that is going to have an estimated population of 500k is a big project and i want it to be realistic. i been watching you and ive been waiting for something like this
FPS really seems to tank if you have major traffic issues, especially when I hit the 80-100K population point. Learning how to utilize public transit, and planning for good road hierarchy has helped a lot.
I started having trouble with mine at about 70k. I didn't even think about the traffic. I don't have any problem areas but I don't have a lot of public transport either. So maybe too many pedestrians and private vehicles are causing my problems. I'll work on some bus lines and see if that helps. I do have several metro lines running. But that obviously leaves people getting to and from the stations.
Buses seem to only add to my problem with traffic. Planning for dedicated pedestrian and bike paths that connect major areas, along with a metro or monorail network seems to work pretty well without disrupting traffic. For remote areas or a city that's spread out, a train line works pretty well also. I suspect the vehicle count is what's causing the slow down for me, I typically end up with a ton of industrial traffic. I've been experimenting with boosting education to try and utilize more offices instead of industrial areas, not sure yet if it's going to work. I may still end up with a ton of delivery vehicles clogging up the roads.
The game simulating a car or a person is same-same. The more going on, the harder it's going to be to process. As far as industrial/commercial traffic, it really helps to not have large blocks of either. Spread them out. It also helps cut down on the traffic if you limit the small (1x1) buildings from forming. Say you have a narrow strip of boxes to zone (1x?). Don't do it. You'll end up with a boatload of tiny buildings and each will generate just as much traffic as a 4x4. If (as you should) you separate your industry into small sections throughout your map, it'll also help to connect them with cargo train terminals. It'll cut back on trucks traveling all over the map and they'll instead just go to the nearest terminal and the goods will be shipped across the map.
@@bolland83 try adding more cargo terminals if you haven't already. Industrial areas will send trains to each other and commercial areas since it is more efficient than trucks. It's fun to see trains pulling into a depot and see that they are from another depot nearby.
So I can cut the number of subscriptions by editing the buildings I want so that they all have the same few trees instead of every building requiring its own special list of trees? Great tip. And having just a few trees makes a more cohesive look too.
More of a beginner tip : Find a map you really like and let the landscape inspire you. Then use the unlock all tiles mod and remove all existing roads, railroads etc from your building area. I always make temporary roads connecting my city to the outside world untill i figure out what my highway systeem is going to be like. This will give you the freedom to start planning. Also, i dont plan everything at once. It will be too much like work and it will burn me out. So i usually start with something i look forward to developping, like a nice seafont wirh a big boulevard with a beach , an industral area with a nice big port or some relaxing suburb with a forest and some lakes. Usually when this is done my city sort of develops from these areas into a real city in a natural way. This will keep things interesting for me. So plan ahead, but not too much, because in the end its about having fun.
Hi! Big fan. you posted a screenshot on reddit "Custom sidewalks are so satisfying!" and in it, there is a curb cutout with a vent asset above it. How were you able to make the curb cutout? For the life of me, I cannot find it anywhere. The closest I found was a suburb road pack, but to force the cutout I would have to make a T-intersection because it only does it as a crosswalk, whereas your screenshot seems to be for an actual driveway. Anyway, I hope you're able to help me with this, but if not, no big deal. Thanks in advance, regardless!

Hey Mr. Pres. I followed this video and on the second tip, which said to create detailed houses in the asset editor, some of the trees that I subscribed to in my second account on steam workshop didn't show up in the asset editor. It showed up in the Load Asset panel. It didn't show up in the decorations menu. Can you help me please?
Some solid tips. I have problems with lagging and load time already and I don't have very many subscriptions at all. But my computer is closely related to a potato (Intel Q9650 and AMD RX460). I mainly have trouble when I start using Move It! now that my city is over 80,000. I'm assuming 8 GB of 1,333 MHz of DDR3 is struggling to keep up. Santa didn't bring my new computer this year so I'm hoping the IRS gives me back enough of my money I can upgrade. I must have missed something. I didn't see the justification for using a second Steam account. I can just as easily edit assets under my main account. I didn't see how editing them under another account and sharing them helps anything.
Good luck with the PC upgrade- you will need more than 8gb of RAM for high asset counts. And the second steam account is so that the asset editor actually loads (loading it with all your assets on your main account will cause major lag)
@@PresCities I'm planning a threadripper build with 32 gigs of RAM. Mainly because I am tired of background processes hurting performance. I now have a thread fetish. I guess I don't have enough assets to see any lag in the editor even with my potato computer.
Hello, sir pres. I just wanted to say that the tip where it said use the asset editor, the second account is not showing up in family. Can you please help? I've watched that part over and over and kept trying but I doesn't work.
What do you gain from having a second account for your custom assets? And what are the advantages/disadvantages of editing the asset when prop anarchy allowed you to place props anywhere?
Doing it on your main account will make it basically impossible to enter the editor due to lag. You edit assets to save time so you don't have to continue editing each building in your city
So one issue I have is organizing assets between projects. If you're working on different cities with different themes (say, east coast vs west coast?) do you just make multiple collections for each one? And can the collections be enabled or disabled en masse each time? I've gone through the "remove all workshop items" script a few times, but don't want to do that every time I switch to something else.
I wish someone would make a city simulator where you don't need a bazillion high schools. Also a realistic sized college campus. Also where the AI handles traffic in a more realistic manner without requiring a ton of user mods.

I guess I don't have enough assets to see any lag in the editor even with my potato computer.
Love how the video is titled something that the video itself does not go into, but instead, refers you to someone else's video to do it...
You edit assets to save time so you don't have to continue editing each building in your city
my PC: Oh God
my RAM: i wanna die
SentinelDaniel I’m like I NEED MORE RAM!!!
Make different accounts and subscribe to different items per account.
Oh so it's just a different account per project. Makes sense. And an extra account just for the editor?
Yeah @@Belhade
I can see my house from the google earth view at 6:55! :P
Parker McKnight - which city is that? I figured out that it's Honolulu.
I think Portland, right? Could be wrong.
The skyscraper with the rounded top looks like the tallest building in Louisville, Kentucky
when showing of the cities on google earth around 6:50, whats the 3rd City you showed with the large Bay??
Hey I would love to download your residential props ... how would I find it
Wich road mods you use for your map? I tried to use network extensions 2, but has a lot of bugs for me
I use NExt2 but I stopped using it in Columbia City
I wish someone would make a city simulator where you don't need a bazillion high schools. Also a realistic sized college campus. Also where the AI handles traffic in a more realistic manner without requiring a ton of user mods.
You sound like morty😂 but in a brilliant way👍
Good suggestions😊
Loving the DJ Quads my dude
Very amazing city
What's the song at the beginning?
question, is using unlimited money mods ok? or would that hamper the development of the city?
