  • Michelin Pilot Sport 4S Review in below freezing temperature on my Shelby GT350. This tire is simply incredible in every regard I never experienced such a good tire that can do everything beyond the limits with no compromises. Just shot this video live in NY and it is cold as hell! I do not recommend anyone to drive on summer tires below 45 degree temps. This video was conducted just as a test and these tires are not a replacement for winter or all season variants.
    Hope you guys enjoy the video and please subscribe. Any questions shoot me an email direct: autofanatic@yahoo.com

    I went from the pilot sports to the mps4s and the difference was night and day on my M5 competition pack. Went from spinning the real wheels at 120mph+ to gripping in second. Never seen road tyres tame a 600bhp rwd so convincingly. Best upgrade I ever made, apart from going to 750bhp in the summer 😁

      For 600 bhp and more power Michelin Sport Cup 2 is better. But only important that you need to know is that Michelin Sport Cup 2 tires don't use when the temperature is low ( cold ).

    The Pilot Sport 4S is amazing because the inner half of the tire is made from a harder compound for rain and cold temps. And the outer half of the tire is extreme summer compound.

    The issue with these tires and cold weather is not grip its the compound used to make them. Freezing temps can damage the tires due to the compound changes under cold temperatures so just keep that in mind that the tire might not last a long if you use all season.

    I’ve driven below freezing temps driving from Idaho to California Bay Area in my brz. The PS4s did a lot better than I would have ever expected them to do given the fact that they are summer tires. Although I did notice a higher amount of wear on them I think it was because I also made sure to keep them as warm as I could by slightly weaving large and right on long straights.

    Once your summer tires are exposed to 20 degrees they have to be brought up gradually to 40 degrees gradually. If not your tires can be damaged or even crack. Ask me how I know😢

  • @dougmillner6800
    @dougmillner6800 3 роки тому +2

    Do you have issues with the following statement that is on their website?
    Note: Tires exposed to temperatures of 20 degrees F (-7 degrees C) or lower must be permitted to gradually return to temperatures of at least 40 degrees F (5 degrees C) for at least 24 hours before they are flexed in any manner, such as by adjusting inflation pressures, mounting them on wheels or using them to support, roll or drive a vehicle.
    Flexing of the specialized rubber compounds used in Max Performance Summer tires during cold-weather use can result in irreversible compound cracking. Compound cracking is not a warrantable condition because it occurs as the result of improper use or storage, tires exhibiting compound cracking must be replaced.
    Any cracking noticed?

  • @NicMagz
    @NicMagz 2 роки тому +1

    I appreciate your willingness to test these tires in said conditions. I'd be curious to see the results of a closed test from like Tire Rack or something to see how they perform quantitatively.

    • @autofanaticcars
      @autofanaticcars  2 роки тому

      Tire Rack does good testing but they are not driving them daily to compile enough data usually it's a one shot deal and the feedback the staff gets that day is what goes into the results. Also the Tire Rack for liability reasons will never test ZR rated tires in cold winter conditions due to them being a reseller and liable for misleading a consumer I did this test for fun and to prove this tire does work in the winter temps.

    Have you done any rain videos with temps falling below 50 to 40 degrees F ? I found that a bit slippery around corners even on normal mode with traction control on. In warm weather the tires work exceptionally well in rain. Below 45 degrees things seem to become noticeably different. And you are right, you become a better driver. Im 58 and a driver had to work to keep any car on the road and each and every car was different, until now with these tires and technology. Track mode, Sport Plus mode are the real deal but the cops hear ya coming from a mile away around here....

    Not sure if you are aware but temps below 20°F apparently can damage these tires if they are mounted and supporting the weight of a vehicle.
    See below:
    Internal construction of the Pilot Sport 4S features twin steel belts reinforced by a spirally wound hybrid reinforcement. This hybrid Aramid and nylon belt offers a lightweight, high-strength reinforcement above the steel belts to enhance high-speed handling, wear and durability. Specifically tuning the application of the cord filament provides Michelin engineers the ability to balance tension and strength, and a single-ply, polyester cord casing balances trade-offs between ride quality and responsive handling.

  • @RJC-ps6wc

    The Pilot Sport 4S is BY FAR the best tire I have ever put on my cars! While I am not in the habit of driving on summer tires when temps are in the 20s, it is good to know you can do it in a pinch with the 4S and there is no need to panic. Perhaps I was a little hasty when switching over to my Blizzaks (around Thanksgiving).
    Did you alter your tire pressures when driving the PS4S in the cold weather?
    As good as the PSS was, the PS4S is even better! It will be interesting see if the tread life is any longer than the PSS. Having said that, tread life is NOT the primary reason for using these tires, performance and safety is!

    • @autofanaticcars
      @autofanaticcars  6 років тому +2

      RJC2001 yeah i didnt want to switch but had no choice with snow, the 4S. is so much better than the Super sport and the super sport was better than the Ps2 so it's a good progressive but damn its a little long before these new versions come to market.

    Anyone have any mileage on their 4S tires? I do have about 5000 miles on mine, and have lots of tread and the tires are very odd......... They can grip like crazy and I have a hard time making them spin with my 668 ft lbs of torque and 577+ hp, on NEW pavement, but on old pavement that appears to have more wear on it the tires can act like they are on ice, they can slide around with 1/5 throttle and I find it dangerous.. I think the rubber compound is a wrong formula for all pavement types, they are good on black asphalt that is new, or on a racetrack... But for every day driving you can go from great traction to 20% traction on 2 different roads.

    • @stefdriver
      @stefdriver 3 роки тому

      Big difference in noise and grip depending on pavement. I drive Audi S5 (awd) and they can skid if I punch it while turning but most people never drive like that. At least they don’t squeal like the cheap Contis.

    FYI, the fastest way to warm up a modern car is to drive it moderately until it fully warms up. Excessive idling a cold engine wastes gas, causes more wear on the motor, dilutes the oil with gasoline. Idling the motor at startup warms the coolant & oil, but the trans, rear axle, brakes, suspension, etc are still cold which drives the computers crazy. I've seen dozens of cars suffer early engine failure due to repeated, extended cold idling. I just replaced the MPSS summer tires on my 16 Stingray w/ MPS A/S3+ all season tires. These tires can be tracked but will cost you some time compared to the MPSS's. Almost went with the 4S's, but wanted to be able to drives in slushy, light snowy weather. I don't think the 4S's will compare favorably in traction challenged situations like snow, slush, etc. All that said, the 4S's are light years better in the cold than the MPSS or the Cup 2's.

    We get really bad winters here in Ontario between 12-24+ inches on some heavy snow falls so as for using the Michelin Pilot A/S 3's for the winter I use that for my summer tires! I purchased the Michelin X-Ice Xi3's which are rated the best winter tires for many years but trust me it's not a great match for the S550's as in everything except for snow it's awesome and really scary in heavy and even freshly laid snow so save yourself the money! I then went with Bridgestone Blizzak's and even though I don't like the road noise and MAJOR gas consumption this thing is not good at it will give you the safety and confidence to drive in the snow with our S550 that Michelin cannot give me with their XIce Xi3's. I've gone through 8-12+ inches of snow with this car and have never gotten stuck and I work in a back road that the city takes least priority in cleaning. Be warned that the Blizzak's with drink your gas like there's no tomorrow but having the ability to drive this car with confidence in the snow I don't give two shits if I'm almost paying double in gas consumption for safety! The bEST all season I used was the new Michelin Premiere AS. I didn't even use winters on my Honda Accord and went all year long using the Michelin Premiere AS and it's awesome, you should compare the 4S to the Premiere's and I can guarantee you it's the better tire between the 2!

Thing is I live in Toronto and most days the weather is below 40. I keep getting told by people that these tires will crack in the winter. I’ve had Pirellis on all my cars and never had one crack ever on me regardless of weather. Just curious if anyone knows if these Michelin’s are more sensitive or if people were just talking theoretical to me. Obviously smarter to have winters and I agree, but I drive this car on dry sunny days only in the winter.
