Paul Chambers (April 22, 1935 - January 4, 1969) was one of the original innovators of jazz bass, so it's good practice for us to study and learn his solos to improve our technique and to learn some classic lines. This lesson guides you through the solo that Paul Chambers plays on the track 'Blue Spring Shuffle' from the 1960 record 'Quiet Kenny' by Kenny Dorham. This video is a preview lesson from John Goldsby’s 5-hour course on soloing (Tell Your Story) where he teaches many different classic transcriptions from the great jazz bassists and guides you through them. John's also joined by his trio in the course to provide band backing tracks for you to practice along with at home. Make sure you download the solo transcription and play the band backing tracks through the links below to follow along with this lesson!

I've played bass guitar for 50+ years; there's nothing like the sound of a bull fiddle ;)

Really appreciate this and have great respect for you mr Goldsby. That being said this sounds like youre reading it, dont find the copying of the phrasing really on point. Especially some of the triplet figures sounds too pronounced from what I can hear compared to the original recording.

Thanks @Oscaraha for your comment. Well taken... I think since you're hearing the solo line without other instruments (Art Taylor & Tommy Flanagan), the line and phasing that I play here with no accompaniment might sound and feel differently to you compared to the original recording. Although I'm attempting to pay homage to the great Paul Chambers and one of the many incredible solos he played, I'm not trying to mimic his sound. I'm playing steel strings here-he played gut-which makes the difference in articulation more pronounced. I'm often using two-finger right-hand technique, and he often used one finger to play 8th-note lines. Basically, I want to sound like myself, playing a solo from the historical canon of the jazz bass tradition as an etude. Thanks for checking it out!

I love the camera shots!! John Goldsby Paul Chambers looking down from heaven and he is smiling upon you. Mr . P. C. was gone too 😭 soon!! He was only 33 years old.
I wonder who has Mr. PC. Bass today?
