in 1979 I was cave diving with my brand new Dacor Pacer 900 and another diver was using his new Scuba Pro reg... He HATED it because after every dive he had to fine tune it to get it working correctly ! He was mad as all hell and wished he had bought Dacor Pacer 900 !
I bought 2 pristine condition Scubapro Balanced Adjustable 2nd stages on eBay. Other than the fact that they are a bit heavy, I love the design and simplicity of them. I get compliments on them whenever I'm on a dive boat. After 40 years, just as good as anything I would buy today.
Mr Alec you are the Very Best but I have a somehow funny question for you . I am impressed how easy you see all details at your age without glasses and I am starting to struggle at forty three years old . How is that possible LOL . I love your videos , Thanks
I had glasses but thanks to my new cataract corrective lenses (with night vision, super zoom and laser targeting...), I can finally see up close again. Glad you like my rants and thanks for watching. A
Thank you for this. personally, although I have more modern regulators, I still prefer to use my ScubaPro Mark X dual balanced, adjustable regulator, purchased in 1986, although I keep maintaining it periodically. Besides, it has also a beautiful vintage look that most of my young divers friend love and admire.
Lovely vintage scuba regulators. Previous double hose the don't have any adjustments apart from built in reserve valve in some of the. Very interesting. I like that balanced metal 2nd stage from Scubapro
As always, awesome and extremely informative videos! This is what I would enjoy watching on an early Saturday morning! Can you do a video on why we’re doing safety stops at around 15ft/5m? Been wondering about this for a while now. Thank you in advance. -Steven
recently, I rebuilt a Scubapro R109 second stage and I modified the poppet spool to include the balance option, It is a very good quality material and I succeeded to have it perform very well. my only drawback in comparizon to new plastic construction is that it is a bit heavy. very good topo very good video
Hi! I have a question about ss adjustable knob! I had a great, sci dive tech who I trust, tell me that after every dive I should crank the knob all the way open, and I failed to remember his reasoning for it, or if I’m also supposed to turn the knob back to the middle before my next dive? Why did he say that/should I crank it open after every dive? (Maybe something about it keeps your second stage in better condition) and am I supposed to crank it back after? Thanks for your help! -a 21 year old new AAUS diver
When the adjustment is turned open, the spring pressure on the soft seat is at the lowest level. That way the seat will not be subject to pressure between dives & will last longer. Really, in practical terms, it's not a big deal.
Hi Alec, thanks for the insight! I agree, Scubapro regs were bullet proof from that era. I was still diving with my 73’ MKV that I got brand new up until two years ago.
I saw picture of old Scubapro reg and couldn't resist I click on the video to find out more. I didn't know was possible venturi assist back in old days
The equipment course is a great help to divers who want to know more about how gear works. Its like only driving a car vs knowing how to do all your own maintenance too. A
I wish I had your instructor. I took the equipment specialist course for that exact reason. My instructor used it as an opportunity to try to sell merchandise and very little more. I was very disappointed and really learned little to nothing from that course. I have learned so much more from Alec’s UA-cam channel. And constantly pick up more here.
hi Alec that second scuba pro and the third scuba pro regs look to have the identical internal valve activation lever, I hope they used a better plastic internal spool for the later version, My early one was very discolored and brittle. On another note, I heard somewhere that the older all metal regulators were less susceptible to freezing up because the metal draws heat from the water more than plastic does. Any thoughts on that? take care Owen m
Unless a regulator is specifically made for cold water diving, 50F and lower, they will freeze up. See my video on why regs actually freeze in video S09E05 Why Does my Regulator Freeze? Hint: it's the adiabatic process. Take care Owen. A
They still have core excellence to be around this long in a rapidly changing world of scuba gear. I can name a dozen well known makers now gone but Scubapro continues. A
There is no micro adjustment in the second stage, just the breathing effort adjustment. Watch video: S08E01 1. Regulator Service, Set Breathing Resistance, and S16E02 What Makes Breathing Easy?. These will show the only adjustments you can make. A
Scary to think that that 'brand new' Apeks XTX50 is now at least a ten-year-old model; bought mine when I first started diving in 2013 and they are still perfect.
Very entertaining. I imagine just vintage diver uses his 1969 Scubapro Adjustable. How innovative that was back in the day. I am just curious what kind of 1st stage would be the best match
Big thanks
You are welcome.

Are they still available? can you upload a link please ?
Real teacher. I watched all of your videos. Big thank you for everything
Much appreciate your comment. Lots more from this stone age diver still to come.

Thanks, you too!

Fantastic video and you seem like a wonderful guy. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 😁
My pleasure!

I got the balance adjustable. Its kinda old. Nice video. Love it
Cool, thanks
Alec, again an amazing video. It's wonderful how you explained, I believe even a child would have understood everything. 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!

Always looking foward to your uploads Alec. Especially the ones about regs. 🤗🤗🤗
Awesome, thank you!

Great video! I'd like to request a similar video on Poseidon regs.
Added to my future ideas list, thanks.

most ppl do not know apeks has been around since 1972~74
It has been around longer than most divers think. A reliable name but not widely known.

Vintage scuba gear is the best. Thanks Kevin for patience. Double hose is my favorite
You're very welcome. Kevin reads (I think) the comments but has not learned to type yet.

As I heard Magnus fireworks admit "for marketing", most honest statements ever.
Interesting. Thanks for watching.

Surprised you didn't mention air balancing in the progression of features.
I remember when the first balanced piston single hose reg came out. No one thought it worth another $10 until we tried it. Never went back.
A
Hi Alec, thanks for the insight!
I agree, Scubapro regs were bullet proof from that era. I was still diving with my 73’ MKV that I got brand new up until two years ago.
You're like me and show up diving in 1970's gear ready to jump in.

So much of what we use today is an improvement or better solution from what vintage double hose divers first tried out. Glad you like it.

I took the PADI equipment specialist course and it really turned out to be an excellent review of all my equipment. It was worth it.

i would not call scubapro the Mercedes. Maibe a Polo :) They did a lot of screw-ups recently.
They still have core excellence to be around this long in a rapidly changing world of scuba gear. I can name a dozen well known makers now gone but Scubapro continues.

I saw more retro scuba videos on your channel Sir. Subscribed
Welcome aboard! Lots to learn and laugh at.

ScubaPro had several 1st stages, all piston, some even balanced. They were a big innovator and sold them everywhere.

1969 Scubapro Adjustable, still an excellent second stage. I have several and still dive them.
Always great to hear from the talent himself.
Thank you very much. Glad you like my old man rants.

Except Toyota is the new Mercedes, want over 300k, get a Toyota. Mercedes is dead now. Only a 90's Mercedes is worth anything...
Cars and regulators are similar: chrome, features, cost, name brand and service are all factors.

I think I saw one of those early 2nd stages used in Sea Hunt. I have to go back and watch again. Thanks Alec !
You bet! Thanks for watching.

👍😎🇵🇭🤿always enjoyed Alex I enjoy serving my own scuba regulators myself!
Glad these help to keep you motivated to continue with self service.
